Georgia-Florida rivalry history: Dawgs hold edge

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and unranked Florida Gators are meeting for the 101st time in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and unranked Florida Gators are ready for another chapter in their historic rivalry. Florida is looking to spoil Georgia’s undefeated start to the 2022 college football season.

The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is one of the best rivalries in college football. Anything can happen, but more often than not the winner ends up making the SEC Championship Game. Georgia or Florida has represented the SEC East in the past seven SEC championship games.

Let’s take a look at the history between Georgia and Florida before the No. 101 meeting between the two rivals.

Georgia Bulldogs star WR George Pickens out versus Florida

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver George Pickens did not travel with the team to Jacksonville and will miss the game against the Florida Gators

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver George Pickens did not travel with the team to Jacksonville and will miss the crucial game against the Florida Gators. Pickens, a former five-star recruit, has 13 receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns on the season. He missed last week’s game against the Kentucky Wildcats with an upper body injury.

Stetson Bennett will have to step up without his top receiving target. The Georgia Bulldogs passing game will sorely miss Pickens, who is the Bulldogs’ top deep threat. In his place, Georgia has recently activated speedy four-star freshman wide receiver Arian Smith, who missed the opening portion of the season with wrist surgery.

Interestingly, without George Pickens, Georgia elected to run the ball 43 times against Kentucky. Stetson Bennett only attempted 14 passes in Georgia’s win over the Wildcats.

Viewers should expect the Bulldog offense to open up against Florida after having a relatively vanilla game plan for the Kentucky game. Kirby Smart and Todd Monken know that the Dawgs must keep pace with Kyle Trask, Kyle Pitts, and the explosive Florida offense.

Georgia must put up more than 14 points against the Gators if they expect to win. Florida will receive a heavy dose of Zamir White, James Cook, and the Georgia rushing attack, which will try to impose its will on the Gators. The Bulldogs will look to limit their turnovers and hope their banged up, but very deep defense can prevail. It should be another run-heavy day for the Dawgs, but not as run-heavy as the Kentucky game.
