Stashed Boston Celtics guard Yam Madar gets 14 points, 3 assists vs. Netherlands w/ Israel

Madar helped the Israeli National Team defeat the Netherlands National Team 74-67 in EuroBasket play

Stashed Boston Celtics point guard Yam Madar helped the Israeli National Team defeat the Netherlands National Team 74-67 in EuroBasket play on Saturday afternoon. The Beit Dagan native put up a total of 14 points, 3 rebounds, as many assists, and a steal in just under 24 minutes of floor time.

The former No. 47 pick of the 2020 NBA draft for Boston turned the ball over 3 times, and picked up 2 personal fouls in the win, shooting a very solid 5-of-10 from the field, an equally-hot 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, and a much less impressive 4-of-8 from the free throw line to complete his production in the Group D game.

Madar elected to skip the 2022 Las Vegas Summer League to focus on getting ready for a season where he will be featured by Partizan NIS and the Israeli National Team’s participation in this year’s EuroBasket competition.

While it’s too soon to say how things will go with Madar’s Serbian league squad at present, the Israeli floor general looked good against the Netherlands, even hitting a dagger from mid-court at one point.

Ex-Celtics forward Juancho Hernangomez gets 9 points, 7 boards vs. Georgia for Spain in EuroBasket play

Bo Cruz had things under control for Spain on Saturday.

Bo Cruz had things under control in the Spanish National Team’s 90-64 drubbing of the Georgian National Team in EuroBasket play on Saturday, Juancho Hernangomez — the star of the Netflix “Hustle” film in which the Spaniard plays Cruz — helping drive Spain to the win over Georgia.

The former Boston Celtics forward put up 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists in 21 minutes of play off of the bench, fouling just once with no turnovers in the game. Hernangomez shot 4-of-9 from the field overall, but went just 1-of-5 from beyond the arc and did not get to the free throw line.

The Madrid native last played for the Celtics in the 2021-22 NBA season, having been traded away to the San Antonio Spurs as part of a three-team deal bringing back Bol Bol and PJ Dozier from the Denver Nuggets near the 2022 NBA trade deadline.

Trio of Boston Celtics alumni push France to 77-73 win over Lithuania in Eurobasket play

Evan Fournier, Guerschon Yabusele, and Vincent Poirier all played a role in France’s win over Lithuania Saturday.

Three former Boston Celtics alumni played an instrumental role in the French National Team’s 77-73 victory over the Lithuanian National Team in EuroBasket play on Saturday. At the top of the list, former Celtics shooting guard Evan Fournier led all scorers with 27 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in 32:51 minutes of floor time.

Boston big man alum Guerschon Yabusele also had a solid game Saturday, adding another 9 points, 5 boards, and an assist in 23:34 minutes of play. Fellow Celtics frontcourt alum Vincent “Sexpants” Poirier chipped in another 6 points, 4 rebounds, an assist, and as many blocks in the win.

“When you play Lithuania,” said Fournier after the game, “you have to get ready for a battle because they are extremely physical.”

“They have the best fans in Europe, they always show up for big games, high-intensity games. So you have to get ready mentally for that.”

Boston alum Dennis Schroder gets 18 points, 9 assists for Germany vs. Bosnia

Fellow Celtics alumnus Daniel Theis had an off game by comparison, scoring 2 points and 6 boards in the 92-82 win for Germany.

Boston Celtics alumnus Dennis Schroder helped carry the German National Team to a 92-82 win over the Bosnian and Herzegovinian National Team on Saturday while fellow Boston alum Daniel Theis had a bit of an off game in the EuroBasket victory.

While Theis only managed to chip in 2 points on 1-of-5 shooting overall and going 0-of-2 from beyond the arc, he was able to chip in 6 rebounds and 2 assists in 22:35 minutes of floor time. Schroder also had an off game shooting as well, putting up 18 points on 35.3% shooting for the contest along with 3 boards, 9 assists, and a steal to help secure the win.

Both Theis and Schroder both last played for the Celtics in the 2021-22 NBA season but never played together for Boston given they were dealt as part of a package for one another at the 2022 NBA trade deadline.

Celtics alum Shane Larkin gets 13 points, 9 assists for Turkey in 101-87 EuroBasket win over Bulgaria

EuroLeague star and Celtics alum Shane Larkin continues to shine abroad.

Former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin helped lift his Turkish National Team to a 101-87 win over the Bulgarian National Team on Saturday in another solid victory for Turkey in Group A of EuroBasket play despite a slow start in the first half.

The Miami product put up 13 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists, and a steal in 28:35 minutes of floor time, turning the ball over just once, and committing two personal fouls. The Celtics alumnus had a bit of a rough night shooting the ball, going just 2-of-8 from the field overall, 1-of-6 from 3-point range, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe to help make up for his yips from elsewhere on the court.

“I didn’t shoot the ball well tonight,” said Larkin in an interview with Eurohoops after the game. “So, I just tried to start attacking more in the second half.”

Celtics alum Dennis Schroder points to Germany’s chemistry for early EuroBasket success

‘I think everybody is happy for each other. It doesn’t matter who scores the basket, everybody is happy and that’s the way to go,’ said the former Boston guard.

Led by Boston Celtics alumni Daniel Theis and Dennis Schroder, the German National Team is off to a great start in 2022 EuroBasket play with an unexpected win over the French National Team in their first game of the European Basketball Championship series, as the quadrennial competition for basketball hegemony is called on that continent.

Schroder spoke with the press soon after Germany’s auspicious start to the competition with their win over the 2020 Tokyo Olympic silver medalists, relating how he believed that the German National Team was getting synergistic production from a newfound degree of chemistry previously absent from previous iterations of the team.

“I think our team chemistry is amazing,” Schroder said in an interview with Eurohoops TV. “I think we just have to keep leading.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo just pulled off one of the most amazing game-sealing blocks you’ll ever see…again

Giannis Antetkounmpo is just unreal

There’s just not a basketball court Giannis Antetokounmpo can step on right now where he’s not absolutely and unequivocally the best athlete on it.

This dude is unreal. We’ve seen it so many times before, whether it was his impossible block on Deandre Ayton in the 2020 NBA Finals or his self-oop against the Celtics in last year’s playoffs or literally anything else this dude has done. He just casually does things no one should be able to do.

He did it again on Friday during Greece’s Eurobasket matchup against Croatia.

With Greece up 86-82 in the waning seconds of the game, the ball was kicked out to the corner in transition for what looked like an easy 3-pointer.

Then, all of a sudden, this 6’11 figure comes from underneath the basket on the other side of the court to get a fingertip on the shot. Look at this, man.

Y’all. This is ridiculous. It’s lunacy. This should not be something that is able to happen. Giannis should not be able to do these things.

He started from right here.

He blocked the shot right here.

How is that real? It’s just wild. Fans were rightfully in awe of this. The athleticism here is ridiculous.

There are not many teams in Eurobasket that can build some semblance of the wall required to slow down Giannis Antetokounmpo.
But with Ivica Zubac at the tip of the spear and Dario Saric, Bojan Bogdanovic and Mario Hezonja behind it, Croatia has built a pretty formidable wall. – 11:11 AM

Announcer just said that Giannis Antetokounmpo has “a great second hand” in Tyler Dorsey, who has the first five Greek points as they play Croatia in the EuroBasket. Dorsey, of course, signed a two-way contract with the Mavericks. Watch on ESPN+ – 11:11 AM

More on this storyline

Giannis blocked a crucial shot by Ivica Zubac and made a reverse alley-oop jam on the other end (86-82). And it was not the end. Giannis blocked one more shot and finished the game with a 2+1 play. Even though Giannis Antetokounmpo did not have a perfect shooting night, the Greek Freak posted 27 points (9/20 2PT, 0/4 3PT, 9/11 FT), 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocks, and 30 EFF. Tyler Dorsey aided him with the same 27 points (4/8 2PT, 5/9 3PT, 4/4 FT), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 27 EFF. -via BasketNews / September 2, 2022
The Golden State Warriors head coach Kerr spoke this week with Egyptian outlet FilGoal during a trip to Cairo, Egypt to coach campers at a Basketball Without Borders program. Kerr, who was born in Beirut, Lebanon, spent several years living in Cairo as a teenager but had not been back since 1985. During the interview with FilGoal, Kerr was asked which current NBA player (not on the Warriors) he would most like to coach. “[Milwaukee Bucks star] Giannis [Antetokounmpo],” Kerr replied. “I’d love to coach Giannis. He’s a great player, but he also seems like a great person.” -via Larry Brown Sports / September 1, 2022
Despite that fact, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas recently had some interesting things to say about Giannis Antetokounmpo. “Right now, his game is all physical,” Arenas said. He explained. “I’m saying if you guys had him No. 1 or No. 2, and he does not understand this game yet, that’s scary,” Arenas said. “… Give him Tim Duncan’s knowledge, whole different player, isn’t he?” -via ahnfiredigital.com / August 31, 2022
The duo of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Tyler Dorsey provided an efficient performance to overpower Poland 101-78 (27-10, 23-27, 19-22, 32-19) in the second match of the Acropolis tournament. Giannis led the team with 24 points in almost 23 minutes of play. He shot a whopping 19 free throws, making 12 of them. Several Boston Celtics alumni faced off in Germany’s surprise 76-63 EuroBasket win over France

Guerschon Yabusele led France with 18 points, a block, and an assist in the loss.

Several Boston Celtics alumni faced off in the German National Team’s surprise 76-63 win over the French National Team on Thursday, which saw former Celtics center Guerschon Yabusele led France with 18 points, a block, and an assist in the loss, with ex-Boston big man Vincent Poirier putting up another 8 points, 4 boards, an assist, and 2 steals. Wing and Celtics alum Evan Fournier added another 7 points, 2 rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

For Germany, Dennis Schroder chipped in 11 points, a board, 5 assists, and a steal, while old friend Daniel Theis put up another 8 points, 6 boards, an assist, and a steal to help secure the upset win over the 2020 Olympic silver medalists from Tokyo.

“No one said it’s going to be easy,” said French (and Minnesota Timberwolves) center Rudy Gobert via Eurohoops’ Antonis Stroggylakis. “We are facing this team at their home.”

“We aren’t good today. We got way too many turnovers. And they were very physical. We got to find ways to play our game when the other team is physical and the game isn’t played our way.”
