Texans work out former Cowboys, Browns DE Joe Jackson and 3 others

The Houston Texans worked out former Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns DE Joe Jackson and three other free agents.

The Houston Texans are continuing to evaluate free agent talent as they gear up for their preseason opener with the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 13.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans worked out defensive ends Joe Jackson and Bryan Cox along with tight ends Marcus Baugh and David Wells.

Jackson, a Dallas Cowboys 2019 fifth-round pick, also played for the Cleveland Browns from 2020-21. He was signed to their practice squad amid their playoff run earlier this year, but was not retained at the end of the season. The Carolina Panthers signed Jackson to a reserve/future contract but released him midway through organized team activities in late May.

Cox has been with the Buffalo Bills since 2020. An Achilles tear scuttled his 2021 campaign before it could begin, and he signed with the Indianapolis Colts for a month in mid-June this year before being released. Cox has also played for the Panthers from 2017-19 and also the Browns (2019).

Baugh, a former Oakland Raiders 2018 undrafted free agent, has played for NFL and other pro football teams, including Carolina (2019), Washington (2020), and most recently the Michigan Panthers of the USFL.

Wells, a Cowboys 2018 undrafted free agent from San Diego State, has spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs (2018-19), New England Patriots (2020-21), Atlanta Falcons (2021), Colts (2021), and Arizona Cardinals (2021).

Panthers release former Cowboys draft pick

On Tuesday, the Panthers waived former Cowboys fifth-round draft pick Joe Jackson.

On Feb. 11, the Carolina Panthers signed defensive end Joe Jackson to a futures deal. 14 weeks later, his future with the team is now non-existent—at least for now.

As announced on Tuesday afternoon, following the second day of voluntary offseason team activities, Jackson was waived by the Panthers. This move leaves Carolina with 89 players on its current roster.

The 6-foot-4, 278-pound defender broke into the NFL as a fifth-round selection of the Dallas Cowboys back in 2019. His work at the University of Miami (Fla.) helped him get there, as he recorded 23.0 sacks and 35.5 tackles for a loss over his three years as a Hurricane.

Jackson went on to play in five games for the Cowboys during his rookie year, chalking up four tackles in 71 defensive snaps. He’d then move on to Cleveland Browns in 2020 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. Between those two stops, he totaled 21 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 15 games.

Joe Jackson adds a Rutgers football offer this week

Joe Jackson gets another ‘Power Five’ offer, this one from Rutgers football.

Three-star running back Joe Jackson added an offer from Rutgers football this week as the Scarlet Knights continue to send out offers to the class of 2023.

It was the second offer from a ‘Power Five’ program for Jackson, who also has an offer from Kansas State. His other offers include Alcorn State, Arkansas State and South Florida.

He is a 6-foot, 180-pound running back from Ridge Community High School (Davenport, FL). Last season, the class of 2023 running back and 1.011 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 151 carries.

He also had 15 receptions for 342 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. 247Sports ranks him as a three-star.

Ridge went 5-5 last season.

What is impressive about Jackson is his combination of size, strength and some good speed. He has the type of explosiveness that can leave defenders shoeless.

Jackson tweeted about the offer on Thursday night:

Rutgers already has a commitment from a Florida running back. Last month, three-star running back Christopher Johnson Jr.  gave a verbal to the program.

Rutgers currently has four commitments in their ‘CHOP 23’ class headlined by two top 10 players from New Jersey (four-star defensive lineman JaSire Peterson and three-star offensive lineman John Stone). Tree-star wide receiver Yazeed Haynes from Pennsylvania and the running back Johnson round-out a strong star to the recruiting cycle for the Scarlet Knights.

Panthers sign former Cowboys draft pick to futures deal

The Panthers inked 2019 fifth-round pick Joe Jackson to a reserve/future deal on Friday.

Friday really should’ve been a holiday for everyone in the Carolina Panthers organization considering the momentous news the night prior. Alas, they were still at work anyway.

As reported by team scribe Darin Gantt, the Panthers signed defensive end Joe Jackson to a reserve/future deal early this afternoon.

The 6-foot-4, 278-pounder was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. A Homestead, Fla. native and subsequent University of Miami Hurricane, he’d amass 23.0 sacks and 35.5 tackles for a loss over his three-year collegiate career.

Jackson played in just five games for the Cowboys in his rookie campaign, totaling four tackles in 71 defensive snaps. After being waived by Dallas just days prior to the 2020 regular season, he’d be claimed by the Cleveland Browns and went on to appear in three contests.

Most recently, as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, Jackson hit the field for 12 outings while collecting 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2021.

Tracking former Browns still playing in the NFL’s conference championship round

Here are the ex-Browns on the remaining four teams battling in the AFC and NFC Championship games

A year ago, the Cleveland Browns just missed out on advancing to the AFC Championship game. This year didn’t turn out nearly as well for a variety of factors, unfortunately.

There are still a few former Browns players still alive in the NFL’s final four this weekend. Some play key roles for the teams competing to advance to Super Bowl LVI, while others likely won’t see the field.

Here are the ex-Browns on the remaining four teams battling in the AFC and NFC Championship games

Chiefs sign former Browns DE Joe Jackson to practice squad

The #Chiefs have added another player to the practice squad, bringing their practice squad total to 15 players.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to round out the practice squad after releasing several players. This time they’ve added a promising defensive end who sacked Patrick Mahomes earlier this season.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Thursday, the Chiefs have signed DE Joe Jackson to the practice squad. A former fifth-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys by way of the University of Miami, Jackson was a very consistent player in college. In each of his three seasons at The U, Jackson had over 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

The 25-year-old spent just one season with the team that drafted him, playing just over 70 snaps with Dallas in 2019. He was released at the onset of the 2020 NFL season, which is when the Cleveland Browns claimed him. The 6-4 and 278-pound defensive end bounced back and forth between the practice squad and active roster in his two seasons in Cleveland.

Jackson appeared in 15 games with the Browns, managing 21 total tackles, three tackles for loss, three QB hits, one fumble recovery and 1.5 sacks. He played 10 snaps on defense during Cleveland’s Week 1 matchup with the Chiefs, recording one tackle and one sack during the game.

This is the type of player who can provide the Chiefs with depth throughout the playoffs. Should he stick around beyond the postseason, he’s also someone who could develop into a key rotational piece on the defensive line during the offseason.

After adding Jackson, along with DT Andrew Billings and OT Roderick Johnson, the practice squad in Kansas City has 15-of-16 spots filled for the postseason.

8 Browns practice squad players become free agents Monday

Eight players from the team’s practice squad did not come to an agreement on future/reserve deals and are now free agents:

The 2022 NFL offseason gets started quickly for some teams and some of their practice squad players. As we’ve covered, the team has added kept a number of players on future/reserve deals in the last couple of weeks.

A week ago, the team signed eight players to such deals including Alex Taylor, Johnny Stanton and Curtis Weaver. They followed that up with three others including Chris Blewitt the next day. Finally, Herb Miller was signed to his reserve/future deal.

Monday players from teams’ practice squads that had not signed a deal with their team had their contracts expire. For Cleveland, eight players became free agents:

  • DB Brian Allen
  • DB Adrian Colbert
  • DE Joe Jackson
  • RB John Kelly
  • RB Benny LeMay
  • DB Jovante Moffatt
  • RB Artavis Pierce
  • DB Tedric Thompson

Those eight are now able to sign future/reserve deals with any team in the league. Jackson and Moffatt played important snaps for the Browns down the stretch and could be looking for more than a future/reserve deal this offseason.

Browns activate Hunt & Conklin, waives two and elevates two

2 activated, 2 waived and 2 elevated. A lot going on for the Browns roster on Saturday. The team seems to be getting healthy at the right time:

The Cleveland Browns were highly active Saturday morning. As Kevin Stefanski shared yesterday, the team officially activated Kareem Hunt and Jack Conklin from the injured reserve.

Conklin will slide back into his starting right tackle spot while Hunt’s important role behind Nick Chubb and in the passing game is vital to the offense.

In corresponding moves, the team has waived OL Hjalte Froholdt and DE Joe Jackson to make room for Conklin and Hunt. Both players could return to the team’s practice squad if they clear waivers.

With Anthony Schwartz the lone player listed as out on the final injury report, the team has once again elevated JoJo Natson to help with kick returns. With Jackson waived, the team elevated DE Porter Gustin for the second week in a row to help on the edge. The team will also get Takk McKinley back after missing games with a groin injury.

Cleveland is as close to full health as they have been in many weeks going into Week 12 then have their bye week to continue healing up. Given the importance of their back-to-back games with the Ravens, on either side of their bye, health is coming at a very important time.
