5-star DL recruit Justus Terry makes surprising commitment

Five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry commits to another SEC school over Georgia

Five-star defensive lineman recruit Justus Terry has committed to the Texas Longhorns over the Georgia Bulldogs in a shocking decision on the final day of the early signing period. Terry was projected to commit to Georgia across the recruiting industry, but decided to roll with the Longhorns.

The 6-foot-5, 275 pound defensive lineman plays high school football at Manchester High School in Manchester, Georgia. Terry is the No. 2 recruit in Georgia and the No. 2 defensive lineman in the country. Terry is ranked as a consensus five-star across all recruiting platforms.

Terry has had a wild recruitment. Terry was committed to Georgia back in summer of 2023 then decommited to commit to the USC Trojans. Later, he decommited from USC and now with his commitment Texas has the number one recruiting class.

Georgia was the leader after his decommitment, but their main competitors were the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers, where he recently took a visit late in November. Texas was a competitor but many thought they were on the outside looking in. The Longhorns had Terry in on an official visit when Georgia came into town.

Terry thoughts on his visit to Texas. “What drew me in was the connections that are out there. With being from Georgia I didn’t want to stay in a box,” said Terry.

Texas went in and swooped Terry for the next three to four years. His relationship with Texas defensive line coach Kenny Baker is key. “Man coach Baker has a relentless motor and he gets after it.”

Kirby Smart and company has landed Elijah Griffin and Isaiah Gibson to set them up for a dominant defensive front for the future. Georgia no longer has a realistic shot at the nation’s top recruiting class.

Paul Finebaum believes one SEC championship team is vulnerable

Why Paul Finebaum thinks the Texas Longhorns are vulnerable

The No. 2 Texas Longhorns (11-1) are favorites to win the SEC over the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (10-2). Texas has looked like the SEC’s team to beat since Georgia’s loss to Ole Miss.

However, SEC analyst Paul Finebaum does not think Texas is invincible. He mentioned on “The Paul Finebaum Show” that the Longhorns are vulnerable due to the strength of their schedule.

“Texas is vulnerable because of what it hasn’t done,” Finebaum said. “That’s, beat, what I’d call, a high-level team.”

Texas’s strength of schedule ranks 37th, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index. The Longhorns benefited from playing a Florida team without their top two quarterbacks and played one team that finished over .500 in SEC play outside of Georgia (Texas A&M).

Most importantly, their only matchup against a team currently ranked in the playoff rankings was Georgia, which they lost to at home, 30-15.

Georgia has the third-ranked SOS. The Bulldogs have shown weakness against FloridaKentucky, Mississippi State and Georgia Tech. Still, Georgia won by double digits against two teams in the top 10 (Tennessee and, of course, Texas).

Texas and Georgia play each other in the SEC championship. Either Texas wins, avenging its previous loss to Georgia, or Georgia racks up another win against a top-10 opponent.

Georgia vs. Texas series history entering SEC championship

Georgia Bulldogs versus Texas Longhorns football series history entering the SEC title game

The SEC championship will be between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Texas Longhorns. The game is a rematch and will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Texas leads the all-time series 4-2 against Georgia. What are some of the notable games in series history?

(2024) Georgia 30, Texas 15

Georgia went out in Austin and dominated defensively through all four quarters. Junior linebacker Jalon Walker took the college football world by storm with eight tackles, three sacks and three tackle for loss on Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. On the offensive end, running back Trevor Etienne showed why Georgia signed him in the offseason with 87 rushing yards and three touchdowns to uplift Carson Beck’s three turnovers.

(2019 Sugar Bowl) Texas 28, Georgia 21

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

The 2019 Sugar Bowl game featured notable moments, including Texas’ mascot, Bevo, charging toward Georgia’s Uga during the pregame. Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger accounted for 233 total yards and three touchdowns to help seal the victory. Jake Fromm threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.

(1984) Georgia 10, Texas 9

This game is remembered for Georgia pulling off a dramatic upset over Texas, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the nation and was a heavy favorite. The Longhorns were vying for a national championship but saw their hopes dashed with the loss. Georgia quarterback John Lastinger ran 17 yards for a touchdown with 3:22 left to play to capture the victory.

David Pollack believes Georgia is playoff lock

David Pollack believes both SEC Championship teams are playoff locks. However, UGA has to be worried with Alabama as the No. 11 seed

The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs and No. 2 Texas Longhorns have a rematch in the SEC championship this Saturday. Winning the conference championship is paramount for many teams to reach the College Football Playoff.

Former ESPN analyst and Georgia linebacker David Pollack doesn’t think so. On his YouTube channel “David Pollack College Football”, he stated that he believes both teams to be playoff locks.

“I think both teams are in the College Football Playoff regardless,” Pollack said.

Pollack believes that “Texas has the right identity on offense at the right time in the right moments.” That identity appears to be a reliance on a stout running game. Quintrevion Wisner has 344 rushing yards in his last two games. He also believes “the secondary just doesn’t give up big plays.”

In Georgia’s previous game with Texas (who was No. 1), the Bulldogs dominated the Longhorns’ 30-15. The Bulldogs generated tons of pressure, forcing four turnovers including two fumbles.

According to ESPN’s matchup predictor, Texas has a 61.5% chance to win the game and winning the SEC in their first year in the conference. If Georgia wins, it would be UGA’s second SEC title in the last three years.

Georgia should be a little worried with Alabama as the No. 11 seed. The Crimson Tide has a head-to-head win over Georgia, so UGA wants to avoid losing so the selection committee won’t put Georgia and Alabama in the same ranking group.

Georgia no longer has nation’s No. 1 recruiting class

Another SEC has surpassed Georgia football for the No. 1 signing class of 2025

The Georgia Bulldogs no longer have the country’s top recruiting class. Georgia’s class of 2025 was ranked as the best in the nation entering the early signing period.

However, Georgia lost a commitment from four-star running back recruit Ousmane Kromah. The Texas Longhorns, who Georgia plays in the SEC championship, surpassed Georgia for the No. 1 spot in 247Sports’ recruiting rankings.

Georgia and coach Kirby Smart have a legitimate chance to regain the crown with five-star defensive tackle Justus Terry’s commitment on Friday. Georgia has 27 commitments in the 2025 recruiting cycle. Twenty-three of Georgia’s commitments have signed with the Bulldogs.

Regardless of whether Georgia finishes with the No. 1 class, the Bulldogs are bringing in a ton of talent in 2025 cycle. Georgia fans should still be very excited and optimistic about the Bulldogs’ future.

Carson Beck names ‘most memorable moment’ from first game vs. Texas

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck recalls the what he remembers the most from UGA’s road win at Texas

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck looked back on Georgia’s 30-15 win at the Texas Longhorns ahead of the SEC championship.

“I think the most memorable moment in that game is when their fans started to throw stuff onto the field. That was one of the crazier moments in a game that I’ve ever experienced,” said Beck.

Beck and Georgia jumped out to a stunning 23-0 first half lead at Texas on Oct. 19. The Bulldogs forced four Texas turnovers and sacked the Longhorns seven times in the win. However, it is is not surprising that Beck remembers when Texas fans threw bottles on the field because of a controversial pass interference penalty. The penalty flag, which was waived off after a delay for clearing trash off the field, came on one of Beck’s three interceptions.

“That environment was a lot of fun to play in, and ultimately coming out with a win in that environment was really good for our team,” continued Beck. “Obviously, they’re a really good team. They have a good defense, a really good offense, and they’ve been really consistent throughout the season. They pose a good challenge for us, and it’s for the SEC (championship). I’m excited, and I know the guys are excited for this opportunity.”

Beck has 11 touchdowns and no interceptions over his past three games and will need to be sharp for Georgia to win the SEC championship. Last game, Beck completed 23 of 41 passes for 175 yards and three interceptions. He’ll look to take better care of the ball this time against the Longhorns.

Georgia faces rematch with Texas in SEC championship game

Georgia plays Texas in the SEC championship on Dec. 7 at 4:00 p.m. ET

The Georgia Bulldogs will have a rematch with the Texas Longhorns in the 2024 SEC championship game. Georgia already beat Texas 30-15 earlier this season.

Georgia won in Austin back in October thanks to a dominant defensive performance. Georgia forced four Texas turnovers and recorded seven sacks en route to a big road win over the Longhorns.

Of course, Georgia had some offensive struggles at Texas. Quarterback Carson Beck threw three interceptions. Texas fans threw bottles on the field following a controversial call in the second half that was reversed after a delay.

The SEC championship will kick off at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, Dec. 7. The SEC championship will be decided in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, and will be televised on ABC.

The winner will earn a bye in the College Football Playoff. Both Georgia and Texas are expected to make the playoff with a win or loss in the SEC title game.

Georgia faces rematch in CFP projections after win at Texas

Who does Georgia play in ESPN’s latest College Football Playoff projections after UGA’s win at Texas?

The Georgia Bulldogs are the No. 2 seed in ESPN’s latest College Football Playoff predictions (subscription required). In this scenario, Georgia would win the SEC championship game and receive a coveted first-round bye in the playoff.

Georgia’s first opponent is predicted to be the seventh-seeded Texas Longhorns. ESPN projects Georgia to face Texas in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. As the No. 2 seed, Georgia would play the winner of the game between No. 7 Texas and No. 10 BYU or Indiana (ESPN has two projections).

What confuses me about this projection is why is Georgia playing Texas in New Orleans. To my knowledge, the Bulldogs would be able to pick where they play in the quarterfinals as the No. 2 seed. If UGA can control where it plays, the Dawgs will almost certainly pick Atlanta, which is an option for the quarterfinals.

For now, ESPN has Texas ranked as the third-best at-large team behind Ohio State and Penn State. However, if the season ended today based on the SEC standings neither Georgia nor Texas would not make the SEC championship.

“Under my scenario, Georgia and Texas would meet again — possibly for the third time if they face each other in the SEC championship game — in the Sugar Bowl in the quarterfinals,” said Mark Schlabach of ESPN.

The expanded playoff brings more excitement for more teams in the postseason, but it opens up the possibility of some teams playing each other two or three times in one season.

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura projects Georgia will play No. 6 Ohio State in the semifinals in Miami. Schlabach has Georgia playing No. 3 Miami in Dallas.

Both analysts predict Georgia will meet No. 1 Oregon in the national championship. However, with potential games against Texas and Ohio State, there’s no guarantee the Bulldogs will advance to the title game.

Kirk Herbstreit raves about UGA after win at Texas

Where was “College GameDay’s” love for UGA before the Georgia-Texas game?

ESPN college football analyst and “College GameDay” panelist Kirk Herbstreit gives the Georgia Bulldogs a great deal of credit for their impressive 30-15 road win against the Texas Longhorns.

Herbstreit rated Georgia as his top performing team of Week 8 and considers head coach Kirby Smart and defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann to be his best performing coaches of the week. Georgia’s defense shut down the Texas offense with seven sacks and four forced fumbles.

Herbstreit rates Georgia star linebacker Jalon Walker as his second-best performing player of the week behind Missouri’s Brady Cook. Walker recorded three sacks and eight tackles in Georgia’s win.

“UGA defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, Kirby Smart and the Dawgs defense reminding the nation last week that you never underestimate an angry and motivated @GeorgiaFootball team,” said Herbstreit via social media.

GameDay picked against Georgia on Saturday, and the doubters helped fuel the Dawgs in their dominant performance.

Hebrstreit thinks there could be a rematch down the road between Georgia and Texas. The Bulldogs and Longhorns are prime SEC championship contenders even though neither team is in the top two of the SEC standings this week.

“Congrats to @GeorgiaFootball on a great win-have a feeling those teams will meet again at some point!” noted Herbstreit.

Takeaways from Georgia’s dominant win over Texas

Top takeaways from the Georgia’s dominating 30-15 victory over the Texas Longhorns

The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs (6-1), who were underdogs for the first time in 49 games going against the previously No. 1 Texas Longhorns (6-1), defeated them in dominating fashion, 30-15. Many people questioned if the Bulldogs were still legitimate SEC contenders, and Georgia answered almost all those questions with a big road win.

The running game was the focal point of the Georgia offense. Trevor Etienne had the best game of his Bulldog career with 86 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Unfortunately, Carson Beck did not have a good game. He threw for 175 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions on 41 attempts. Despite his 77.3 passer rating, he led six scoring drives.

However, the biggest reason the Bulldogs won was the stifling defense. It was a turnover buffet. The Bulldogs forced three fumbles and an interception. The pass rush, in particular, was excellent, sacking both Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning a combined seven times. The defense gave Georgia numerous short fields to work with. Overall, Georgia went up against one of the best offenses in the country and allowed 259 total yards and 29 rushing yards.

Overall, this game has Georgia fans on cloud nine. The Bulldogs are No. 2 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and, most importantly, the top ranked team in the SEC. The Bulldogs receive a much-deserved bye week before playing the Florida Gators (4-3) on Nov. 2.

Here are some takeaways from the Georgia-Texas game:

Mykel Williams is healthy, and the pass rush is better

One of the biggest reasons Georgia’s defense was lackluster against Mississippi State and Alabama was the pass rush lacked punch. Part of that was due to Mykel Williams tending to an ankle injury. Well, folks, I’m glad to say Williams looks back in game form, and he was otherworldly. He totaled two sacks and two tackles for loss.

His return was overshadowed by the stellar play of linebacker Jalon Walker and cornerback Daylen Everette. Walker had by far his best game of the season: three sacks and three tackles for loss. Everette forced and recovered two fumbles on cornerback blitzes. Both were helped out by Williams winning on the left side more often.

Old habits die hard

Many people, including Aaron Murray, believed Georgia’s identity was starting to change with Carson Beck at quarterback. In the championship years, the Bulldogs relied on a stout defense and running game, but it seemed they were getting away from that this season.

So how did they win against Texas? They relied on a stout running game and defense. Mainly, Trevor Etienne shined. Etienne had all three touchdowns for Georgia’s offense and racked up 89 yards on 19 carries. His prowess running the football helped Georgia dominate time of possession in the first half.

Carson Beck has to be better, but Georgia can still win without him

Unfortunately, the passing game just wasn’t there for Georgia. Carson Beck had his worst day of the season throwing the football. Sure, one of Beck’s three interceptions was due to bad luck on tips, but Georgia could’ve won by more if Beck had better ball placement on some throws.

Even then, Georgia didn’t need him to play amazingly to win. Texas only scored seven points off his three turnovers. The other two possessions were a three-and-out and a strip sack. Still, you’d like to see Beck show that form he showed last season more often.
