LendingTree Bowl Prospect Preview: Eastern Michigan Eagles vs. Liberty Flames

LendingTree Bowl Prospect Preview: Eastern Michigan Eagles vs. Liberty Flames #ETOUGH #EXPLO21VE

Welcome to the first Saturday of bowl season and the college football Gods have graced us with six great contests. Personally I would have rather them space these bad boys out a little, but hey here we are.

The LendingTree Bowl pits the Eastern Michigan Eagles (7-5) of the MAC against the Liberty Flames (7-5), who are not affiliated with any conference. Despite the spread being slightly below double digits with Liberty favored, both teams are coming off of a loss and are hoping this win brings some positive off-season momentum.

Honestly though, we don’t care about that. We are going to dive into potential future Browns!

Michigan State football transfer Chase Kline is headed to Eastern Michigan

Chase Kline is headed to Eastern Michigan

Michigan State linebacker Chase Kline had made the decision to enter the transfer portal following the team’s win over Nebraska. Kline had seen his playing time decrease and by transferring before the fifth game of the season, he was able to preserve a year of eligibility.

Kline has since made the decision to transfer within the state of Michigan, as he will be heading to Ypsilanti to play for the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

In his MSU career, Kline appeared in 19 games getting 52 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Liberty vs Eastern Michigan LendingTree Bowl Preview

Both teams will be looking to get past rough finishes to end with something positive.

It was a massively disappointing season for a Liberty program that ripped through several ACC teams in 2020 before closing out with a victory over an unbeaten Coastal Carolina.

The 2021 version came into the year full of experience led by dynamic quarterback Malik Willis and a great running game, and it all fell flat as the season wore on.

It was a good team, but there were too many turnovers, too much inconsistency, and way too many penalties. The Flames lost their last three games by a combined score of 100-44, but the losses came against Ole Miss, Louisiana, and Army – three of the better teams on the slate.

Eastern Michigan couldn’t run, couldn’t stop the run, and like Liberty, was wildly inconsistent including losses in two of the last three games. However, unlike the Flames, there aren’t any flags – it was No. 1 in the nation in fewest penalties – and the team didn’t beat itself.

The offense had its moments and the passing game is okay, but there’s a big problem when the ground attack doesn’t work.

Eastern Michigan vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Is that really the Eastern Michigan running game?

The passing attack has been great throughout the season with the ground game along for the ride. In the stunning 22-21 win over Western Michigan two weeks ago, former UCF RB Jawon Hamilton ran for 187 yards as the team came up with a season-high 255 yards.

Central Michigan’s run D has been fine, but it gives up plenty of yards through the air. Eastern Michigan’s offense should be balanced, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Central Michigan O has been dominant.

The 39-38 loss to Northern Illinois was the killer for MAC West title hopes, but the Chippewas have won five of their other six games since early October with 200 yards both on the ground and through the air over the last two weeks.

Eastern Michigan doesn’t generate enough consistent pressure, the defense isn’t good on third downs, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan will close out with a bang, making a statement that it might just be the second-best team in the MAC if Northern Illinois goes on to win the MAC Championship.

Both teams are bowl eligible with solid seven-win seasons – NIU is currently the only other MAC team with seven or more wins – so the pressure is off. This is just for a little bit if in-state MAC pride.

Central Michigan’s offense will be more effective, but the Eastern Michigan passing attack will make this a whole lot of fun.

Western Michigan vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Western Michigan Will Win

Can Western Michigan finally get its season going?

Oh sure, its bowl eligible, but it needs to win this and beat Northern Illinois next week – and get a whole bunch of other stuff to happen – to have a shot at winning a piece of the MAC West title. More realistically, it needs a win to solidify one of the league’s more interesting bowls.

It’s been a rough run to come up with the same offensive performance for a few games in a row, and even last week it took something massive from the O to get by a bad Akron team.

The Broncos control the ball, the defense gets off the field, the pass rush is great, the offense is balanced enough to be unstoppable, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Western Michigan is 5-5 for a reason. The defense is giving up way too passing yards, it’s allowing too many drives to turn into points, and there’s a massive turnover problem with ten in the last five games.

Eastern Michigan hasn’t exactly been all that consistent, either, but the offense has found something that works.

The passing game has gone off over the last month with 325 yards or more in each of the last four games with the points coming in bunches for the MAC’s best offense in scoring and third down conversions.

Western Michigan does a whole lot of things right defensively, but the secondary doesn’t make enough big plays and it should give up over 200 yards getting off the bus.

What’s Going To Happen

Ready for weird? There’s actually a way for 3-7 Ohio to win the MAC East. It’s not going to happen, but it’s still possible if it keeps on winning. With that out of the way …

Get ready for a fun and wild shootout.

Eastern Michigan already lost to Northern Illinois so it basically needs a major miracle to get a part of a division title, but it’s bowl eligible, it’s fun, and it’s at home with a passing game that should be able to keep up with a Western Michigan offense that’s going to score and keep the pressure on for a full 60 minutes.

Ohio vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Has Ohio finally figured it out?

It’s a lost season for a totally underwhelming team, but it pushed Central Michigan, Buffalo, and Kent State hard before finally breaking through with a win over Miami University.

The team is still playing hard, the passing game is finally starting to work, and the defense …

The defense is along for the ride, and it was able to hold up just enough late last week.

Eastern Michigan’s defense doesn’t do much of anything against the run, there isn’t enough pressure in the backfield, and the offensive line isn’t anything special. The Bobcats should be able to hold up on the offensive front and control the tempo a wee bit, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Ohio’s defense doesn’t hold up against anyone.

It got bombed on by Miami University, it got ran on by Kent State, and it’s been way too inconsistent overall and bad at getting off the field. Eastern Michigan’s offense isn’t consistent and it can’t run, but it owns third downs with a passing attack that kicked it all into high gear.

Ben Bryant is turning into the best quarterback in the MAC – or at least in the discussion – with his third 300-yard day in five games. He’s been accurate, he’s hitting the deep passes, and the passing game should roll at will on an Ohio defense that doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush.

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan has already secured bowl eligibility, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

A whole slew of MAC teams will get to six wins and there won’t be enough spots. The Eagles have to keep picking up wins all while staying alive in the MAC West race.

Nothing Eastern Michigan ever does it all that easy, and the defense will give up enough points to make the offensive side keep having to work, but the Eagles will make it three straight wins with yet another impressive performance from the passing game.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Eastern Michigan vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Eagles are going to bomb away.

They’ve found something that works in QB Ben Bryant – the former Cincinnati Bearcat – and they’re going to stick with it.

He has hit close to 75% of his passes over the last few weeks and has been around the 70% mark on the year, keeping the mistakes to a minimum and doing a great job of pushing the ball deep.

The Toledo D might be among the best in the MAC, but the secondary has started to slip a little bit. After dominating for most of the year – outside of getting hit hard by Notre Dame – the Rockets have allowed over 200 passing yards in each of the last two games.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Toledo Will Win

The Toledo defense continues to be terrific.

Overall, the Rocket formula should work. It gets great D, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and there’s enough happening on the ground to control the tempo of the game.

There have been some some losses over the last few weeks – close defeats to Northern Illinois and Central Michigan – but run, keep trying to run, and hope that defense can come through.

Eastern Michigan has a strong, high-powered offense thanks to the passing attack, but forget about running the ball. The Eagle O was able to grind it out early this season, but everything stalled in a big, big way over the last month.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s this simple. Can the Eastern Michigan passing game do enough to screw up Toledo’s balance and defensive style.

The Rockets are coming off their best game of the season – a stunning blowout win over Western Michigan – but if they have to get into a shootout, there’s a problem.

But Eastern Michigan is having a hard times with teams that can run.

Toledo will get to 200 yards for the first time since early October, it’ll average over five yards per pop, and the defense won’t break enough after doing a lot of bending.

Eastern Michigan vs Bowling Green Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

There’s no running game to speak of, but the passing attack has been good enough to win with – now it has to win.

The Eagles are still in the mix for a bowl game if they can close strong, and it starts with Ben Bryant and that passing game that hit 300 yards in three of the last five games and should push a Bowling Green defense that’s used to giving up lots and lots of rushing yards.

There is no Falcon rushing attack to worry about, and the offense as a whole still can’t quite get it all going through the air, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Bowling Green Will Win

It’s a far, far more competitive Bowling Green team than it’s been in the recent past.

That’s not anything to take lightly – the Falcons are a tough out now, even if they’ve lost three straight.

The Eastern Michigan defense doesn’t do enough to consistently get into the backfield, and the offensive front isn’t coming through like it needs to.

There’s no push for a ground attack that hasn’t ben close to getting to 60 yards much less 100 over the last few weeks, and it struggles in pass protection.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Neither side does a whole lot to take the ball away, but Eastern Michigan should be just a wee bit more careful.

Bowling Green’s D hasn’t let games get out of hand, Eastern Michigan is Eastern Michigan – almost every MAC game with that team seems like it’s decided by a touchdown or less – and these two are just mediocre enough to make this an interesting fight.

Eastern Michigan will get just a bit more out of its passing game in the second half to get out alive.
