Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback D’Wan Mathis has transferred to the Davenport University, a Division II school in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mathis is returning closer to home. Mathis played high school football for Oak Park High School in Oak Park, Michigan.

Mathis is a former four-star recruit. He was named the season-opener starter at quarterback for the Temple Owls in 2021 and 2022. Mathis threw for 1,223 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions in 2021 for Temple.

Additionally, Mathis was named the opening day starter at quarterback for Georgia during the 2020 college football season, but he lost his job to Stetson Bennett in his first career start against Arkansas. A lot has changed with the Georgia football program since Mathis was the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback.

During the 2022 college football season, Mathis changed positions and started playing as a wide receiver. Mathis finished 2022 with six receptions for 44 receiving yards. Kurt Warner’s son, E.J. Warner, took over the starting role as Temple’s top quarterback. Warner was one of the leading passers in the country.

Temple is coming off a tough 3-9 season. The Owls won three of their first five games in 2021, but lost all of their remaining contests.

D’Wan Mathis and Temple should have a better season in 2022.

Former Georgia quarterback D’Wan Mathis has been named the starter for the Temple Owls.

Mathis announced his transfer to Temple in December.

Mathis beat former Iowa State quarterback and Elite 11 standout Re-al Mitchell for the job.

Mathis lost his job midway through the game against Arkansas. The former four-star recruit from Oak Park High School in Oak Park, Michigan, will be closer to home.

He was Georgia’s co-winner of the David Jacobs Award in 2019 for overcoming his scary brain cyst. He’s a tough player and will compete for the starting quarterback role at Temple.

Mathis is a mobile quarterback, but he’s not an elite athlete. He didn’t break many big runs during his time at the University of Georgia. Overall, he went 12-of-30 for 89 yards, passed for one touchdown, and threw three interceptions during his 2020 campaign for Georgia.

Hopefully, he can stay healthy and play well for Temple.

Twitter reacts to D’Wan Mathis leaving UGA

The Twitter world reacts to news of Georgia football QB D’Wan Mathis leaving UGA.

Dawgs247 first reported the breaking news of Georgia quarterback D’Wan Mathis leaving the University of Georgia.

Here is how the Twitter world reacted:

Kirby Smart, this is getting old. Make the change at QB.

Georgia football HC Kirby Smart needs to make the change.

Before my DMs fill up, let me say that I am a huge Kirby Smart fan. This post is not my way of saying we should fire Kirby. If we fire Kirby, we are screwed. Plain and simple.

But that’s enough being nice on a night like this.

Kirby, what are you doing, dude? Nobody will think any less of you as a man if you admit your mistake and pull Stetson Bennett.

Is that what you’re worried about? Because I honestly cannot think of any reason why Bennett is still the starting quarterback for the University of Georgia.

I get that maybe D’Wan Mathis just isn’t any good. But neither is Bennett.

If it’s true that Mathis really is just a not-great quarterback, Kirby has nothing to lose and everything to gain. We’re already not going to the SEC Championship Game. We already know Bennett isn’t the answer.

So play Mathis; and when he stinks you can say ‘I told you so.’

What about Daniels?

This brings up the JT Daniels question. If he’s healthy enough to play, there’s absolutely no reason he should not be in at quarterback. If he’s not healthy enough, you should probably say that so we stop scratching our head wondering why our coach can’t make the right decision yet again.

You made the wrong decision when it came to Jacob Eason. You were beyond wrong when it came to Justin Fields. And we don’t know if you’re wrong yet about JT Daniels or D’Wan Mathis, but until you prove us wrong, we’re going to wonder what the heck you’re doing.

But you know who else is going to wonder if the Georgia head coach has any clue what to do when it comes to the quarterback position?

Yep. Recruits. Kirby’s done a great job of reeling in these 4 and 5-star quarterback recruits so far, but that will end soon if he does not get it together.

Watch: D’Wan Mathis to George Pickens scene one

Watch new UGA quarterback D’Wan Mathis connect to star receiver George Pickens for a big first-down conversion here!

Georgia has a starting quarterback.

Coach Kirby Smart and staff elected to start redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis over USC transfer J.T. Daniels and he has shown some ability early on in the first half.

This particular throw to George Pickens may be a foreshadowing of things to come for the Bulldog offense :

Love how Mathis stood tall and got it to Pickens with not much room to work with; hopefully we get to see more of this moving forward!

Check back here for more highlights and analysis during the game.

Kirby Smart says J.T. Daniels not cleared at moment

Kirby Smart tells SEC Network that J.T. Daniels has not yet been cleared, says Georgia has their QB1 for “week and a half”.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart says on SEC Network that quarterback J.T. Daniels is not cleared at the moment.

Daniels suffered a torn ACL last season at USC and made the transfer to Georgia this offseason.  Smart mentioned that it is possible the former 5-star recruit could be cleared before the 4:00 p.m. kickoff against Arkansas but the Dawgs have their starter for a “week and a half”.

D’Wan Mathis will start at quarterback for Georgia against Arkansas and the quarterback position will likely be evaluated throughout the season.
