Notre Dame women’s basketball star is ACC Player of the Week again

She is so good.

Winning ACC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week is becoming the norm for Notre Dame star [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag]. After wins during the past week over UConn and Eastern Michigan in which she excelled, she won the honor for the second this season and an Irish record sixth time overall.

After nearly achieving a triple-double of 29 points, which included six 3-pointers, 10 rebounds and eight assists against the Huskies, she was equally productive against the Eagles with 27 points and tying her season high with six steals. The latter game highlighted her specialties on both ends of the floor.

All of this and more added up to averages of 28.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 4.5 steals for the two games. She’s a big reason the Irish climbed five spots to third in the latest AP Top 25 Poll, and it would not be surprising to seem them climb higher before this season is over.

For the latest Hidalgo highlights, here they are against the Eagles:

That’s a typical game for her, folks. Get familiar with her if you haven’t already.

Former Wisconsin wide receiver reenters transfer portal

Former Wisconsin wide receiver reenters transfer portal

Former Wisconsin and Eastern Michigan wide receiver Markus Allen reentered the transfer portal on Tuesday.

He does so with one final year of eligibility remaining. He’s looking to capitalize off a career-best 2024 campaign at Eastern Michigan, during which he recorded 43 catches, 651 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

“I appreciate coach [Grant] Heard and coach [Chris] Creighton for the opportunity to pursue my dreams,” Allen wrote on X. “After discussion with my family, we feel as if it’s best I bet on myself for my final year of eligibility by entering my name into the transfer portal.”

Allen’s collegiate career has been a rollercoaster to date. He first joined Wisconsin as a three-star recruit in the class of 2021, joining after first committing and decommitting from Michigan. He played for the Badgers for the 2021 season and part of 2022, totaling just 10 receptions, 156 yards and one receiving touchdown.

The veteran receiver first entered the transfer portal in October 2022 after Wisconsin fired head coach Paul Chryst. He quickly committed to rival Minnesota, though soon decommitted and rejoined the Badgers program as Luke Fickell took over.

He then returned to the portal in June 2023 after an April arrest, played the 2023 season at Butler Community College, then finally moved to Eastern Michigan for the 2024 campaign.

His career-best 651 receiving yards in 2024 were good for second on the Eagles, just nine yards behind Terry Lockett Jr. (660).

Allen is one of several members of the 2022 Wisconsin wide receiver room that is finding success. Vinny Anthony had a breakout season with the Badgers, Chimere Dike played well for Florida, Skyler Bell had a big year at UConn and Keontez Lewis even broke some records at Southern Illinois.

Wisconsin, meanwhile, is set for a busy transfer portal season with numerous major roster needs. Bookmark our offer and interest tracker for all of the program’s moves and signings.

Former Wisconsin wide receiver has breakout performance with new program

Former Wisconsin wide receiver has breakout performance with new program

Former Wisconsin wide receiver Markus Allen had a breakthrough performance for Eastern Michigan in its Week 8 win over Central Michigan on Saturday.

Allen finished the contest with seven receptions, 140 receiving yards and a touchdown. That receiving total is the eighth-highest across the entire country for Week 8, trailing Jalen Royals (Utah State, 188 yards), Harold Fannin Jr. (Bowling Green, 171), Luke Wysong (New Mexico, 156), Jaylin Noel (Iowa State, 153), Terrance Carter (Louisiana, 149) and Elijhah Badger (Florida, 148).

The performance pushes Allen’s season totals to 22 receptions, 318 yards, 14.5 yards per reception and one touchdown through seven games.

He is one of several former Wisconsin receivers finding solid roles with their new programs. Skyler Bell is having a fantastic season at UConn, while Keontez Lewis has set records at Southern Illinois.

Allen’s collegiate path has been winding to this point. He joined Wisconsin as a three-star recruit in the class of 2021, joining after first committing and decommitting from Michigan.

He went on to play for the Badgers in 2021 and part of 2022, recording 10 total receptions for 156 yards and a touchdown.

Allen initially entered the transfer portal in October 2022 after Wisconsin fired head coach Paul Chryst. He soon committed to Minnesota, though later backed out of that commitment and rejoined the Badgers program.

He reentered the portal in June 2023 after an April arrest, spent the 2023 season at Butler Community College in Clayton, Ohio, then landed at Eastern Michigan for the 2024 campaign.

Allen will look to continue his strong year with the Eagles (5-2) when they visit Akron on Oct. 26.

Savannah De Bock ends drought with Golfweek Red Sky Classic title. Where can she lead Eastern Michigan from here?

Savannah De Bock, a top international talent from Belgium, could help lay a foundation for a revitalization of the Eastern Michigan women’s golf program.

Josh Brewer sees in Savannah De Bock the quality all good players have: An unfailing confidence in her own game.

“She thinks she’s holing every shot she can get to the hole,” said Brewer, the new women’s golf coach at Eastern Michigan. “If it’s a hybrid or a putt, she really thinks she should make it.”

De Bock, from Belgium, spent the spring semester at Georgia, playing for Brewer. She transferred to Eastern Michigan for her sophomore season to follow a coach she felt she connected with and now, she could help lay a foundation for a revitalization of the Eagles’ women’s golf program. Here’s a player who could be a contender on the Annika Award Watch List and in the conversation for other postseason honors – as Brewer says, someone who can “cause some headaches for the Power 4 schools.”

De Bock’s fall season began last month at big venues, like Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington, which hosted the 2015 U.S. Open and the 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur. De Bock tied for eighth there at the season-opening Leadership and Golf Invitational. She was six shots out of first and her week included a quadruple bogey on the 18th hole because of “a bad shot that led to another bad shot that led to another bad shot,” she said.

“I learned from it,” De Bock said, “We can see that this weekend was much better.”

On a high-altitude Tom Fazio layout for the Golfweek Red Sky Classic in Wolcott, Colorado, a week later, De Bock didn’t make worse than bogey (and had only four of those) on her way to winning her first individual title in two years. De Bock’s 15-under 54-hole total at Red Sky Golf Club is one off the tournament record, and a mind-blowing amount under par for a big golf course set at 8,000 feet with fast, undulating greens.

“Some of the pins were really hard, but I had done a very good practice round with the coaches so I knew where to aim on the greens and what zones to avoid,” De Bock said. “We had a very strong strategy on the par 5s to know when to attack and when not to.”

A second-round 65 at Red Sky is De Bock’s personal best in competition, and she only realized that after counting up all the birdies at the end of the day. She’d posted 66 in tournament play plenty of times, most notably when she won the European Ladies Amateur Championship in 2022.

Just talking about that championship reminded De Bock of the drought she’d been in ever since that title. It was something she’d talked about recently with Brewer.

“I was just like holy cow, I cannot win a thing,” she said. “I was feeling a little blue about it.”

When De Bock arrived in the U.S., Brewer said she fired at every pin. Her victory at Red Sky is evidence of her being more open to a different game plan – and having the ability to execute it. De Bock has also improved her club-head speed since arriving in the U.S., which has made her an increased threat.

De Bock doesn’t just want to play the tour someday, she wants the whole experience. Asked for her goals in golf, she listed the LPGA grand slam and holing the winning putt for Europe in the Solheim Cup.

“I just want to get really great at it,” she said of golf, referencing little goals, too, like scoring records.

In the short term, De Bock hopes to get back to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, a tournament she played in 2023 but missed the cut. At Eastern Michigan, Brewer has built a competitive, coast-to-coast schedule that can get her there. De Bock is currently 86th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking but has been as high as 35th. A prominent alum has helped provide the resources for that schedule and beyond.

In May, GameAbove announced a $6.5 million commitment to the Eastern Michigan golf programs. Eastern Michigan alum Keith Stone is the Chairman of GameAbove, a brand encompassing charitable giving, capital investments, sports entertainment, and media ventures, and has donated $34.5 million to the university since 2019, with $14.5 million being earmarked for the golf programs, according to a university release.

The donation has afforded Eastern Michigan’s golf programs myriad opportunities, from increased staffing to facilities to travel funds. It’s a program waiting to be built and Brewer, having spent 12 seasons at Georgia and four seasons as an assistant coach at USC before that, is always game for a challenge.

After his first interview with Eastern Michigan, Brewer tossed out a thought: Why not Eastern Michigan?

“It’s kind of stuck and been our mantra. Like, why not? Why can’t we be one of the top programs? We have everything we need besides, I say, the logo,” Brewer said, referencing Eastern Michigan’s mid-major status.

“It’s a unique challenge and I want to prove that it can be done no matter where you’re at, no matter what part of the country.”

Former Wisconsin WR transfer commits to Eastern Michigan

Former Wisconsin WR Markus Allen finds a new home:

Former Wisconsin wide receiver Markus Allen committed to Eastern Michigan on Friday.

Allen played with the Badgers from 2021-22. He departed the program in June of 2023, though did not immediately find a D-1 home and has since played at Butler Community College.

His collegiate path has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. The former three-star recruit flipped to Wisconsin during the class of 2021 recruiting cycle after originally pledging to Michigan. He was 247Sports’ No. 53 wide receiver in the class and No. 15 recruit from his home state of Ohio.

The wide receiver then played two years for the Badgers, appearing in nine games and recording 10 total receptions for 156 yards and one touchdown.

Allen originally entered the transfer portal after Wisconsin fired head coach Paul Chryst in October of 2022. He verbally committed to Minnesota during that time, though walked back that commitment and returned to the Badgers after the season.

Then, as mentioned, he re-entered the portal in June of 2023, has spent the last year at Butler Community College in Clayton, Ohio and now has a D-I home.

Allen joins an Eastern Michigan program that went 6-7 in 2023. The Eagles are ESPN SP+’s No. 119-ranked team entering the 2024 season. Its depth chart lists several veteran receivers, which could make it challenging for Allen to see the field immediately.

Eastern Michigan’s Jalin Billingsley drops Akron with a stealthy game-sealing putback dunk

“SLAM DUNK! BILLINGSLEY! EASTERN MICHIGAN!”

Oh, baby. March Madness hasn’t arrived yet, but the madness — pun absolutely intended — is already starting. Eastern Michigan men’s basketball team put away Akron with a filthy putback dunk that you have to see to believe.

Listen, we’re big fans of wild ways to end games. The more chaotic, the better. That’s why Jalin Billingsley of Eastern Michigan deserves a ton of praise for the guts it took to pull off a game-winning putback dunk for the win — see what we did there? — over Akron with 1.9 seconds left in regulation.

The matchup was down to the wire. With the clock moving lightning fast, Billingsley’s teammate Arne Osojnik tried to sink Akron with a clutch 3-point basket. But, it rimmed out. The crowd was already celebrating what they likely thought was a victory when Jalin came flying in, seemingly out of nowhere, with a timely left-handed bucket. The Eastern Michigan bench immediately exploded, and Akron fans, with hands on their heads in disbelief, went noticeably quiet.

Kalen DeBoer, Josh Heupel’s 2016 head-to-head matchup totaled 1,075 yards

A look back at Kalen DeBoer and Josh Heupel’s head-to-head matchup in 2016 that totaled 1,075 yards.

Kalen DeBoer was introduced as Alabama’s head coach on Saturday.

He replaces Nick Saban who retired as the Crimson Tide’s head coach.

“Following coach Saban is an honor,” DeBoer said. “He has been the standard for college football, and his success is unprecedented. I would not have left Washington for just any school. The chance to lead the football program at the University of Alabama is the opportunity of a lifetime. My family and I feel truly blessed and look forward to becoming a part of the Tuscaloosa community.”

DeBoer served as head coach at Washington (2022-23), Fresno State (2020-21) and Sioux Falls (2005-09), compiling a 104-12 record and winning three NAIA national championships.

DeBoer also served as an offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois (2010-13), Eastern Michigan (2014-16), Fresno State (2017-18) and Indiana (2019).

While at Eastern Michigan, DeBoer and the Eagles played at Missouri in 2016. Josh Heupel was in his first season as Missouri’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during the 2016 campaign.

The Tigers hosted Eastern Michigan on Sept. 10, winning 61-21. The 2016 matchup is the only one with the two offensive coaches from South Dakota facing each other.

Below are DeBoer and Heupel’s offenses by the numbers in the 2016 Eastern Michigan-Missouri matchup. The two offensive coaches combined to total 1,075 yards.
