A photographic look at Colorado women’s basketball’s 2023-24 campaign

Relive Colorado women’s basketball’s stellar season

Led by head coach JR Payne and veteran point guard Jaylyn Sherrod, Colorado women’s basketball recently concluded another impressive season.

The Buffs began things by upsetting then-No. 1 LSU by 14 points on opening night, giving Colorado plenty of early national respect. Payne’s Buffs continued to play strong basketball but a late-season slide ultimately landed them fifth place in the Pac-12 standings.

After falling to Oregon State in the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals, Colorado beat both Drake and Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the Sweet 16 for the second straight year.

Relive Colorado’s emphatic NCAA Tournament victory at Kansas State

For the second straight season, head coach JR Payne and the Colorado Buffaloes are headed to the NCAA women’s basketball tournament Sweet 16.

The fifth-seeded Buffs punched their ticket to Albany by upsetting the fourth-seeded Kansas State Wildcats on their home court Sunday afternoon, 63-50.

Colorado backup point guard Tameiya Sadler played hero in front of a sold-out Bramlage Coliseum crowd, scoring 10 critical points in the second half. Fellow veteran Maddie Nolan also came up clutch early with three huge 3-pointers.

The Buffs will face either West Virginia or Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the Sweet 16 later this week.

Relive one of the most memorable games in CU basketball history

In an absolute offensive slugfest that ended with KJ Simpson playing hero, the No. 10 seed Colorado Buffaloes upset the No. 7 Florida Gators in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, 102-100.

Friday’s first-round matchup saw both teams shoot over 51% from the field, but no shot was bigger than Simpson’s go-ahead baseline jumper with under five seconds remaining in regulation. After receiving the inbound pass from Cody Williams, Simpson created just enough space to deliver the biggest shot of his college career.

The first-team All-Pac-12 point guard scored a team-high 23 points while Eddie Lampkin Jr. dominated the paint with 21 points.

Colorado’s next March Madness game will come Sunday against No. 2 seed Marquette in the round of 32.

Boyle’s CU Buffs punch ticket to final Pac-12 Tournament championship game

Colorado will be playing in the Pac-12 championship game

Twelve years after winning their first and only Pac-12 men’s basketball title in 2012, the Colorado Buffaloes will play in the historic conference’s final championship game.

Head coach Tad Boyle’s third-seeded Buffs punched their ticket to the Pac-12 Tournament title game by beating second-seeded Washington State in the semifinals late Friday night, 58-52. Colorado, now riding an impressive eight-game winning streak, is set to battle No. 4 seed Oregon on Saturday (7 p.m. MT on Fox) for the Pac-12 title.

Against the Cougars, Colorado’s defense stepped up late, holding WSU to only two points in the game’s final three minutes. KJ Simpson led the Buffs with 12 points, Tristan da Silva had 13 and J’Vonne Hadley gutted out 12.

If the Buffs weren’t already an NCAA Tournament lock after beating Utah in the Pac-12 quarterfinals, they should be now. Although beating the Ducks and securing an automatic bid would be the preferred route.

Looking back at Quay Miller’s three seasons at Colorado

Quay Miller has been a force for Colorado over the past three seasons

Back in April of 2021, the Colorado women’s basketball program received a massive boost via the transfer portal when former Washington Huskies Quay Miller and Tameiya Sadler committed to the Buffs.

With the NCAA Tournament coming up next for Colorado, the two veterans are hoping to extend their college careers as long as possible.

For Miller, her post presence will be key for the Buffs if they want to make another deep March Madness run. The durable forward from Renton, Washington is averaging 9.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this season.

PHOTOS: Jaylyn Sherrod’s stellar Colorado women’s basketball career

Jaylyn Sherrod has made the most out of her five seasons in Boulder

Jaylyn Sherrod has been at the heart of Colorado women’s basketball’s resurgence over the past few years.

During her freshman season in 2019-20, the Buffs won only 16 games and were near the bottom of the Pac-12 Conference. Now, Sherrod and the Buffs will soon compete in their third straight NCAA Tournament.

Sherrod, who started in her school-record 128th game on Saturday, is playing arguably the best basketball of her career this season. The fifth-year point guard from Alabama is averaging 12.8 points, 4.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game and has been featured on multiple late-season national player of the year award watch lists.

Take a look back at Colorado native Luke O’Brien’s college career

Luke O’Brien has represented his home state of Colorado well throughout his four years in a CU Buffs men’s basketball uniform.

A native of Littleton, O’Brien played his prep career at Columbine High School, where he was named the Class 5A State Player of the Year as a senior. He then played his first season with the Buffs in 2020-21 and saw action in 10 games, including both of Colorado’s NCAA Tournament games.

O’Brien’s college career is now coming to a close with his final regular season home game set for Sunday against Stanford. Entering Sunday, the versatile 6-foot-8 O’Brien is closing in on 500 career points and 400 rebounds throughout his time in Boulder.

It wasn’t a perfect performance, but the Colorado men’s basketball team played just well enough against Arizona State on Thursday evening to stay perfect at the CU Events Center this season.

Head coach Tad Boyle’s Buffs shot 47% from the field and received another big offensive game from J’Vonne Hadley while beating the Sun Devils, 82-70. Colorado is now 13-0 at home for the first time in program history with a huge game against No. 8 Arizona up next on Saturday night.

CU Buffs drop key Pac-12 road game at Utah

Once again, the Buffs didn’t get enough outside of KJ Simpson and J’Vonne Hadley

Outside of KJ Simpson and J’Vonne Hadley, not enough Buffs stepped up when needed on Saturday in a key Pac-12 road game at Utah.

With Luke O’Brien, Cody Williams and Bangot Dak all sidelined due to injury, Simpson and Hadley combined for 40 points, but the beaten-up Colorado men’s basketball team didn’t receive enough from others, ultimately falling 73-68.

Tristan da Silva suffered his worst shooting performance of the season (3-for-15 from the field) and Eddie Lampkin Jr. committed eight turnovers — three more than his previous season-high. Colorado’s bench, which was limited to Javon Ruffin and Assane Diop, also went scoreless.

Colorado made things interesting late, cutting Utah’s lead to three with under 30 seconds remaining, but couldn’t close the deal.

Heach coach Tad Boyle’s CU team is now 15-7 overall, 6-5 in the Pac-12 and 1-6 in true road games. With No. 34 Utah only three spots behind No. 31 Colorado in the NET Rankings, the Buffaloes could’ve used this win to boost their increasingly shaky NCAA Tournament resume.

In Colorado men’s basketball’s final Pac-12 trip to Beasley Coliseum, the Big 12-bound Buffaloes fell to Washington State, 78-69.

Colorado trailed for 37 minutes on Saturday and received little offensive production outside of KJ Simpson. While the Buffs made things interesting late in the second half, Myles Rice and Isaac Jones stepped up for the Cougars when needed.

Simpson led the Buffs with 25 points and Tristan da Silva had 16, but Colorado shot only 38.6% from the field. Washington State, meanwhile, made just over 45% of its shots.
