PHOTOS: Colorado opens 100th season at Folsom Field by beating Nebraska

Take a look back at the best images from Coach Prime’s home debut

For a number of reasons, Saturday was a special day in Colorado football history. Not only did the No. 22 Buffs beat rival Nebraska in head coach Deion Sanders’ home debut, but they also opened their 100th season at Folsom Field and secured a spot on ESPN’s “College GameDay” for next week.

Over 53,000 fans packed Folsom for the highly-anticipated matchup, marking the stadium’s highest attendance in 15 years. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was impressive once again as he connected with wide receiver Xavier Weaver for 170 yards and a touchdown.

Not even near-freezing temperatures and a blanket of snow could keep Buffs fans from packing Folsom Field on Saturday for Colorado’s first spring football game under head coach Deion Sanders.

A spring game program record of 47,277 strong filled the stands to watch Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter and several other new names face off in what was essentially a glorified scrimmage.

Highlights of the day included returning WR Montana Lemonious-Craig’s 98-yard touchdown reception, multiple explosive runs from incoming freshman Dylan Edwards and an honorary opening kick from 98-year-old super fan Peggy Coppom.

Although the Colorado Buffaloes ended things with another blowout loss, it was still great to be at Folsom Field for one final Saturday in 2022.

Still, No. 14 Utah, which miraculously finds itself headed to the Pac-12 Championship Game, put up 42 first-half points to make for an ultimately dissapointing end to CU’s 1-11 season. With JT Shrout banged up, backup quarterback Maddox Kopp got the start and was much better in the second half, albeit against the Utes’ backups.

The highlights on senior day remained few and were limited to the second half. Nikko Reed secured an interception that led to an Alex Fontenot touchdown, freshman back Anthony Hankerson found the end zone and in the game’s final minutes, big man Frank Fillip ended his career with a memorable 1-yard touchdown.

This outcome wasn’t very surprising.

The Oregon Ducks came to Folsom Field as a top-10 team and looked every bit like one of the best teams in the country. The Ducks won 49-10 as Colorado’s struggles continued and the dismal 2022 season got one step closer to an end.

Bo Nix was 20-of-24 for 274 yards and two scores through the air and another two on the ground. JT Shrout started again for the Buffs, going 17-of-34 for 247 yards with one score and two interceptions.

If there is a positive sign, it was the play of wide receiver Jordyn Tyson once again. Tyson led the way with five catches for a game-high 137 yards and a touchdown, and Mike Sanford and the Buffs have found a quality starter. Unfortunately, it was disclosed on Sunday that he suffered a season-ending lower-body injury.

That was a little bit more encouraging at least.

The Colorado Buffaloes hosted the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday and suffered a tough 42-34 loss at Folsom Field.

Xazavian Valladay continued his impressive season for Arizona State, as the running back totaled 118 yards and three scores on 23 carries. Deion Smith looked every bit like a capable starter, rushing for 111 yards on 24 carries and a score, and JT Shrout threw a pair of touchdown passes.

It was 35-17 Arizona State in the third quarter, but the Buffs were able to score 17 points late to make this more interesting.

Jordan Tyson had a magnificent game, catching five balls for 115 yards and a score, and he rattled off an 88-yard punt return touchdown.

There we go. For the first time all season, the Colorado Buffaloes got a victory on the football field.

Just weeks after dismissing Karl Dorrell after a brutal 0-5 start, Mike Sanford stepped in as interim head coach and got a win with an overtime victory against Cal, 20-13.

Owen McCown and JT Shrout played QB, Montana Lemonious-Craig exploded as the team’s top wide receiver, and the Buffs’ defense was spectacular against the Bears to get the win and send Folsom Field into celebration mode for the first time all year.

With Sanford being a potential long-term head coach option, this was a step in the right direction for him.

Moreover, it is terrific to finally get a win after a rough year for the Buffs. Let’s relive some of the best moments from the victory over the Bears.

It wasn’t a fun night for the Colorado Buffaloes in their opener against the TCU Horned Frogs. TCU won easily, 38-13, after a dominant second half.

Brendon Lewis got the start for Colorado, although some fans wanted JT Shrout to get more playing time. Head coach Karl Dorrell sure left everybody in attendance with more questions than answers, and a packed Folsom Field went home in disappointment to begin the season.

Although it wasn’t a memorable evening, here are some of the best photos from the 99th time Folsom Field has hosted a CU opener. Sit back and enjoy these pics, and then let’s move on to Air Force.

PHOTOS: Colorado’s rivalry with Nebraska through the years

PHOTOS: Looking back at Colorado’s rivalry with Nebraska

One of the most underrated rivalries in college football is likely between the Colorado Buffaloes and Nebraska Cornhuskers. The two squads have been battling it out on the gridiron since 1898, with the Big Red owning a 49-20-2 all-time series advantage.

Both programs were at their heights in the 1990s, providing several memorable games. And then in 2001, the score 62-36 was permanently implanted into the minds of Buffs fans.

Colorado currently owns a two-game win streak following a pair of unforgettable come-from-behind wins in 2018 and 2019.  While we’re in the midst of another short break, the rivalry will be renewed in 2023 at Folsom Field and in 2024 at Memorial Stadium.
