Four-star cornerback from Georgia puts Ohio State in top eight

Another top-rated defensive back seems to like what Ohio State has to offer.

A cornerback from the state of Georgia has trimmed his list to eight and included Ohio State as a finalist. Ethan Nation is a four-star recruit and is ranked as the No. 22 ranked corner in the country and a top-200 player according to 247Sports composite rankings.

On top of the Buckeyes, Nation also listed Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Michigan, Texas A&M, Oregon, and USC. The coveted DB talked about each of his finalists with On3 and had this to say about Ohio State.

I love Ohio State’s ability to not only develop corners but to get them drafted,” Nation said. “I fell in love with their culture, and the true rivalry they have with the team up north.

Whether Ethan Nation will choose to become part of Buckeye Nation remains to be seen. There are no crystal ball predictions at this time, but we’ll let you know as a decision is made.

While making the rounds on the recruiting trail last month, Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed stopped by a Peach State high school to check up on this highly regarded cornerback prospect.

Roswell (Ga.) High School’s Ethan Nation – a consensus four-star recruit in the class of 2023 – drew a school visit from Reed in mid-January.

“It means a lot just to know that a big school like that, with everything going on, that they’re still checking up on me and making sure that I know that I’m still like their top priority,” Nation said in an interview with The Clemson Insider.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior is ranked as high as the No. 8 cornerback and No. 82 overall prospect in the 2023 class by ESPN.

Though Reed couldn’t communicate with Nation directly at his school due to NCAA rules, he conveyed a message to Nation through his coach.

“He just passes on that he’s still really interested and that he just wanted to continue to talk and stuff like that,” Nation said.

Nation and Reed have been building a relationship for quite some time now, one that Nation says has “gotten really stronger over the course of the months.”

What has Nation been hearing from Reed of late?

“That they’re still highly interested and they just want to get me up there to visit,” he said.

Nation was invited to attend Clemson’s elite junior day last weekend but wasn’t able to make the trip, as he went to Auburn for its junior day. The weekend before, he traveled to Tennessee for its junior day.

Nation received an offer from Clemson when he visited in June of last year. When he considers Clemson, a plus for the Tigers is the fact that Reed stayed put amid all the coaching changes that have taken place on Dabo Swinney’s staff this offseason.

“Even with the whole staff change, that he still stuck with Dabo and just stuck with it means a lot,” Nation said. “And him still coming up to see me and knowing that they’re really interested also means a lot to me in the recruitment and relationship that I’m building with him.”

In addition to Clemson, Nation has offers from schools such as Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Oregon, Southern Cal and Texas A&M, among many others on his list of around four dozen offers.

Right now, he doesn’t have a timetable for his college decision.

“I’m still just feeling things out,” he said. “I don’t know when I really want to commit.”

Looking ahead to his upcoming senior season, Nation wants to use it as an opportunity to get ready for the next level.

“Just preparing for college, really, because I know the senior season’s really just going to be me preparing for college,” he said. “So, just getting bigger and stronger, just staying in the weight room.”

As a junior in 2021, Nation posted 30 tackles to go with 620 yards and 14 touchdowns on offense.

4-star Peach State CB: ‘I just love how Clemson’s a family team’

The Clemson Insider recently checked back in with a Class of 2023 cornerback, who picked up an offer from the Tigers earlier this summer.

Roswell (Ga.) High School four-star Ethan Nation is a key target for the Tigers in the 2023 Class. That was apparent when Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed made his way down to Roswell the Friday prior to Clemson’s Week 4 matchup against N.C. State, as TCI previously reported.

Reed, who has played a key role in Nation’s recruitment, made the 2.5-hour trip to meet with the highly-touted prospect just to catch up and talk. They hadn’t seen one another in person since Nation was up in Tiger Town for a visit in early June. That was back when he received his offer.

“It means a lot because he could probably be seeing people that are committed,” Nation said. “Him coming while I’m still undecided means that he really wants me. He just wants to build a connection.”

Nation detailed his relationship with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

“I talk to Coach Reed and Coach Venables pretty often and their message to me is that they just really want me bad,” he said. “Just on a weekly basis, keeping in touch with them as much as possible, just to keep the connection going.

Nation explains that his relationship with Reed has developed into Clemson’s cornerbacks coach being an Uncle-esque figure in his life.

“We’re just really close,” Nation added. “We share the same likings and things like that. We’re not really too far off from each other.”

Nation is a self-described unselfish, team-first player. He’s an elite cornerback prospect, who has impressive ball skills, which can also be attributed to work on the other side of the ball as a wide receiver.

“He loves my ball skills,” Nation said when asked what Reed likes about his game. “He wants me to keep on the defensive side of the ball. He said that I’m not going over to the offense because he wants to keep me away from them and all that, while I was at the visit. We joked around with that, but I’m pretty sure he just wants me to stay at corner.”

Nation hasn’t set up a visit to Memorial Stadium, but he plans on making it up to The Valley for a game soon. He did, however, make his way to Charlotte earlier this season to watch Clemson take on Georgia in the marquee matchup that was the Duke’s Mayo Classic.

“I loved the environment. It shows that the [Clemson] fans are loyal, even when they were down, they were still loud and crazy,” he said. So, I mean I really loved the environment and how the fans reacted.”

As far as other gameday visits are concerned, he’ll be heading to the Penn State-Michigan whiteout game in Happy Valley on Saturday, Nov. 13.

In addition to Clemson, Nation listed Oklahoma, Ohio State, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Oregon, USC, Cal and Texas A&M as schools currently standing out in his recruitment. Though, he estimates that Clemson currently holds a top-5 status for him.

“I just love how they’re a family team like they do everything together,” he said when asked about his overall impression of Clemson thus far. “So if it’s just the offseason, they’re going golfing, the whole team’s gonna go golfing. I would probably just say how they’re a family-oriented team.”

Nation will be dropping a top-14 list sometime in the near future, he added.

One of Clemson’s coaches hit the road Friday to see a prominent four-star recruit in the 2023 class.

Mike Reed made his way down to Roswell (Ga.) High School Friday to check in on Ethan Nation, The Clemson Insider has learned.

Nation, who currently holds an offer from the Tigers, hasn’t met with Reed face-to-face since his unofficial visit to Clemson earlier this summer.

He was in attendance for Clemson’s season opener against Georgia, as a guest of the Tigers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte (N.C.), but obviously didn’t get the chance to talk with Reed in person.

Reed won’t be able to stay for Roswell’s game tonight, a 7:30m p.m. matchup against Walton High School (Marietta, Ga.). Clemson is on the road this weekend and will be traveling to Carter-Finely Stadium to take on N.C. State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Nonetheless, Clemson’s interest in Nation remains strong.

Nation (5-11, 170) is ranked as the No. 17 cornerback in the 2023 class by 247Sports, while ESPN ranks him as the No. 8 corner in his class.

Top cornerback has Clemson gameday visit on ‘to-do list’

Among several cornerbacks in the class of 2023 with an offer from Clemson is Roswell (Ga.) High School four-star Ethan Nation.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound rising junior received the offer upon his visit to campus in early June.

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Nation, one of the nation’s top cornerback prospects, to get the latest in his recruitment and more.

“It’s been pretty good. Just still taking it day by day,” he said of the recruiting process. “But other than that, it’s been pretty good. Just focusing on the upcoming season.”

Nation remains in regular communication with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, and their relationship continues to grow.

“It’s getting better each time we talk,” Nation said.

What is Reed’s message to Nation as he gets ready for his junior campaign?

“Just get bigger and stronger,” Nation said, “and just focus on the season and focus on each game day by day.”

Clemson is one of a number of schools that Nation, the younger brother of a former Clemson Rally Cat, has on his mind for a game-day visit in the fall.

“I haven’t talked to them yet about a game,” he said. “But they’re on my to-do list to go to a game.”

Nation named Ohio State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oregon as some of the other schools he wants to take in games at during the season.

Clemson is among those at the top of Nation’s list of more than 40 scholarship offers.

“I’d say they’re pretty high, along with some other schools,” he said when asked where the Tigers stand with him.

Asked what appeals to him most about Clemson, Nation didn’t hesitate before answering.

“The culture for sure,” he said. “How it’s just a family and a winning culture and everyone is one, they’re all together. So, I’d probably say that’s the main reason why they’re so high.”

Nation is ranked as high as the No. 7 cornerback and No. 76 overall prospect in the 2023 class by ESPN. As a sophomore last season, he notched eight interceptions to go with more than 50 tackles.

5-star loves how Clemson is setup

Clemson is always going to be recruiting some of the nation’s top prospects and the Tigers have been keeping tabs on one of the country’s best cornerbacks in the Class of 2023.

A.. Harris, a class of 2023 recruit from Glenwood School in Phenix City, Ala., is the nation’s No. 3 cornerback and No. 21 overall prospect in his respective class, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Harris (6-2, 185) caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding his recruitment and just what he’s been hearing from the Tigers lately.

“Just how they can better me as a young man, as well as a football player,” Harris said. “Clemson being the best of both worlds as far as the genuine feel and the academics and the football. They’re just making sure that I get the bigger picture of that program.”

Harris released a top-13 list back on July 6, which featured the Tigers, along with Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Florida, Miami, LSU, Virginia Tech, Southern Cal and Utah.

He’ll see the schools that he hasn’t been able to visit before he makes his decision, he said.

“A genuine feel,” Harris said when asked what factors he’s looking for in a school at the next level,” and making sure that they give me the education that I need to have beyond the football years. You can never make a decision based off your position coaches, they can always leave.

“Just making sure that the whole coaching staff is invested in me and will take care of me and I have a genuine feel from the whole coaching staff rather than my position coach.”

Harris has carved out relationships with Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall and cornerbacks coach Mike Reed.

“Just such a genuine feel from all of them,” Harris said when asked to characterize his relationships with Clemson’s coaching staff. “I like how we don’t always have to talk football. We can talk about just life, which is something that’s cool because you don’t always have to recruit me. I’m still human at the end of the day and I still live a regular life like everybody else. It’s just nice that I don’t always have to talk about football with those guys.”

Harris was able to see Clemson in person back on June 5. He was officially extended a scholarship offer during his unofficial visit, which he took with Roswell (Ga.) four-star cornerback Ethan Nation.

“I loved the way Clemson is set up,” Harris said. “It’s a very discreet location. There’s not too much going on all-around it. I’m a homebody, I don’t really like doing too much. That’s kind of right up my alley and it’s just making sure that you get your education and playing football at a high level. That’s just something that’s big for me. I’m not really a big city type of guy. I definitely like the setup of the whole campus.”

Harris enjoyed that he was able to take in the visit with Nation as the two had a fun time together, interacting with the coaches and things of that nature.

This is all new to Harris. It was different for him because the standout Alabama cornerback wasn’t being recruited before the pandemic. He was finally able to put voices to faces on the recruiting trail this summer.

“This was all so new to me and my parents,” he said. “But, it was a blessing from the man up above because there were so many kids that wanted to get out to college and see what college has to offer. I’m thankful that I don’t have to make my decision blind. It was definitely amazing.”

At the end of the day, Harris is a self-described competitor, who loves football.

“I’m a technician,” Harris added. “Someone who truly focuses on the technical aspect, especially with me being a taller DB. I have to be honed in on all the little things, making sure that I don’t take any extra steps in-and-out of my transitions. I’m definitely aggressive…I’ll compete with anybody, no matter the size, no matter anything.

“Whoever gets me will be getting someone that wants to be the best and wants to go win a National Championship and help his team do so.”

First and foremost, Harris is a team-first player. When asked about his goals for this upcoming season and beyond, Harris didn’t hesitate with his answer.

“Win a state championship, that’s the only thing I want to do,” he said.

Harris believes that individual success comes with team success and everything else will fall into place from there.
