Jackson Arnold and Oklahoma’s 2023 commits stand out on Friday Night

Oklahoma’s 2023 recruiting class stood out this week with several big performances across the country.

The Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class had another big week under the lights to further excite the Oklahoma fan base. The top five recruiting class has players making cases for bumps in their star status but more importantly look like guys who will be playmakers in Norman.

Five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold had another big night for Denton Guyer. Arnold and his Denton Guyer teammates continued their undefeated season with a 62-7 win over Braswell on Friday night.

In other Texas high school football action, Colton Vasek did what Colton Vasek does, ruining the evening for Dripping Springs offensive linemen.

But Arnold and Vasek weren’t the only Oklahoma commits to have big games this week. Two of the more underrated players in the recruiting class, Erik McCarty and Kade McIntyre, were dominant for their squads leading to big nights in Oklahoma and Nebraska high school football action.

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from the week.

Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class commitment tracker

Oklahoma Sooners 2023 commitment tracker

The Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class is coming together quite nicely after a strong June, July, and start to August.

Since June 1, the Sooners have added 15 commitments. They added nine commitments in July, with eight rated as four-star players. Also, in July, quarterback Jackson Arnold saw his stock rise after winning the Elite 11 MVP award, earning five-star status.

Their 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings and No. 9 according to the On3 Consensus.

Oklahoma is still awaiting decisions from five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag], four-star cornerback [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag], four-star athlete [autotag]Malachi Coleman[/autotag], and four-star wide receiver [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag]. With those dominoes still to fall, the Sooners could see their class push into the top three by national signing day.

While we await the next commitment to the 2023 recruiting class, here’s a look at who’s locked in and where they rank in the 247Sports composite and the On3 consensus rankings.

Top prospects in the Sooner State and where they’re headed in 2023

Where are the top Oklahoma prospects in the 2023 class headed?

The state of Oklahoma has some top-notch talent in the class of 2023. The Oklahoma Sooners have a commitment from 2022 Oklahoma Player of the Year Erik McCarty and are trending in a positive direction for the No. 2 player in the state, [autotag]Jacobe Johnson[/autotag].

They made serious plays for others in the top five of 247Sports top prospects in the state, but for one reason or another, those players decided to try their hand with another Power Five program.

Bai Jobe, the No. 1 player in the state, committed to Michigan State after spending his middle and high school years living in Norman. Oklahoma’s No. 3 player, Luke Hasz, decommitted from the Oklahoma Sooners after Lincoln Riley left for USC and hooked up with Sam Pittman and Arkansas to play his college ball. Dylan Hasz, his brother and the No. 17 player in the state in the 247Sports composite rankings is also going to Arkansas.

Athlete Micah Tease, a Tulsa native, also opted to head east with Hasz to play for the Razorbacks. Cole Adams, one of the top wide receivers in the state, opted to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Oklahoma State currently has the most commitments from in-state prospects with DL Jaedon Foreman and OL JaKobe Sanders pledge to play for Mike Gundy and the Cowboys. However, if and when the Sooners get a commitment from Jacobe Johnson, Oklahoma will have the edge with the higher rated in-state prospects.

The only two uncommited prospects in the top 18 in the state of Oklahoma, wide receiver Morgan Pearson and running back Rickey Hunt, don’t have offers from the Sooners. Pearson has an offer from Oklahoma State and both have offers from Iowa State.

Though we’re still months away from the early signing period or national signing day, here’s a look at where the top prospects in Oklahoma are headed, according to 247Sports.

Brent Venables recruiting philosophy is paying off for Oklahoma Sooners

In the midst of an incredible run on the recruiting trail in the 2023 cycle, it’s easy to see Brent Venables’ philosophy is paying off for the Okahoma Sooners.

If you haven’t seen it by now, the Oklahoma Sooners are red hot on the recruiting trail. It’s a far cry from the grave the national media and rival fans wanted to bury OU in during May.

Before June 1, the Sooners had four players committed to their 2023 recruiting class: [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag]. On the surface, and according to some, the Sooners were struggling to recruit. Appearances can be deceiving.

The reality was that [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his coaching staff were playing the long game. Preaching patience to players who were interested in committing to Oklahoma and encouraging those prospects to finish their recruiting process before making a commitment.

The main message is, “know that you know that you know that you know.” Venables doesn’t want players making a commitment and then continuing to shop around. That’s what changed with [autotag]Ashton Cozart[/autotag] and that’s something [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] is dealing with now as [autotag]Malachi Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Makai Lemon[/autotag] and [autotag]Zachariah Branch[/autotag] (their top three 2023 commits) are visiting [autotag]Texas A&M[/autotag] this weekend after being committed to the Trojans for some time. Nelson and Lemon have been committed since Riley left for USC in November.

If a player that’s committed to a school is going on visits to another, they’re not committed. Committed individuals don’t look elsewhere. In their career, in their marriage, in their relationships or in college football.

For years, the idea of a commitment has been softened in college football. By coaches and by players. Coaches will be committed to a player and a program one day and find a better opportunity the next. A player considered a “hard commit” by a recruiting service can flip at a moment’s notice. Throw in the new world order of name, image and likeness, and nothing seems certain until a player is signed.

That’s why Venables is so passionate about his philosophy. He wants players to take their visits. He wants them to explore all of their options before they commit. He wants the players that commit to the University of Oklahoma to understand the true meaning of the word. Because when a player commits, Oklahoma is committing in turn.

Venables, his coaching staff, and the program are throwing the full weight of the University of Oklahoma’s resources behind the prospect’s development both as a person and as a player. And all they’re asking for is the same commitment in return.

A player that commits to the University of Oklahoma has had a chance to go through their process, explore all of their options, and have time to consider them. They aren’t making an emotional decision based on their visit. They’re making an informed one — that will impact their college and professional careers.

And it’s a process that’s paying off for the Oklahoma Sooners. The 18 players (and counting) that have committed to the Sooners are all in. They’ve seen what’s out there, taken their visits and decided Oklahoma was the best place for them. It makes it more likely a player will stick and sign with the Sooners.

The process hasn’t hindered OU one bit. Their 18 commits (and counting) have Oklahoma up to No. 6 in the team recruiting rankings with a chance to climb even higher with several blue-chip prospects still to decide.

Oklahoma has added 14 players since June 1 and nine players since July 1, including eight four-stars since June 15.

In the last six days, the Sooners have received commitments from four-star prospects [autotag]Jasiah Wagoner[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag].

The Sooners’ patience on the recruiting trail is putting them in a position to have one of the best classes the school has seen in the modern era of recruiting.

And to echo the sentiment from several 2023 commits, they aren’t done yet.

Oklahoma Sooners offer LSU commit DB Ryan Yaites from Denton Guyer

The Oklahoma Sooners offered defensive back and 2023 LSU commit Ryan Yaites out of Denton Guyer High School i Texas.

The Oklahoma Sooners missed out on safety Tyler Turner, who committed to Oregon this week, but that won’t slow down [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his defensive staff. Leaving nothing to chance, the Sooners have offered four-star defensive back [autotag]Ryan Yaites[/autotag] from Denton Guyer High School in Texas.

Yaites has been committed to LSU since the middle of April, but that won’t keep Venables and [autotag]Brandon Hall[/autotag] from pursuing the Texas product. Another thing to note is that Yaites is the high school teammate of Oklahoma’s five-star quarterback commit [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag].

ESPN, 247Sports Composite, and On3’s Consensus all consider Yaites a four-star defensive back prospect and he ranks as one of the top 100 players in the talent-rich state of Texas.

Yaites is a versatile defensive back prospect that lined up primarily as an outside cornerback for Guyer. He’s a bump-and-run corner that does a great job using his length and athleticism to challenge receivers at the catch point. Even when the WR has made the catch, Yaites shows a strong ability to rip the ball out to cause the incompletion. He’s a very good tackler who consistently wraps up and drives the ball carrier to the ground. In the run or screen game, he shows great discipline to set the edge and not let the ball carrier get to the boundary. Great eye discipline and ability to read the play allows him to go from cover player to run defender quickly, which helps him make plays in the run game.

If the Sooners were able to flip Ryan Yaites from LSU, it would be a huge win and another fantastic defensive prospect to add to [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag], and [autotag]Kade McIntyre[/autotag].

Consensus Top 50 prospect Derek Williams names Sooners in his final 8

The Oklahoma Sooners land in the top 8 for talented and highly-regarded four-star safety prospect Derek Williams.

Oklahoma is doing some things right on the recruiting trail and it has them in the mix for some of the nation’s best defensive prospects. The Sooners find themselves still in the mix for one of the best safeties in the country. Top 50 prospect Derek Williams listed the Sooners along with seven others in his final eight schools over the weekend.

Williams, a safety from the state of Louisiana lists Texas, Miami, Texas A&M, Clemson, Alabama, and his home state school of LSU in his final schools as well. While his list features a plethora of some of the biggest brands in college football, there is no clear-cut favorite. However, it would be wise to assume LSU will factor heavily as this recruitment winds down.

Oklahoma currently has two safeties committed in the class of 2023 in [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag] and three-star [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag], but with Spencer likely to slide down and play linebacker quite a bit pursuing Williams seems like a smart thing.

Williams attended Junior Day in March and if the Sooners can stay involved and work themselves into a spot to get an official visit, who knows where this recruitment can go. Ultimately, with such a long way until national signing day, the Sooners will have to continue to stay in the race and hope that their on-field efforts will sway Williams to consider what the Crimson and Cream can offer.

Oklahoma Sooners gain commitment from 2023 4-star WR Keyon Brown

The Oklahoma Sooners added another commitment to their 2023 recruiting class in 4-star wide receiver Keyon Brown.

The Oklahoma Sooners kicked June off with a bang, hosting [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag]’ first camp for high school athletes as the Sooners’ head coach. They’re hosting players from across the country for the ChampU Family BBQ this weekend and their efforts are already paying dividends.

The Sooners received a commitment from four-star wide receiver Keyon Brown out of Tallahassee, Fla.

According to Bob Przybylo of SoonerScoop.com, Brown was one of the players in attendance for Venables’ camp and stood out as one of the top performers.

Safe to say Brown impressed the coaching staff with his work in Norman this week. An offer and a commitment just days later and the Sooners have a wide receiver to add to their 2023 recruiting class.

The four-star wide receiver is the fifth commitment for the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2023 recruiting cycle. He joins [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag], and [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag].

Brown’s commitment comes just a couple of weeks after [autotag]Ashton Cozart[/autotag] flipped his pledge to the Oregon Ducks. The Sooners replaced one towering wide receiver in Cozart with another one in Brown.

The Florida product stands 6-3 and weighs in at 188 pounds according to 247Sports. Brown’s size and ability help give him the opportunity to be a standout on the outside for the Sooners.

Keyon Brown’s Recruiting Profile

How does Oklahoma stack up against the Big 12 in 247Sports team recruiting rankings as of June 1?

As the calendar flipped to June, how does Oklahoma stack up against the Big 12 in 247Sports updated team recruiting rankings for 2023?

This summer is bound to be an active one for the Oklahoma Sooners on the recruiting trail. With the ChampU BBQ coming to Norman this weekend, the Sooners look to make significant strides with their targets from the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Oklahoma’s class took a temporary hit with the flip of [autotag]Ashton Cozart[/autotag] to the Oregon Ducks, but with the additions of [autotag]Javian Hester[/autotag] and [autotag]L.V. Bunkley-Shelton[/autotag], they’ve got some wiggle room at wide receiver for the next couple of seasons. On the bright side, the flip allowed the Sooners to focus their attention on in-state prospect and four-star wide receiver Cole Adams.

With just four commitments in their 2023 recruiting cycle, the Sooners currently sit No. 39 overall and No. eight in the Big 12. [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag], and [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag] may not have five stars next to their name, but they were priority targets for the Oklahoma Sooners coaching staff. There’s a chance that each of these guys adds another star to their recruiting profile with strong senior seasons.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders currently lead the Big 12 in team recruiting rankings and are the No. 2 team in the country. While they’ve had a nice start to the 2023 cycle under new head coach Joey McGuire, they’ve also got 20 commitments in the class, so of course, they’re leading the Big 12. Baylor, the No. 2 team in the conference has just 10 players committed to the 2023 class.

Recruiting is a marathon and not a sprint. While teams may have jumped out to early leads for tops in the conference, the Oklahoma Sooners have a big summer ahead of themselves. But as of June 1, let’s take a look at where the Big 12 stands in 247Sports composite team recruiting rankings.

Flipped commitment, no problem for the Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class

The Oklahoma Sooners are still in

Anymore de-commitments and commitment flips are as much a part of the fabric of college football recruiting as the actual commitments. They’ve become so commonplace that it barely moves the needle for fanbases. At least Oklahoma’s.

The Sooners lost a good player in Ashton Cozart. Of that, there’s no doubt. A four-star player and the only skill-position player they had committed to the 2023 class.

It’s never good to lose a four-star commitment, but it isn’t a cause for concern. The Sooners have a long way to go to get to get to the 2023 national signing day. We saw the type of recruiting class [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his staff were able to put together in just two months on the job after the [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] departure.

The 2022 recruiting class fell as low as No. 28 in 247Sports team recruiting rankings before Venables and his staff got to work. After national signing day, the Sooners had risen back into the top 10 to No. 8. Imagine what they’ll be able to do in the next nine months before 2023 national signing day.

The Sooners still have rising stars in [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag], and [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag] in their recruiting class and the commitments will start rolling in this summer.

They’re in a great spot with wide receivers [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaquaize Pettaway[/autotag] in the 2023 class according to On3 Recruiting. Throw in all of the projections for dual-threat running back Dylan Edwards and Oklahoma will have some nice weapons coming to Norman in 2023. Throw in Javian Hester and LV Bunkley-Shelton and the Sooners have a couple of guys that will help this season and have several more years of eligibility down the road.

It’s still incredibly early in the recruiting cycle and the Sooners will be on the positive end of their own flips as well. They did in the 2022 recruiting class with Gracen Halton, R Mason Thomas, and Kevonte Henry, who they flipped from Power Five schools on national signing day.

Though they’re No. 37 in 247Sports team recruiting rankings, they, and the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 38, aren’t concerned about where they stand months before the early signing period and nine months from national signing day.

Recruiting is a marathon and not a sprint. A lot will change over the next nine months and the Oklahoma Sooners will be right where they want to be when they cross the finish line.

Oklahoma Sooners summer recruiting primer for the 2023 recruiting cycle

With the summer on the horizon, we took a look at the names to know as the Sooners look to make a push on the recruiting front for 2023.

Brent Venables and Co. are weeks removed from their first spring as a staff together. It was a successful one with no notable injuries and some standout performances across the board. All told, things went as well as they could’ve hoped considering the positive reviews from the media and recruits in attendance.

The spring game served as an eye-opener for recruits and gave the Oklahoma Sooners some significant momentum to ride as they head into the most crucial time of the year for recruiting. With spring ball done and the team going home to recharge before fall camp, the staff will be all in on recruiting. With that in mind, it’s time to map out the targets to watch as the 2023 class begins to materialize this summer.
