Deion Sanders asked about facing former CU running back Dylan Edwards

Deion Sanders was asked about facing Dylan Edwards for the first time since his transfer

We highlighted it in our first look at what you need to know about Kansas State, but former Colorado running back Dylan Edwards will return to Folsom Field on Saturday for the first time as a Wildcat.

Edwards spent his freshman season with the Buffs and burst onto the scene in his first career game, scoring four touchdowns in CU’s upset win over the TCU Horned Frogs. He finished the year with 321 rushing yards before entering the transfer portal in April. The lightning-quick Derby, Kansas native then committed to Kansas State only days after entering the portal.

Ahead of Saturday’s matchup between the Buffs and Wildcats, CU football head coach Deion Sanders was asked about facing Edwards for the first time since his departure.

“They changed their name to the Dylan Edwards? That’s what the team is called now, the Dylan Edwards?” Sanders joked. “We aren’t playing against Dylan Edwards. We are playing against a darn good football team. Dylan just happens to be on their team.”

Coach Prime expanded on his answer, focusing on what he wishes for any player who leaves the team.

“I love the young man (Edwards),” Sanders said. “I love him to life. Everybody who leaves here in the right manner, I want them to be successful. I have never wished wrongful or bad things on any young man or woman in my life or on any of you all. I want you to be successful, and I want you to find your purpose.”

Former Notre Dame Commit Leaves Coach Prime, Finds New Home

Former Notre Dame commitment officially finds a new home…

Notre Dame fans might be familiar with the name [autotag]Dylan Edwards[/autotag].

Edwards was a Notre Dame commitment in the 2023 recruiting class as late as early-December of 2022, but after an offer from Deion Sanders, he flipped his commitment and eventually enrolled at Colorado.

This came after Edwards had originally committed to Kansas State, only to flip to Notre Dame.

Despite scoring four touchdowns in Colorado’s shocking Week One victory at TCU last year, Edwards only scored one the remainder of the season.  He recently announced he was entering the transfer portal and we now officially know his new home.

Which is an old one of his, sort of.

It won’t be Notre Dame for the one-time commitment but with where Notre Dame’s backfield is currently at you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in South Bend too worried about missing out.

UCLA expressed interest in Colorado transfer Dylan Edwards

UCLA in contact with another former Buffs RB.

The Colorado Buffaloes have surprisingly seen a large number of players enter the portal this Spring. The list includes players such as Cormani McClain and Alton McCaskill, both of whom the UCLA Bruins have been in contact with.

Another player UCLA has targeted is former Buffs running back Dylan Edwards.

Edwards is an intriguing player in the portal, and UCLA is one of the main schools to express interest, per Hayes Fawcett of On3. The others include Georgia, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Nebraska, and Texas A&M.

The four-star recruit originally was slated to play at Notre Dame before reversing course and joining Deion Sanders and the Buffs.

As a freshman, Edwards had 76 carries for 321 yards and a score. He added 36 receptions for 299 yards and four scores and he made highlights by totaling four touchdowns in the opener against TCU. This included a must-see 75-yard touchdown on a screen pass.

This would be a massive get for UCLA.

Transfer portal target Dylan Edwards commits to Kansas State

Nebraska transfer portal target Dylan Edwards has committed to Kansas State.

Nebraska transfer portal target Dylan Edwards, a rising sophomore tailback who was most recently with the Colorado Buffaloes, has found his next destination.

The Derby, Kansas native, is returning to his home state and will play for Kansas State. He announced his decision on X, posting a tweet of him in Kansas City gear with the home emoji.

Edwards appeared to be on track for a major season in 2023 as a true freshman after a phenomenal debut against TCU in which he recorded five receptions for 135 receiving yards and three touchdowns in a 45-42 win for Colorado.

He would, however, finish with just 76 rushing attempts for 321 yards and one touchdown. He also had 36 receptions for 299 yards and four touchdowns.

Texas A&M has reportedly contacted former star Colorado running back

Former Colorado running back Dylan Edwards has been in contact with Texas A&M

Texas A&M is still in the market for adding depth at several positions, especially on offense. New offensive coordinator Collin Klein requires more weapons in the passing game for starting quarterback Conner Weigman to thrive in 2024.

With the strategic aim of adding another dynamic playmaker to the team, former Auburn wide receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson is set to visit College Station next Friday. This potential addition, along with former Colorado running back Dylan Edwards, who recently entered the transfer portal, demonstrates the team’s thoughtful and proactive approach to recruiting through the portal.

According to On3, six teams have contacted Edwards since his announcement, including Texas A&M. Klein recruited Edwards, a native of Derby, Kansas, during his time as Kansas State’s OC during the 2023 recruiting cycle.

During his lone freshman season with the Buffaloes, Edwards was a lightning rod in the backfield, racking up 768 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns, including 321 rushing yards on 76 carries. Ole Miss, UCLA, Georgia, Kansas State and Nebraska.

While the Aggies are set at running back, adding more explosiveness to the new offensive scheme is never a bad idea.

Nebraska showing interest in recent Colorado portal entry

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have quickly shown interest in a Pac-12 RB transfer.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are one of a handful of programs that showed quick interest in Colorado Buffaloe’s portal entry, Dylan Edwards, according to multiple reports on X.

Edwards, as a true freshman for Colorado, rushed for 321 yards and one touchdown across 76 carries while also recording 36 receptions for 299 yards and four touchdowns.

The Derby, Kansas native had a breakout performance in his first-ever game last season as Colorado knocked off the then No. 17 ranked TCU Horned Frogs 45-42. In that game, Edwards rushed for just 24 yards on six carries but also had five receptions for 135 yards and three touchdowns.

While Edwards did not have nearly the same amount of success the remainder of the year, playing behind a porous Colorado offensive line, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound tailback is still garnering quite a bit of interest already in the transfer portal.

According to Parker Thune of Rivals, other programs that have shown quick interest in Edwards include Georgia, Texas A&M, Louisville, Kansas State, UCLA, Washington, Stanford, and, of course, Nebraska.

Dylan Edwards becoming ‘more dynamic’ within Colorado’s offense

Dylan Edwards views himself as more than just a running back

Colorado running back Dylan Edwards burst onto the scene early last season as a true freshman, but 2024 should be an even bigger year for the Buffs’ offensive playmaker.

During his first college football season, Edwards was on the field plenty for the Buffs, getting touches in the run game while being a reliable check-down for quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the passing game. Sporting a bulked-up frame amid his second spring in Boulder, Edwards spoke with the media Tuesday about his role within new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur’s system.

Remembering his four-touchdown game against TCU, I asked Edwards if catching the ball was still a major part of his game. His answer should have Buffs fans thinking about NFL stars such as Christian McCaffrey or even a shorter version of Deebo Samuel.

“It’s crazy, because this year I’m playing way more receiver,” Edwards said. “I’m more dynamic in our offense. I’m not just a running back. I am in the running backs room, but I view myself as not a running back or a receiver. I’m just an all-around threat towards the defense. I feel like I can split out. I can go in motion. I can do it all.”

WATCH: Colorado pulls out the trickery as Jimmy Horn Jr. throws TD pass to Dylan Edwards

Colorado pulled out a trick play that resulted in an early touchdown against Utah

Jimmy Horn Jr. enjoyed an impressive first half in Colorado’s season finale at Utah.

With Xavier Weaver, Shedeur Sanders and several other key players out, Horn has been asked to do a little more for the Buffs this Saturday. In the game’s first 30 minutes, the former South Florida wide receiver caught two passes for 18 yards and also returned a kickoff 41 yards.

Horn’s best moment came midway through the second quarter when he caught a backward pass from Ryan Staub and slung it downfield to running back Dylan Edwards for a 30-yard touchdown.

Check out some of the best social media reactions to Colorado’s successful trick play:

Two CU Buffs make College Sports Wire’s list of top Pac-12 performers from Week 1

A pair of Buffs made @College_Wire’s list of the top Pac-12 performers from Week 1

The praise and accolades for the Colorado Buffaloes is not stopping anytime soon. After a thrilling victory over TCU, there are plenty of big stats to point at.

Shedeur Sanders dazzled, as did Travis Hunter and Dylan Edwards, and Deion Sanders earned his first win with the Buffs.

Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire revealed his top Pac-12 performers of the week and both Shedeur Sanders (top passer) and Edwards (top receiver) made the list. Here’s what Conn wrote on Colorado’s QB:

The debut of Shedeur Sanders for Colorado was a special one. After he led the offense to 565 yards of total offense and 45 points. His performance was must-see TV and it showed that the Buffs were here to win some games in 2023.

Sanders set a ton of school records in his debut, and freshman running back Dylan Edwards also had a massive game in his college debut:

The former Notre Dame commit put on a show in Week 1. The freshman from Derby, Kansas had four touchdowns on 11 touches. When the Buffs take the field against Nebraska, keep an eye on the electric play of No. 3.

The rest of the team was Oregon RB Bucky Irving, Washington TE Jack Westover, UCLA pass rusher Laiatu Latu, Washington State DB Jayden Hicks and Utah punter Jack Bouwmeester.

There should be Buffs on this weekly list quite often.

WATCH: Dylan Edwards takes screen pass 75 yards to the house

Dylan Edwards is pure electricity

After a concerning start to the second half that included a pair of offensive mistakes, true freshman Dylan Edwards got the Buffs going again in a major way.

On a second-and-10 from CU’s own 25, the rookie running back received a screen pass from Shedeur Sanders, and with the help of some blockers ahead of him, Edwards took it 75 yards to the house. The third quarter score extended Colorado’s lead to 24-14.

Edwards had somewhat of an up-and-down first half, however. He helped get CU on the board early with a 4-yard touchdown reception but later fumbled a carry late in the second quarter, which ultimately allowed TCU to tie the game at 14.

Per CU Sports Information, Edwards is the first true freshman to score Colorado’s first points of the season since Jeremy Bloom returned a punt 75 yards against CSU in 2002.

Watch Edwards’ electric run below:

Early in the third quarter, the Buffs lead TCU 24-21.
