The Browns trade pair of late-round 2025 picks for Pro Bowl EDGE Za’Darius Smith

Cleveland sent two Day 3 picks to Minnesota in exchange for Smith and two later Day 3 picks

One of the core mantras of Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry is the relentless acquisition of talent. Berry has already used two future draft picks to acquire Pro Bowl EDGE Za’Darius Smith from the Minnesota Vikings.

The Browns traded away fifth-round picks in both 2024 and 2025 to the Vikings for Smith, who was due a hefty contract and had previously requested either a trade or a release. Minnesota also sends back two 2025 picks, one each in the sixth and seventh rounds, to Cleveland to complete the deal.

It’s a good example of the Browns using their draft capital to acquire talent to help the team, even if it eliminates future options. Most fans would be ecstatic if the sum of two Day 3 picks turned into a Pro Bowl pass rusher with 10 sacks in 2022, like Smith contributed in his one season in Minnesota.

The 2023 NFL draft sets the record for most trades

“We have a trade” was a common refrain during the 2023 NFL draft

The 2023 NFL draft was chock full of trades. It’s one of the prevailing themes of the draft weekend. So many trades, in fact, that the teams set a record.

When the Houston Texans traded up to pick No. 205 from the Buffalo Bills, it marked the 41st trade executed since the draft started on Thursday night. That sets the record for the most trades made during a draft.

Several teams made multiple trades, including the Detroit Lions, who made six of those 41 deals.

The Saints trade up before Day 3 even starts, select OL Nick Saldiveri

The New Orleans Saints traded up before Day 3 even started to select Old Dominion OL NIck Saldiveri

The third day of the NFL draft is often jam-packed with trades. The 2023 edition of the final four rounds kicked off with a trade before anyone was even on the clock.

The New Orleans Saints packaged together two picks and sent them to the Chicago Bears for the privilege of making the first pick on Saturday. Chicago acquired No. 115 and No. 165 overall in exchange for the No. 103 pick, the first of the fourth round.

With the pick, the Saints drafted Old Dominion OL Nick Saldiveri.

It’s very common for teams to maneuver around in the final rounds to target specific players. The Saints didn’t waste any time in getting their man in Saldiveri, who can play guard or tackle.

Look at everything the Broncos traded to the Seahawks for Russell Wilson

All the picks in the Russell Wilson trade have now been made. Here are all the players the Broncos traded to the Seahawks

One of the most highlighted trades in NFL history has finally run it’s course, as the Seattle Seahawks made all of the draft selections given to them in the trade for quarterback Russell Wilson.

It is hard to imagine that the Broncos thought they would be gift-wrapping the fifth overall pick after acquiring the franchise quarterback from Seattle. But after major struggles in his first season with Denver, that ultimately came to fruition. The Broncos can only hope it all becomes worth it with the addition of former Saints coach Sean Payton, who can come in and try to fix the embattled quarterback.

Ultimately the Seahawks landed the following pieces with the trade departure of Wilson:

-Quarterback Drew Lock

-Tight End Noah Fant

-Defensive lineman Shelby Harris (Free agent)

-2022 first round pick (9th overall): Charles Cross

-2022 second round pick (40th overall): Boye Mafe

-2022 fifth round pick  (158 overall): Tyreke Smith

-2023 first round pick (5th overall): Devon Witherspoon

-2023 second round pick (37 overall): Derick Hall

Looking back on this haul, it is hard to argue that the Seahawks did not win this trade should the trend of Wilson struggling, and the 2023 draft picks develop their high ceiling potential. Given how the Seahawks class from the year prior performed, it seems likely they will get similar production here.

Denver of course landed Russell Wilson, who hopes to turn his career around quickly so as not to sink the Denver franchise. They were also given a 2022 fourth-round pick which was spent on defensive end Eyimoa Uwazurike, who saw limited action as a rookie.

2021 NFL draft: Chargers trade possibilities using values chart

The Los Angeles Chargers could look to trade up or trade down in this year’s draft.

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco doesn’t do it often, but he’s not afraid to make trades on draft day.

In 2013, the Chargers traded the No. 45 overall selection in the second round and a fourth-rounder to the Cardinals to move up seven spots and picked linebacker Manti Te’o at No. 38.

In 2014, Telesco traded the No. 57 overall selection in the second round and a fourth-rounder to the Dolphins to move up seven spots to select edge rusher Jeremiah Attaochu at No. 50.

In 2015, the Bolts traded the No. 17 overall pick, a fourth-rounder and fifth-rounder in 2016 to the 49ers to move up two spots, where they ended up taking running Melvin Gordon at No. 15.

Last year, Los Angeles sent its 2020 second-round pick (No. 37) and third-round pick (No. 71) to the Patriots in exchange for the No. 23 selection to take linebacker Kenneth Murray.

If L.A. is looking to trade up in this year’s draft, it’s important to know the value of each pick and what they would have to give up to get or vice versa.

Former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson came up with a trade value chart years ago, which is still used today. It gives each pick in the draft a point value, which helps determine how much the other team should get in return.

Below is a chart of the value of every pick in this year’s draft:

Here are the values of every Chargers pick in the draft:

  • Round 1 (13): 1150 points
  • Round 2 (47): 430 points
  • Round 3 (77): 205 points
  • Round 3 (97): 112 points
  • Round 4 (118): 58 points
  • Round 5 (159): 26.2 points
  • Round 6 (185): 15.8 points
  • Round 6 (198): 10.6 points
  • Round 7 (241): 1 point

Here are a couple of reasonable trades that Los Angeles could look to make.

Chargers receive: No. 7 from DET (Acquire OT Penei Sewell)

Lions receive: No. 13, 47 (2nd), 159 (5th)

Note: Compensation from next year’s draft might be required when looking at trades from past drafts.

Chargers receive: No. 37 from PHI (Acquire OT Samuel Cosmi)

Eagles receive: No. 47, 97 (3rd)

If a team happens to be looking to trade up in front of the Chargers, here is an example of what they’d have to give up.

Chargers receive: No. 19 from WFT (Acquire OT Teven Jenkins), 51 (2nd)

Football Team receive: No. 13, No. 97 (3rd)

Twitter reacts to Bears’ selection of WR Darnell Mooney

Chicago found their speedster at the wide receiver position, making yet another trade to draft wide-out Darnell Mooney.

The Chicago Bears found their speedster at the wide receiver position, making yet another trade to draft wide-out Darnell Mooney.

General manager Ryan Pace traded up to select Mooney with the 173rd overall pick, trading a pair of sixth-round picks (196 and 200) and seventh-round pick (233) with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears also received the 227th overall selection in the deal as well.

Mooney brings an element that was missing from the Bears passing attack in 2019: Speed. The former Tulane standout led the team with 48 catches for 713 yards and five touchdowns last season. He also ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

The trade caught Twitter by surprise, but fans and experts had plenty to say about the team’s latest selection.

How are you feeling about the team’s selection of Mooney?
