Controversial no-call sets up Duke’s thrilling OT win over UNC

Did referees blow these crucial calls at the end of Duke-UNC?

The greatest rivalry in college basketball provided all-timer on Saturday in Chapel Hill, which featured ridiculous endings to regulation and overtime.

Duke overcame a 10-point deficit with just over two minutes to play, and guard Tre Jones saved the Blue Devils at the buzzer with an intentionally missed free-throw that enabled him to hit a game-tying buzzer beater.

The ending to overtime was every bit as wild. North Carolina fell behind early in the overtime period but fought back to lead by five with just 21 seconds remaining. Buckets from Jones and Wendell Moore cut the Tar Heels’ lead to one point with 13 seconds left, and the Blue Devils got the ball back on a controversial inbounds play that resulted in a North Carolina turnover.

UNC inbounded the ball to Andrew Platek, and Duke’s Moore lunged for the ball as Platek caught it. The ball was knocked loose and went out of bounds, and Platek hit the floor after taking slight contact from Moore – but officials did not call a foul on the play, and ruled on the court that the ball was off of Platek.

ESPN commentator Jay Bilas couldn’t believe the no call, arguing that Moore clearly fouled Platek. Officials went to a replay review to determine who touched the ball last, but there wasn’t clear evidence that the ball was off Moore, so they stuck with the original call.

Duke got the ball to Jones, who drove to the basket and drew a foul. Jones hit the first shot to tie the game at 96-96 – but missed the go-ahead shot. Moore tipped the ball back out and Duke retained the ball, allowing Jones to try and attempt a game-winner before the clock expired. Jones missed his off-balance attempt, but Moore caught the airball and put it in off the glass to win the game.

Tre Jones saves Duke with miraculous buzzer-beater to force OT vs. UNC

This was wild.

Duke and North Carolina played a thriller in Chapel Hill on Saturday, and Tre Jones delivered one of the wildest highlights in the history of the rivalry to force overtime and complete a miraculous Duke comeback.

North Carolina shot above 50 percent from the game and led throughout, and had Duke on the ropes late in the second half, leading by 10 with 2:18 remaining in the game.

Point guard Tre Jones led a furious Duke comeback to give the Blue Devils a chance, but he needed a miracle just to force OT. Up 84-82, North Carolina fouled Jones with 4.4 seconds remaining to prevent Duke from hitting a game-winning three. Jones made his first free-throw, and intentionally missed the second to try and create an opportunity to tie or win the game – and executed the play to perfection.

Jones heaved the ball off the back of the rim to himself, managed to avoid turning the ball over, and hit a buzzer-beater to stun the crowd in Chapel Hill.

Former Duke players watching the game couldn’t believe it.

Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina Tar Heels college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina Tar Heels sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Duke Blue Devils (19-3) head to Chapel Hill to play their longtime rival, the North Carolina Tar Heels (10-12), in the Dean E. Smith Center at 6:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Duke-North Carolina odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Duke at North Carolina: Three things you need to know

  1. Duke versus North Carolina is one of college basketball’s most storied rivalries. Today will be the 250th meeting between the two schools and the Tar Heels lead the Blue Devils in the all-time series, 138-111.
  2. This North Carolina team is on pace to be the worst Tar Heel team of the Roy Williams era. The Tar Heels have made the NCAA Tournament in 16 of Williams’ 17 seasons at the helm and have never finished below .500.
  3. The Blue Devils come into today’s game on a four-game winning streak after taking back-to-back losses to the Louisville Cardinals and Clemson Tigers. Their star freshman center, Vernon Carey Jr., averaged 20 points and 11.5 rebounds per game in those four wins.

Prediction

UNC 73, Duke 70

Moneyline (ML)

This is a fringe play, but let’s SPRINKLE A SMALL WAGER ON NORTH CAROLINA +280 on the money line. From a recruiting standpoint, Duke does have a talent advantage: The Blue Devils have eight RSCI top-100 recruits compared to the Tar Heels’ five top-100 recruits. But North Carolina has the most prized recruit out of the two teams in PG Cole Anthony, who should be a top-5 pick in this summer’s NBA Draft. Between he and PF Garrison Brooks—who’s averaging 14.9 points and nine rebounds per game make him a difficult matchup for Duke’s Carey Jr.—the Tar Heels have real money line value in the Smith Center.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Betting trends are in favor of BETTING NORTH CAROLINA +8 (-115). First, the Tar Heels are 5-1 against the spread in their last six meetings versus Duke. Second, North Carolina is 4-3 ATS on the road against above .500 teams and 1-0 ATS when getting 7.5-9.5 points. Since 2015, North Carolina’s ACC conference game ATS record is better than Duke’s—the Tar Heels are 52-42-2 ATS, while the Blue Devils are 44-50-2 ATS against ACC competition.

Over/Under (O/U)

We are on the UNDER 150.5 (-115) in North Carolina-Duke. The Under correlates with our Tar Heels money line and ATS picks because they have the most Unders in the ACC with a 7-14-1 Over/Under record. Also, the last six North Carolina-Duke games have gone Under.

Duke and UNC are wearing ghastly alternate uniforms for rivalry game

This is a terrible look.

Duke vs. North Carolina is the best rivalry in college sports, but when both teams take the floor Saturday night at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, they’ll be wearing some of the worst jerseys you’ll see all season.

Duke and North Carolina have iconic primary uniforms, but to commemorate the 100th year of the rivalry, each team is wearing a special alternate uniform inspired by the jerseys worn when UNC defeated what was then called Trinity College in their first meeting in 1920. As it turns out, uniform designers weren’t doing a great job 100 years ago.

Duke and North Carolina will each be wearing their respective shade of blue on Saturday, which should make for a visual reminiscent of NFL color rush matchups.

It’s possible that Duke may have introduced both the best and worst uniforms in program history this year. The Blue Devils’ “Brotherhood” alternates are phenomenal, but the rivalry alternates should never be worn again.

Duke vs. UNC will start at 6:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

WATCH: Duke’s Coach K apologizes after yelling at Cameron Crazies to ‘shut up’

Coach K went off on Duke students over a chant about Jeff Capel.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is apologetic following the No. 9 Blue Devils’ 79-67 win versus Pittsburgh. The Hall of Fame coach interrupted the Cameron Crazies’ “sit with us,” chant during the first half of Tuesday night’s game.

Krzyzewski crossed the court from Duke’s (17-3, 7-2 ACC) bench and yelling at the young fans to “Shut up.” The crazies were cheering at Pitt head coach Jeff Capel, who played at Duke and was an assistant on Krzyzewski’s staff for seven seasons before leaving Durham for the Panthers’ head job in 2018. It’s routine for the Duke student section to invite former players (or even committed high school players) to their side of the court to “sit with us.” But, it turns out Coach K couldn’t quite hear anything other than Capel’s name.

“I don’t know if I made a mistake on that, but I’ve never heard another coach’s name yelled out in the middle of the first half when we’re in a war with the team,” Krzyzewski said postgame. “I don’t know if they were saying, ‘Come sit with me.’ We got a different look at what the hell was going on. I thought it was something personal…. I apologize to the students for that.”

Krzyzewski emphasized that more than anything, he wanted the students to understand Capel is one of Duke’s own and added that once he heard the name in the middle of the game, he didn’t exactly waltz over and ask what exactly was being said.

The Duke coach offered up a solution that included cheering for the Blue Devils, saying “Leave the other guy alone.”

The Crazies without taunting? Feels like that goes a bit against their reputation.

Duke at Clemson odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Duke Blue Devils vs. Clemson Tigers sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Duke Blue Devils (15-1, 5-0 ACC) – the No. 3 team in the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll – travel to Clemson, S.C., to square off against the Clemson Tigers (8-7, 2-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Littlejohn Coliseum. We analyze the Duke-Clemson odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Duke at Clemson: Three things you need to know

1. Clemson has played just three games over the last 15 days. The Tigers aren’t a good shooting team to begin with, ranking 255th in the country with a 42.4% field-goal percentage. Any rust and their 253rd-ranked offense (68.7 points per game) will be game-controlled into submission in a double-digit boat race. … Clemson lost by 19 at Duke (Jan. 5, 2019) in the last meeting between the two schools as the Blue Devils covered a 15-point spread.

2. Clemson figures as a second-50 squad in most advanced-analytics computer rankings. The Blue Devils have played five such foes this year. In those comps, Duke is 5-0 with a victory margin of 11 points. While this applies to a straight-up loss more than an against-the-spread defeat, the Devils’ Nov. 26 upset at the hands of Stephen F. Austin could well have a galvanizing effect against any subsequent similar failings. Duke has game-controlled nine wins since (6-3 ATS). Figure the Blue Devils’ next loss – whenever that may be – coming to a top-15.

3. Duke’s best defensive efforts are up close in the rear-view mirror. The Devils have excelled in creating more turnovers of late, all while taking care of the basketball on their own possessions. That’s a solid formula for avoiding close games.

Prediction

Duke 76, Clemson 63

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. Duke (-589) is too chalky. Every $5.89 wagered will only profit $1 if the Blue Devils win. Clemson (+425) will profit $4.25 on every $1 bet if it prevails, but that isn’t happening.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The Blue Devils are 3-1 ATS over four road games, and they are 6-3 ATS in their last nine games. Clemson is 4-5 ATS over its last nine.

How much energy can the home crowd bring tonight at Littlejohn Coliseum? Bleary-eyed Tiger fans – slumping after Monday’s College Football Championship game – may not have much to cheer about in the second half. Take DUKE -10.5 (+100).

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U is 2-2 in Duke’s road games and 5-5 in Clemson’s home games. Duke wants to play a faster pace in this one. A major offensive rebounding advantage for the Devils and a low rate of getting to the foul line for the Tigers should work against Clemson in its efforts to slow things down. Take the OVER 134.5 (-115).

Duke at Georgia Tech college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Duke Blue Devils vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Duke Blue Devils (13-1, 3-0 ACC) and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (7-7, 2-2 ACC) tip it off at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday. We analyze the Duke-Georgia Tech odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

The Blue Devils are ranked second in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

Duke at Georgia Tech: Three things you need to know

1. Duke ranks fourth in the nation with 84.1 points per game, and is 17th in the country with a field-goal percentage of 48.4%.

2. Blue Devils F Vernon Carey Jr. leads the team in points (18.4 per game), rebounds (9.0 RPG) and blocked shots (2.1 BPG) with a field-goal percentage of 62.8%, while G Tre Jones leads the team with 7.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

3. Georgia Tech is coming off its most impressive and complete effort of the season, a 96-83 victory at North Carolina Jan. 4.

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 7:10 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Duke 82, Georgia Tech 64

Moneyline (ML)

Duke (-910) is an overwhelming favorite, and you cannot risk more than nine times the return. That’s just ludicrous. AVOID the temptation of Georgia Tech (+575), too. The Jackets are not half the team they showed in UNC.

Against the Spread (ATS)

DUKE (-12, -110) topped Georgia Tech (+12, -110) last season by a 66-53 score, failing to cover a 23-point number at home. The last time these teams met at McCamish, the Blue Devils came away with an 80-69 road win to cover an 8.5-point spread. Look for the Blue Devils to smack the Yellow Jackets back to reality after their impressive win at North Carolina. Duke pounded Miami by 33 last time out, and will treat Georgia Tech similarly.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 139 (-110) is the way to go in this one, hitting in three of the past four true road or neutral-site games for the Blue Devils.

The Yellow Jackets’ offensive outburst was a rarity, as they’re normally in the 60’s. They have posted 67.6 PPG to rank 273rd in the nation. Carey, Jones and company, however, have piled up the points, and they’ll do so against the Yellow Jackets, too.

Boston College at Duke odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Boston College Eagles at Duke Blue Devils sports betting odds and lines, with NCAA basketball betting odds and picks.

The Boston College Eagles (8-5, 2-0 ACC) and Duke Blue Devils (11-1, 1-0 ACC) lock horns at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday. We analyze the Boston College-Duke odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Boston College at Duke: Three things you need to know

1. This will be the conference home opener for the Blue Devils. They topped Virginia Tech in Blacksburg by a 77-63 count Dec. 6.

2. The Eagles fell 80-55 at Cameron last season, just failing to cover a 24-point number. They’re in a similar spot in this one. The Blue Devils fell 89-84 Dec. 9, 2017, in the previous meeting in Chestnut Hill, though.

3. The favorite has cashed in five of the past seven meetings in this series.

Prediction

Duke 82, Boston College 65

Moneyline (ML)

There was no moneyline available at the time of publishing.

Against the Spread (ATS)

BOSTON COLLEGE (+22.5, -110) has covered the spread in nine of its last 13 road games, while going 9-4 ATS in the past 13 on the road against teams with a winning home mark, too. Duke (-22.5, -110), who inexplicably lost at Cameron against Stephen F. Austin earlier this season, has failed to cover in five of the past six home games.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 140.5 (-106) is the play in this ACC battle in the Triangle. The Under is 7-2 in the past nine for BC, but the Over is 4-1-1 in the past six road outings for the Eagles. For Duke, it’s all Over, all the time. The Over is 6-2 in its past eight, 4-1 in the past five at home and 5-1 in the previous six against teams with a winning overall mark. In fact, I plan to make the Over play as part of my pick pack in the final day of 2019.

Miami at Duke odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Miami Hurricanes at Duke Blue Devils sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks and tips.

The Miami Hurricanes (6-5) visit the Duke Blue Devils (4-7) for a 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday ACC contest at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham. We analyze the Miami-Duke odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Miami at Duke: Three things you need to know

1. Duke won last year’s meeting in Miami despite being outgained, 411 yards to 290. The Blue Devils are 5-9 against the spread since. The Hurricanes are 13-2 in their all-time series against Duke.

2. The Blue Devils have struggled in late-season home games the last few years. They’re 1-7 ATS in such contests. The stretch includes losses earlier this month against Notre Dame and Syracuse. The Blue Devils scored a combined 13 points over those home losses (Nov. 9, Nov. 16). Offensively, Duke has averaged 4.9 yards per play on the road but just 4.3 YPP at Wallace Wade.

3. The Hurricanes defense has allowed just 274 YPG over their last three efforts away from home. For the season, Miami ranks 17th in the nation in yards per play, with just 4.8 allowed.

Miami at Duke: Odds, betting lines and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last Friday at 6 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Miami 31, Duke 17

Moneyline (ML)

We’ll pass on the Miami (-358) line. That figure implies a 79% win expectation, and that’s on the overly aggressive side. A -315 line would have some value baked in, but bigger moneylines hold more juice and that makes such a price move unlikely.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Miami returns a profit of $2.79.

Against the Spread (ATS)

A Miami offense with a near-average performance in third-down conversions is a much better product. The ‘Canes are languishing with a 27% success rate (129th of 130 FBS teams). Two games back against Louisville, Miami went 5-for-10 on the penultimate down; it scored 52 points. With that potential in mind, the ‘Canes are coming off a disappointing loss to Florida International, one which saw Miami get undone by turnovers (-3) and hidden yards.

Identifying false recency bias — over-inflating or under-inflating a line — is a big key in finding value in football betting. Making a play on MIAMI (-9.5, -106).

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U is an expensive proposition on the low side (Under 47.5, -139). The game flow here is a clouded picture. Duke’s offense has gone through stretches where it can’t help but score 40 and others when it can’t get into double digits. PASS.
