It was Jonas Valanciunas’ best game wearing the Lithuanian national team shirt. His dominance was felt throughout the entire game. Not only did he almost singlehandedly fouled out Daniel Theis and Johannes Thiemann, but the center also recorded 34 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, made 5 assists, and drew 13 fouls during the game. On the other side of the court, Franz Wagner was phenomenal. Although the Orlando Magic forward was not that noticeable during the two overtimes, he scored 32 points on 8-for-13 shooting and grabbed 8 rebounds in just his fourth official game with the German national team’s shirt. -via BasketNews / September 4, 2022

Boston alums Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis survive comeback bid from Montenegro as Germany advances 85-79 in EuroBasket knockout round

Two more Celtics alumni push their team to the round of eight in EuroBasket knockout play.

Boston Celtics alumni Dennis Schroder and Daniel Theis helped their German National Team survive a late onslaught from the Montenegrin National Team in EuroBasket play on Saturday afternoon, advancing from the knockout stage game with an 85-79 victory over Montenegro after falling behind by as much as 16 points early in the game.

The former Celtics floor general put up a solid 22 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, and a steal, but turned the ball over 5 times and shot just 28.6% from beyond the arc. Ex-Boston big man Daniel Theis had a quieter but more efficient game in the win, scoring 9 points and 4 boards, but picked up 5 personal fouls in just over 20 minutes of floor time, the War on Theis continuing.

Montenegro nearly upset Germany, coming to within 3 points of taking the lead in the game’s final minutes after coming back from a 27-point hole.

Celtics president Brad Stevens spotted at Turkey-France EuroBasket game

What Stevens was doing there was umclear, though he very well could have been scouting an old friend in Guerschon Yabusele or some other prospect.

If you thought it was just you paying more attention to the quadrennial European Basketball Championship — better known as the EuroBasket — than you ever have before, you might be surprised to learn even some of the Boston Celtics’ top brass are as well.

In fact, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has an eye on the goings-on in EuroBasket action, the former Boston head coach turning up in the audience for the knockout phase contest between the French National Team and the Turkish National Team, confirmed via a FIBA tweet. What Stevens was doing there was umclear, though he very well could have been scouting an old friend in Guerschon Yabusele or some other prospect.

He might also have simply been there to enjoy the game, though knowing the Celtics exec, that seems the least plausible scenario of the above.

Yabu, Fournier, Poirier send fellow former Celtic Larkin fishing as France defeats Turkey, 87-86 in OT

Three Celtics alumni on the court is worth more than one on the bench, it seems.

With former Boston Celtic Shane Larkin out injured with ligament damage in his hand, per Eurohoops, Turkey fell to France, 87-86, in overtime during the knockout stage of EuroBasket 2022 on Saturday.

On France’s side of the scoreboard, former Celtics shooting guard Evan Fournier put up 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in an inefficient outing that saw him commit four turnovers and shoot 38.5% from the field. Ex-Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele added 9 points, 3 assists and a steal in what was a relatively quiet game from the former No. 16 pick.

Center Vincent “Sexpants” Poirier chipped in 6 points off the bench in the nail-biter that kept the French alive.

The news of Larkin’s injury likely explains much of his shooting woes in recent games for Turkey. The former Miami player is expected to be able to return to action in two months after undergoing surgery.

“The goal is the gold medal but now the goal and focus is our next game in what’s probably the best EuroBasket,” said France’s Rudy Gobert after the game

My take on Giannis is he’s the best or second best player in the world along with Jokić, and neither of those players can dribble like Kyrie and it doesn’t matter at all because skill and impact are not the same and we should probably value impact more but balldontstop ruined it. – 2:02 AM

This was confirmed by the Greek national team assistant coach Sotiris Manolopoulos while speaking on the Greek national television. As he said: “We decided to do just an optional training session. We left it up to the players to come and make some shots. Giannis did his own training at the hotel and tomorrow will practice without any issues. He is healthy”. -via EuroHoops.net / September 9, 2022
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 25 points in 19 minutes before leaving midway through the third quarter with an ankle issue in Greece’s 90-69 win over Estonia in the Group C finale for both teams at the EuroBasket tournament Thursday. Antetokounmpo was clearly limping after the game, but was able to take part in the postgame on-court celebration and exchanged handshakes with Estonia’s players and coaches. Greece coach Dimitrios Itoudis said Antetokounmpo got ice and treatment, but did not sound worried. “It’s all good,” Itoudis said. -via ESPN / September 9, 2022

Five potential EuroBasket standout depth targets for the Boston Celtics’ 2022-23 roster

One, in fact, they know quite well already.

Could the Boston Celtics be keeping an eye on the play of any number of potential targets to add to the team this season in EuroBasket play? The quadrennial FIBA European Basketball Championship has seen some excellent outings by a number of prospects who might make sense to add to Boston’s roster as depth options once they have had a look at the players they have on their roster already in training camp.

With word being that the Celtics intend to take their time, don’t expect a move for an overseas (or any) player in the short-term future. But if EuroBasket and EuroLeague excellence is any indicator of current NBA potential, these five players could make sense for Boston.

And one, in fact, they know quite well already.

PHOTOS: Rockets prospects Alperen Sengun, Usman Garuba at EuroBasket

Rockets prospects Alperen Sengun (Turkey) and Usman Garuba (Spain) are both back in action this weekend at EuroBasket. Here’s a look back at their group-stage play.

The knockout stage of the European Basketball Championship, best known as EuroBasket 2022, is taking place between Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 18. All subsequent games are being played inside the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, Germany.

The knockout stage comprises 16 nations that advanced from group-stage play, which began on Sept. 1. The good news for the Houston Rockets is that both of the team’s players at EuroBasket — Alperen Sengun for Turkey, and Usman Garuba for Spain — have advanced. Turkey went 3-2 in the group stage, while Spain was 4-1.

In four phases, that group of 16 will be cut to eight, four, two, and ultimately one champion via the Sept. 18 championship game. There will also be a third-place game on that same date.

Through the five group-stage games, Sengun has averaged 18.2 points (63.3% FG), 8.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 30.8 minutes for Turkey, while Garuba is averaging 4.4 points (69.2% FG) and 4.8 rebounds in 16.4 minutes for Spain. Later this month, each international player will begin his second professional season with the Rockets after being selected in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft.

For now, scroll on for photos of their EuroBasket game action.

Celtics alum GiGi Datome helps Italy close out group phase with 90-56 blowout of Great Britain

Yes, THAT Gigi Datome.

It might have been a while since you had thought about him given how long he has been playing overseas, but Boston Celtics forward alumnus Luigi Datome was no small part of his Italian National Team’s 90-56 win over the British National Team in FIBA EuroBasket play on Thursday evening.

The 34-year-old swingman is playing a bigger role for Italy than he might have in the wake of their losing Boston vet forward Danilo Gallinari to an ACL tear, with Datome stepping up to be the team’s second-leading scorer in their victory over Great Britain. Datome put up 13 points, 4 rebounds, an assist, and as many steals in just over 17 minutes of floor time.

The Montebelluna native shot a red-hot 5-of-7 from the field overall, including hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc with no turnovers or personal fouls.

“We wanted to finish in the right way. We take the positive things of these matches and we will be ready for the game on Sunday,” teammate Giampaolo Ricci said after the game via Eurohoops.
