France’s former Celtics, Fournier, Poirier, can’t stop Slovenia and Doncic’s historic game

A historic EuroBasket performance that saw Slovenian National Team and Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic put up an absurd 47 points.

In an historic EuroBasket performance, Luka Doncic produced an absurd 47 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists to power Slovenia past France, 88-82, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Dallas Mavericks’ star’s performance was too much for the two former Boston Celtics who played in the game for France; former Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele did not play.

Evan Fournier had the better game, compared to Vincent Poirier. Fournier produced 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including a very poor 1-of-6 game from beyond the 3-point arc. He added 3 assists.

While Poirier had a more efficient game than the ex-Boston shooting guard, he only added 2 points and as many boards in 5:40 of floor time in the loss.

With the win, Slovenia (4-1) takes first place in Group B play. France falls to 3-2 and retains a thin grip on second place in the group.

“(Doncic is) really good, but when he makes shots like that, it’s tough,” Fournier said after the game via Eurohoops’ Antonis Stroggylakis. “When you give him shots that he makes, then he gets confident, and then it’s hard to stop. You have to do the job early on him. You can’t give him anything easy.”

Low-scoring night for former Celtics Hernangomez, Larkin as Spain defeats Turkey, 72-69, in EuroBasket play

Boston alumni Shane Larkin and Juancho Hernangomez combined for just 11 points as Larkin’s Turkey fell to Hernangomez’s Spain.

On a night when both former Boston Celtics in the contest had relatively low-scoring games, floor general Shane Larkin and big man Juancho Hernangomez combined for 11 points in Turkey’s 72-69 loss to Spain in EuroBasket play.

For Spain, Hernangomez put up 8 points, 7 rebounds an assist and a block. He committed one foul and one turnover in just over 18 minutes of play off the bench. For Turkey, Larkin’s shooting woes continued. The onetime Miami player added 3 points on 1-of-6 shooting.

Larkin also contributed 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and a steal in the loss, fouling twice and turning the ball over once in just under 31 minutes of game time.

With the win, Spain improves to 4-1 in Group A to take the top spot while Turkey drops to 3-2 in Group A and is in second.

Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis’ Germany falls to Luka Doncic’s Slovenia 88-80

The two Celtics alums find their German National Team in a three-way tie for first place in EuroBasket’s Group B.

The German National Team lost to Luka Doncic’s Slovenian National Team 88-80 to fall to 3-1 in EuroBasket play on Tuesday afternoon. Former Boston Celtics Dennis Schroder and Daniel Theis’ find their team in a three-way tie for first place in EuroBasket’s Group B as a result.

Schroder had the better game of the two. The former Boston floor general put up 19 points and 5 assists in slightly less than 30 minutes of floor time. Theis chipped in 8 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist in a little less than 18 minutes of game time.

The former Celtics center got himself into foul trouble in a manner Boston fans can recall all too well, the War on Theis resulted in the Salzgitter native picking up five personal fouls despite his limited time on the court.

The loss — Germany’s first in the group stage of play — means the team needs Slovenia to lose to France for it to have a chance to win the group outright.

Slovenian shockingly injured himself on the tipoff after landing on a ref during the EuroBasket tournament

I doubt you’ve ever seen this happen during a competitive game.

I don’t care how much basketball you have watched in your lifetime. I doubt you’ve ever seen this happen during a competitive game.

Mike Tobey, a 7-footer from the United States who played college basketball at Virginia, secured his Slovenian passport in 2021 so that he could play for the national team.

Tobey represented the country during the Olympics in Tokyo and he has recently become the preferred pick and roll partner for NBA superstar Luka Doncic. He is one of the starters for Slovenia in the EuroBasket tournament, and he took the tip-off against Germany during group play on Tuesday.

No one was expecting Tobey to lose his balance on the tip-off, but after bumping into the referee on his way down, the starter hobbled off of the court and had to leave the game.

Germany’s Dennis Schroder looked particularly confused by what happened.

You can take another look at the tumble, and his subsequent reaction, here:

Tobey, who had 24 points and 8 rebounds against Lithuania last week, eventually returned to the game.

His presence was necessary to match up against Germany, as the German squad entered the game with an impressive 3-0 record during group play.

Giannis Antetokounmpo dropped 41 points on Ukraine, becoming only the second player in the 21st century to score more than 40 points in a EuroBasket game after Dirk Nowitzki’s 43 points against Spain in 2001. He’s also the third Greek player ever to have scored more than 40 points in a EuroBasket game, after Giorgos Kolokithas in 1967 and Nikos Galis, who did it five times, most notably in the 1989 EuroBasket semi-final (45) vs. the Soviet Union. -via BasketNews / September 6, 2022

Khris Middleton is in Milan with Bucks owner Marc Lasry, SVP Alex Lasry, general manager Jon Horst and assistant general manager Milt Newton. “I saw them once, but I zoomed out and focused on the game,” Giannis revealed. “They’ve seen me many times and know what I’m capable of. Celtics alum Juancho Hernangomez helps lift Spain past Montenegro 82-65 in EuroBasket play

The win also secured a spot for the former Boston big man and his Spanish National Team in Berlin for the next phase of EuroBasket play.

Former Boston Celtics big man Juancho Hernangomez helped Spain defeat Montenegro, 82-65, while coming off the bench. With the win, Spain improves to 3-1 and leads Group A in EuroBasket play.

The star of the Netflix film, “Hustle,” put up 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in a reserve role. His shooting was unusually bad. “Bo Cruz” hit 2-of-7 from the field overall and 2-of-5 from 3. He did not get to the free throw line. Hernangomez committed two personal fouls and one turnover in one of his less efficient outings in the EuroBasket so far.

The win secured a spot for the former Boston big man and his Spanish National Team for the next phase of EuroBasket play.

Trio of Celtics alumni lead France to 81-68 blowout of Bosnia and Herzegovina in EuroBasket play

A trio of Boston Celtics alumni led the French National Team to an 81-68 blowout of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian National Team in EuroBasket play on Tuesday afternoon to help push France to a 3-1 record in Group B EuroBasket play, keeping the Lithuanian National Team’s hopes alive to advance to the next stage in the process.

France was led by former Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, as many steals, and a block, with ex-Celtics shooting guard Evan Fournier chipping in another 14 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists to help his national team secure the victory.

Ex-Celtics center Vincent Poirier also added another 9 points and 7 boards to the French National Team off of the bench.

“This is the first day that the crowd is with us, so it’s pretty great,” related France’s Thomas Heurtel after the game. “I think we started the game with a good intensity.”

Boston Celtics alum Shane Larkin has quiet game in Turkey’s 78-63 win over Belgium

The Miami product put up just 3 points, 4 boards, 6 assists, and 2 steals in over 30 minutes of play.

Despite a quiet night on offense from former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin, his Turkish National Team managed to defeat the Belgian National Team on Tuesday morning, the Miami product finding other ways to help his team to a 78-63 win over Belgium in Group A EuroBasket play.

The Celtics alumnus put up and made just one 2-point field goal attempt in the contest despite playing for just over 32 minutes of game time, and got to the free throw line once, splitting his attempts for a total of just 3 points in the victory for Turkey. Larkin instead focused on being more of a pure point guard in this game with a total of 6 assists, perhaps out of concern with his rough shooting contest in Turkey’s loss to Georgia on Sunday.

The Cincinnati native also had 4 rebounds and 2 steals to go with as many turnovers and no personal fouls.

Of course, we reacted and tried to defend ourselves – exactly what we are going to do as men. I also think it’s a security problem. But I don’t know if it’s a security problem or if they just showed tolerance to their players. We understand that they’re at home, but this is unacceptable. What happens on the court is fine, but we should talk more about what happens off the court,” Korkmaz told the media.

Stashed Celtics guard Yam Madar gets 17 points vs. Poland with Israel in EuroBasket play

Stashed Boston Celtics floor general Yam Madar had one of his best games yet in EuroBasket play for the Israeli National Team, but it was not enough to beat Poland.

Stashed Boston Celtics floor general Yam Madar had one of his best games yet in EuroBasket play for the Israeli National Team, but it was not enough to beat the Polish National Team, which won 85-76 on Monday.

The Beit Dagan native put up 17 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block in the loss. He shot 5-of-8 from the field overall, a sizzling 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe in slightly less than 21 minutes of floor time. Madar committed one turnover but no personal fouls for one of his most complete contests at this level.

Even so, Israel needed more than what Madar alone could provide. It fell to 2-1 in Group D play. Poland seized the top spot in the group with Israel second.
