The NBA should copy Greece’s awesome outdoor basketball tournament idea

As we approach the start of the upcoming NBA season, we are starting to see more basketball played around the world and some of it rocks.

As we approach the start of the upcoming NBA season, we are starting to see more basketball played around the world and some of it rocks.

While it is not often that exhibition basketball games played in Greece capture such international intrigue, the Pavlos Giannakopoulos tournament was able to do exactly that.

With potentially over 42,000 fans reportedly in attendance at the Panathenaic Stadium (also known as Kallimarmaro Stadium) in Athens, they shattered a EuroLeague attendance record.

It was an iconic, unique atmosphere at the open air stadium that also played host to the first-ever Olympics of the modern era. The tournament featured a few prominent EuroLeague teams including Anadolu Efes, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv, KK Partizan, and Panathinaikos. The vibes were otherworldly.

Even before the competition, it looked incredibly fun for fans.

But once the matches began, it was simply unparalleled. Look how cool this looked.

Several of the teams had memorable former NBA players on its roster.

But imagine how exciting this would feel with the best players in the world competing in this type of environment.

We already have the NHL Winter Classic for hockey and the NBA should try something similar. They can even get a title sponsor and use this as a fun way to make more money for the sport in an exciting fashion like this.

Ranking: The best players to never play in the NBA

HoopsHype presents the best basketball players in history that never played a single minute in the NBA.

Last week, we released the HoopsHype78 list, our ranking of the 78 greatest NBA players of all time, which was met with the usual applause and scorn that any ranking of this nature does, especially after we chose four-time league MVP LeBron James the No. 1 player of all time.

Now, we will focus on another ranking, this time one of the best basketball players of all time to never play in the NBA.

For this exercise, we’re taking into account professional performance outside of the NBA, featuring proven players with successful careers at top pro levels (excluding the NBA itself). This means streetball legends like Pee Wee Kirkland or players who sadly passed away before getting a chance to shine in the league like Len Bias don’t crack this list.

As a result, this ranking will be heavy on ABA and European legends.

Check out our ranking below of the best basketball players to never play in the NBA.

This year’s international player riding a wave of hype as we near the NBA Draft is Nikola Djurisic, who plays for Mega Basket, a Serbian powerhouse that has produced several NBA players. Born into an athletic family, his father is former pro footballer Duško Djurisic, and his mother is former Olympian and pro volleyball player Vesna Čitaković.

Djurisic is a 6-foot-8 swingman who can handle the rock and effectively run the pick-and-roll as both a passer and a scorer from all three levels. Throughout the pre-draft process, Djurisic has showcased his playmaking abilities as a passer and scorer, while demonstrating he has more than enough athleticism to keep up with NBA-level prospects.

Djurisic sat down with HoopsHype, on behalf of adidas Eurocamp, to discuss his journey so far, how this year’s pre-draft compares to last, his GOAT, and more.
