No. 8 Notre Dame vs. Georgia Tech: staff predictions for senior day

Not so much do the Irish win as much as – do the Irish cover?

Notre Dame concludes their 2021 home season this Saturday as 3-7 Georgia Tech makes the trip to South Bend.  The Irish are a significant favorite as they try to make a College Football Playoff push while the Yellow Jackets have to deal with a pair of top-10 teams in consecutive weeks to close their season as No. 1 Georgia awaits them next week.

It’s hard to envision an upset as the Irish have dominated against ACC teams in the regular season, but could this one end up being competitive?

Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire staff sees happening on senior day in South Bend:

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame vs. Georgia Tech

The Irish are a lock for this game, right?

Notre Dame has two games left in the regular season, and they figure to be pretty easy ones. The first of these contests come Saturday in its home finale against Georgia Tech. To see the Yellow Jackets win this one would be an upset unlike one the Irish have suffered in recent memory.

Let’s look at what some college football experts, including those on the Wire sites, are predicting for this game:

Notre Dame’s history vs. Georgia Tech

Another ACC team that Notre Dame has dominated historically

Notre Dame and Georgia Tech don’t play every year but for different parts of history did, with the Fighting Irish usually getting the upper hand.

When the two programs meet on Saturday it will be the second year in a row they have as Notre Dame took last year’s meeting, 31-13 in Atlanta.  That improved the Irish to 29-6-1 all-time against Georgia Tech.

The two programs first met in 1922 in a 13-3 Notre Dame win and would meet each year through 1929 with the Irish going 7-1 in that span.  The two would then again resume the series for eight consecutive years from 1938-1945 with the Irish again taking seven-of-eight.

Notre Dame and Georgia Tech split one-offs in 1953 and 1959 before the two would meet in 12 of 15 seasons between 1967 and 1981 with the Irish going 10-1-1 in that span.

The two didn’t play from 1981 until the 1997 opener when Notre Dame Stadium was rededicated and the Bob Davie era officially began with a 17-13 Irish victory.  The two would meet to conclude the 1998 season as Joe Hamilton and Georgia Tech would get the best of the Irish in the 1999 Gator Bowl, 35-28.

The two have met four times since 2006 with Notre Dame winning three of them, the 2007 opener being the exception as Georgia Tech rolled the Irish 33-3 that afternoon.

In all, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech have met 36 times with the Irish walking away victorious 29 times and tying once.  Perhaps the most famous moment in the history of the series was barely noticed when it actually occurred.

That is, when walk-on Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger entered the 1975 contest late and recorded a sack on the game’s final play.  Ruettiger’s name wasn’t even mentioned by the announcer but that walk-on would be the centerpiece of the famous film 18 years later.

Meeting number-37 comes your way Saturday and if history has anything to say about it, the Irish should be celebrating yet another 10-win season shortly after the sun goes down in South Bend.

Notre Dame star safety Kyle Hamilton done for the regular season

Notre Dame football news: Kyle Hamilton done for remainder of regular season

Unless there is a national championship at stake there is no reason we should see Kyle Hamilton play for Notre Dame again.

It wasn’t much of a surprise but was newsworthy nonetheless Monday when Brian Kelly revealed that Notre Dame All-American safety Kyle Hamilton won’t be returning this regular season.  Hamilton suffered a knee injury in the second half of the USC game on October 23 and hasn’t played since.

Kelly’s full-quote on when we might see Hamilton in blue and gold again went as follows:

“The injury itself is generally a six week injury, so there was some meniscus involvement. But that is no longer an issue. There’s no meniscus at all. He’s got a great meniscus, but this is much more about the healing around the knee itself and there’s no structural damage at all. But it generally takes about six weeks. We’re dealing with with an injury that usually takes about six weeks. It’s the tissue. I’m not a doctor, so I don’t want to give too much information here. There’s tissue and fibers that kind of connect the tissue and fiber around the joint and then in the knee and they get pinched or pulled and that’s the issue that that has to heal. So, it just takes some time.” – Brian Kelly

When asked if Hamilton was for certain done this regular season:

“Six weeks would take him through the end of the regular season and then we have to see where we are with college football playoffs, bowl games, things like that.” – Brian Kelly

Like Kelly, I’m no doctor, but based off of what the head coach said it certainly seems like the only way Kyle Hamilton plays for Notre Dame again is if the Irish are in the College Football Playoff.

And I’m perfectly alright with that.  Stay healthy and go get paid to be one of the best in the world at your craft, young man!

Is there reason for concern with Georgia Tech coming to town?

Notre Dame enters the final few furlongs of the 2021 regular season with the College Football Playoff still a realistic possibility.  The 9-1 Fighting Irish conclude the home portion of their schedule Saturday as they play host to Georgia Tech who is making their first trek to South Bend since 2015.

See It: Notre Dame Stadium blanketed with snow

As much as the first snow of the year is unwelcomed it does mean for some nice photographs on Notre Dame’s campus.

Over the weekend, where I live in the Chicago suburbs we were hit with our first snow of the season.  It came down rather hard a couple of times on Friday but none of it stuck and we had nothing more than a few flurries during the weekend.

On Friday night in Grandville, Michigan, snow fell hard as Notre Dame commitment in the 2022 recruiting class Josh Burnham helped guide Traverse City Central to a playoff victory.

Then on Sunday the snow hit South Bend and it took freshman running back Logan Diggs of Louisiana a bit by surprise.

As unwelcome as the first snow usually is, it does however leave Notre Dame campus looking beautiful.

And Notre Dame Stadium doesn’t look have bad with a white blanket on top of it, either.

Monday will be chilly in South Bend but temperatures are expected to be in the 50s this week so that snow will likely be long gone by the time Notre Dame hosts Georgia Tech for senior day this Saturday.

Notre Dame statistical leaders through 10 games

It’s up to these players to make the final home game for Notre Dame’s seniors a memorable one.

Notre Dame has one final home game this season, and it comes against Georgia Tech. Will the Irish’s leaders be able to send their seniors off with a bang on their special day? If you want to know who they are, it’s these players:

ESPN FPI Projects Notre Dame’s conclusion to 2021

A slightly better than 1-in-3 chance Notre Dame wins out?

Notre Dame sits at 8-1, has a path, albeit a difficult one, to the College Football Playoff, and has three games they’ll be favored in remaining to close 2021.

How do the formulas see Notre Dame finishing this year?

We’ve looked at ESPN’s FPI throughout the year and looked at what kind of chances they give Notre Dame to win their remaining games.  Now with only three games left their outlook is bright for the Irish to finish 11-1.  Here is how they’re projecting the final three games of 2021 for Notre Dame:

Notre Dame now favored in all remaining games per ESPN FPI

ESPN’s FPI has changed their course on how Notre Dame will finish 2021 compared to what they had a week ago.

I have a love-hate relationship with ESPN’s Football Power Index.  I love it because it truly does help tell you some of the teams that have had better results than their play merits while also telling you some of the teams that perhaps have been bitten by bad luck.

With that said, teams that regularly find ways to lose games they shouldn’t, shouldn’t get the benefit of the doubt.  For example, the FPI formula still ranks Michigan 10 spots ahead of Michigan State despite the Spartans coming back and beating the Wolverines last week, and has both Florida (4-4) and Texas (4-4) ranked in their top-11.

With the good and bad in mind, here is what the FPI says about Notre Dame the rest of the way.  Remember, a week ago they had the Irish as an underdog in one remaining contest.

FPI currently has the Irish rated as the 14th best team in the nation.

Predicting outcome of every remaining Georgia game, including postseason

Predicting every game remaining on UGA’s schedule, plus the postseason games as well.

The Georgia Bulldogs are 8-0 and ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

With four regular season games to go, it’s hard to imagine UGA losing a matchup remaining on its schedule: Missouri, Tennessee, Charleston Southern, Georgia Tech.

But what about the postseason? Can Georgia go 15-0 and bring home the national title? Will it slip up in the SEC Championship against Alabama?

We predicted the outcome of every game remaining on the schedule, the SEC Championship and the College Football Playoff. Enjoy.
