Ball State vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

Now that’s the defending MAC Champion team we’ve all been waiting for.

After getting rolled by Wyoming and losing to Toledo by ten, the Cardinals came up with a terrific victory over Army and followed it up by a huge 45-20 win over Western Michigan.

Win this, and the team is in the mix for the conference title chase again.

So what’s been the difference?

The Cardinals forced two takeaways in the first four games, they did a decent job against the Army ground game and came up with two interceptions, and forced four turnovers against Western Michigan.

But …

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Eastern Michigan doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes.

It turned it over twice in the loss to Northern Illinois, but for the most part there isn’t a problem with turnovers.

Ben Bryant and the passing game have kicked it in with close to 1,200 yards over the last three games with seven touchdown passes and just two picks. Ball State’s pass defense has been okay, but that’s mostly because teams are trying to run the ball.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are better when their respective rushing games are working. Eastern Michigan hasn’t been great against teams that try grinding it out, but Ball State has rushed for 101 yards over the last two games.

There won’t be a ton of takeaway, but the Cardinal defense will hold up well, the offense will be balanced, and the momentum will continue with a good road win.

Wisconsin plays SEC foe in latest USA TODAY bowl projections

The Badgers play an SEC opponent in the latest bowl projections from USA Today:

After the Wisconsin Badgers dominated the Eastern Michigan Eagles 34-7 on Saturday, the Badgers are now projected to play against the Mississippi(Ole Miss) Rebels in the Citrus Bowl by the latest bowl projections from USA Today.

Wisconsin has played in three Citrus Bowls, while it was named the Capital One Bowl from 2003-2014. The Badgers won their first two against Auburn and Arkansas in 2006 and 2007 but lost their latest Citrus Bowl to South Carolina in 2014. It should be noted that Wisconsin has never matched up against Ole Miss before.

After an upset loss from Ohio State to Oregon, the predicted College Football Playoff teams for this week are now Alabama, Oklahoma, Georgia and Oregon.

The Badgers will be off this week so there likely will not be much change in their bowl projections but they could be impacted by some major matchups happening around college football on Saturday.

Wisconsin football stays put in latest AFCA Coaches Poll

Wisconsin football stays put in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll:

Even after a dominant victory against MAC opponent, Eastern Michigan, Wisconsin football has stayed put at No. 17 in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA Today.

Although there were still some miscues on offense, the Badgers offensive line looked dominant allowing the running back trio to gash Eastern Michigan for huge chunks of yardage and three touchdowns. Besides the running game, Mertz had an efficient showing going 14-17 for 141 yards. The Badgers are looking much improved ahead of their bye week and matchup at Soldier Field in Chicago with Notre Dame.

Ohio State was the only Big Ten team to fall in this weeks’ poll eight spots to No. 11 after their upset loss to Oregon, while Iowa moved up five spots to No. 7 after their victory over Iowa State. Michigan moved from unranked up to No. 25, while Penn State moved up one spot to No. 12.

The top 10 for this week includes Alabama(1), Georgia(2), Oklahoma(3), Oregon(4), Texas A&M(5), Clemson(6), Iowa(7), Cincinnati(8), Florida(9) and Notre Dame(10).

Wisconsin will have a bye week this week but will be playing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Soldier Field on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11:00 a.m CST.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Eastern Michigan Eagles Offense 3 Things To Know

– The EMU offense was able to throw the ball – it led the MAC with 283 yards per game – but it struggled to consistently move the ball, the running game wasn’t great, and there weren’t a whole lot of long marches. Now the program needs to come up with a quarterback.

Mike Glass turned into a MAC star, rolling up over 3,000 yards with 24 touchdowns, but he’s done. Preston Hutchinson is a veteran backup who hit 75% of his throws for 462 yards and three scores in his limited work, but on the way is Southern Utah transfer Chris Helbig, a 6-4 bomber who could step in on Day One.

The receiving corps will be missing Arthur Jackson and Mathew Sexton, but leading target Quian Williams is back after catching 52 passes for 661 yards and a team-high six scores. Junior Dylan Drummond led the team with 55 catches as a short-range target, and senior TE Bryson Cannon is coming off a good first season – catching 20 passes with two scores – coming from the JUCO ranks.

There aren’t a slew of stars on the line, but there’s a whole lot of experience with four starters expected to return – all of them underclassmen last season. The pass protection was strong, but the line didn’t do a ton for the running game. There’s good depth to work into the mix, too. Now the team needs to find someone to run the ball.

Leading rusher Shaq Vann is done after running for 715 yards. Senior Willie Parker is a smallish speedster who got in a little work, but he only ran for 142 yards and two scores. After Parker the Eagles will rely on the recruiting class to find more help.

College football fans were in awe of the ref’s dramatic flop in the Quick Lane Bowl

Fans were in awe of this ref’s apparent flop.

Eastern Michigan quarterback Mike Glass was ejected with 10 seconds left in something that is called the Quick Lane Bowl for throwing punches/slaps, which was absolutely the right call by the refs because you just can’t go around punching in people in the head, which Glass clearly did.

A ref got caught up in Glass’ second punch attempt and the guy in the striped shirt went falling to the ground pretty dramatically.

Now, you can’t punch opponents but you definitely can’t punch referees. Ever. Just can’t happen.

Glass’ open right hand did catch a little of bit of the referee on this shot but it didn’t appear to warrant such a wild collapse to the ground.

First, here’s the whole sequence for which Glass was properly thrown out of the game:

Now here’s the ref’s flop:

I’m obviously glad he’s OK and again, you just can’t go around punching people, especially referees in a game that you’re playing in, but man, that fall was something.

Glass felt badly about it after the game:

And Twitter had reactions:
