Friday Night Notes: Texas A&M enters the chat, UCF hosts ‘Honeycomb’ and more

It’s not how you start a race, it’s how you finish.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond

It’s not how you start a race; it’s how you finish. We got a reminder of that this week as Texas A&M finally got into the mix with their recruiting class of 2023. After lagging behind other big schools for several months, the Aggies scored two big recruits this week…

On Tuesday, four-star La Grange (Texas) cornerback Bravion Rogers decided to recommit to Texas A&M after decommitting last month.

Rogers (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) is ranked as the seventh-best player in the state and is No. 4 at his position by 247Sports. He also had interest from Alabama, Baylor and Georgia.

In addition to his defensive work, Rogers is a productive running back. During his junior year, he totaled 1,006 yards and 15 touchdowns on just 105 carries. On the other side of the ball, he posted two interceptions and only allowed a 38.1% completion rate.

That same day Texas A&M got another big commitment to bolster their 2023 offensive line. Five-star Westlake (Texas) guard TJ Shanahan Jr. has also committed to Jimbo Fisher’s team. Shanahan (6-foot-4, 310 pounds) is considered one of the most powerful linemen in his class and is ranked No. 150 nationally. The Aggies still have work to do, though. Shanahan is only their 11th recruit overall.

These moves helped propel Texas A&M up several spots in the 2023 recruiting rankings: after leap-frogging over Washington, Northwestern, TCU and Iowa, among others, they’re up to No. 24.

Texas to host five-star TE Duce Robinson this weekend

The top tight end prospect in the nation will take a visit to Texas this weekend.

The nation’s top tight end prospect is making the trip to Austin this weekend for an official visit.

Five-star Duce Robinson is ranked by 247Sports composite as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Arizona and a top 20 overall player in the class of 2023.

Robinson is a two-sport star who excels on both the football field and the baseball diamond. His 6-foot-6 frame and exceptional athletism make him a potential difference-maker at the next level. Alabama, Georgia, Texas and USC are currently the top schools in the mix for Robinson.

Texas has the opportunity to make a strong impression while hosting Robinson this weekend and the rest of the season. Longhorns’ tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders seems like he will be a focal point of the offense this season. Watching Sanders perform at a high level can not hurt Texas’ chances with Robinson.

USC target Duce Robinson is a 2022 Preseason MaxPreps All-America selection

Duce Robinson comes from a family of elite athletes. He could be special … and not just in football, either. #USC’s baseball program can use a lift, too.

Three-sport start athlete (baseball, football and basketball) Duce Robinson of Pinnacle High School in Phoenix is the TE1 for the Max Preps All-America Team for 2022.

His father Dominic Robinson was a two-sport star coming out of high school. He was a five-star football recruit who signed with the St. Louis Rams and was also drafted by the Minnesota Twins. Dominic is now a prominent athletic trainer in Arizona. Duce’s mother, Mary Beth Robinson, was a former All-America swimmer at Florida.

Duce Robinson dominated at The Opening Finals right after his baseball season ended, which just goes to show how dominant Robinson could be at the next level with a full season of football. Robinson is a legitimate Major League Baseball prospect and a top-100 high school baseball prospect for the upcoming 2023 season.

Yet, the five-star tight end is also one of the best at his position in the past decade, so he’ll have a tough choice to make next season. Robinson is only the fourth tight end who has earned five-star status in the 247Sports Composite rankings over the past 10 recruiting cycles. I expect Robinson to be a USC Trojan, being able to play two sports at the next level.

The 6-6, 225-pound Robinson caught 91 passes for 1392 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

5-star TE recruit set to visit Oregon Ducks this weekend

The Ducks will host Duce Robinson, the No. 1 TE in the 2023 class on a recruiting visit this weekend.

The Oregon Ducks have done a good job of recruiting the state of Arizona over the past few years. That started with Mario Cristobal and his coaching staff, and has continued with Dan Lanning’s staff thanks to offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham’s connections in the state.

So far in the past six months, the Ducks have landed 4-star CB Cole Martin out of Phoenix, as well as 4-star WR Kyler Kasper, from Chandler. Before that, the Ducks got 5-star QB Ty Thompson from that area as well.

Now Oregon might have an opportunity to land 5-star TE Duce Robinson, the No. 1 TE in the 2023 recruiting class. Robinson, who stands at 6-foot-6, will be taking a visit to Eugene this weekend as the recruiting dead-period comes to an end.

According to 247Sports, Robinson ranks as the No. 20 overall player in the 2023 class. He is currently projected to land with the USC Trojans according to several Crystal Ball predictions, but we’ll see if the Ducks can get in on the action this weekend with a successful visit, and the alure of playing with 5-star Oregon QB commit Dante Moore. Time will tell.

Nation’s No. 1 tight end details Clemson visit with TCI

The Clemson Insider was able to catch up with the nation’s No. 1 tight end after he made a cross-country trip to The Valley for Saturday’s game against Florida State.

Pinnacle (Phoenix, AZ.) 2023 five-star tight end Duce Robinson took a red-eye flight early Saturday morning to make it to Memorial Stadium. He flew into Charlotte with his parents, they made their way down to Clemson and stayed in the hotel for an hour or two before heading to the game.

Robinson was running on pure adrenaline. The atmosphere in Death Valley certainly kept him awake.

“I really like it there,” Robinson said. “I love Coach Elliott and Coach Swinney. I love the entire coaching staff. It’s beautiful down there. The facilities are incredible. I got to spend time around the other recruits, guys that are being recruited, so it was a lot of fun.”

How would Robinson categorize his relationship with Tony Elliott?

“It’s been one of my best relationships with a coach,” he said of Clemson’s offensive coordinator/tight ends coach. ”We keep in communication every week. We call each other once a week just to check up and see how one another is doing. I feel like we have a really good relationship.”

Robinson had a chance to speak with most of Clemson’s coaching staff. He sat down with Swinney for about 10 minutes prior to the game. Their conversation barely touched the recruiting aspect of things, in fact, Robinson described it as a regular conversation, where Swinney wanted to catch up and check in on the highly-touted prospect.

“Everybody knows, but it just reinforces that Coach Swinney is a great person at heart too,” Robinson said. “Seeing how I’m doing instead of just talking about football.”

Robinson was down in Clemson at the end of June and took an unofficial visit. He got to take in the campus and facilities, but the overall game-day experience had to wait until this past Saturday.

“It’s a completely different atmosphere on game day,” Robinson said. “When we came here during the summer, it’s beautiful and we really liked it, but that game day is just different. Being able to see the Clemson fans, how much everybody loves football there, how invested they are. Then, the atmosphere is just such a great atmosphere. It was really cool.”

The highlight for Robinson came before the game even started. College football’s most exciting 25 seconds was a whole other experience for Robinson, who was very complimentary of the tradition and clearly blown away by what he saw.

Robinson was also impressed by how the tight end position was utilized during Clemson’s 30-20 win over FSU.

“It was really cool,” he said. “Seeing Davis Allen have that big catch, seeing that catch, it was pretty sweet. Being able to see how much the tight end position is moved around in their offense, seeing how they split out wide a lot, and then seeing that it’s a position where you’re put and you’re expected to make big plays in that offense, which I think is really cool.”

After the game, Robinson headed over to baseball and had an opportunity to talk with assistant coach Bradley LeCroy.

“Me and Coach LeCroy, we had talked before over the summer and me and him and I have a really good relationship too,” Robinson said. “We haven’t been able to keep in contact a lot, but we’ve talked a couple of times and they said I could play both (football and baseball) if it’s something I wanted to do.”

While Robinson didn’t really have a chance to talk with any Clemson players, he talked to some commits in the 2022 class and spent a considerable amount of time with Isidore Newman (New Orleans, La.) five-star quarterback Arch Manning and his family.

“Me and him, we actually spent most of the time together, our two families,” Robinson said. “That was really cool. I had met him before, but we didn’t really get to have a true conversation. Being able to sit with him for most of the game and talk with him for most of the game was really cool.”

Robinson doesn’t have a timeline as far as an eventual commitment is concerned. He wants to be able to take in some official visits before making any decisions.

In addition to Clemson, Robinson has been on visits this fall to the University of Oklahoma and Washington this fall.

He is currently tabbed by 247Sports as the No. 1 prospect in the Grand Canyon State, No. 1 tight end nationally and No. 35 overall prospect in the country for the 2023 class.

Notre Dame misses out on elite 2023 TE prospect

On to the next one

You win some, you lose some. That’s recruiting for you and yesterday the Irish lost one when Missouri tight end Mac Markway made his verbal pledge to SEC rising power Florida. If there is one school that has an argument against Notre Dame for Tight End U, its the Gators.

[listicle id=29791]

They recently sent off Kyle Pitts to the NFL with the fourth overall selection to the Atlanta Falcons. The Gators also will welcome in LSU transfer Arik Gilbert, who was seen as the best TE prospect in his recruiting class and now the addition of Markway will just make that room stronger.

Fortunately for the Irish, Markway’s decision was made extremely early for his 2023 class, so Brian Kelly has plenty of time to recalibrate the tight end recruiting board. There are three other tight ends that have been offered in the class so far, Arizona’s Duce Robinson, Virginia’s Mathias Barnwell and Massachusetts Preston Zinter, so expect the Irish to turn up the heat on those prospects.
