Lions blazing start dampened with an injury to Frank Ragnow

The Lions blazing start against the Saints was dampened with a leg injury to Frank Ragnow

The Lions were off to a fantastic start in New Orleans. Detroit raced out to a quick 21-0 lead on the Saints within the first quarter after some efficient offense and playmaking on defense.

Unfortunately, adversity struck. First, the Saints settled down a bit and quit making so many mistakes on both sides of the ball. They cracked the scoreboard with an impressive touchdown drive that exploited some poor coverage by the Lions safeties.

On the ensuing drive, the injury bug jumped up and bit the Lions in the paw. Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow was helped off the field after a run play with a lower leg injury. He appeared to get leg-whipped while blocking and then had his ankle bent awkwardly as he collapsed in a pileup.

The Lions quickly listed Ragnow as questionable to return with a knee injury. Graham Glasgow slid into the center spot, with rookie Colby Sorsdal replacing Glasgow at right guard.

Lions injury update: 6 players out to start Week 6 practices

Lions injury update: 6 players out to start Week 6 practices on Wednesday

The Detroit Lions held their first official practice for Week 6 on Wednesday. It was as notable for who wasn’t practicing as it was for prepping for this Sunday’s trip to Tampa Bay to play the Buccaneers.

Six players sat out with injuries. Two of those, CB Emmanuel Moseley and RB Zonovan Knight, were expected after they suffered injuries in the Week 5 win over the Panthers. Moseley will require surgery on his torn right ACL, while Knight left the game with what looked like a serious left arm injury.

Starting left guard Jonah Jackson did not practice. He suffered what is believed to be a high ankle sprain against Carolina.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring), defensive back Brian Branch (ankle) and tight end James Mitchell (hamstring) all sat out as well. All three missed Sunday’s game, too.

Head coach Dan Campbell was optimistic about the chances for Gibbs and Branch to play in Tampa, less so with Mitchell.

“Yeah, we’ll see. He’s day-to-day,” Campbell said of Gibbs. “There’s a number of these guys. He and Branch are day-to-day.”

Wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown (abdomen) and left tackle Taylor Decker (ankle) were both limited participants. Cornerback Khalil Dorsey was a full participant as he preps to return from injured reserve.

Campbell added this about St. Brown,

“I feel a lot better about (St. Brown) Saint. I think Saint will be out there practicing, should be a little bit. But we just have to take it day-to-day.”

One positive note: no sign of safety Kerby Joseph on the injury report after he was questionable for Week 5. He was a full participant.

Lions waive RB Jermar Jefferson with an injury settlement

Jefferson was previously waived with an injury and was on the Lions I.R. list

Jermar Jefferson’s time with the Detroit Lions has come to another end, and this time it appears permanent. The Lions and Jefferson agreed to an injury settlement, with the running back now waived from Detroit’s injured reserve list.

The 2021 seventh-round pick started out training camp well but couldn’t sustain the early momentum, and an injury ended any real chance of Jefferson making the team. He is now free to sign with any other NFL team.

Jefferson reverted to Detroit’s injured reserve when the third-year RB went unclaimed on the NFL’s waiver wire last week. His injury has not been publicly disclosed.

There is an outside chance Jefferson could return to Detroit in 2023, but it’s extremely unlikely. He would have to wait at least three weeks beyond the end of the terms of the injury settlement before he can re-sign with the Lions. Jefferson played in seven games for Detroit, all in 2021, and gained 74 yards on 15 carries.

Emmanuel Moseley injury update: ‘It’s going to be a while’

Lions head coach Dan Campbell updated CB Emmanuel Moseley’s progress in returning from knee surgeries

Emmanuel Moseley remains sidelined from Detroit Lions practices. Head coach Dan Campbell didn’t offer any reason to believe the projectee starting cornerback will be ready for Week 1.

In his press conference before Monday’s practice, Campbell said of Moseley,

“It’s going to be a while.”

Moseley is recovering from a second knee surgery since tearing his ACL last October while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Signed as a free agent this spring, Moseley remains on the Lions’ PUP list.

The 27-year-old was ahead of schedule early on, but Moseley suffered a setback that required an additional minor surgery. He is at practices but not participating or even doing light running on the side with trainers, as most players who are close to returning often do.

Campbell did not provide a timetable. Last week, Moseley offered some optimism that he would be ready for Week 1, but those hopes seem fleeting after Campbell’s latest update.

The Lions are bringing back CB Saivion Smith after his scary neck injury

Smith left last season’s loss to the Patriots in an ambulance with a scary neck injury

After one of the scariest injury situations in the NFL in years, it sure appeared as if Saivion Smith’s career would be over. The Lions cornerback suffered a severe neck injury in the team’s Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots last October, leaving the field in an ambulance.

Smith became a free agent after the season ended with him on injured reserve. However, Smith will once again try to play in the NFL and he’ll do so in Detroit.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Lions are signing Smith to a new contract. The 25-year-old had surgery to repair a disc issue in his neck and has been cleared to return to football.

If he’s able to regain his form, Smith brings experienced depth to the CB corps. He was one of the team’s top players in training camp and preseason last summer and earned his start vs. New England.

Tracy Walker is looking good in his rehab from Achilles surgery

Lions safety Tracy Walker showed off his progress in recovering from a torn Achilles four months after the injury

The Detroit Lions have a few question marks on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. One of those is at safety, where team captain Tracy Walker is coming off a major injury that wiped out most of his 2022 campaign.

Walker tore his Achilles on September 25th in the Lions’ Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The fifth-year vet was Detroit’s leading tackler in 2021 and was one of the few bright spots on the defense early in the season when he suffered the serious injury.

One day under four months out from the Achilles tear, Walker showed off his rehabilitation progress in a social media post.

He’s looking good enough to be encouraged that Walker could be ready to roll at the start of the 2023 season in September, if not earlier.

Lions sign Daryl Worley from practice squad, send Ifeatu Melifonwu to I.R.

Lions sign CB Daryl Worley from practice squad, send Ifeatu Melifonwu to I.R.

The Detroit Lions made another injury-related move in the secondary. Detroit signed veteran cornerback Daryl Worley from the practice squad to take the place of rookie CB Ifeatu Melinfownu, who was placed on injured reserve.

Melifonwu was injured in the second half of the Lions’ Monday night loss in Green Bay. he pulled up awkwardly after running down Packers WR Davante Adams on a deep pass route.

Worley joined the Lions practice squad last week. He was signed when Jeff Okudah went on I.R. for his Achilles injury suffered in Week 1. Melifonwu took over as the starter for Okudah.

Lions claim DT Daylon Mack off waivers in series of Sunday roster moves

Mack was a 5th-round pick by the Ravens in 2019

The Detroit Lions were busy working on the first day of August. The team announced on Sunday evening a series of roster moves, including the addition of defensive tackle Daylon Mack off waivers.

Mack was claimed off waivers from Baltimore, where he was a fifth-round pick by the Ravens in the 2019 NFL Draft. He played only nine special teams snaps in one game as a rookie.

In addition to the Mack acquisition, the Lions made a couple of internal status updates.

Austin Bryant was placed on the active/PUP list. The second-year EDGE missed most of his rookie campaign with a torn pectoral muscle.

Defensive end Romeo Okwara is now on the active/non-football injury list.

Both Okwara and Bryant remain free to be activated at any point before the start of the season and do not count against the Lions’ roster cap.

The team also officially announced the signing of draft pick Jashon Cornell.
