Draymond Green on Devin Booker: “Get my man out of Phoenix”

Draymond Green was once again a lightning rod for controversy today on NBA on TNT with his comments on Devin Booker.

[jwplayer fSRsz87Y]

One of my favorite parts about writing for this website is that I get to follow and write about different Michigan State alumni as they make names for themselves at the pro level after leaving East Lansing. With the exception of Le’Veon Bell a few years ago, there hasn’t been a former Spartan who has been more of a lightning rod for controversy than Draymond Green. Well, tonight on NBA on TNT, Green once again had some controversial comments which immediately went viral about Phoenix Suns guard (and Grand Rapids, Michigan born) Devin Booker.

When asked about Booker, Draymond Green said: “Get my man out of Phoenix…”

Ernie Johnson then asked Draymond if he was tampering to try and get Devin Booker to Golden State, to which Draymond replied: “Maybe!”

You can watch the clip below:

Booker has been tearing up the NBA Bubble restart and has averaged over 20 points per game every season he’s been in the league since his rookie year, but has yet to play in the playoffs.

Onyeka Okongwu goes to Warriors in The Athletic’s latest mock draft

Onyeka Okongwu was mocked to the Golden State Warriors in The Athletic’s latest mock draft.

The Golden State Warriors have a bevy of options with their lottery pick in this year’s draft, and one of them could be their big man of the future.

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie released his latest mock draft Tuesday, and the Warriors picked at No. 5 in this one. According to Tankathon, the Warriors, which have the NBA’s worst record, cannot pick lower than fifth overall.

Vecenie mocked USC big man Onyeka Okongwu to Golden State, and the simulation had the Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers drafting ahead of the Warriors. The 2020 NBA draft is scheduled for Oct. 16.

Okongwu is one of the top big men in this draft, and his interior game is NBA-friendly. He positions himself well down low for easy buckets, and he is a stellar roll man in the pick-and-roll. Okongwu was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team, and he was on the All-Pac-12 first team.

He scored 16.2 points per game, grabbed 8.6 rebounds a game and swatted 2.7 blocks a game in his lone season with the Trojans.

Okongwu would fit in Golden State’s offense because of his athleticism around the rim, but Marquese Chriss already fits that archetype. He had his best season during the 2019-20 campaign, and he showed he could be a valuable player for Golden State.

Chriss scored a career-high 9.3 points per game on a career-best 54.5% shooting this season, along with grabbing a career-high 6.2 rebounds.

The Warriors will have a decision to make as to whether they’ll trade or keep their pick. If they fall out of the top three, another team could see value within the top five and want to trade up.

Golden State still has a good opportunity to be a contender for the next few years, with Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson boasting a championship pedigree. Still, choosing to place value on the future in this year’s draft could help the Warriors maintain long term.

Draymond Green to join Charles Barkely on new TNT show

Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green will be part of a new show that TNT is offering around the NBA’s Restart.

The Golden State Warriors are the highest-profile team that won’t be going to the NBA campus for the NBA’s resumption as they racked up the worst record in the league prior to the hiatus. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be Warriors on television, with Draymond Green joining the stacked NBA squad at TNT for a new NBA-based show called “The Arena,” according to our own Mark Medina of USA TODAY. The show will be hosted by former SportsCenter anchor Cari Champion, and will also feature Charles Barkley and Dwyane Wade.

Barkley and Green will be part of “The Arena,” a new one-hour long NBA show that TNT will launch July 20, air nightly through July 24 and then continue into the restart of the NBA regular season (July 30) and playoffs (Aug. 17). Cari Champion will host the show that will also include NBA star Dwyane Wade.

July 20 is when the show will begin, so we are less than a week away from the debut. Teams are also going to start their scrimmages next week. The Lakers will face off against the Dallas Mavericks in their first scrimmage on July 23.

Draymond Green cracks Bleacher Report’s Top 100 NBA players of the 2019-20 season

Draymond Green is the only member of the Warriors to crack the list in Bleacher Report’s Top 100 Players of the 2019-20 NBA Season.

Before the NBA season returns to action in the Orlando bubble, Bleacher Report counted down the top 100 players of the 2019-20 season. Over the past five years, members of the Golden State Warriors have littered across any list ranking NBA players. However, the 2019-20 season was a different story.

Injuries to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson excluded the Splash Brothers duo from Bleacher Report’s rankings. Only players with 500 or more minutes in 2019-20 were eligible for the docket.

Despite their league-worst 15-50 record, one member of the Bay Area’s basketball team cracked the countdown. Although his season wasn’t All-Star caliber, Draymond Green came in at No. 78 on BR’s Top 100 players.

In 2019-20, the former Defensive Player of the Year averaged 8.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.4 steals in 28.4 minutes per game. Without Curry and Thompson on the floor, Green’s shooting numbers dipped to 28.4% from the field and 38.9% from beyond the arc. The Michigan State product also dealt with injuries, missing 22 games for the Warriors.

In Golden State’s Christmas day upset against the Houston Rockets, Green was a factor. The two-time All-Star tallied a season-high 20 points, 11 rebounds and three assists in Golden State’s 116-104 victory. In the Warriors’ 134-123 win against the Pelicans, Green registered a signature triple-double with 17 boards, 16 points and 10 assists.

Former Golden State Warrior turned Minnesota Timberwolves point guard D’Angelo Russell came in at No. 45.

Ranking the Golden State Warriors title teams of the 2010s

The Golden State Warriors were the most dominant team of the 2010s.

The NBA has been a league filled with dynasties or mini runs, but the Golden State Warriors are in their own class of special.

The Miami Heat of the early 2010s were renowned predecessors for small ball, but the Warriors, with their amazing 3-point shooting and ball movement, have changed the league and basketball forever.

Golden State won three titles in five seasons during the last decade, achieving a level of dominance that hadn’t been seen since the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s. As one of the NBA’s most respected teams, the Warriors are poised to rise again.

Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson will have time to rest and recharge for whenever next season begins, and with that veteran core, Golden State always has a chance to achieve greatness.

1. The 2017 Warriors

The 2017 Warriors were the epitome of utter domination.

Kevin Durant had joined the Warriors in the summer of 2016, making his mark as one of the biggest free agent signings in league history. A four-time scoring champ, Durant became the one-man juggernaut for an offense that was already elite.

During the regular season, the Warriors went 67-15 to earn the league’s best record. Durant continued to be a scoring dynamo, and he was the most efficient he had been in his career. He scored 25.1 points per game and shot a career-high 53.7% from the field.

Curry and Thompson continued their stellar shooting, which created an offense that was essentially unstoppable. Curry shot 41.1% from the 3-point line, and Thompson shot 41.4%. The Warriors were the NBA’s most productive offense, averaging a league-high 115.9 points a game and having a league-best 114.8 offensive rating, according to NBA.com stats.

When the Finals came around, the Warriors played the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third straight season. As the reigning champs, the Cavs went 51-31 in the regular season and boasted perhaps the most talented team of their run. The duo of LeBron James and Kyrie Irving had Cleveland’s offense booming as both players averaged 25.2 points per game in the regular season.

But the Warriors had Durant — and he was the difference.

The Warriors had comfortably won the first two games of the series, but Game 3 was close. With under 50 seconds left, the Cavs were up 113-111. Durant dribbled down the floor and made his signature 3-point pull-up, rising over the outstretched arm of James. The Warriors won the game 118-113, and the Cavs only snagged Game 4 in the series.

Durant won his first title and Finals MVP, and the Warriors etched their name into history as one of the best teams ever.

2. The 2015 Warriors

2015 was when the Warriors began to instill fear.

The Warriors constructed a lineup aptly nicknamed “The Death Lineup” because of how effortlessly it broke down opponents. Teams had few solutions to defend the shooting of Curry and Thompson.

And with the complementary play of Andre Iguodala, Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green, Golden State had a group that made positionless basketball practical.

While the lineup highlighted Curry’s and Thompson’s shooting prowess, its defensive capabilities were just as meaningful.

Because of the versatility from Green, Barnes and Iguodala, the Warriors could switch throughout all positions. Thompson was also pivotal, with his perimeter defense helping secure the 3-point line. During that season, the Warriors ranked first in opponent field goal percentage (42.8%) and fifth in opponent 3-point percentage (33.7%).

Still, the Warriors were a budding team. Despite going 67-15 in the regular season, they hadn’t won anything yet.

They proved their worth in the Finals, as they defeated the Cavaliers in six games. Curry, Thompson and Green won their first titles, and Iguodala won Finals MVP. In 2015, the dynasty was born, and fear — particularly of how Curry and Thompson could stretch defenses — quickly arose.

3. The 2018 Warriors

Durant had one of his best postseasons ever in 2018, averaging 29.0 points per game on 48.7% shooting.

But the Warriors also encountered their stiffest competition yet in the Western Conference.

James Harden and the Houston Rockets were an offensive machine, with Harden being MVP for the season. He had scored 30.4 points per game, which had been a career-high at the time.

With Chris Paul by his side, Harden had the help of one of the league’s best floor generals. According to NBA.com stats, the Rockets had the league’s best offensive rating (114.1).

Golden State and Houston met in the Western Conference Finals, and the Rockets had the Warriors on the brink of elimination. Houston won Game 5 to go up 3-2, and then Thompson had a classic performance in Game 6. He scored 35 points and shot 9-of-14 from deep as the Warriors won 115-86.

Game 7 was when the Rockets faltered. They missed 27 straight threes, which shut down their hopes of advancing to the Finals. The Warriors won the game 101-92.

With the Warriors taking the series win, winning the 2018 Finals was easy against the underwhelming Cavs. Golden State swept Cleveland to win its last title of the decade.
