FIU vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

The offense continues to be fun.

It’s not consistent, and it doesn’t move the chains well enough, but there’s a passing game Middle Tennessee has to worry about. The Golden Panthers have thrown for 260 yards or more in five of the last six games, and they’re about to push for 300 yards because they’ll have to.

They bomb deep – they’re averaging close to 17 yards per throw – and Middle Tennessee doesn’t have the pop with a new quarterback after losing Chase Cunningham a few weeks ago.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Just win the turnover battle.

The Blue Raiders couldn’t force enough mistakes to matter against WKU in a 48-21 loss, and it was the opposite. They lead the nation with 25 takeaways, but they didn’t come up with any last week and they turned it over seven times.
Fortunately, they’re going against a defense that never, ever takes the ball away – FIU has only come up with six takeaways.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Can this be when FIU finally gets its first win over an FBS team?

Middle Tennessee has turned the ball over 11 times in the last two games, but the D was able to make up for it in the win over Southern Miss. In this, run, run, run, don’t take any deep shots, and assume the pass defense will come up with enough takeaways to matter.

Old Dominion vs FIU Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are overcoming issues with enough takeaways to get by.

The defense has been good enough to keep the team in games – there was close loss after close loss before finally getting over the hump with a win over Louisiana Tech.

The run defense has been outstanding, and it should be able to stuff FIU to a dead stop. The Golden Panther offense has failed to hit 300 yards in each of the last two games as the season keeps getting worse.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why FIU Will Win

FIU has to overcome its problems with lots and lots of takeaways.

Old Dominion has turned the ball over two or more times in five straight games and has yet to win the turnover margin. There’s a whole lot going right as the team is starting to play better, but it all goes away if it makes a slew of mistakes.

FIU doesn’t generate turnovers with just four takeaways, but the defense can get behind the line and there are just enough stops against the mediocre attacks to potentially be okay.

The passing game will push the ball down the field, Old Dominion has no downfield attack, and the hope has to be for the O to be more explosive.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can Old Dominion make it two in a row? It’s playing a team its own size without the defensive toughness to hold up. More importantly in this, FIU doesn’t take the ball away enough to matter.

It’ll be close, it’ll be entertaining, and it’ll come down to Old Dominion being better than third downs and in the final moments.

FIU vs Marshall Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

The passing game continues to be fun.

The wins aren’t there, and the defense is letting the team down, but the Golden Panthers have the ability to keep up and bomb away against just about anyone with one of the best downfield passing attacks in college football.

FIU will throw for over 300 yards, and then it comes down to whether or not Marshall goes Marshall and turns the ball over enough to matter. The Thundering Herd have given it up multiple times in every game but one with ten giveaways over the last three games. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Marshall Will Win

This FIU team just doesn’t do a thing on defense.

It might throw for a ton of yards, but it gives them up just as fast, allowing 382 passing yards or more in four of the last five games.

It’s the second-worst pass defense in the country, there’s no ball control with the O struggling in the time of possession battle, and when it comes to those pesky Thundering Herd giveaways, the FIU D has only come up with four turnovers.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall has to do everything possible to not turn the ball over four times. It can get away with its normal two, but the only way FIU pulls this off is if there’s a total meltdown like the Herd’s loss to Middle Tennessee.

Expect over 600 passing yards between the two teams and a lot of offensive fun, but Marshall will come up with a few stops, and FIU won’t.

WKU vs FIU Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

The passing game will be amazing.

QB Bailey Zappe and the Hilltoppers attack won’t have any problem ripping through a shockingly awful FIU secondary that allowed an average of over 400 yards per game over a three-game stretch before allowing 199 yards against Charlotte.

Third in the nation in total offense, the Hilltoppers are exploding or over 500 yards on a consistent basis, and they should let it rip without any worry against a D that’s dead last in the nation in turnovers forced.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why FIU Will Win

FIU can wing it around, too.

There might not be a whole lot of success overall, but former Maryland QB Max Bortenschlager has been fantastic with 14 touchdown passes – two or more in every game – five picks, and he’s coming off a 466-yard day against Charlotte.

WKU has several outstanding parts on defense, but it’s having a tough time holding up. It’s allowing close to 500 yards per game with a secondary that’s allowing 327 yards or more in each of the last four games.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is going to be fun.

Both teams are going to throw and throw some more, but WKU does it better.  The pass rush, though, hasn’t shown up this season like it was supposed to, but it will this week against a Golden Panther O line that’s having problems.

The Hilltoppers lines will be stronger.

FIU Golden Panthers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Let’s just say the offense took a step back. The Golden Panthers averaged a horrendous 281 yards and 22 points per game with a woefully inefficient passing game and not enough of a ground attack to make up for it. Any improvement starts with something happening through the air – FIU failed to hit 200 yards in any of the five games and was under 90 in two.

Consider the quarterback race wide open. The FIU quarterbacks combined to average just 4.7 yards per attempt hitting just 45% of their throws. Stone Norton took off for Southern Illinois, Kaylen Wiggins is still an option, and former Maryland transfer Max Bortenschlager has the experience. After that it’s up to a few untested freshmen – at the moment, no other options are coming aboard.

The receiving corps has experience but now needs to help out the quarterbacks – and vice versa. Five of the top six receivers are back, and getting back 2019 leading target Shemar Thornton after missing last year is huge.

Junior Bryce Singleton led the way for the wideouts in 2020 with 14 catches for 150 yards, TE Rivaldo Fairweather is a 6-5, 245-pound second-year freshman who looks the part – he led the team with 165 yards on his ten catches; with almost all of it against Florida Atlantic – and there are plenty of options ready to do more.

The line was abysmal in pass protection, but it was solid for the ground game and should be a bit better even with two starters gone. The transfer portal is active with three backups leaving, but landing a few new guys will help starting with Api Mane from Kansas for the inside.

The backs are there if the line can just give everyone time. Leading rusher D’vonte Price is a big 6-2, 215-pound veteran who averaged close to seven yards per carry, Shaun Peterson is an even bigger 6-3, 215-pound back who averaged six yards per run, and there’s plenty of help in the mix.

FIU Golden Panthers Football Schedule Analysis: After a winless 2020, the Golden Panthers will get that out of the way immediately against Long Island and should be 2-0 with Texas State to follow.

Three straight road games – if you can count the trip up the road to Boca Raton a to face FAU a road date – won’t be great, but that’s it for the back-to-back away games.

There’s no UAB or Louisiana Tech from the West, but having to go to Marshall, Middle Tennessee and FAU will make it tough in the East.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: FIU Golden Panthers Offense 3 Things To Know

The offense took a step back from a strong 2018, only averaging 377 yards while failing to hit 28 points seven times – it only failed to get there four times in 2018.

And now it has to go on with QB James Morgan off being a New York Jet.

Morgan had a big arm and was able to push the ball deep, but he only hit 58% of his chances. Junior Kaylan Wiggins was the main backup, and he got in a little work. He’s going to get the longest first look, and unlike Morgan, he can run.

If Wiggins gets the gig, expect over 500 yards on the ground from the position. Miami native Caleb Lynum and former decent recruit Stone Norton are good prospects who’ll push for the job.

CFN in 60 Video: CFN All-SEC Team
[jwplayer 7xnZqosx]

The offensive line was one of the best in the nation in pass protection, and it led Conference USA in sacks allowed. Three starters are back with excellent size across the board, starting with 6-5, 320-pound D’Antne Demery returning at left tackle. However, losing tackle Devontay Taylor to Florida State stings.

There’s enough in place to be okay again, though, and it should be decent for a running game that has to find some more options. The top two backs are gone, and Wiggins was third on the team with 323 yards.

Senior D’Vonte Price got in a little work with 249 yards on 50 carries, but Arkansas speedster Maleek Williams should be an instant star, and 6-3, 215-pound Shaun Peterson will bring a little pop.

The receiving corps needs some work. Senior Shemar Thornton is back after leading the team with 51 catches for 668 yards and five scores, but just about everyone else is gone. TE Sterling Palmer returns coming off a 22-catch season, but in all, five of the top seven pass catchers are gone.

On the way is Georgia transfer JJ Holloman, Bryce Singleton is back after missing last year hurt, and a few possibilities come in from the recruiting class, but it’s going to be a work in progress.

Saints to meet with small-school quarterback prospect before 2020 draft

The New Orleans Saints are one of a few teams set to meet with Florida International’s James Morgan, a rising prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft

[jwplayer cQAtbjPg-ThvAeFxT]

All three quarterbacks who played for the New Orleans Saints last year are on track to test free agency, but it’s a safe bet that two of them will return. Team executives have made a contract extension with Drew Brees an offseason priority, while Taysom Hill can be retained on a restricted free agent tender. But that still leaves the door open for another passer to join them, especially if the plan is for Hill to remain heavily involved on special teams and in the receiver rotation.

One name to keep an eye on might be James Morgan, a draft prospect out of Florida International. Morgan has been on the rise after he turned in a solid week of practices at the East-West Shrine Bowl, which he followed up with by interviewing well at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson reported that the Saints are one of three teams planning to touch base with Morgan in the weeks ahead, along with the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders.

However, Wilson did not include the Saints in the list of teams most interested in Morgan’s NFL potential. That may be due to their lack of familiarity with Morgan as his actual prospects of success, with NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein characterizing him as a “tough guy with a big arm” who lacks some nuance to his game, struggling to throw with consistent accuracy. Morgan figures to be picked on the third day of the draft in rounds four through seven, if at all.

But who is he? Morgan grew up near the Green Bay Packers, and was a self-professed Brett Favre fan. He played 42 games in four years as a starter (initially at Bowling Green before transferring to Florida International as a junior), peaking in 2018 with a 65.3 completion percentage with 26 touchdowns thrown against 7 interceptions.

The Saints have kept developmental passers like Morgan around before. J.T. Barrett bounced on and off of the practice squad maybe a hundred times before the Pittsburgh Steelers gave him an opportunity, a role which Tulane legend Ryan Griffin once played. While they whiffed on picking Garrett Grayson as a third-round pick, he’s also worth mentioning in the rundown of past Saints backups. We shouldn’t be shocked if Morgan joins them.
