SEC Tournament projections: Where does Georgia basketball stand?

SEC Tournament outlook using current conference standings.

After starting out hot, Georgia basketball is in a slump as the SEC Tournament grows closer. UGA has until March 13 to get back on track and secure a better seed.

The Bulldogs were 12-3 headed into a matchup with No. 5 Tennessee on Jan. 13, riding 10-game win streak. Since that six-point loss to the Vols, Georgia has gone 3-7 in its last 10 games, including a stretch of six-straight losses.

UGA is likely out of NCAA Tournament contention, but that doesn’t mean an SEC Tournament run is out of the cards. All 14 SEC teams will participate in the event.

The Bulldogs need to build off a 76-64 win over Vanderbilt on Wednesday to get a better slot in the conference tournament. Georgia currently sits 11th in the SEC, which projects UGA as an 11th seed. That would pit the Bulldogs against No. 14-seed Missouri (8-18, 0-13 SEC) in the first round.

The first four seeds of the tournament are given a bye through the first two rounds, while the top 10 seeds will get a first-round bye. If the Bulldogs’ win their matchup, they’ll take on the No. 6 seed in the second round. That’s only the beginning of a tough route against some of the best teams in the country.

Georgia at Vanderbilt basketball: TV, preview and prediction

Georgia basketball looks to snap a six game losing streak at Vanderbilt on Wednesday night

The Georgia Bulldogs (14-11, 4-8) basketball team is on a six game losing skid. The Bulldogs are desperate as they hit the road to face the Vanderbilt Commodores (7-18, 2-10) in an SEC clash on Wed., Feb. 21 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Georgia-Vanderbilt game will be televised on the SEC Network.

Head coach Mike White and the Bulldogs have seen their NCAA Tournament hopes decline significantly over the past six games. Georgia needs to go 6-0 or 5-1 over its final six games of the regular season in order to be back in the NCAA Tournament conversation.

Georgia is 2-8 in its last 10 games after going on a 10-game winning streak earlier in the season. The Bulldogs have lost several games with halftime leads and have lost by more than 10 points just twice this season.

Vanderbilt has won just four of its last 21 games. The Commodores would have to win the SEC tournament to make the NCAA Tournament.

Georgia’s leading scorer is Jabri Abdur-Rahim at 12.7 points per game.  Vanderbilt guard Ezra Manjon is the Commodores’ leading scorer at 14.1 points per game. ESPN gives Georgia a 73.5% chance to defeat Vanderbilt.

Prediction: Georgia 73, Vanderbilt 68

Georgia finally gets back in the winning column with a road win at Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs do finally win a close game game and snap their losing streak.

An Alabama comeback win over Georgia? Nothing new. Check out the top images from the Crimson Tide’s road win.

Despite a double-digit deficit early in the game, Alabama came from behind to defeat Georgia on the road to maintain sole possession of first place in the SEC.

The game began with the Bulldogs outscoring the Crimson Tide 17-2, but a strong, late second-half performance from Alabama propelled the Tide to win the game by nine with a final score of 85-76.

Mark Sears and Grant Nelson led the team in points with 23 and 20 respectively. Their strong performances were the main reasons why Alabama was able to improve to 15-6 on the season with an in-conference record of 7-1, with the lone loss being to Tennessee.

Next up, Nate Oats and his team will return home to Tuscaloosa to take on Mississippi State. Before then, relive the action from Alabama’s win over Georgia with the top images from the matchup.

Everything Nate Oats said following Alabama’s 85-76 win at Georgia

It’s safe to say Nate Oats was proud of his team’s second-half performance on Wednesday night

On Wednesday night from Athens, Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball showed a lot of toughness with their come-from-behind win over the Georgia Bulldogs, 85-76

After falling down 17-2 in the first half where the Tide could not buy a basket, the Crimson Tide would make some mini runs throughout the remainder of the first half but would still trail 41-27 at the half.

Then, Coach Oats and Alabama regrouped at the half and would dominate the Bulldogs in the final 20 minutes, outscoring UGA 58-35.

Following the dramatic comeback, Coach Oats would speak with the media. Below is everything he had to say:

Alabama remains resilient, comes back to take down Georgia

Alabama basketball did not quit on the road against Georgia and earned a statement win.

After suffering a loss to Tennessee on the road, Alabama basketball had two impressive wins at home. Now, the Crimson Tide took this winning streak on the road, as the team came back to defeat Georgia in Athens 85-76.

Despite being down double digits in the first half and for a decent chunk of the second half, Nate Oats’ team did not slow down. After climbing back to tie the game with under 10 minutes to go, the Crimson Tide fought hard for the lead. Once the Tide got the lead, they weren’t letting go.

Mark Sears led the team in scoring with 23, but Grant Nelson was not far behind with 20. A full box score breakdown will be shared on Roll Tide Wire soon.

Alabama now moves on to Mississippi State with an overall record of 15-6 and an in-conference record of 7-1. The Crimson Tide stands alone atop the SEC, but South Carolina looms just behind.

Georgia basketball blows late lead, chance to upset No. 5 Tennessee

Georgia fans, media react after the Dawgs blow a late lead against No. 5 Tennessee

Georgia basketball’s 10-game winning streak is over after the Bulldogs blew an 11-point lead in a 85-79 home defeat to the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers. Georgia missed a prime opportunity to build its NCAA Tournament resume.

Down the stretch, Georgia’s offense got stagnant. The Bulldogs could not get a bucket and kept fouling Tennessee. The Volunteers and guard Dalton Knecht (36 points) knocked down their free throws.

Georgia played well in a rowdy Stegeman Coliseum atmosphere. Georgia suffered its first home loss of the season, but looks like a very tough team to beat at home.

The Dawgs hit 14 three-pointers, which is a season-high. However, Georgia went cold late. Freshman Blue Cain hit a few three-pointers late, but that was Georgia’s only offense. The Bulldogs could not score late against Tennessee’s half-court defense. This one stings for Georgia, who falls to 12-4 overall. Tennessee moves to 12-4.

Despite the disappointing loss, Georgia fans should still feel very good about the direction of the basketball program under second-year head coach Mike White.

Georgia’s next basketball game will be Tuesday at South Carolina. How did Georgia fans and media react after the Dawgs blew a late lead against Tennessee?
