POLL: Grade the Cardinals’ selection of CB Elijah Jones in Round 3

The Cardinals selected cornerback Elijah Jones with the 90th pick in the draft. What grade do you give the pick?

The Arizona Cardinals had four picks in the fourth round, and for their fourth pick, the 90th in the draft, they selected Boston College cornerback Elijah Jones.

Jones is older, having spent six years in college. He missed the final four games of last season for personal reasons. He is long at 6-1 1/2 and athletic.

He had great on-ball production, too. In nine games last season, he picked off five passes and broke up 13. Over the last two seasons, he had seven interceptions and 28 pass breakups.

What do you think of the pick?

Cardinals double up at CB on Day 2, select Elijah Jones 90th overall

Jones is long, athletic and great at making plays on the ball.

The Arizona Cardinals ended up using all four of their third-round picks on Day 2 of the NFL draft.

Using the 90th pick of the draft, they selected cornerback Elijah Jones out of Boston College, the second cornerback pick the Cardinals made on Day 2 after selecting Max Melton in the second round.

Jones is long and athletic, and his on-ball production is incredible.

He had five interceptions last season in only nine games, missing the final four with a non-injury issue. He had 28 passes defensed over the last two seasons in 20 games.

He is almost 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds. He is already 24 years old.

He ran the 40 in 4.44 seconds at the combine and posted a 42.5-inch vertical leap and 131-inch broad jump.

NFL Draft: Boston College CB Elijah Jones named ‘Day 3 fit’ for Colts

PFF named Boston College cornerback Elijah Jones as a ‘Day 3 fit’ for the Colts in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Gordon McGuinness of PFF named Boston College cornerback Elijah Jones as a ‘Day 3 fit’ for the Colts in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Here is what McGuinness had to say about the pick:

“Jones had the best season of his college career in 2023, earning an 89.8 PFF coverage grade that ranked fifth among cornerbacks in this draft class. He surrendered only 13 catches and racked up 11 combined interceptions and pass breakups from 257 coverage snaps.”

Jones measures in at over 6-1 and weighs 185 pounds–a bit on the lighter side. He would record an elite Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 9.63, which inlcuded a 4.45-second 40-yard dash, along with elite vertical and broad jump numbers.

A bit of a late-bloomer in terms of production goes, Jones is a very experienced player, with over 2,700 career defensive snaps during his six-year playing career. Jones has also played 457 special teams snaps primarily across three different units as well.

Just about all of his playing time has come on the boundary, although he does have some brief slot experience. Jones allowed a career completion rate of 49.3 percent at 13.0 yards per catch with 30 pass breakups and seven interceptions.

In 2023 specifically, Jones was one of PFF’s highest-graded cover corners, surrendering a completion rate of only 32.5 percent with five interceptions and six pass breakups. He’s also been a mostly reliable tackler during his career.

For more on Jones, here is what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote in his pre-draft report:

“Scheme-dependent cornerback with excellent length and above-average ball skills to harass and overtake lesser receivers when it’s time to make the catch. Jones is a slender press-man corner with Cover 3 potential. His press is more irritating than disruptive, but he does a solid job of tracing routes and attacking throws for forced incompletions and interceptions. He can be beaten by route runners in off-man and can be late to open and chase vertical routes, creating long-ball opportunities. His long arms should help him compete against more muscular receivers when it’s time to stop the catch, but he won’t offer much in run support. Teams valuing ball production and length will move him up the board as a Day 2 prospect with CB3 upside.”

With ‘Cover-3 potential,’ as Zierlein put it, Jones can be a good fit for Gus Bradley’s defense, with his experience playing in a single-high heavy defensive system at Boston College. Jones will, however, have to continue to get more comfortable playing zone, in a league where that increasingly has become the norm.

Cornerback is one of the bigger needs that the Colts have. They have young, talented depht on the roster, as GM Chris Ballard discussed in his pre-draft press conference – so I’m not sure how likely it is that they double-dip at the position in the draft – but added competition for that starting spot across from JuJu Brents could be valuable.

Given Jones’ fit, along with his size and athletic testing, he could be a good option for Ballard if he goes in a different direction during the early portion of the draft.

Jones is PFF’s 225th rated prospect overall and the 29th ranked cornerback in what is considered a fairly deep draft class.

Commanders to host Notre Dame cornerback on top 30 visit

The Commanders to host another cornerback on a pre-draft visit.

The Washington Commanders will soon host another cornerback on a top-30 visit. According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, Washington will host Notre Dame cornerback Cam Hart on a pre-draft visit.

Hart, like Elijah Jones of Boston College, who will also visit Washington, has some high-level traits. While neither are first-round prospects, both are long, athletic corners, something Washington head coach Dan Quinn has always liked.

Hart is 6-foot-3, 202 pounds, and ran the 40 in 4.5 seconds at the 2024 NFL combine. One game that will stand out to evaluators is Notre Dame’s game against Ohio State, where he matched up with Marvin Harrison Jr. and more than held his own. Harrison caught three passes for 32 yards on that day.

Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. have an outstanding history of developing defensive backs, with DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs being the most recent examples. It’s clear the Commanders are looking for help at cornerback in the draft and believe they can find one in the third round or later.

Commanders to host athletic Boston College cornerback on top 30 visit

Elijah Jones was first-team All-ACC in 2023 and had an impressive performance at the NFL combine.

The Washington Commanders can add another to their list of pre-draft visitors. According to Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report, the Commanders will host cornerback Elijah Jones on a top-30 visit.

Jones is an intriguing prospect. While he’s not considered one of the top cornerback prospects, he is of good size (6-foot-1 1/2) and has high-level traits. Jones ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds at the NFL combine and had a 42.5″ vertical, tied for first at his position.

He was a full-time starter at BC for his final three seasons and a first-team All-ACC selection in 2023. Jones had seven career interceptions, all coming in his final two years, including five in 2023.

General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn have discussed finding players with high-quality traits. Jones’ length and athleticism are an exciting combination. Additionally, he has plenty of playing experience in college. Quinn had no problem finding young cornerbacks to play early in Dallas over the past three seasons.

While the Commanders bringing in Jones for a visit indicates nothing about where he will land in next month’s NFL draft, it does show enough interest to use one of their 30 visits on him.
