Packers release tight end Eli Wolf, clearing spot on 90-man roster

The Packers roster is back down to 89 players after releasing TE Eli Wolf on Friday.

The Green Bay Packers opened up a spot on the 90-man roster by releasing tight end Eli Wolf on Friday, just four days before Matt LaFleur’s first training camp practice.

The Packers now have 89 players and the ability to add one to the roster before the start of training camp.

Wolf, 25, was claimed off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts on May 12. An undrafted free agent from Georgia, Wolf spent his first NFL season in Baltimore with the Ravens and half of last season on the practice squad of the Colts.

The Packers signed tight end Sal Cannella on Thursday, possibly pushing Wolf out the door in Green Bay. The roster now features seven total tight ends, including Cannella, who was an All-USFL player for the New Orleans Breakers.

Wolf would have had a very difficult time making the 53-man roster. The team has at least five tight ends they like: Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara, Tyler Davis and Dominique Dafney.

The Packers placed Tonyan and eight other players on the PUP list while placing three more on the non-football injury list on Friday.

Packers claim TE Eli Wolf off waivers from Colts

The Packers claimed tight end Eli Wolf off of waivers from the Colts on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers added to their tight end depth chart on Wednesday, claiming Eli Wolf (6-4, 238) off of waivers from the Indianapolis Colts.

Wolf, 25, went undrafted out of Georgia during the 2020 draft. He signed with the Baltimore Ravens and spent much of the 2020 season on Baltimore’s practice squad. In 2021, Wolf spent the final two months of the season on the Colts practice squad.

Indianapolis released Wolf on Tuesday.

A graduate transfer from Tennessee to Georgia, Wolf caught 13 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown in 14 games with the Bulldogs in 2019. He played in 27 games at Tennessee.

Wolf joins a tight end room in Green Bay featuring Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara, Tyler Davis, Dominique Dafney and Alize Mack. Robert Tonyan, who returned on a one-year deal, is recovering from a torn ACL. The Packers did not add a tight end during the draft or college free agency.

Ethan Wolf, Eli’s older brother, spent time on the Packers practice squad in both 2018 and 2019. The two played together at Tennessee.

To make room for Wolf on the 90-man roster, the Packers released receiver Chris Blair.

Colts officially sign OT Dennis Kelly among several roster moves

The Colts make the Dennis Kelly signing official, among other roster moves.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackle Dennis Kelly in addition to making several other roster moves, the team announced Tuesday.

The team also announced that linebacker Malik Jefferson and offensive tackle Shon Coleman were released while tight ends Farrod Green and Eli Wolf were waived from the 90-man roster.

Kelly will come in likely as a swing tackle for the Colts to provide depth on either side of the line.

With Jefferson released, it will be interesting to see how the Colts handle the backup MIKE position behind starter Bobby Okereke.

The additions of rookies Jelani Woods and Andrew Ogletree give the Colts enough depth to part ways with Green and Wolf.

Colts activate LB Malik Jefferson from COVID-19 list

The Colts activated LB Malik Jefferson from the COVID-19 list on Monday.

The Indianapolis Colts activated linebacker Malik Jefferson from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Monday.

Jefferson was placed on the reserve list last week when the Colts had a number of players get hit by the virus. Most of them have come back from the list since the league changed its protocols.

Jefferson has been on the practice squad for the entire season before being called up on Dec. 15.

The Colts also announced that quarterback James Morgan and tight end Eli Wolf have been restored to the practice squad from the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list.

Long snapper Kyle Nelson was released from the practice squad after filling in for starter Luke Rhodes, who was placed on the COVID-19 list just before the Week 17 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Colts activate LB Darius Leonard, two others from COVID-19 list

Colts activated LB Darius Leonard from the COVID-19 list.

The Indianapolis Colts activated linebacker Darius Leonard along with two others from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Thursday.

Under the new guidelines from the league, asymptomatic players can return after five days even if they’re unvaccinated. The Colts got five of their players back on Wednesday and should be getting more back throughout the week.

The Colts also added to players to the practice squad COVID-19 list. So let’s take a look at the roster moves the Colts made Thursday:

Colts sign Jahleel Addae, Eli Wolf to the practice squad

The Colts added S Jahleel Addae and TE Eli Wolf to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed safety Jahleel Addae and tight end Eli Wolf to the practice squad and released guard Zack Bailey from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Both Addae and Wolf were among the seven players the Colts hosted for a workout on Monday. Given their need for depth in the secondary, it makes sense they add a veteran to the practice squad.

Addae, 31, entered the league in 2013 as an undrafted free agent signing with the Chargers. He spent six seasons in San Diego (2013-2018) followed by stints with the Houston Texans (2019) and again with the Chargers (2020).

In 107 games (62 starts),  Addae has five interceptions, 26 passes defended and 18 tackles for loss. With Julian Blackmon on the injured reserve list with a torn Achilles, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Addae was moved up to the active roster soon.

Wolf, 23, signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020 with the Baltimore Ravens out of Georgia. He spent his rookie season on the practice squad and was waived by the Ravens in August.

Colts hold tryout for 7 players

Jahleel Addae and Damarious Randall were among the seven players who worked out for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for seven players on Monday, five of which were defensive backs and the other two players being tight ends, per the league’s transaction wire.

With injuries hitting the cornerback and safety rooms, it’s no surprise the Colts are working out defensive backs. They need to find all the depth they can after BoPete Keyes left with a hamstring injury and Xavier Rhodes played through a calf injury he suffered during pregame warmups.

The players that tried out for the Colts include:

  • S Jahleel Addae
  • TE Nick Eubanks
  • S Rashaan Gaulden
  • CB Isaiah Johnson
  • DB Damarious Randall
  • TE Eli Wolf

It will be interesting to see if any of these players are added to the practice squad as the Colts are currently running with a safety room led by Khari Willis and Andrew Sendejo.

Ravens waive three players, place two on injured reserve

Ravens waive three players, place two on injured reserve

The Baltimore Ravens have a huge amount of depth at multiple positions on their roster this offseason. While it’s a great to have a plethora of playmakers, it will make for some tough decisions over the coming weeks as rosters get trimmed down to 53 players.

The first roster deadline comes on Tuesday, as by August 17th at 4PM EST teams must trim their roster to 85 players. Baltimore took steps towards doing that, waiving three players while placing another two on injured reserve.

Adeoye and Wolf both spent the 2020 season on the Ravens’ practice squad, while Harris was brought in during the midway point of last season, playing in four games for the team. Marshall will spend his third straight season on injured reserve as he’s only played in three games during his three year NFL career. Dorsey got hurt in practice last week, and now won’t see the field during the 2021 season.

Baltimore also signed quarterback Kenji Bahar in the wake of Trace McSorley’s back injury, which will keep him out multiple weeks.

With the three players waived, two placed on injured reserve and one signed, the Ravens’ roster currently stands at 86 players, so it looks like they’ll have to make one more move before Tuesday’s deadline.

John Harbaugh ‘not too worried’ about Ravens’ tight end situation

The Baltimore Ravens have plenty of talent at the tight end position. John Harbaugh is excited about getting guys from the position in pads

The Baltimore Ravens have one of the best tight ends in the league in Mark Andrews. They also boast tight end Nick Boyle, who has developed into one of the best blocking tight ends in football. However, the team has plenty of other young talent at the position that will be competing for a roster spot for the upcoming 2021 season.

When asked about how the young tight ends currently on the team look so far such as Eli Wolf and Josh Oliver, head coach John Harbaugh had glowing things to say, and seemed excited to see how the battle at the position will play out over the course of the next few weeks.

“…Those are guys are flashing. They look really athletic. Let’s not forget Tony Poljan from Virginia there. You saw him make some catches today. He’s probably more of a guy that’s going to show up even more when the pads come on. So, I think all those guys have done exceptionally well. I cannot wait to see them again in pads and, like we said, play out, in terms of who plays the best in those situations. So, I’m not too worried about our tight end situation; they look good out there so far.”

Harbaugh singled out undrafted rookie Tony Poljan as a name he’s excited to see in pads, but players like Wolf, Oliver, Jacob Breeland, and even Eric Tomlinson could make some noise as they battle for the No. 3 tight end spot. Baltimore didn’t use three tight ends in 2020 nearly as much as they did in 2019, where it was a big part of their offense.

It feels like the team is gearing up to use three tight end sets to their advantage during the 2021 season. Putting multiple tight ends on the field at the same time can force defenses to put heavier personnel in, which can help the passing game, especially on play-action throws. The Ravens currently have a plethora of talent at tight end, and might have to make some tough decisions as they decide who will make the final 53-man roster.

Veteran tight end reportedly works out for Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens reportedly brought in veteran tight end Charles Clay for a visit late this week

The Baltimore Ravens have one of the best tight end duos in the entire NFL with Mark Andrews and Nick Boyle. However, the team might want to add another veteran playmaker at the position, as they’re looking at more options.

Adam Caplan of SiriusXM and Fox Sports Radio reported that Baltimore brought in veteran tight end Charles Clay for a visit late this week.

Clay has played for nine seasons in the NFL, last playing in 2019.  He’s accumulated 357 receptions for 3,868 yards and 24 touchdowns during his career. Clay is a versatile player, and can play in a H-back role, much like former Raven Kyle Juszczyk and fifth-round pick Ben Mason. If Baltimore believes that Clay could add another dimension to their offense, they could bring him into training camp and see if he can carve out a role for himself on the Ravens’ final 53-man roster.

The Ravens currently have a lot of other tight ends vying for a roster spot, including Josh Oliver, Eric Tomlinson, Jacob Breeland and Eli Wolf. Clay would compete with those players and others if signed by Baltimore.
