Texans activate DT Eli Ankou, release RB C.J. Prosise

The Houston Texans have activated DT Eli Ankou from the exempt/commissioner permission list and released RB C.J. Prosise.

Talent evaluation is a never-ending task for the Houston Texans.

The 1-6 club announced Monday they have activated defensive tackle Eli Ankou from the exempt/commissioner permission list.

To make room for Ankou on the active roster, the Texans released running back C.J. Prosise.

Prosise was active in six of his games with the Texans this season. In Week 3’s 28-21 loss at the Pittsburgh Steelers, Prosise carried once for a yard as part of his two snaps on offense that game. For the season, Prosise has played five offensive snaps and 70 special teams snaps.

Ankou is a 6-3, 325-pound interior defensive lineman who provides the Texans with another body they can plug inside to find answers to stopping the run. Ankou went to camp with the Texans in 2017 as an undrafted free agent, but was released as the end of preseason.

Texans sign DT Eli Ankou off waivers from the Colts

The Houston Texans have claimed defensive tackle Eli Ankou off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts.

The Houston Texans claim a defensive tackle off waivers Monday.

The club announced they have claimed Eli Ankou off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts. The Texans also placed Ankou on the exempt/commissioner permission list.

Ankou has experience with the Texans. Houston signed the former UCLA Bruin as an undrafted free agent in 2017. The Texans waived Ankou at the end of that preseason, and he caught on with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In Jacksonville, Ankou played 11 games, colectign 1.6 sacks, 19 tackles, a tackle for loss, and two quarterback hits through the 2018 season.

In 2019, Ankou played for the Cleveland Browns, starting in two games of his nine played.  The 6-3, 325-pound defensive tackle recorded seven tackles and a tackle for loss.

The Browns waived Ankou at the end of training camp in 2020 with the Colts claiming him off waivers on Sept. 7. Ankou was not active for the first five weeks of the season and was waived on Oct. 17.

Texans claim DT Eli Aknou off waivers from Colts

Eli Ankou heads to the Texans.

The Indianapolis Colts waived defensive tackle Eli Ankou on Saturday before their Week 6 game, and he was claimed by the Houston Texans on Monday, per the league’s transaction wire.

The Colts originally claimed Ankou off of waivers from the Cleveland Browns following the league-wide roster cuts in September. Ankou had a strong showing at training camp with the Browns but never saw the field with the Colts.

Ankou was a healthy scratch in each of the team’s first five games until he was waived on Saturday. With Grover Stewart emerging as a phenomenal run-stopper and the Colts getting back Sheldon Day to go along with Taylor Stallworth, they had enough depth to take the chance at waiving Ankou.

Ankou has appeared in 20 career games recording 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss.

Colts place TE Trey Burton on IR

Trey Burton begins 2020 on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts placed tight end Trey Burton on the injured reserve list and claimed defensive tackle Eli Ankou off of the waiver wire from the Browns, the team announced Monday.

Ballard told reporters on Sunday that they are still monitoring the situation ahead of the team’s Week 1 opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, it seems the team believes the injury is more serious than a few weeks.

“We’re still working through it. I can’t say yay or nay yet. We’ll know more in the next couple days,” Ballard said. “We’re just kind of monitoring – seeing where he’s at and seeing what the best course of action is here, whether it’s going to be two or three weeks. We’re working through it.”

As the tight end room struggles with depth, the Colts are likely to lean on Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox to begin the season. They also claimed tight end Noah Togiai from the Eagles following cut-down day. He comes from a similar system to that of Reich’s, which should make his transition smoother. That said, he just joined the offense as the move tight end.

The decision is interesting for the Colts because as Burton goes on the injured reserve list, he would be forced to miss only the first three weeks of the season. That differs from years past where a player on IR before Week 1 would be out for at least eight weeks.

That said, soft-tissue injuries at this time of year aren’t ideal and if he’s not fully healed by the time he comes back from IR, there’s a high chance of re-injury.

Burton figured to be a relatively big part of the passing offense but will now spend the first three weeks of the season healing his calf with the potential of missing more time if it doesn’t get right by the time he’s set to return in Week 4.

Colts claim DT Eli Ankou off waivers from Browns

Colts add to the D-line.

The Indianapolis Colts claimed defensive tackle Eli Ankou off of the waiver wire from the Cleveland Browns on Monday.

Always on the lookout for additions to their team, the Colts stay active on the waiver wire. Ankou will likely slide into the one-technique defensive tackle position behind Grover Stewart and alongside Taylor Stallworth.

This was first reported by Jake Trotter of ESPN.

With Sheldon Day to miss some time on the injured reserve list due to a knee injury, the Colts are slim at depth at the one-technique. Ankou shined during Browns training camp as the team was hoping to bring him back to the practice squad had he cleared waivers.

The Colts will have to make room for Ankou as the team was already at its 53-man limit on the roster so it will be interesting to see what Indy does as a corresponding move.

Report: Colts claim DT Eli Ankou off waivers from the Browns

Ankou was waived when the Browns claimed DT Vincent Taylor after initially making the 53-man roster

Eli Ankou made the Cleveland Browns 53-man roster after the initial cutdowns on the back of a strong training camp. The Browns cut him on Sunday however, claiming Vincent Taylor at DT and exposing Ankou to waivers.

Despite the Browns keeping an open spot on the 16-man practice squad for Ankou, the plans to keep Ankou have been dashed. The Indianapolis Colts claimed Ankou off waivers on Monday, per Jake Trotter of ESPN. The move has yet to be officially announced on the NFL’s transaction log.

Ankou thrived in training camp at disrupting passing lanes and looked effective at plugging holes in the run game. The Canadian will now help bolster a Colts defense that just lost DT Sheldon Day to injured reserve.

Browns waive TE Pharaoh Brown and DT Eli Ankou

Browns waive TE Pharaoh Brown and DT Eli Ankou to make room for Joe Jackson and Vincent Taylor

With the additions of Joe Jackson and Vincent Taylor, the Cleveland Browns had to clear out two roster spots to accommodate them on the 53-man roster. As a result, the jubilation of making the Browns comes crashing down for TE Pharaoh Brown and DT Eli Ankou.

The Browns waived Brown and Ankou on Sunday to create space for the waiver claims acquired from other team’s cutdowns.

Waiving Brown takes the team back down to four tight ends: Austin Hooper, David Njoku, Harrison Bryant and Stephen Carlson. Brown played in nine games, starting six, for the Browns in 2019. He caught two passes for 27 yards as more of a blocking specialist.

Ankou was one of the pleasant stories of training camp, playing his way onto the initial 53-man roster and even getting some first-team reps. In nine games with the team in 2019, Ankou notched seven tackles.

Both remain practice squad eligible if they clear the next round of waivers.

Olivier Vernon out vs. Dolphins, Browns will be without 3 DL starters

Chad Thomas, Chris Smith and Devaroe Lawrence will be starting vs. the Dolphins

The Cleveland Browns defensive line will look a lot different than a few weeks ago. Starting end Olivier Vernon will miss his third straight game with a knee injury. The Browns ruled out the veteran EDGE on Friday.

With fellow DE Myles Garrett and DT Larry Ogunjobi suspended for their personal fouls and ejections in Week 11, the Browns defensive line will feature just one regular starter, DT Sheldon Richardson.

Vernon has not even practiced since injuring his knee at the end of the team’s Week 9 loss in Denver.

Chad Thomas and Chris Smith will take over as the starting ends, while Devaroe Lawrence will assume Ogunjobi’s spot along the interior. The depth behind the replacement starters is scant, with Eli Ankou inside and recently signed Bryan Cox Jr. on the edge.
