How Corey Davis’ retirement affects the Jets’ WR depth chart

Corey Davis announced his retirement from the NFL and his departure certainly changes the outlook of the Jets’ depth chart at WR.

Corey Davis has been away from the New York Jets in recent weeks and the veteran wideout announced on Wednesday that he was stepping away from football at 28 years old. While we wish the best for Davis moving forward, his departure does alter the outlook of the Jets’ depth chart at the wide receiver position.

Entering the 2023 season, Davis was in the final year of a three-year, $37.5 million deal that he signed with the Jets in free agency ahead of the 2021 season. Even though the Jets brought in Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman, and Randall Cobb this offseason, Davis was still slated to have a role in the offense after the team elected to keep him around.

Davis is a versatile wideout who can contribute through the air and as a run blocker, so he would’ve seen the field a decent amount despite the new additions. But with Davis now out of the picture, the roles for certain players will change in 2023.

Garrett Wilson’s role in the offense doesn’t drastically change as he was expected to be the go-to option for Rodgers regardless of the new weapons in the offense. While Lazard signed a contract that indicated he’d have a definitive role in the offense already, he’ll certainly relied upon even more on the field because of his run-blocking ability and experience with Rodgers.

Hardman and Cobb figure to rotate as the No. 3 wide receiver in the offense behind Wilson and Lazard. Who Davis’ exit really affects are the guys who are competing for roster spots. Players like Jason Brownlee, Xavier Gipson and Malik Taylor now have better odds of making the 53-man roster unless the Jets look to improve at the position when other teams are making roster cuts.

Davis was never going to have an extremely prominent role in the offense with a crowded group of pass catchers on the Jets this season. That being said, the depth chart is now shaping up to potentially be Wilson, Lazard, Hardman, and Cobb with Brownlee, Gipson and Taylor seeming like the most likely candidates to make the roster with Davis now gone.

Randall Cobb’s Hard Knocks speech made Aaron Rodgers sound like the boogeyman to his Jets WRs

The Jets’ receivers better not step out of line. Or else.

Like most great quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers has a reputation for holding his playmakers to an almost impossibly high standard. In particular, towards the latter years of his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers was notorious for dressing down just about every green-and-gold playmaker sans Davante Adams.

And it seems like nothing has changed with the New York Jets — for the worse.

During a key sequence of the latest episode of Hard Knocks, veteran receiver Randall Cobb spoke to the Jets’ young receiver room. As a Rodgers favorite for a decade in Green Bay, Cobb knows how the signal caller approaches practice better than anyone. He knows how to make Rodgers happy. And he knows how to put him on edge, too.

So, Cobb issued a stark warning to the Jets’ outside playmakers about attending to details, in turn making Rodgers sound like some kind of horror movie monster:

I’m gonna be honest. I wouldn’t be encouraged if I was a Jets fan watching this clip.

Part of the problem with Rodgers’ latter years in Green Bay was that he refused to trust other receivers, almost to the point of stubbornness. He wouldn’t have force-fed Davante Adams over 300 targets from 2020-2021 if he believed in other Packers players. And such an insistence made Green Bay’s offense easier to game-plan for. Focus on Adams, and suddenly, the Packers’ attack felt extremely limited.

It’s too early to make any definitive declarations, but a similar situation could be boiling with Gang Green. Based on other Hard Knocks sequences, Rodgers appears to already be developing quite a rapport with sophomore receiver Garrett Wilson. In fact, during the latest episode, Rodgers called Wilson “special” on multiple occasions, suggesting he’ll (rightfully) be his go-to guy.

The concern is whether Rodgers looks Wilson’s way almost too much. If the Jets will prevail in a logjam of an AFC, they’ll need a balanced offensive approach. They’ll need to keep defenses on their toes with every weapon at their disposal. They can’t succeed if Rodgers fixates on Wilson to the point that he starts ignoring his other options. As much as the onus is on the Jets receivers to keep Rodgers happy and earn his trust, it’s on him to mellow out and perhaps give his teammates a little more leeway.

The success of the Jets’ 2023 campaign could depend on it.

Aaron Rodgers gave Garrett Wilson a full endorsement by comparing his No. 17 jersey to Davante Adams

It’s safe to say Rodgers thinks Wilson can be a superstar.

In the second act of his NFL career with the New York Jets, Aaron Rodgers will need weapons to throw to. It’s early, but it appears former top-10 pick Garrett Wilson has already cemented himself as Rodgers’ favorite target with Gang Green. The two have consistently linked up during Jets preseason and training camp.

And based on a recent social media post, it looks like Rodgers is all in on his new No. 17.

Late Wednesday night, Rodgers posted a photo of himself and Wilson talking and holding each other. The caption should furl an eyebrow for anyone familiar with Rodgers’ career. It says, “Always love my 17s,” in reference to Wilson sharing the jersey number of Rodgers’ former dynamic Green Bay Packers partner-in-crime, Davante Adams. The latter, of course, was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in the spring of 2022, where he continued playing like an All-Pro.

If that isn’t a ringing endorsement of what Wilson is capable of with a star quarterback, I don’t know what is.

Wilson spent the better part of his rookie season catching passes from a rotating cast of glorified backups in Zach Wilson and Mike White. He still caught 83 passes for 1103 yards and averaged over 13 yards a reception. Such production under difficult circumstances offered a mere glimpse of what the 23-year-old receiver can accomplish in the NFL.

Not even Adams — who Wilson is getting compared to — was that good right away as a professional flanker.

The sky should be the limit with a future Hall of Fame quarterback throwing him the ball now. And said future Hall of Famer seems to believe he and Wilson will reach those heights together.

Fantasy football: Where to draft New York Jets WR Garrett Wilson

Analyzing New York Jets WR Garrett Wilson’s 2023 fantasy football ADP and where to target him in fantasy drafts.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Wide receiver Garrett Wilson made an immediate impact for the New York Jets as a rookie in 2022, being named the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year. Below, we look at Garrett Wilson‘s 2023 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Believing that last year’s Jets team was just a QB away from making the playoffs, New York brought in a future Hall-Of-Fame QB to remedy that. Even with 3 different QBs starting in 2022, Wilson put up great rookie numbers, and with Aaron Rodgers now throwing him the ball, those numbers are expected to be even better.

Another outstanding rookie for New York last year was CB Sauce Gardner, who was named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. Another year of going head-to-head against Gardner in practice will also help Wilson improve, and you’ll see it in his numbers this year.

Garrett Wilson’s ADP: 21.78

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Wilson’s ADP projects him being drafted in the middle-late 2nd round for most leagues. He ranks 9th in ADP among WRs, a little low given the addition of Rodgers, but still good value for his production. Indications are that Wilson and Rodgers have a strong connection so far, another reason to expect an even better sophomore year than his rookie season.

Taking Wilson early in the 2nd round isn’t a big reach if some other top WR1’s are already off the board. Right above in ADP is Detroit Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown at No.  8 (17.42) with Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams 10th (21.68). Taking Wilson over either of them is not a stretch, as  WR Jameson Williams will get a lot of looks in the Lions offense and there are questions about Adams’ connection to new QB Jimmy Garropolo.

Where should you draft Wilson?

Wilson’s fantasy value will obviously get a boost with the addition of Rodgers.

There are about 7-9 WRs I would draft ahead of Wilson, but he is a very good WR1 option for a lot of fantasy teams. The Jets have a lot of versatility in their offense with Rodgers and return of 2nd-year RB Breece Hall from injury, but Wilson will still be the biggest threat in the passing game.

In most leagues Wilson will be a very good WR1 who should be available in the 2nd round for teams taking a RB or TE in Round 1. If you are in a bigger league, say 14 teams, and Wilson is available as an early 2nd-round pick; do not hesitate to grab him. He and Rodgers will have a great connection that will result in a lot of targets.

Garrett Wilson might have elaborately trolled Sean Payton with his preseason outfit choices

The Jets’ feud with Sean Payton continues to be absolutely hilarious.

Sean Payton made somewhat minor news earlier this week when he revealed what he didn’t want to see from his Denver Broncos this preseason.

Among the more notable tidbits was that Payton didn’t want to see anyone wearing “Gilligan” hats and sunglasses. Also, he didn’t want them doing any interviews while a game was actually taking place.

As a feud between Payton and the New York Jets continues to boil, New York receiver Garrett Wilson appeared to listen to Payton’s pleas. As in, he heard what Payton said and seemed to deliberately do what the Denver coach didn’t want to see during the Jets’ preseason game.

Twitter user Raj (@RajPC1)  pointed out the seemingly way-too-convenient coincidence:

There’s no real way to confirm this was Wilson’s intent — he’s not a Broncos player, and there’s no guarantee Payton would even be paying attention to Jets preseason action. But, for what it’s worth, Wilson did “like” references to the apparent troll job on his Twitter profile. That doesn’t mean it’s what he planned. Wilson could’ve simply enjoyed that people made the connection.

If this was what Wilson indeed intended, what brilliant subtlety.

Garrett Wilson trolls Sean Payton with outfit during in-game interview

Garrett Wilson scores the latest point against Sean Payton and the Broncos.

The battle between the New York Jets and Denver Broncos continues to brew long before the teams actually play a game against each other on October 8.

The feud between Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and Broncos head coach Sean Payton may have died down a bit, at least for now, the overall war wages on. The latest round went to Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

Payton recently held a press conference and during that, he described some rules he had for players during the first preseason game Friday after they are done in the game.

Per James Palmer of NFL Network, Payton’s rules included uniforms coming off even after they are out of the game, no sunglasses, no “Gilligan” hats — his fancy term for bucket hats — and no interviews during the game.

Well, guess what Wilson did during the Jets’ preseason game against the Carolina Panthers Saturday? You guessed it, he checked off the opposite of almost all those boxes, save for not keeping his jersey on.

Bucket hat? Check. Sunglasses? Check. In-game interview? Check.

It’s just more shade to the Broncos after Payton called out Hackett for his work last season in Denver. Since then, numerous players and coaches have had Hackett’s back, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

October 8 can’t get here soon enough. The headlines just keep building.

Torry Holt names Garrett Wilson as his favorite young WR to watch entering the 2023 season

Garrett Wilson is Torry Holt’s favorite young WR to watch and he believes the Jets’ 2nd-year WR can be special with Aaron Rodgers.

Garrett Wilson is already considered a wide receiver that had a breakout season as a rookie in 2022 with the New York Jets, and he’s caught the attention of many entering the 2023 season. With Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback now, Torry Holt mentioned Wilson as his favorite young wideout to watch on “Good Morning Football”.

Wilson hauled in 83 of his 147 targets for 1,103 yards and four touchdowns in 2022, earning him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. The Ohio State product recorded these numbers despite having Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, and Mike White targeting him through the air.

The Jets now have Rodgers orchestrating the offense and Wilson is expected to be the go-to target for the four-time MVP. The second-year wideout suffered an ankle injury early in training camp, but he’s since returned to practice and doesn’t appear to be dealing with anything serious.

There are a plethora of talented young pass catchers in the NFL, especially with each draft class producing a couple of potential stars in recent years. So for someone like Holt — who had 920 receptions and 13,382 receiving yards in his legendary career — to praise Wilson before his second season with the Jets, you have a feeling that the 10th overall pick from a year ago is primed for a special season in 2023.

Garrett Wilson returns to practice on Wednesday in limited fashion

Garrett Wilson is practicing in a limited fashion for the Jets on Wednesday as they begin joint practices with the Panthers.

Fans of the New York Jets can take a sigh of relief as Garrett Wilson is easing his way back onto the practice field. Amid the Jets holding joint practice sessions with the Carolina Panthers ahead of Saturday’s preseason matchup, Wilson was seen practicing in a limited fashion.

Wilson sustained a sprained ankle early in training camp for the Jets and he’s been unable to practice since. The Jets realize there is no need to rush the talented wideout back as New York has its sights set on contending this season.

While Wilson has spent time building his rapport with Aaron Rodgers this offseason, he’s been missing valuable reps with his new quarterback. On the other hand, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year should have no issues getting in sync with Rodgers once he returns.

The Jets are going to be cautious with Wilson until he’s one hundred percent healthy, so he likely won’t see much action against the Panthers in practice this week. At the very least, Wilson has returned to practice and nothing indicates that he won’t be ready for the regular-season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Ohio State football All Madden 24 team – Offense

We kick off our All Madden 24 Ohio State football team starting with the offense. #GoBucks

The release of Madden NFL player ratings always ignites debates around the football world. The ratings tend to draw criticism from fans and even from players themselves.

This was no different this year as the Madden 24 ratings were recently released. While the ratings are far from perfect, they’re still a good way to evaluate players and teams. These ratings featured a total of 60 former Ohio State players. The ratings are a good way to evaluate which college program has the best alumni in the NFL.

Former alumni of college programs like Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, and Clemson all have a very good collection of former players in the NFL right now.

It’s always fun to compile a list of players that would be on an All-Ohio State NFL team based on Madden 24 ratings, starting with the offense for this year’s team. Feel free to replicate and dominate the beloved game.

Seven Buckeyes featured in CBS Sports NFL Top 100 List

Seven former Buckeyes made the list. #GoBucks

With football season quickly approaching, a fun exercise around NFL social media is to rank the top 100 players in the league.  These rankings are a fun way to generate interesting discussions and debates.

CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco recently partook in this as he released his top 100 players in the NFL for 2023. Prisco made some good points expressing just how difficult it is to put together a list like this.

“Putting together the list is a real challenge,” wrote Prisco. “There are so many talented players, and after the stars at the top it’s tough to separate the players who land from 20-45 or so. So before you get worked up about my list, which you will, try to put one of your own together. It isn’t easy.”

Prisco ended up including seven former Ohio State players on his top 100 rankings. Here’s who made the list that used to call Columbus home.
