Ohio State football still high in ESPN’s SP+ preseason ratings despite turnover

ESPN has released its very early preseason SP+ preseason college football rankings. Where does it have Ohio State pegged for this fall?

We’ve heard it before. At a place like Ohio State, you don’t rebuild, you reload. After four-straight Big Ten championships and a slew of players being sent to the NFL on a yearly basis, that couldn’t be more true in Columbus. In fact, you can go way back in history and see that more often than not, the Buckeyes are able to compete for trophies and trinkets no matter what’s coming back.

Further proof (if that’s what you want to call it), is the preseason SP+ rankings that ESPN just unveiled. Ohio State loses Justin Fields, Trey Sermon, a couple of members of the offensive line, and its entire starting linebacking corps, yet is still rated very highly in the predictive formula for results on the field resident beautiful mind guru Bill Connelly uses.

We’ll spoil the main surprise and tell you that no, the Buckeyes are not rated No. 1 when considering things like returning production, recent recruiting, and recent history, but they are still pretty high on the list. In fact, Ohio State is No. 4 behind just Alabama, Clemson, and Oklahoma. What else is new?

Here is how the top 25 looks like …

Wisconsin cracks the top 10 in ESPN’s way-too-early SP+ projections

After the Wisconsin Badgers throttled Illinois 45-7 in Week 1 of the 2020 football season, it appeared they would return to the Big Ten

Nobody would deny that the Wisconsin Badgers’ 2020 football season did not live up to expectations. Especially after the team throttled Illinois 45-7 in Week 1, it appeared they would return to the Big Ten title game and be a longshot to make the College Football Playoff.

We all know what happened next, with the program experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak and three straight losses against Northwestern, Indiana and Iowa respectively.

The two-game win streak to end the season was an inkling of positivity, though, and ESPN’s way-too-early SP+ projections for the 2021 season completely agree.

With the Ohio State Buckeyes understandably ranked at No. 4, the Wisconsin Badgers in at No. 9 are the only other Big Ten team in the top-10 of the ranking.

Specifically, ESPN’s Bill Connelly’s rankings give the team the No. 36-ranked offense in the country and the No. 2-ranked defense.

A lot will change before the 2021 college football season kicks off including depth chart moves, possible injuries and under-the-radar players emerging into significant roles.

But with Wisconsin retaining Jim Leonhard as defensive coordinator, Jack Sanborn at inside linebacker, Jake Ferguson at tight end, Graham Mertz at quarterback and the program welcoming in their best recruiting class of all time, it makes sense why their outlook is a positive one.

Michigan State continues fall down ESPN’s SP+ College Football Rankings, now no. 40 after U of M loss

Michigan State fell another five spots in the ESPN SP+ College Football Rankings after receiving a beatdown at the hands of Michigan.

Michigan State Football hasn’t won a football game since late September and their poor play has led to their continued fall from grace in the eyes of the ESPN SP+ College Football Rankings. After their big loss to Michigan on Saturday, they fell five spots down to number 40 overall.

Their defense, which is still respected in the rankings, has finally started to slip and is now ranked down at number 17. The offense is rightfully ranked down at number 84 and perhaps the biggest disappointment of the season is the special teams unit, which is now ranked at 111th out of 130 teams due to continued struggles on both punts and field goals.

Michigan State will try to rebound this Saturday against Rutgers.
