UNC snags 2-1 win on the road against No. 14 ECU

Diamond Heels catches a 2-1 win on the road against No. 14 East Carolina.

The Diamond Heels took care of business Wednesday night, outlasting Eastern Carolina in a pitching dual to win 2-1 and get back on track.

UNC picked up a much-needed win over the No. 14 Pirates after a rough ending in the loss against the Campbell Camels the night before. Usually led by their hitting, the Tar Heels counted on their pitching to pick up the win, with both teams failing to find their swing.

The game stayed at zero leading into the fourth inning until outfielder Vance Honeycutt homered to the left field for a 1-0 UNC lead. However, ECU answered back in the same inning to tie it up, continuing the sweats from the mound.

In the sixth inning, UNC was able to snag another run thanks to a fielder’s choice RBI by Hunter Stokely. That would be the last run scored of the game, giving the Tar Heels a 2-1 win over a notable opponent.

This game should serve as a massive boost of confidence for the Diamond Heels as they displayed a good fight on the road. Pitcher Dalton Pence picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing one hit in two innings. In addition, junior pitcher Connor Bovair played a significant role for the bullpen, allowing only three hits and one run in four innings.

The Diamond Heels will return on Tuesday to take on Gardner-Webb for another night of Bark at the Bosh.

Watch: 2022 highlights for undrafted Seahawks QB Holton Ahlers

Here are his 2022 highlights.

The Seahawks did not draft a quarterback again this year. However, they did add one after the draft was over. One of the 28 reported undrafted free agent signings for Seattle is Eastern Carolina quarterback Holton Ahlers.

Last season, Ahlers (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) threw for 3,708 yards, completing 67.2% of his passes. He posted 28 touchdown passes to go with five interceptions. Ahlers added another 182 yards and six touchdowns as a rusher. Here are his 2022 highlights.

For now Ahlers should project as the Seahawks’ practice squad QB behind Drew Lock and Geno Smith.

Seattle has also signed one of Ahlers’ teammates – ECU wide receiver C.J. Johnson, who’s considered one of the best undrafted free agents this year. Johnson (6-foot-2, 222 pounds) posted 67 catches, over 1,000 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns this past season.

2023 NFL draft: Seahawks met with ECU RB Keaton Mitchell

One name they have their eye on is Keaton Mitchell from ECU, who they had an official meeting with.

The Seahawks lost two of their running backs in free agency, with Rashaad Penny going to the Eagles and Travis Homer to the Bears. That means they will be in the market for at least one – possibly two – running back prospects in the 2023 NFL draft.

One name they have their eye on is Keaton Mitchell from ECU, who they had an official meeting with, per Justin Melo.

Mitchell ran for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in 33 games at ECU, averaging 6.5 yards per attempt. He added another 60 catches, 580 yards and three touchdowns as a receiver.

Mitchell’s size and agility make Darren Sproles a good pro comp. At the Scouting Combine, he measured in at 5-foot-8 and 179 pounds. He ran a 4.37 forty-yard dash and posted a 38″ vertical and a 10’6″ broad jump.

Here’s a look at his college highlight reel.

For now, Mitchell is projected to come off the board in the fifth round.
