Georgia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Yellow Jackets miss from the Atlantic Division?

There aren’t a ton of layups in the relatively even Atlantic, but missing Syracuse, Louisville, and Boston College isn’t a good thing. The Yellow Jackets don’t have to face defending Atlantic champion Wake Forest, and missing NC State is a huge win, but …

Clemson on a Monday night isn’t a fun way to kickoff the season, and there’s a date at Florida State in late October that’s going to be a must win, because …

Georgia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: Someone doesn’t like the Yellow Jackets

Yeah, there are four home games over a six-game stretch after playing Clemson in Atlanta – which is sort of a home game, but it’s being played in Mercedes-Benz Stadium – but the road games are UCF and Pitt.

That’s bad, the finishing kick is worse.

There’s a nice eight-day break before the last five games, but four road games in five weeks isn’t fair. It’s not just the Georgia Tech is has to go away from home, but closing at North Carolina and Georgia is mean.

Georgia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Good … luck.

There’s Western Carolina, and there’s a home game against Duke. That’s it.

Where are the other sure wins with non-conference games against Ole Miss, at UCF, and at Georgia? The next-easiest ACC home game after Duke is either Virginia or Miami.

The Yellow Jackets will likely be underdogs in at least ten games. It’s going to take a few mega-breaks to get to six wins.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The transformation continues to take awhile. The Yellow Jackets are still trying to pivot away from the option offense under Paul Johnson, and there’s been more of a passing game to balance things out, but the consistency isn’t quite there.

The offense averaged 390 yards and just 24 points per game, but when it worked, it was terrific. Now it has to score.

After the 16-13 win over Florida State, the Yellow Jackets were 2-0 when scoring more than 27 points and 0-7 when scoring that many or fewer. There’s some work to be done, but …

Jeff Sims appears to be a keeper. The 6-3, 215-pounder stepped in as a  freshman and threw 13 touchdown passes and ran for close to 500 yards and six scores. There were 13 picks, and the passing attack wasn’t consistent enough, but the skill and upside are there.

With backup and former starter James Graham off to Georgia Southern, it’s a thin group behind Sims with Jordan Yates the main option after getting in a little work.

The receivers aren’t all that bad. It’s a deep group and the passing game spreads the ball around, but as long as big plays are there, all is fine. The passing game wasn’t Alabama, but averaging over 13 yards per catch is a good thing.

Leading receiver Jalen Camp is gone, but Malachi Carter is a 6-3, 200-pound veteran who averaged 14.5 yards per catch with three touchdowns. Junior Adonicas Sanders is another good deep threat who caught 17 passes, and there’s more 6-2ish, 200ish pound receivers ready to shine. Also a big part of the passing game is …

Jahmyr Gibbs can do a little of everything. The 5-11, 200-pound second-year freshman was second on the team with 24 catches and was second on the team in rushing behind Sims.

2019 leading rusher Jordan Mason is the team’s best runner with good power and 100-yard, carry-the-offense toughness – he missed four games last year – and sophomore Dontae Smith is a quick hitter who averaged close to seven yards per carry.

Now the offensive line has to get the job done.

It’s been a decent line so far in the Geoff Collins era, but now it has to replace two starters and has to get more out of the young, big options being brought in over the last few years.

Junior Mikey Minihan is a solid interior blocker, and 6-6, 330-pound Jordan Williams is a promising young option, and 6-7, 320-pound former Vanderbilt grad transfer Devin Cochran is expected to finally be in the mix after he committed last year but didn’t play.

Games vs. The Coastal: Boston College, at Clemson,

Missed Teams From The Atlantic: Florida State, Louisville, NC State, Syracuse, Wake Forest

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Football Schedule Analysis: It’s an easy start, and the Yellow Jackets need Northern Illinois and Kennesaw State to warm up. On the good side, four of the first five games are at home. On the other side, two of those home games against North Carolina and Pitt, and the road game in between them all is at Clemson.

And then comes the run of three road games in four, and that’s finished off by the date at Miami. Throw in the date at Notre Dame and the regular season finale against Georgia, and … uh oh.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: 7-5. There’s an off-chance that Georgia Tech gets everything to work and pulls of big home wins over North Carolina and Pitt early on. It doesn’t get thumped in the middle of the season, gets by Boston College, and it does just enough to come up with a winning campaign.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: 3-9. There are way too many almost sure-thing losses with the road games at Clemson, Notre Dame and Miami along with the home dates with North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Georgia. The Yellow Jackets could win one of those, maybe even two, but in the worst possible scenario, there are misses against everyone else, too.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Offense 3 Things To Know

The offense was supposed to undergo an overhaul, but it turned out to be far tougher than simply changing around the style. Head coach Geoff Collins and offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude had to try fitting a square peg into a round hole, looking to create a diverse spread attack with players built for a triple-option offense.

The Yellow Jackets aren’t looking to be 2019 LSU or anything when it comes to bombing away, but they’re still going to go through growing pains trying to generate more of a passing attack. For an O that was dead last in the nation in red-zone scoring percentage, 125th in third down tries, and averaging a paltry 286 yards and 16.7 points overall.

Finding the right quarterback continues to be the first piece to fit in. Lucas Johnson transferred to San Diego State, Tobias Oliver is a receiver, and asking for freshmen Jeffrey Sims and Tucker Gleason to be factors right away is a lot.

Sophomore James Graham just has to be efficient. He only completed 45% of his passes for 1,164 yards and 12 touchdowns with seven picks, and he didn’t push the ball down the field enough. He’s a good runner, and he had moments when he came through with key passes, but again, he has to be more effective and steadier.

Are the receivers in place to do more with the passing game? The recruiting class was heavy on pass catchers who’ll all get early work. 5-10, 155-pound Ahmarean Brown had an effective freshman season, averaging 19 yards per catch with seven touchdowns on just 21 grabs.

In all, five of the top six wide receivers are back, but to put the Georgia Tech passing game into perspective, its receivers combined to catch 124 passes for 1,607 yards and 14 touchdowns. LSU’s Ja’Marr chase caught 84 passes for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns by himself.

It’s not that the offensive linemen in place weren’t good blockers, it’s that they were good blockers for a different style. The line was missing a ton of big thumpers, and it had a whole lot of issues trying to keep defensive fronts out of the backfield.

A few pieces are already in place, but it’s going to be up to 6-7, 320-pound Vanderbilt transfer Devin Cochran to take on a starting role right away at one tackle spot, and 6-6, 310-pound Tennessee transfer Ryan Johnson to step in at guard.

Jordan Mason is back to carry the ground game, and 212-pound Jamious Griffin will get more work after getting in a little early work. There are big, good rushers in place who were built to handle the work, but they need more room to move.

The Georgia Bulldogs blew the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets out of the water 52-7 today in Atlanta. Georgia now can focus on the SEC Championship against the LSU Tigers, who are crushing the Texas A&M Aggies. LSU will be a mighty challenge for Georgia. UGA will be without George Pickens in the first half.

Here’s what UGA Twitter had to say after Georgia’s big-win in Atlanta:

It was all bad news for the Yellow Jackets, who were able to set a new school record!

Can Georgia football continue their biggest advantage over Tech?

The Georgia Bulldogs and Kirby Smart have been dominating the Georgia Tech in the recruiting. Can Geoff Collins flip the script?

The Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have a rivalry that goes deeper than what happens on the football field. The Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets battle throughout the year for talented recruits in the state of Georgia. UGA fans know the Dawgs has dominated in-state recruiting since Kirby Smart took over, but is one of their best advantages, a lack of legitimate in-state recruiting competition fading away?

The last time Georgia Tech landed a top twenty-five recruiting class was in 2007! Back in 2007, the Yellow Jackets recruited several NFL players: OLB Derrick Morgan, S Morgan Burnett, and RB Jonathan Dwyer. Georgia Tech struggled mightily in recruiting, largely thanks to the triple option system, which no defender want to practice against and no NFL offense runs.

Now, under first year head coach Geoff Collins, the Yellow Jackets have the 25th best class of 2020. The results on the field haven’t been pretty, but Georgia Tech is poised to improve. Everybody knew switching systems is more than a one year process.

Enter the Georgia Bulldogs, who have been dominating recruiting in the state of Georgia. Kirby Smart has Georgia competing with the elite programs across the country in recruiting and on the field. UGA’s previous recruiting class to be ranked below tenth was all the way back in 2013. Let’s be honest, Georgia’s biggest recruiting competition comes from the SEC. That being said, Georgia Tech isn’t going to be a pushover moving forward.

Georgia’s class of 2020 is ranked fifth in the country. The Bulldogs can send a message to recruits with another big-win over the Yellow Jackets this Saturday. As for now, Georgia Tech seems to be trending in the right direction. Will they be able to improve in their second year under Geoff Collins? Lots of second year coaches struggled to make the leap this past season. He’s not going to make the National Championship game like Kirby Smart did in his second season in Athens.

The Georgia Bulldogs will travel to Georgia Tech for a noon kickoff on Saturday, November 30th. The Dawgs will look to continue bullying the Yellow Jackets in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. The game in Atlanta will be televised on ABC.

Georgia will likely come into the game with their College Football Playoff hopes on the line. The Bulldogs are currently 9-1 and ranked forth in the country. On the other end of the spectrum are the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets are 2-8 and just lost to Virginia Tech 45-0. Georgia Tech is transitioning out of the triple option, which has been a struggle including: a 24-2 loss to Temple and a 27-24 loss to the Citadel. Tech was able to knock off Miami and South Florida, but that won’t exactly strike fear into Kirby Smart, Jake Fromm, and the Bulldogs.

Below are the game times for the rest of the SEC on rivalry week:

It should be another interesting rivalry week this year. Alabama against Auburn has to be the SEC’s best game in rivalry week. Will Texas A&M at LSU go to seven overtimes again?
