Elie Okobo on the NBA: ‘I want to come back with a status of a great EuroLeague player’

Elie Okobo discussed playing in the EuroLeague, his experience in Phoenix, aiming for an NBA return, and plenty more.

After spending two years in Phoenix, and battling with injuries, Elie Okobo decided to sign a one-year deal overseas in his native country, France, for Tony Parker’s ASVEL. At 24, Okobo is playing for the first time in his career in Europe’s top-tier league, the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

Per Alberto De Roa’s advanced Global Rating statistic, Okobo is the third-best player in the competition behind former NBAers Nikola Mirotic and Edy Tavares. He’s also leading the EuroLeague in scoring at 19.6 ppg on 55.3 percent shooting (51.0 percent from beyond the arc).

Okobo discussed his great start to the season, the potential of an NBA return next summer, Parker as a mentor, and whether a top-tier EuroLeague team would make the NBA playoffs with HoopsHype.

Reggie Perry converted to two-way contract, Chris Chiozza waived

The Brooklyn Nets just signed Elie Okobo and Paul Eboua and they’re both already gone, having been waived Saturday.

For the second time this offseason, the Brooklyn Nets waived a played the day after he inked a deal with the team. Forward Paul Eboua was waived on Saturday, along with guard Elie Okobo. But, their departures came before Nets fans had a chance to get to know either player — unlike Chris Chiozza’s. The point guard was also waived Saturday after spending the majority of 2019-20 with the Nets, playing quite a bit for the team in the bubble and receiving a qualifying offer from Brooklyn before this season’s training camp.

As the Nets widdled their roster down to 17 players, Brooklyn elected to turn rookie Reggie Perry’s contract into a two-way deal. The 57th overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft has received praise from the like of DeAndre Jordan and Jeff Green, along with head coach Steve Nash after he appeared in the Nets’ preseason wins over the Washington Wizards and Boston Celtics.

Nets sign Elie Okobo, Kaiser Gates

The Brooklyn Nets’ training camp roster has increased back to 20 players with the two new additions announced on Wednesday.

The Brooklyn Nets signed free agent guard Elie Okobo and forward Kaiser Gates on Wednesday. According to Brian Lewis of the New York Post, both players were signed on Exhibit 10 deals. With Okobo and Kaiser’s signings, the Nets’ training camp roster has bumped back up to 20 players — Brooklyn’s training camp roster dipped down to 18 after the franchise requested waivers on guard Jordan Bowden and forward Nate Sestina, both of which went undrafted this year.

For the last two season, Okobo was a member of the Phoneix Suns organization, playing in 108 games at the NBA level. Last season, he played in 55 games, averaging four points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while playing in 13.1 minutes a night.

Gates played with the Windy City Bulls (Chicago) in 2018-19, then the Maine Red Claws (Boston) in 2019-20. In 36 games with Maine, the Xavier alum logged 12.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game while averaging 32.6 minutes a night. Gates has yet to log any minutes at the NBA level.
