Tyrann Mathieu has a ton of respect for Bijan Robinson: ‘He’s going to be special’

Tyrann Mathieu may play for the Saints, but he knows a quality opponent when he sees one. And he has a ton of respect for Falcons star Bijan Robinson:

Tyrann Mathieu takes a lot of pride in playing for his hometown New Orleans Saints, but he knows a quality rival when he sees one. And he’s eager to compete against Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson. Mathieu pointed to the second-year pro during a recent appearance on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast when taking stock of his opponents in the NFC South.

And Mathieu offered some lofty comparisons for Robinson and his unique skill set: “Man, he’s going to be special. Marshall Faulk, you know, Edgerrin James, you know what I mean? Like, LaDainian Tomlinson, you know? And I didn’t think the Falcons really used him as good as they should have last year, but, man, he’s going to be good. He’s going to be real good.”

Robinson proved to be a dangerous dual-threat running back in 2023. He ran 214 times for 976 rushing yards, scoring 4 touchdown runs, while being targeted 86 times as a receiver; he caught 58 passes for another 487 receiving yards and 4 more touchdown receptions. He’s one of five rookie running backs to have 900-plus rushing yards and 400-plus receiving yards as a rookie since 2010, and one of 16 to do so in the history of pro football. Mathieu knows his history — James (1999) and Faulk (1994) are both in that group. Tomlinson (2001) was 33 receiving yards shy of joining them.

Mathieu’s Saints have gone 3-1 against the Falcons in his two years on the team, and they were a foolish Derek Carr pick-six in scoring position from beating them in Atlanta last year. But he sees Robinson as someone who could be a problem in the years ahead.

Robinson broke out with his first multi-touchdown game as a rookie against the Saints in Week 11, scoring a 10-yard run and a 26-yard reception while totaling 123 yards from scrimmage. Mathieu and his teammates did a better job limiting his gains on the ground in the Week 18 rematch (Robinson ran 11 times for just 28 yards) but he took an early grab-and-go pass out of the backfield 71 yards for a touchdown. They adjusted, though, and he finished with 32 yards on his other 6 catches.

Don’t expect first-year Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson to make it as easy for them by splitting Robinson’s touches with other players. As Mathieu alluded to, former Atlanta head coach Arthur Smith was widely criticized for playing veterans like Tyler Allgeier and Cordarrelle Patterson ahead of the running back they drafted 8th overall. The Falcons are excited to have Kirk Cousins at quarterback after a couple of years in the desert, but they’ll be counting on Robinson to shoulder a heavy load in 2024.

PFF compares draft prospects to current, former Colts

Plenty of 2023 prospects compare to current and former Colts.

The 2023 NFL draft is less than two weeks away, and the Indianapolis Colts are working to solidify their big board ahead of the offseason’s biggest weekend.

As the draft approaches, Pro Football Focus handed out their player comparisons for the top 150 players in this year’s class, based on their own rankings. There were plenty of prospects who are being compared to both current and former players of the horseshoe.

It should be noted that comparisons are far from a perfect science and are meant to give an idea about a prospect’s play style or dominating trait rather than a projection of a career path.

Here’s a quick look at the draft comparables related to the Colts in the 2023 NFL draft:

Son of NFL Hall of Fame RB Edgerrin James commits to Cincinnati for basketball

The son of NFL Hall of Fame running back Edgerrin James has committed to Cinncinati’s basketball program.

The Cincinnati Bearcats have landed a commitment from Jizzle James, one of the top guards in the class of 2023, according to 247 Sports.

James (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) is a four-star point guard for Olympia (Fla.). He’s ranked No. 9 at his position and No. 53 nationally by his composite score.

Cincinnati won out over seven other schools with offers on the table, including Georgetown, NC State and Florida. The addition bumped the Bearcats up in On3’s 2023 recruiting class rankings to No. 27, just a fraction behind Kansas State, Providence and Louisville.

James is the son of Edgerrin James, who played running back for 11 years in the NFL, primarily with the Indianapolis Colts. James also played a few years for the Arizona Cardinals and his final season with the Seattle Seahawks. Altogether, He made four Pro Bowl teams and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Raiders: RB Jonathan Taylor

Colts RB Jonathan Taylor is the player of the game in the 23-20 loss to the Raiders.

In a tough and infuriating loss, the Indianapolis Colts (9-7) missed an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth, losing to the Las Vegas Raiders (9-7), 23-20.

While Frank Reich’s squad didn’t come away with the win, it was a historic afternoon for the second-year phenom running back Jonathan Taylor.

Taylor finished with 108 yards and a touchdown, eclipsing the 100-yard mark for the 10th time this season. In fact, this was the first game all year that Taylor reached triple digits rushing and the Colts did not come away with a win.

This game was also significant because Taylor broke the Colts’ single-season rushing record set by Edgerrin James in 2000. This is just another milestone in Jonathan Taylor’s young career and certainly not his last.

All is not lost. The Colts still control their own destiny and can get into the playoffs with a win next week in Jacksonville. If the Colts want to make a run in the postseason, they will need to keep feeding Jonathan Taylor and do a better job in the trenches.

Jonathan Taylor breaks Colts’ single-season rushing record

Jonathan Taylor set the single-season rushing record for the Colts.

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor continued his historic season on Sunday by setting a new single-season franchise record for rushing yards against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 17.

The second-year back needed 84 rushing yards to break the record previously held by Hall of Famer Edgerrin James (1,709) during the latter’s Pro Bowl campaign. With a nine-yard carry in the third quarter, Taylor passed James.

Taylor has been an unmovable force throughout the entire season for the Colts. He’s been the offense’s biggest playmaker. Whether it’s churning out physical five-yard runs or sealing games with long touchdowns, Taylor has been an incredible asset to the team.

His 17 rushing touchdowns are already a single-season franchise record for the Colts. And Taylor did that in a span of 15 games.

It has been a truly incredible season for Taylor, who has been both consistent and elite throughout the entire campaign.

Now, he’ll be etched into Colts’ lore by having the greatest season by a running back in franchise history.

Edgerrin James’ Hall of Fame enshrinement speech is a must watch

Colts legend Edgerrin James stole the show Saturday night with an incredible speech at his Hall of Fame enshrinement.

From gold teeth to a gold jacket. Former Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James was forever immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night in Canton.

James’ personality took a hold of the stage in Canton during his enshrinement speech, and it was an incredible showing. He touched on several topics including his family, the perceptions he’s had to deal with throughout his life, his football career and his determination to make an impact in society.

Watch the video below at the incredible speech James gave in Canton on Saturday night:

His closing message?

“Proudly represent the real you. Follow your dreams, aim high and create the life you want to live. And to all those who have been judged prematurely because of their appearance, the way they speak, where they come from and in the minds of many should be locked up in prison, I represent us.”

Edgerrin James explains why Jim Irsay will present him at HOF enshrinement

“Jim Irsay’s my man.” – Edgerrin James on why he chose Irsay to present his Hall of Fame enshrinement.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay will be the one to present former running back Edgerrin James at the latter’s Hall of Fame enshrinement in August.

James was inducted as a part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2020. However, the enshrinement ceremony was postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19. Now, James will be enshrined during the same weekend as Peyton Manning, and he knew right away who would be presenting him.

“Jim Irsay’s my man,” James told reporters Wednesday. “He’s always taken good care of me. Irsay has always been, like, super cool from Day 1. Even though I went to Arizona (as a free agent) the relationship remained the same. He’s an important person to myself and the relationship that we’ve built over the years. I have so much respect for Mr. Irsay and the organization, I thought it would only be right.”

James was inducted into the Colts’ Ring of Honor in 2012 and is currently the franchise leader in the major rushing categories.

The No. 4 overall pick from the 1999 NFL draft holds the Colts franchise records for career rushing yards (9,226), career rushing touchdowns (64), rushing yards per game average (96.1), most rushing yards in a single season (1,709) and most seasons with 1,000 rushing yards (5).

James is set to be enshrined in Canton on Aug. 7, which will be a big weekend that combines the 2020 and 2021 Hall of Fame classes.

Best to Wear Number Five? Notre Dame Legend Left Off List

Who is the best college football player to ever wear number five? Fox Sports asked but left a Notre Dame legend off their list of answers.

In their Cinco De Mayo celebration Tuesday, Fox Sports was asking who the best player to ever wear number five in college football was.  Some great nominees were on there including Reggie Bush, Christian McCaffrey and LaDanian Tomlinson in recent years.

Notre Dame even had a nomination in the form of Manti Te’o who wore jersey number five for the Fighting Irish between 2009-2012, finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting his senior year.

Looking at their list, sure, everyone is a rather modern player with both Edgerrin James and Donovan McNabb ending their college careers in 1998 being the oldest players listed.  They don’t however say a word about there being a year or era requirement to decide.

So, isn’t there a certain Heisman Trophy winner from Notre Dame that is missing from this list?

I get that Paul Hornung is considered by many to be among the most-overrated players in the history of the NFL.  When you hear his name plenty immediately argue against his bust being in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He’s also the only player to ever win a Heisman Trophy despite playing on a losing team, doing so in 1956.  The quarterback ran for all of 420 yards that season while throwing for 917 more with three touchdown passes, good for the second most total yards in the nation that season (1337).

Hornung beat out Johnny Majors of Tennessee and Tom MacDonald of Oklahoma, who actually received more first place votes that season.  However, isn’t it a little strange to have a number five from a school mentioned as the best to wear a number when the same school produced an actual Heisman winner?

Just a thought.

For the record – the correct answer is Reggie Bush, even if USC isn’t currently allowed to claim him.

The top 5 players to finish their career with the Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have employed many NFL legends in their final moments in the league. Here is a ranking of the top-five.

The Seattle Seahawks, perhaps more than any other franchise, have become the final landing spot for a myriad of the game’s greatest players.

The team’s recent acquisition of Greg Olsen, as well as last year’s Josh Gordon experiment, potentially added two more NFL greats to a long list of players who play out their final games in the Emerald City.

I decided to rank the elite NFL players who called it quits while in Seattle. This list does not include lifelong Seahawks, like Steve Largent and Walter Jones, or even Marshawn Lynch – who might have played his final down last season (although with Beast mode, you can never be sure).

Instead, this list will focus on players who spent one year (or in many cases, less than a year) in Seattle to shut the door on their extensive – often Hall of Fame worthy – careers.
