Penn State in Top 5 of 2025 4-star quarterback

Penn State one of the top five schools for four-star QB in Class of 2025.

Penn State has had a good string of quarterback commitments in the past few years.

They landed the number one player at the position in 2022 when signing [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag]. They followed that up with flipping three-star Elite 11 finalist [autotag]Jaxon Smolik[/autotag] from Tulane to commit to them in 2023. In the 2024 class, they have four-star [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag] committed to the program as well.

Now, they have their sights set on another quarterback recruit in the class of 2025.

[autotag]Ryan Montgomery[/autotag] is a four-star recruit from the state of Ohio. He is a 6’3″ 210 pound quarterback with a big arm constantly looking down the field to make explosive plays. He has good mobility in the pocket and shows speed when he runs on designed plays or is flushed outside.

The four-star prospect racked up just under 30 scholarship offers from schools across the country before cutting his list to five schools on Tuesday.

Penn State, Michigan, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina are the programs that made his list.

On3’s industry rankings have him as the 16th ranked quarterback in the class of 2025 and the 206th best player overall.

Prior to choosing his top five schools, Montgomery had visited Ohio State and Michigan the most with nine unofficial visits. He cut the Buckeyes as an option, but kept the Wolverines.

He’s visited Penn State four times with the last trip to Happy Valley coming in October 2022.

On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine had Ohio State as the favorites to land the instate quarterback with 22.8%, but didn’t make his top five. Michigan is currently second in the rankings with 20.0% and Penn State fourth with 6.4%.

The percentages should be updated soon to reflect the list that he’s put out as he starts planning out more visits during the fall.

Montgomery also told Chad Simmons of On3 that he would like to commit to a school before his senior year season. He’s not sure exactly when, but that’s the timeline he has at the moment.

Updated On3 recruiting rankings gives big boost to Penn State commits

Penn State’s Class of 2024 gets a boost form updated On300 player rankings from On3.

Penn State’s Class of 2024 lineup of commitments continues to impress in the national rankings with a consensus top 10 class being put together. But on Monday, a number of Penn State commitments saw a nice boost to their individual recruiting ranking from On3, with three players moving up into the top 100 in the nation.

Offensive lineman Garrett Sexton moved up nearly 70 spots in the 2024 recruiting rankings by going from no. 112 overall in the nation up to no. 44. The newest member of the Class of 2024 lineup, defensive lineman Mylachi Williams, cruised all the way up to no. 79 from no. 205. And tight end Luke Reynolds saw a massive surge by jumping all the way up to no. 81 after not being ranked in the On300 rankings previously.

Other notable risers in the On300 rankings from On3 included quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer (no. 176), offensive lineman Cooper Cousins (no. 215), and defensive back Dejuan Lane (no. 274). All three players were previously out of the On300.

Penn State has a few other players in the Class of 2024 On300, of course. Quinton Martin (no. 109), Vaboue Toure (no. 206), and Jon Mitchell (no. 155), Josiah Brown (no. 297) are among the commits ranked inside the On300.

The updated recruiting rankings also gave Penn State a boost on the On3 team rankings for the Class of 2024. The updated rankings boosted Penn State from no. 10 in the On3 class rankings up to no. 8.

Penn State TE commit Luke Reynolds wins ALL22 MVP

Future Penn State tight end took MVP honors at the ALL22 event

It was a great week for 2024 Penn State commits at last week’s Elite 11 and ALL22 camp in Los Angeles. [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag] turned heads last week with his exceptional performance at the Elite 11 Finals.

Penn State tight end commit [autotag]Luke Reynolds[/autotag] put in a great performance of his own alongside all the top quarterback prospects in the ALL22 event that features top offensive skill positions prospects and defensive players.

Reynolds walked away as the MVP of the tight end position group following the Elite 11 Finals that took place last week. It’s a big honor for Reynolds who came into the showcase rated as a three-star prospect. He left the week showing that he could become a special talent.

On3’s director of scouting and rankings Charles Power said after the event, “[He] deserves a tip of the cap for his work on Thursday night. [He] ran a seemingly endless number of routes for the quarterbacks. Reynolds is a top athlete in the combine setting, but showed that twitch can transfer over to the field. The burst, change of direction and ability to finish catches stood out.”

There were rumors that Reynolds’ stock could be on the rise throughout the summer. He was bumped up in On3’s industry ratings to a four-star prospect after the ALL22 event where he is ranked 298th nationally and is the 17th overall tight end.

On3 themselves still have Reynolds rated as a three-star prospect.

Regardless, it was a great showing for the Penn State commit who showed how good he can be on a national setting. The Nittany Lions have developed tight ends that come through the program and should be looking forward to working with Reynolds who flashed a high ceiling of potential.

High praise for Ethan Grunkemeyer after his Elite 11 showing

Future Penn State QB Ethan Grunkemeyer received some good praise following his Elite 11 showing

[autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag] had a fantastic run at the Elite 11 Finals last week. He turned the heads of scouts, recruiting services and the evaluators at the Elite 11 showcase.

Coming into the event, Grunkemeyer was the lowest rated quarterback of the 20 finalists. He seemingly was a longshot to make the final cut as the top 11 or 12 quarterbacks at the event. However, the three-star prospect ended the three day event showing that he can compete with the best quarterback prospects in the country.

Charles Power of On3 highlighted that this was a big opportunity for Grunkemeyer to showcase his abilities on a big stage and move his stock up heading into his senior season.

Before the event, Power said, “Grunkemeyerโ€™s a guy who, for us in terms of the rankings, heโ€™s an 89 right now. Heโ€™s in that next tier of guys who are on the cusp of being a four-star. So weโ€™ll be kind of looking to see how he stacks up with the guys who are four stars currently.”

It’s safe to say that Grunkemeyer impressed with his performances, being named to the top 12 of the event and was the number three overall performer according to Power.

The only two quarterbacks who ranked above Grunkemeyer at the Elite 11 event were five-star Alabama commit Julian Sayin who won the MVP award and five-star Georgia commit Dylan Raiola.

The “Best Mechanics Award” given out by Power went to Grunkemeyer. Power was impressed by how “smooth and natural” of a passer he is and that “the ball jumps out of his hand.”

It was a big event for Penn State too. With all the hype surrounding quarterback Drew Allar heading into the season, it’s always promising that the next batch of prospects coming in are holding their own against the top talents in the country.

Overall, it was an impressive week for Grunkemeyer whose strong showing should have him moving up in the national recruiting rankings.

Penn State commit Grunkemeyer was solid at Elite 11 finals

Penn State QB commit Ethan Grunkemeyer draws rave reviews at Elite 11 Finals.

After being named one of the top performers on the first day of the Elite 11 Finals, Penn State quarterback commitment [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag] continued to shine in the exclusive high-performance football skills camp this week. Other quarterbacks put on some impressive displays, as was to be expected, but this future Penn State quarterback proved he belonged on the same playing field as some of the nation’s best and strengthened the case for the idea that Penn State may have found a hidden gem in the Class of 2024 quarterback class.

Grunkemeyer finished up his time at the Elite 11 by completing eight of 17 pass attempts with two touchdowns in the 7-on-7 portion of the event, the true highlight of the event as things come to a close in California.

Grunkemeyer was another under-the-radar name that popped all three days,” 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins wrote in a recap of the event in California. “Heโ€™s able to create plenty of power through his torso and is able to rip the ball to the second level with ease. The deep ball might not have been there for Grunkemeyer on Thursday, but it was Friday as he fired right into the teeth of the defense multiple times.”

Grunkemeyer ranked seventh in the 247Sports rankings from the Elite 11 finals but was notably higher in a roundup published by Charles Power of On3.

“Ethan Grunkemeyer was perhaps the most pleasant surprise at the Elite 11 Finals,” Power said of the Penn State commit’s performance this week. “The Penn State pledge flashed arguably the most explosive arm action at the event.”

After a stellar debut at the Elite 11 on the first day, and with a continued solid showing throughout the rest of the event, the stock for Grunkemeyer is certainly about to go to the moon form the recruiting services. Grunkemeyer is a consensus three-star recruit according to the most recently updated recruiting rankings from 247Sports, On3, and Rivals. ESPN actually has a four-star rating for Grunkemeyer, but ESPN’s four-star ranking isn’t likely to stand alone for too much longer. It will be interesting to see if a fourth star is added on the more traditional recruiting services when ratings are updated.

It can be easy to get overzealous with developments like these, but it may be an encouraging sign that Penn State’s quarterback situation will continue to look promising in the years to come. Drew Allar, a former Elite 11 finalist himself, is about to begin his tenure as Penn State’s starting quarterback this fall. The sophomore is likely to get two full years of starting experience, if not three. Whatever the case may be, perhaps the torch will be ready to be passed on to Grunkemeyer?

Penn State commit Ethan Grunkemeyer shines on Day 1 of Elite 11 Finals

Penn State QB commit Ethan Grunkemeyer stole the show on Day 1 of the Elite 11 Finals.

The nation’s top quarterback recruits gathered in California this week for the start of the Elite 11 Finals, and one of the brightest stars on the first day of the camp was Penn State commit [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag]. Grunkemeyer was one of the big winners in every aspect of the first day of the Elite 11 Finals with solid performances in each of the drills the quarterbacks went through.

On3 went so far as to name Grunkemeyer its Day 1 MVP.

“His arm jumped out from the first drill,” said On3’s Charles Power in his Day 1 recap from the Elite 11 Finals. “The football came out of his hand with noticeable velocity. We thought he consistently had the most juice on his throws of any Elite 11 Finalist on Wednesday evening.”

While Grunkemeyer impressed with his arm strength, he capped the day by finishing second in the event’s rail shot competition with a shot down the sideline to a streaking wide receiver. Not a bad way to get the event started for one of Penn State’s future quarterbacks.

Grunkemeyer is a three-star recruit in the Class of 2024 who recently committed to Penn State. But if he continues this kind of performance at the Elite 11 Finals in the next two days, it may not be long before his recruiting ranking is revised with a fourth star, the way things are sounding out of California.

Penn State QB commit earns Elite 11 invite

It was a big weekend for this new Penn State commitment with an invite to the Elite 11 finals

It is safe to say Ethan Grunkemeyer had quite a memorable weekend in State College. In the same weekend, the Class of 2024 quarterback from Ohio announced his commitment to Penn State and then went on to perform well enough at an Elite 11 camp to receive an invite to the Elite11 finals.

Grunkemeyer is a four-star recruit from Lewis Center, Ohio, and is a nice pickup for James Franklin and his coaching staff out of Ohio. Grunkemeyer is scouted as a potential starter down the road and could potentially be the next in line to start for Penn State after Drew Allar, another Ohio recruit for the Nittany Lions (who, coincidentally, succeeds another Ohio product in Sean Clifford).

Penn State offered Grunkemeyer a scholarship in April of this year and a month later received his verbal commitment.

Grunkemeyer joins a growing list of Penn State quarterbacks who have been invited to the Elite 11 Finals including Zac Wasserman (1999), Anthony Morelli (2003), Pat Devlin (2005), Rob Bolden (2009), Christian Hackenberg (2012), Sean Clifford (2016), Drew Allar (2021), and Jaxon Smolik (2022).

Recruiting Roundup: 5 teams get commitments from 2024 QB prospects

While Van Buren was the highest-ranked prospect among them, Oregon wasn’t the only team that added talent at QB.

Oregon won the recruiting race over the weekend, hands-down. The Ducks picked up two new blue-chip commits for their 2024 class, starting with Durant (Okla.) four-star defensive lineman Xadavien Sims. They also added St. Frances Academy (Md.) four-star quarterback Michael Van Buren.

While Van Buren was the highest-ranked prospect among them, Oregon wasn’t the only team that added talent at QB. Four other programs also got commitments from quarterbacks in the 2024 class. Here’s who they are, where they play their high school football and where they rank at the position compared to their peers.

Penn State Class of 2024 snapshot recruiting profile: Ethan Grunkemeyer

Here is a snapshot profile look at Penn State’s newest addition to its Class of 2024 lineup.

Penn State has plenty of youth on its side when it comes to the quarterback position. One of the newest pieces of the quarterback grouping in Happy Valley in the Class of 2024 is [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag], a three-star recruit out of Ohio who committed to the Nittany Lions in May 2023.

Grunkemeyer joined a recruiting class that was already sitting with a top 10 ranking in the nation in late May, and he did so likely knowing he was not going to be asked to take on a major leading role for the offense by offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich any time too soon. Penn State has Drew Allar being broken in as the team’s starting quarterback for the 2023 season, and likely that will be the case for 2024, and perhaps 2025. If that is the case, then the three-star commit will have two seasons working as a backup learning how the system works and better preparing his body for being a potential successor to Allar down the line in a few years.
