Kevin Durant supplants himself atop the basketball world, Nets take series lead

The Brooklyn Nets took a 3-2 series lead over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night thanks for a historic night from Kevin Durant.

Just a day ago, seemingly every basketball fan and analyst from media outlets were questioning  Kevin Durant’s greatness. Some even proclaimed that Durant had yet to have a signature game in his career that puts him in the conversation with players like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Michael Jordan.

With the Brooklyn Nets championship hopes fading due to injuries, Durant stepped up in a huge way to take the 3-2 series lead over Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night.

The Nets were without Kyrie Irving, who had hurt his ankle in game four, and they were essentially without James Harden who tried to push through his hamstring injury. Harden’s leg was wrapped like a Christmas present, and his shooting stroke was anywhere but in Brooklyn as he shot 1-of-10 scoring just five points.

Durant had everyone in the world’s attention with his performance on Tuesday where he scored 49 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists. After having a couple off games with the absences of Harden and Kyrie, that saw Durant shooting 37% from the field, Milwaukee’s P.J. Tucker was seemingly deemed the “Durant Stopper.”

The Bucks had no answer, and Giannis Antetokounmpo who many thought would surpass Durant and LeBron James as the best in the world, expressed himself after the game that Durant is the best player in the world right now.

Not only did Durant step up his scoring by shooting close to 70% from the field, he did everything the Nets needed in order to push them past the Bucks. This included breaking history as he became the first player to have at least 45 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in a playoff game. He also played the entire 48 minutes of the game for just the third time in his career.

Durant was unstoppable and he also received a great performance from Jeff Green who added 27 points off the bench after he hit seven threes.

It was a performance so amazing that all Nets head coach Steve Nash could do after the game was give Durant a huge hug.

Durant has often been the guy that was just born at the wrong time, because he and LeBron’s careers intersected at an inopportune time that saw LeBron in his prime.

With LeBron showing that he is actually human and slowing down, Durant’s performance last night might have just been the passing of the torch. Prior to last night’s game, there was yet to be a “Durant game,” but his 49 points and a huge win when his team was depleted by injuries is just a sign of Durant taking the title while chasing a title.

After game four, Durant and the Nets’ season was in jeopardy, and if the team does anything less than win it all they will be crucified. The Nets had lost what many considered to be a guaranteed spot in the NBA Finals and were showing signs of being exposed.

Now, the Nets have the upper hand in the series and Durant has the basketball world in his hands.

Washington Football Team announces Samuel Cosmi’s jersey number

The Washington Football Team has announced former Texas Longhorn offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi’s jersey number.

Former Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi was selected by the Washington Football Team in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Cosmi kept former teammate and new Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger upright for three seasons as the full-time starter at both left and right tackle. He was a two-time All-Big 12 honoree, earring second-team honors in 2019 and first-team honors in 2020.

The No. 52 has been passed down the Texas Longhorns lineage for great offensive lineman, most recently worn by Connor Williams of the Dallas Cowboys.

However, with the Washington Football Team’s first round selection of Jamin Davis choosing to wear No. 52, Cosmi decided to go with a higher number and will sport No. 62 throughout his rookie season in Washington.

With the offseason additions of Charles Leno and Ereck Flowers, it’s unclear if Cosmi will be an immediate starter, but his potential and the position he was drafted in was enough for Washington to take a chance on him as a present and future asset to the organization.

Former Texas LB Malik Jefferson signs with the Indianapolis Colts

Former Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson signed as a free agent with the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday.

The 2021 NFL draft concluded a few days ago and now teams are looking to fill remaining roster spots. After taking into account current players on the roster, draft picks and undrafted free agents, there are still several roster spots available for free agent veteran players.

Usually these spots are last-second roster fillers or camp bodies who are going to compete for a spot, but at the very least, will allow for better competition going into training camp as team’s can bring 90 players.

The Indianapolis Colts already added a pair of former Longhorns to their squad last weekend where they drafted quarterback Sam Ehlinger and signed wide receiver Tarik Black as an undrafted free agent.

The Colts added another one to the list on Wednesday. Former Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson signed with Indianapolis as a free agent.

Jefferson played at Texas from 2015-2017 where he was a two-time All-American and Butkus Award finalist before being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft.

He only played one season for the Bengals before he was waived and was eventually claimed by the Cleveland Browns in 2019, where he was again waived,

Soon after, Jefferson signed with the Los Angeles Charges on their practice squad. He didn’t make the Chargers active roster until early in the 2020 season.

After being placed on injured reserve, he was waived again this past March. Jefferson will look to reignite his NFL career in Indianapolis.

Report: Former Longhorns QB set to make first NFL start for the Dallas Cowboys

Current Dallas Cowboys quarterback and former Texas Longhorn passer Garrett Gilbert will make his first NFL start Sunday.

Garrett Gilbert didn’t have the greatest run as a quarterback at the University of Texas. He spent three seasons before moving to SMU following the 2011 season. During his time for the Longhorns Garrett threw for 13 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He also only complete 56.7% of his passes. He had a better two-year run with SMU than he did at Texas. Just never lived up to the expectations that were placed on him.

All that is now meaningless as he prepares for his first start in the NFL. He has bounced around since 2014. Gilbert now finds himself in the starting role due to an injury to Dak Prescott that ended his season. The backup Andy Dalton suffered a nasty concussion that cost him two games and then tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of this game. No pressure kid, you only are facing the last remaining undefeated team in the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I feel like it’s my job to go out there and perform and execute our game plan. And so, you know, what I bring to the table, I think that’s less important than just understanding what my job is and being the best quarterback I can be for this team. – Garrett Gilbert

Gilbert making his first NFL start for the Dallas Cowboys is a great story for the former five-star quarterback recruit. The interesting part is that he will make his first NFL start for the team that beat his father in his last NFL start. Gale Gilbert played in the NFL from 1985-1995. Against the Cowboys he completed 20/32 passes for 206 yards and three interceptions. He was sacked six times in that game. The Cowboys would go on to win the Super Bowl that year.

The final score in that game was 23-9 in favor of Dallas. Coincidentally enough that was the final score in last week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In the days following that outcome it was reported that Garrett could be the starter for the game after a poor performance by rookie Ben DiNucci.
