Fantasy football: Where to draft Las Vegas Raiders QB Gardner Minshew

Analyzing Las Vegas Raiders QB Gardner Minshew’s 2024 fantasy football ADP and where to target him in fantasy drafts.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Las Vegas Raiders QB Gardner Minshew II earned his first Pro Bowl appearance after starting 13 games for the Indianapolis Colts a season ago. Taken in the 6th round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Minshew was originally selected 178th overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars and made a name for himself there in 2019. He eventually found his way to Philadelphia for two seasons and then to Indy for 1 before ending up with the Raiders.

Below, we look at Gardner Minshew’s 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Entering 2024, Minshew will not be the among the highest-taken QBs, but he has been efficient, consistent, and productive over the years. The dual-threat signal-caller is intriguing in terms of fantasy value.

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Minshew has an ADP of 145.63 in redraft leagues, which puts him in the 13th to 19th round, depending on the size of the league. His ADP is behind teammate RB Dylan Laube (136.88).

Among quarterbacks, Minshew’s ADP puts him 33rd at the position, behind Derek Carr (New Orleans Saints, 136.81), Will Levis (Tennessee Titans, 137.43) and Bryce Young (Carolina Panthers, 143.56) and slightly ahead of Russell Wilson (Pittsburgh Steelers, 152.27), Jacoby Brissett (New England Patriots, 158.73) and Justin Fields (Pittsburgh Steelers), 160.57.

Where should you draft Minshew?

Minshew’s fantasy value isn’t much, but in some leagues, he does bring tremendous value.

In 2 of his 5 seasons in the league, Minshew finished as a top-26 QB. He finished as a top-21 fantasy QB in both seasons in which he topped 10 starts. Minshew might not get much publicity, but he is consistent.

Minshew has a 62.6% completion rate as well. The Raiders are expected to be among the worst teams in the NFL, but Minshew has stars like TE Brock Bowers and WR Davante Adams, both of which can make plays. Minshew has a starting spot locked up which is more than many QB1s can say.

Minshew has thrown for north of 3,200 yards when he’s started 10 or more games. He is consistent, and he can contribute to your team. Minshew might be a low-end QB2 in the fantasy ranks, but he’s worthy of being taken in 2-QB leagues. Minshew is also worth a look in superflex leagues and should taken higher than many of his similarly-ranked peers like Young and Wilson.

Draft Minshew in the 9th round and after in 2-QB or Superflex leagues and certainly ensure he’s off the board in those styles of leagues.

Vikings QB Sam Darnold ranked among the league’s worst starters

The Sporting News’ NFL analyst Vinnie Iyer ranks Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold as the third-worst starter in the league for 2024

Even before J.J. McCarthy injured his knee and was lost for the season, we knew that the Minnesota Vikings would head into the season with Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback. The question wasn’t if Darnold would start, it was how long he would remain the starter. It was assumed that it was only a matter of time before Darnold’s play would warrant a switch.

Now, that’s not an option, and Darnold has a firm hold on the starting job, and the Vikings are going to be in a world of hurt if Darnold gets hurt or struggles as he has through most of his career. That history of struggle has many pessimistic about Darnold’s future with the Vikings, and the Vikings’ chances this season.

Among those who are pessimistic is The Sporting News NFL analyst Vinnie Iyer. Iyer recently released his rankings of all the starting quarterbacks in the NFL, ranked 1-32, and Darnold’s placement on the list doesn’t instill confidence that Minnesota can win much in 2024.

The Vikings were able to stay in playoff contention for much of the 2023 season with a quarterback carousel after Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles, so it’s possible the talent on the roster — particularly on defense — can carry the team once again. But they’ll need to with Darnold ranking as the 30th starting quarterback in the league, according to Iyer.

That ranking puts Darnold ahead of just two starting quarterbacks: Las Vegas Raiders’ Gardner Minshew, who was a surprise choice over last year’s starter Aidan O’Connell, and New England Patriots first-round pick Drake Maye, who still hasn’t been officially named the starter over Jacoby Brissett.

That alone speaks volumes about how Iyer — and, to a certain extent, the general populace — sees Darnold as a starter. And that pessimism is warranted for the former third-overall selection. Darnold has famously struggled throughout his career, at one point becoming a meme for proclaiming he was “seeing ghosts out there.”

Still, the talent around Darnold is strong, with arguably the best wide receiver in the league, Justin Jefferson, to throw to. He also has one of the better left tackles in the league, Christian Darrisaw, to protect him. If ever there was a time for Darnold to succeed, it’s now. He’s never had a better supporting cast around him, save for his time in San Francisco — where he seldom saw the field behind Brock Purdy.

5 takeaways from Raiders 53-man roster

We have the Raiders initial 53-man roster. And with it there are some interesting observations. Let’s look into a few of those which stood out to me.

We have the Raiders initial 53-man roster. And with it there are some interesting observations. Let’s look into a few of those which stood out to me.

Some teams have opted to carry three quarterbacks on the roster. Others have gone with just two, essentially placing their third quarterback on the practice squad. The Raiders chose the latter. Most likely they will bring back either Carter Bradley or Nathan Peterman to be that third QB. But if another QB comes available they like, who knows.

Kristian Wilkerson seemed like a shoo-in to make the Raiders roster. But he and Jalen Guyton were both cut in favor of a couple young players who showed a lot of potential. Tyreik McAllister showed elite speed and kick return abilities while undrafted rookie Ramel Keyton showed great skills and length as a receiver. We will wait to see if they are both still on the roster after whomever the Raiders add off waivers, but they are here now over Wilkerson and Guyton, and that says a lot.

Nine offensive linemen are on the Raiders squad. Almost all of them play multiple positions. Cody Whitehair, Jackson Powers-Johnson, and Dyland Parham can all play both center and guard. Andrus Peat can play guard and tackle. And Thayer Munford and DJ Glaze can play either tackle spot in a pinch.

Seven linebackers is a lot. Like a LOT lot. Mainly because we aren’t in the age of a middle linebacker and two outside linebackers any more. In most cases there will be just two linebackers on the field at any given time. So, at most five linebackers is needed. My hunch is one or two of them will be headed for IR with designation to return and perhaps one waived with the hope for a return to the practice squad. If it’s IR, then Tommy Eichenberg and/or Amari Burney would be the likely candidates as both got banged up this preseason.

Did I mention there are SEVEN linebackers? That will not stay that way. See the above for how that could go down. There’s also five defensive tackles and six cornerbacks despite Antonio Pierce’s displeasure with the preseason performances by the depth at both positions.

The two DT’s who made it on the end of the roster are last year’s draft picks Byron Young and Nesta Jade Silvera. Likewise both rookie cornerbacks made it along with Brandon Facyson who can’t seem to get healthy, making for another candidate for temporary IR.

So, you can see several positions that could see moves made as the team welcomes a few waiver claims.

Raiders plan to enter season with 2 QBs on roster and adding one to practice squad

Raiders plan to enter season with 2 QBs on roster and adding one to practice squad

Tuesday was the cutdown deadline for NFL teams to bring their rosters from 90 players down to 53. On the Raiders roster, they kept just two quarterbacks, while cutting veteran Nathan Peterman and undrafted rookie Carter Bradley.

I asked Raiders GM Tom Telesco what his plan was for the position going into the season.

“Things could always change, but right now we’re looking at probably two on the active roster and one on the practice squad,” said Telesco.

That means, barring any major surprises among the cuts out there, the Raiders will stand pat with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell as their two active roster quarterbacks.

What they do with the practice squad spot is what we should find out by tomorrow. Obviously, the most likely would be bringing back either Bradley or Peterman, but should there be someone out there who they think could be an upgrade, there could be some consideration there.

The one issue with that would be the better quarterbacks out there are likely to be claimed off waivers, which means they would go on the active roster of whatever team claims them. So, if that’s not the Raiders’ plan, they would need to wait to see who clears waivers before adding them to the practice squad.

NFL coaches, execs don’t think too highly of Gardner Minshew as Raiders starting quarterback

Is Gardner Minshew a bottom tier starter? NFL coaches and execs think so.

Each year The Athletic polls a group of NFL coaches and executives to put each team’s starting quarterback into tiers.

These tiers are from 1-4 and among those tiers is a ranking from 1-30. As you might expect, Patrick Mahomes came in at the top. He was joined in tier one by Joe Burrow and Josh Allen.

From there you have to drop down a ways, well into the lowest tier (4) before you find Raiders starter Gardner Minshew.

Here is what a few anonymous coaches told The Athletic about their thoughts on Minshew.

“Nobody wants him to be a starter, probably even his own team, but he won games with Indy last year,” an offensive coach said. “When you play him, the kid is competitive. He will keep you in the game — and them. It’s going to be a fight.”

“Gardner Minshew is a real gutsy player,” a defensive coordinator said. “Everybody on the team is going to love him. He is going to extend plays with his legs. He’s smart. He will be able to function in the offense. But he’s just limited.”

What’s interesting is while Minshew got 31 votes for tier four, he also got 15 votes for tier 3. That’s significantly better than last year when he got just three votes for tier 3, 22 for tier 4, and 25 for tier 5. So, he did improve the opinions of a lot of coaches and execs in his 13 starts in Indianapolis last season.

Tier 4 is described as those quarterbacks who “could be an unproven player (not enough information for voters to classify) or a veteran who ideally would not start all 17 games.”

Minshew would fall in the latter of the two — the veteran who would ideally not start all 17 games. In fact, though he comes in at number 25, there are only two quarterbacks ranked lower who would also fit into that category — Sam Darnold (Vikings) and Jacoby Brissett (Patriots).

The difference there is the Vikings and Patriots both drafted quarterbacks in the top ten this year who they hoped would be taking over the starting job right away. The Raiders just have second year former fourth rounder Aidan O’Connell who just lost the starting job to Minshew.

So, ideal or not, the Raiders are pretty much stuck with what they’ve got at least until they get another shot at upgrading the position. Which appears to be next year.

Browns rumored to be shopping QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, should Raiders inquire?

Should Raiders be in the mix to trade for Browns QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson?

Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s football career was launched in Las Vegas. The Bishop Gorman grad attended UCLA and went on to be selected in the fifth round of the 2023 draft. And after stepping up for Deshaun Watson for thre games last season, he’s now buried on the depth chart behind Watson and Jameis Winston.

This has led reported trade attempts by the Browns as they hope to get something in return for a player who may not see the field for them.

Up until last week, the Raiders hoped Anthony Brown could compete for the backup job. But he never panned out and they released him in favor of journeyman Nathan Peterman.

Shortly after that, they decided on Gardner Minshew as the starter over Aidan O’Connell. A competition in which neither of them stepped up to claim the job, leaving the coaches to make a tough decision between basically the lesser of the evils.

It’s safe to say the Raiders have one of the least enviably quarterback situations in the league. And you have to ask yourself if adding someone like Thompson-Robinson to the mix would be valuable.

I think it would.

You’d have to think at very least he would be a better potential option than Peterman. And at best, he could be a more viable option to start than AOC should Minshew struggle early in the season.

What it could come down to is compensation. Which I wouldn’t imagine would be much, considering most teams would probably rather just wait to see if the Browns waive DTR and they can scoop him up for nothing. But any team willing to part with a late round pick or perhaps even just a late round pick swap, may just land him.

At this point, the Raiders are in no position to be turning their nose up at potential competition at a position which basically has two quality backup caliber guys and a third guy who is probably not worth a roster spot.

Busters for Raiders Preseason Week 2 vs Cowboys

We continue to the Busters for Raiders Preseason Week 2 vs Cowboys

After the Raiders jumped out to a fast start in the preseason opener in Minnesota, that didn’t happen against the Cowboys in Week two. Not much was working on offense and even the Cowboys backups were getting the better of Raiders starters on both sides of the ball.

Busters

QB Gardner Minshew

Antonio Pierce was hoping either Minshew or Aidan O’Connell would step up and claim the starting job. Neither of them did that and from the looks of things, Pierce had to look past his performance in this game in order to name hm the starter.

O’Connell threw a pick six in this game, but Minshew was lucky not to do the same on the first drive of the game. Twice, in fact.

The first drive, he missed an open Tre Tucker, opting to throw into coverage, having the pass broken up and threw a ball too high for Jakobi Meyers to get. Then on fourth and three, the linebacker stepped in front of his pass and would have had a clear path for a touchdown, but he dropped it.

A 48-yard connection with Tucker would get the Raiders in field goal range on their next drive, but another overthrow for Meyers would have them settle for a field goal.

Next drive, he waited too long to throw it and again nearly had it intercepted. It was only Michael Mayer turning defender that that pass was knocked down instead of picked.

Minshew’s final drive ended with him throwing it too high for Harrison Bryant on fourth and six.

G Dylan Parham

Just after the Raiders got to the 12-yard line on the 48-yard completion to Tre Tucker, Parham gave up a run stuff at the line. In the second quarter, he was slow to get into position on a screen, causing the ball to fall incomplete. On the final play of the third quarter, he was flagged for holding. Two plays later, O’Connell threw his pick six.

T Andrus Peat

Two plays following the 48-yard bomb, Peat gave up a pressure resulting in an incompletion. The drive would end on the next play. The next drive Peat would miss his block on a screen and it was blown up for a one yard gain.

T Thayer Munford

Peat was replaced at left tackle in the second quarter with Munford moving from the right to the left side. And on his second play at LT, Munford gave up a pressure, causing Misnhew to have to scramble for yards.

The final drive of the second quarter ended with Munford giving up another pressure, leading to an incompletion. After the Raiders finally got in the end zone in the third quarter, the two-point conversion fail in large part due to Munford giving up pressure on Minshew as he went back to pass.

DT Byron Young

It looked like the Cowboys game plan at one point was just simply to run at Young. He was getting pushed around a lot. On one drive in the second quarter, it seemed like every play. He was driven back on a seven-yard run, then gave up the first down on the next play, gave up a five-yard run two plays later, then later, with the Cowboys in first and goal at the four, he gave up a three-yard run. They scored the go ahead TD on the next play.

QB Carter Bradley

Bradley came in to start the fourth quarter. He was actually allowed to throw the ball this time. And he looked good at first, going six-for-six to start his day. Then the wheels fell off. His next two passes were an overthrown ball and a pass batted at the line. With a delay of game penalty in between.

His second and final drive featured two more batted passes and a ball behind his receiver on third and short.

CB MJ Devonshire

The final long drive for the Cowboys saw Devonshire give up a 17-yard catch, a 30-yard catch, and the third down catch that put the Cowboys in first and goal at the four.
