Biggest theme of Penn State’s 2024 class: balance

Penn State’s 2024 class offers one of the more balanced recruiting hauls in the country.

With the first and busiest day of the college football early signing period behind us, we can confirm that Penn State signed all 25 of its Class of 2024 commits earlier today. It was a “drama-free” signing day according to [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] who spoke after all the commits had signed. The class is now locked in for next year so let’s break it down.

Penn State returns a boatload of starting-caliber players from last season but will lose several starters to the NFL with more expected to announce in the coming month. Penn State has never been a heavy transfer portal school and relies mainly on keeping its returning players intact while reloading with a strong freshman class.

This years’ class is ranked 14th in the country by 247Sports Composite and 16th by On3. With 12 offensive commits and 13 defensive commits this year’s group is evenly balanced eluding to the fact that Franklin and his staff want to add quality depth around the board and fill in any neccessary holes from departing players.

From a positon standpoint is was more of the same type of balance across the board:

  • 7 skill players: QB [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag], running backs [autotag]Quintin Martin[/autotag] and [autotag]Corey Smith[/autotag], wide recievers [autotag]Josiah Brown[/autotag], [autotag]Tyseer Denmark[/autotag], and [autotag]Peter Gonzalez[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Luke Reynolds[/autotag]
  • 5 offensive lineman: [autotag]Eagan Boyer[/autotag], [autotag]Caleb Brewer[/autotag], [autotag]Cooper Cousins[/autotag], [autotag]Donovan Harbour[/autotag], [autotag]Garrett Sexton[/autotag]
  • 6 defensive lineman: [autotag]Liam Andrews[/autotag], [autotag]DeAndre Cook[/autotag], [autotag]T.A. Cunningham[/autotag], [autotag]Xavier Gilliam[/autotag], [autotag]Jaylen Harvey[/autotag], and [autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag]
  • 5 secondary players: cornerbacks Antoine Belgrave-Shorter, Kenneth Woseley, Jon Mitchell, and safties Dejuan Lane, and Vaboue Toure
  • 2 linebackers: Kari Jackson and Anthony Specca

No one position or side of the ball dominated the 2024 recruiting cycle for Penn State, but thats a good thing because it shows that Penn State has talent everywhere. Three wide recievers were added to arguably the worst room in 2023 and a playmaking running back was added to a room featuring two former 5-star recruits. The trenches were reloaded with talent and many of the offensive line commits should challenge for starting spots in their first year.

In the time of the transfer portal and NIL perhaps a early signing day like the one Penn State had today is not exciting, but it does not matter Franklin’s method of “underpromise, overdeliver” method still produces wins. It has in the past. Penn State’s 2024 class is balanced, solid, and most importantly adds talent across the board which is key for sustained success.

The early signing period for college football is officially open as schools around the country are locking in their entire, if not the vast majority, of their recruiting classes for the Class of 2024. Penn State will be among the schools expecting to receive signed National Letters of Intent from their verbal commitments to make things official. There could always be a player or two who hold off until the traditional signing period in February for one reason or another, but Penn State is hoping for a pretty simple and straightforward opening to the early signing period.

Here is a look at each player who committed to Penn State in the Class of 2024 recruiting calendar and an update on which players have signed in the early signing period.

Penn State recruiting notebook: Ethan Grunkemeyer’s big night and Mylachi Williams wins in Ireland

Penn State QB commit Ethan Grunkemeyer thrashed Drew Allar’s alma mater and this PSU commit scored a victory in Ireland.

For some high school football players, this week has been the first chance to put on the pads and play a game. For a few others, this was Week 2 of the high school football season. Whatever the case may have been, and wherever the game may have been played, it has been a big weekend already for some of Penn State’s commits in the Class of 2024 and beyond.

Penn State quarterback commit [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag] led his team to a massive non-conference victory on Friday night. One of Grunkemeyer’s recruiting classmates in the Class of 2024, [autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag], helped lead his team to a victory in Ireland. And one of Penn State’s newest commits, Class of 2026 running back [autotag]Messiah Mickins[/autotag], was on fire in his season-opening performance on Friday night.

Updated On3 recruiting rankings gives big boost to Penn State commits

Penn State’s Class of 2024 gets a boost form updated On300 player rankings from On3.

Penn State’s Class of 2024 lineup of commitments continues to impress in the national rankings with a consensus top 10 class being put together. But on Monday, a number of Penn State commitments saw a nice boost to their individual recruiting ranking from On3, with three players moving up into the top 100 in the nation.

Offensive lineman Garrett Sexton moved up nearly 70 spots in the 2024 recruiting rankings by going from no. 112 overall in the nation up to no. 44. The newest member of the Class of 2024 lineup, defensive lineman Mylachi Williams, cruised all the way up to no. 79 from no. 205. And tight end Luke Reynolds saw a massive surge by jumping all the way up to no. 81 after not being ranked in the On300 rankings previously.

Other notable risers in the On300 rankings from On3 included quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer (no. 176), offensive lineman Cooper Cousins (no. 215), and defensive back Dejuan Lane (no. 274). All three players were previously out of the On300.

Penn State has a few other players in the Class of 2024 On300, of course. Quinton Martin (no. 109), Vaboue Toure (no. 206), and Jon Mitchell (no. 155), Josiah Brown (no. 297) are among the commits ranked inside the On300.

The updated recruiting rankings also gave Penn State a boost on the On3 team rankings for the Class of 2024. The updated rankings boosted Penn State from no. 10 in the On3 class rankings up to no. 8.

Penn State football recruiting snapshot: Four-star edge rusher Mylachi Williams

A snapshot look at Penn State Class of 2024 DE commit Mylachi Williams

Penn State scored a nice in-state recruiting victory when it managed to keep [autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag] from leaving the state. The four-star edge rusher from the Philadelphia area gave his commitment to Penn State’s Class of 2024, the third defensive lineman to commit to the Nittany Lions since Deion Barnes was named the team’s defensive line coach.

Williams joins Xavier Gilliam and De’Andre Cook as defensive line commits in Penn State’s Class of 2024, and Williams is the highest-rated of the bunch so far. Williams will come to Penn State from Drexel Hill, where he plays high school football for Monsignor Bonner. He is coming off a junior season with 50 tackles and 11 sacks and is gearing up for his senior season before making his way to Happy Valley next year.

Here is a snapshot look at Penn State commit Mylachi Williams.

Mylachi Williams is latest four-star commitment for Penn State

Penn State adds four-star commitment from one of the top in-state recruits for 2024.

After losing out on one of their top defensive lineman prospects to Stanford on Saturday, Penn State was able to land a four-star prospect of their own Saturday night.

The Nittany Lions picked up a commitment from [autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag] who plays his high school football in the Philadelphia area.

It was a quick turnaround for [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] and his staff who continue to add defensive lineman in the class of 2024 under first year defensive line coach [autotag]Deion Barnes[/autotag]. There are now three commits on the defensive line for Penn State after Williams’ announcement Saturday.

On3’s industry rankings have Williams rated as the 24th best edge rusher in the class and the number seven overall prospect in the state of Pennsylvania.

It’s a big get for Penn State, considering he is a highly rated instate prospect. The Nittany Lions now have four of the top seven Pennsylvania prospects in the class of 2024 committed to them, including the top three overall players.

Williams is a 6’3 210 pound edge rusher who has wreaked havoc in the backfield with both sacks and tackles for loss.

Penn State was always high on the list of Williams.

After his first visit in January, he said, “An offer from Penn State means everything. I always watched them growing up and especially with Penn State being close to home is great.”

Penn State currently has 22 commitments in the class of 2024. They are ranked as the seventh overall class by 247Sports. They trail only Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten.

2024 4-star Edge Mylachi Williams places Texas A&M in his Top 5 program list

Ahead of his July 8 commitment, 2024 4-star Edge Mylachi Williams places Texas A&M in his Top 5 program list.

Texas A&M’s 2024 recruiting class has grown tenfold over the last three weeks, and after adding the likes of WR Jaylan Hornsby, WR Drelon Miller, OT Weston Davis, LB Tyanthony Smith, and Edge Gabriel Reliford, all in six days.

With more potential commitments this month, especially before the annual recruiting pool party on the weekend of July 30, the Aggies are quickly making their way to a top 10 or better teams ranking when all is said and done. Rounding out the Fourth of July Weekend, 2024 four-star Edge Mylachi Williams, out of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, has released his final Top 5 program list ahead of his July 8 commitment, including Pitt, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Texas A&M.

Williams is currently positioned as the 23rd-ranked Edge in the cycle and the 7th-ranked player in Pennsylvania. Unsurprisingly, he’s a favorite to land with Penn State by a large margin at 94.8%, according to On3, but the fact that the Aggies are still close to the finish line, anything can happen on July 8 as we’ve seen in the past.

Entering his senior season at Monsignor Bonner High School, his 2022 junior season was one to remember, recording 50 tackles and 11 sacks on the year. He hopes to eclipse those numbers in 2023.

Key Penn State recruiting target announces commitment date

One of Penn State’s top in-state recruiting targets sets his commitment date.

Penn State could be on the cusp of adding another notable in-stare recruit to its Class of 2024 pretty soon. In fact, we now have a specific date to add to the calendar for a four-star player expected to commit to the Nittany Lions.

[autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag], a four-star edge rusher from Drexel Hill, announced over the weekend he has a commitment date set for July 8. Williams appears to be deciding between Penn State, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse, the three schools with official visits scheduled in June. But it appears likely he will be committing to Penn State according to the most recent updates to the 247Sports crystal ball board, with all three predictions on the record favoring the Nittany Lions.

The On3 recruiting prediction machine also calculates Penn State to have a 94.8% chance of landing the commitment from Williams.

Williams is rated as the no. 6 player in the state of Pennsylvania according to the 247Sports composite rankings. If Williams does end up with Penn State, that would give Penn State five of the state’s top 10 players in the Class of 2024, including the top three players with Quinton Martin, Cooper Cousins, and Tyseer Denmark.

Crystal ball prediction has Penn State landing 4-star edge rusher

Penn State receives a major crystal ball prediction for a key defensive recruiting target.

It was a busy weekend in State College as the Nittany Lions hosted their second official visit weekend for recruits and players already committed to the program. Unlike the first official visit event, there were more committed players on this trip than those who are still in the recruiting process.

If the second recruiting weekend follows the same results as the first one, Penn State should expect to pick up more commitments from players they are still recruiting.

247Sports’ Crystal Ball is predicting that the Nittany Lions will land four-star edge rusher [autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag] after his visit over the weekend. Williams is a premier pass rusher from the state of Pennsylvania who is nationally ranked as the 24th-best player at his position and the seventh overall player in Pennsylvania.

Williams is listed at 6’3″ and 215 pounds and is one of the top targets for Penn State which still has yet to pick a school.

On Saturday, 247Sports’ National Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohd, put his Crystal Ball prediction in that had Penn State landing the four-star edge rusher. Dohd has gotten all 34 of his predictions for the 2024 class correctly. The Director of Football Recruiting at 247Sports, Steve Wiltfong, followed Dohd’s prediction with his own that has Williams going to Penn State. Wiltfong is 154-155 on his predictions for the 2024 class.

This is an excellent sign for [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] and his staff. Franklin has repeatedly stated the importance of keeping top talent in the state of Pennsylvania and getting them to sign with Penn State.

There has been no official commitment date set by Williams, but the recruiting analysts think that Penn State will be adding another edge rusher to their already loaded 2024 recruiting class.

Crystal ball pick favors Penn State for 2024 four-star edge rusher

Recruiting insider predicts Penn State will win this four-star commitment over Notre Dame.

Penn State is coming off a major recruiting weekend that resulted in three commitments in one day, and there could be more good news on the horizon for the Class of 2024 recruiting efforts. A fresh crystal ball prediction cast on 247Sports predicts Penn State to be the favorite to land the commitment of four-star edge rusher Mylachi Williams, one of the top players in the state.

Williams appears to be down to two schools as his top choices with Penn State and Notre Dame each getting a scheduled visit in the next two weekends. Williams is scheduled to visit Penn State this weekend and then make a trip to Notre Dame’s campus the next weekend.

Ahead of those official visits came a crystal ball prediction from Tyler Calvaruso of Lions247. This prediction is notable because the Penn State recruiting insider has accurately predicted 16 of his 17 crystal ball predictions in this recruiting cycle alone, including a perfect 12-for-12 on his picks favoring Penn State. If his streak continues, then Penn State could be adding another four-star edge rusher to the program soon enough.

Williams, who plays high school football for Monsignor Bonner in Drexel Hill, is a 6′-3″ 215-lb edge rusher. He is rated as a four-star recruit by the 247Sports composite ranking and is ranked as the seventh-best player overall in Pennsylvania. That is enough to make him a major recruiting target for James Franklin and his staff. New defensive line coach Deion Barnes is heading up the recruiting efforts for Penn State in pursuit of Williams.

Williams received an offer from Penn State earlier this year after attending a junior day event in January. He also made an unofficial visit to Penn State in March after accumulating a number of offers from Power 5 programs across the country including Michigan, USC, Colorado, Nebraska, and more. Notre Dame extended an offer in February.

We’ll keep a close eye on the recruiting journey of Williams and see if he decides to stay closer to home with the Nittany Lions or pack his bags for South Bend when all is said and done.
