Sooners move up one spot to No. 12 in latest AP Poll

Oklahoma rises to 12 in the newest AP Poll after defeating TCU on Friday.

With the regular season ending on Saturday, the College Football Playoff picture is clearing up. And the 82 teams set to play in a bowl have been solidified.

For Oklahoma, Saturday was a tease. Sooner fans sat and watched as BYU blew a 24-6 lead to the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a game that, had the Cougars won, would’ve sent the Sooners to the Big 12 title game.

The Cowboys came back and won in double overtime, punching their ticket to the Big 12 Championship game, where they will take on Texas.

The Sooners now focus on figuring out what bowl game they will play in. If the latest AP Top 25 indicates anything, they still have an outside shot at playing in a New Year’s Six Bowl game.

The Oklahoma Sooners come in at No. 12 in the latest AP Poll. The Sooners moved up a spot following Louisville’s loss to Kentucky. As we head into conference championship game weekend, here is how things shake.

At No. 1 remains Georgia, who comfortably dispatched Georgia Tech over the holiday weekend.

Michigan is No. 2 after they pulled off their third straight win over rival Ohio State in a defacto playoff game that eliminated the Buckeyes from CFP contention. Washington, Florida State, and Oregon moved up and round out the top five.

Washington escaped near disaster as they pulled off a win in the Apple Cup against in-state rival Washington State. This sets up another defacto playoff game between Oregon and Washington. The winner of the Pac-12 title will earn a spot in the CFP.

Ohio State sits at six, while Texas, Alabama, and Missouri remain at seven, eight, and nine, respectively. Penn State replaces Louisville at No. 10, while Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels sit above Oklahoma at No. 11.

LSU and Arizona are the two teams behind the Sooners as Louisville slips to No. 15 ahead of their ACC title game against Florida State next Saturday.

Oklahoma State moved up two spots to No. 19 despite fighting for their Big 12 lives against BYU. One of Oklahoma’s nonconference opponents from earlier this year, SMU, came in at No. 25 in the AP Poll.

Oklahoma’s defeat of TCU secured another 10-win season and marked the 59th time they were undefeated at home. The Sooners saw a net gain of 8 spots from their ranking in the preseason AP Top 25. A win would likely guarantee they finish inside the top 10 for the first time since 2020.

Watch Florida’s Jamari Lyons get ejected after spitting at FSU player

Defensive lineman Jamari Lyon spat on FSU offensive lineman Keiondre Jones, earning himself an ejection.

The game between the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles saw tensions run high as the two rivals ground out their differences on the college football gridiron on Saturday night in the Swamp.

Among the many moments that saw emotions overwhelm the young men on the field was a little more than three minutes remaining in the first half with the Orange and Blue up 12-0. Defensive lineman [autotag]Jamari Lyons[/autotag] started jawing with FSU offensive lineman Keiondre Jones after a 16-yard first-down run by running back Trey Benson.

On the replay of the scuffle, a spray of spit can be seen coming out of Lyons’ helmet toward Jones. He was disqualified from the game as a result of the infraction.

Lyons’ stint in the matchup against FSU marked his 11th appearance for the Gators this season. He notched 20 tackles through the first 10 games, including 10 solo tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. This season marks Lyons’ first full season after redshirting while he rehabilitated a torn ligament from his senior year of high school.

For the time being, that is the end of Florida football for the Gator Nation until the Orange and Blue game. That intrasquad exhibition will take place inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium sometime this coming spring with a date and time yet to be announced.

Good, Bad and Ugly: Gators Wire staff weighs in on UF-FSU game

Here’s how the Gators Wire staff if feeling on the morning after the final game of the 2023 season.

Well Gator fans, the end of the 2023 college football season is over for us. While the season had some high moments, it unfortunately had too many low ones as well, including Saturday night’s loss in the Swamp to the Florida State Seminoles, 24-15.

Much like the season itself, the game was a rollercoaster of emotions with Florida coming out strong on its first two drives while the defense was absolutely in shut-down mode. Then… well, that thing that Billy Napier’s program tends to do happened: mental errors and emotional mistakes doomed the Gators once again.

Following the loss, the Gators Wire crew assembled to give their final takes of the season in the Good, Bad and Ugly format. Predictably, our gripes had a bit of overlap but there was plenty of negativity to go around. Take a look for yourself at what we had to say below.

Sunday Hash: Where does Florida football go after FSU loss?

Pat Dooley breaks down what went wrong with the team against FSU and the season as a whole, and where the Gators can go from here.

Is it just me, or does it always seem like it’s raining and gloomy on Sundays after Florida losses?

The way these last two years have gone, we might want to call that Noah guy and see if he’s still building boats.

Florida lost for the 21st time in three years on Saturday night.

It’s only the second time in school history that UF has lost 21 games over a three-year span (one of those teams went 0-10-1) and the first time EVER that the Gators have lost at least seven games in three straight seasons.

Sad. Just sad.

The final Sunday Hash of the football season examines another loss while humming that song from Garbage “I’m Only Happy When It Rains.” Not.

Social media reactions to Florida’s final defeat of season vs. FSU

Here’s how the Gator Nation is reacting after Florida’s heart-breaking final loss of the season to FSU.

A somber Sunday morning followed Florida football’s devastating defeat in the Swamp at the hands of their biggest in-state rivals, the Florida State Seminoles.

Despite a strong first half that gave them a five-point lead heading into halftime, the Gators struggled in the final 30 minutes, falling 24-15. It was a rollercoaster affair throughout with the two teams sluggishly grinding against each other behind their backup quarterbacks, with plenty of emotions and penalties throughout.

Unfortunately, the performance was once again rife with mental errors and attitude issues that doomed Billy Napier and Co. once again. If you are keeping count out there, that is at least three games the Gators have gift-wrapped for their opponents — twice on their home field!

As one might expect, the Gators Nation was not pleased with Saturday night’s outcome, but at the same time, there is a general sense of dejection that the fanbase has habituated to. Nonetheless, the reactions on social media have been a fair mix of reactionary and patience as the Orange and Blue navigates through some of its darkest times.

With that in mind, take a look below at Twitter reactions from the morning after Florida’s Week 13 loss to Florida State in Gainesville.

Everything Gators LB Teradja Mitchell said after FSU loss

Here’s what Teradja Mitchell had to say about the final game of the 2023 campaign for the Gators.

The Florida State Seminoles were too much for the Florida Gators in Week 13 of the college football season, sending the Orange and Blue to its third-straight losing season with a 24-15 win in the Swamp. The loss ends Billy Napier and Co.’s 2023 campaign with a 5-7 record and no hopes for a bowl game.

Conversely, the win cemented FSU’s perfect 12-0 regular-season record, and while it was an ugly victory, Noles fans hope it will be enough to put their beloved Garnet and Gold in the College Football Playoffs. However, there is still the ACC Championship Game awaiting them next weekend as well.

Following the final loss, linebacker [autotag]Teradja Mitchell[/autotag] spoke with the media about the game, the season and what he sees ahead. While the results were not what the Gator Nation had hoped for, perhaps it was something for the program to build on.

Take a look below at an abridged question and answer with Mitchell from Saturday night’s media scrum.

Billy Napier addresses media following Florida State loss in Week 13

Here’s what Billy Napier had to say about the final game of the 2023 campaign for the Gators.

Florida football suffered its final loss of the 2023 regular on Saturday night, falling to their biggest in-state rivals, the Florida State Seminoles, 24-15, in yet another game that the Gators seized defeat from the jaws of victory.

The loss killed any chance of playing in a bowl game while giving the program to its third-straight losing season — something that has not happened in almost 80 years. On the flip side, the win for the ‘Noles kept their perfect season intact heading into the ACC Championship Game next weekend.

Following the final loss, head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] spoke with the media about the game, the season and what he sees ahead. While the results were not what the Gator Nation had hoped for, perhaps it was something to build on.

Take a look below at an abridged question and answer with Napier from Saturday night’s media scrum.

Five takeaways from Florida’s season-ending loss to Florida State

Florida had a chance to take down rival Florida State on Saturday, but the Gators came up short thanks to some costly penalties and missed kicks.

Florida had multiple chances to win the regular season finale against Florida State on Saturday, but the Gators shot themselves in the foot every time they had a chance to bury the Seminoles.

There is little doubt that injuries impacted this game, but it was penalty troubles that kept Florida from getting a chance to win it at the end of the game.

Max Brown looked good early but failed to impress after the first quarter. Ricky Pearsall fell short of 1,000 yards despite entering the game just 52 yards away from the goal. Florida hasn’t had a 1,000-yard receiver in two decades (and counting).

Year 2 of Florida football under Billy Napier is now in the books, and the team has taken a step back from the 6-7 finish it saw over each of the last two seasons.

Here’s what we learned about the team in Saturday’s loss.

Pat Dooley’s Six Pack: Instant reactions to Florida’s loss against FSU

Pat Dooley gives his quick takes from Florida’s ugly loss to Florida State to end the 2023 campaign.

For a half, Gator fans thought they could pull it off. But in the end, it was a new way to lose.

Florida lost its fifth straight game and second in a row to Florida State because the Gators could not generate any offense in the second half.

It was the first time this season Florida lost a game with a halftime lead. FSU won 24-15 with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker, who had to leave the game for a couple of plays because of targeting on Jaydon Hill.

Florida finished the season 5-7 while FSU kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive. Not a good night in the Swamp. The Dooley Six Pack looks at the game.

Florida will be without starting LT against Florida State

After being listed as questionable earlier in the week, Florida left tackle Austin Barber will officially miss the Florida State game.

Although he was listed as questionable heading into Saturday, Florida starting left tackle Austin Barber will be unavailable during the regular season finale against Florida State, according to Jacob Rudner of Swamp247.

Last week, Billy Napier moved right tackle Damieon George Jr. over to the left side, but Kamryn Waites could also end up getting reps at left tackle after seeing snaps against Missouri.

Losing Barber is significant for Florida, but the offensive line hasn’t been at 100 percent all year. That’s not to say the team should be used to it, but this is not a new kind of adversity for the team to overcome.

The Gators are also missing starting quarterback Graham Mertz, who is recovering from a fractured collarbone suffered last week. A betting man might put all his money on Florida to run the ball often tonight. There’s really no other option.

Wide receiver Andy Jean also missed warmups and is not expected to participate in the game, according to All Gators.
