Full 2023 NFL draft order

Check out the official seven-round selection order for the 2023 NFL draft

The 2023 NFL draft order has been officially released by the league, taking into account this year’s additional compensatory picks, as well as selections that have been forfeited by certain teams.

Here’s a look at every pick across all seven rounds of this year’s draft:

Saints awarded a single compensatory pick in 2023 NFL draft

Mr. Irrelevant could be a Saint. The New Orleans Saints were awarded a single compensatory pick in the 2023 NFL draft, almost (but not quite) at the end of Round 7:

Ring the bell: the New Orleans Saints received a single compensatory pick in the 2023 NFL draft following their free agent losses last offseason. Because of the value exchanged in losing left tackle Terron Armstead and free safety Marcus Williams while adding a veteran safety in Marcus Maye and a backup quarterback in Andy Dalton, the league office decided that the Saints earned a compensatory pick in the seventh round. It’s slotted at No. 257 overall.

That’s not the Mr. Irrelevant pick (the final selection in the draft), but it’s close. The Chicago Bears and Houston Texans own the last two picks before the Saints’ final choice, at Nos. 258 and 259. If the Saints trade down with Houston, whoever they choose will own that recognition. The compensatory pick formula is still shrouded in secrecy but experts at Over The Cap have gotten increasingly more accurate in predicting it year over year. They got it right this time.

We’re still waiting on the league office to finalize the draft order in the later rounds (when we’ll learn whether or not the Saints are losing their sixth rounder, traded to the Texans as a conditional pick for cornerback Bradley Roby) but for now here are where they’re slotted in:

  • Round 1, Pick 30 (via Denver, from Miami through San Francisco)
  • Round 2, Pick 41
  • Round 3, Pick 72
  • Round 4, Pick 116
  • Round 5, Pick 149
  • Round 5, Pick 168 (via Philadelphia)
  • Round 7, Pick 257

2023 NFL draft order: 1st-round picks locked in after Super Bowl LVII

Check out the updated first-round order for the 2023 NFL draft following the Super Bowl

The 2022 NFL season is officially over, as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles delivered an instant classic Sunday night in Super Bowl LVII, even if the ending was anticlimactic, thanks to yet another controversial call by the officials.

The final on-field showdown of the year also locked in the final two spots in the first-round order for the 2023 NFL draft.

Here’s an updated look at all 31 first-round slots in this year’s draft order:

*NOTE: The Miami Dolphins forfeited their first-round pick in next year’s draft as a result of the NFL’s investigation into tampering violations.

Chargers not projected to receive compensatory draft pick in 2023

As it stands, the Chargers have seven total draft picks.

In the 2023 NFL draft, the Chargers will not have a compensatory pick, according to Over The Cap.

The league awards 32 compensatory draft picks each year based on free-agent losses and gains by teams. If a team loses more free agents than it signs, they can receive draft compensation.

While they are not receiving, Los Angeles is giving.

Per Over The Cap’s projections, the Patriots could receive a fourth-round pick for J.C. Jackson. The Rams could get a sixth-round selection for Sebastian Joseph-Day.

The Chargers have seven total draft picks as it stands.

Round 1: No. 21

Round 2: No. 54

Round 3: No. 85

Round 4:

Round 5:

Round 6:

Round 7:

The rest of the picks will not be officially slotted until the league announces the 2023 compensatory picks ahead of the draft.

Broncos’ order of picks in 2023 NFL draft after Sean Payton trade

The Broncos are set to have back-to-back picks in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft.

After the San Francisco 49ers were knocked out of the NFL playoffs, the Denver Broncos were set to select 29th overall in the 2023 NFL draft.

Denver acquired that Niners pick through the Miami Dolphins in the Bradley Chubb trade mid-season last year. That trade put the Broncos back in the first round after the team traded their original first-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson trade last spring.

Now the pick is on the move once again.

The Broncos have agreed to trade the 29th overall pick (and a second-round pick next year) in exchange for ex-New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton (and a third-round pick next year).

After the Payton trade, Denver is now left with just five picks for the upcoming NFL draft.

Round 3: No. 67 via Colts (2022 draft trade)
Round 3: No. 68 own pick
Round 4: TBA own pick
Round 5: TBA own pick
Round 6: TBA via Steelers (Malik Reed trade)

The exact placement of the team’s selections in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds will not be confirmed until after the NFL announces compensatory picks later this offseason.

The Broncos could also acquire more picks, of course, through offseason trades. For now, though, the team is set to have five picks in April.

2023 NFL draft order: Updated 1st-round picks after Sean Payton trade

Check out the latest updates to the 2023 NFL draft order following new of the blockbuster trade for head coach Sean Payton

After weeks of rumors about where he might land, Sean Payton finally has his next head coaching job in the NFL.

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to trade Payton’s rights to the Denver Broncos, getting a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, and a second-rounder in 2024 in return for Payton and a third-round pick next year.

That means this year’s draft order needs another update, as the Saints will be back in the first round after trading their original top pick to the Philadelphia Eagles on draft weekend last year.

Here’s an updated look at the first-round order for the 2023 draft following Tuesday’s big trade:

2023 NFL draft order: Top 29 picks locked in after conference title games

Check out the updated first-round order for the 2023 NFL draft after Sunday’s conference championship games

And then there were two.

Sunday’s conference title games sent two teams to the Super Bowl, and also locked up two more slots in the first-round order for the 2023 NFL draft.

The San Francisco 49ers don’t have a first-round pick this year, but their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday locks in that pick for the Denver Broncos . . . unless that pick gets dealt for the third time (Sean Payton, perhaps?).

Here’s an updated look at the first-round order for this year’s draft:

*NOTE: The Miami Dolphins forfeited their first-round pick in next year’s draft as a result of the NFL’s investigation into tampering violations.

Broncos’ draft pick from 49ers keeps falling

As the 49ers continue advancing in the playoffs, the Broncos’ first-round draft pick continues falling.

The Denver Broncos traded their original 2023 first-round draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks last spring as part of the Russell Wilson trade. That pick ended up being fifth overall following Denver’s 5-12 record in 2022.

So the Broncos won’t have a high first-round pick in April, but they will have a late first-round selection following the Bradley Chubb trade last fall. As part of the Chubb trade, Denver acquired the San Francisco 49ers’ first-round pick (through the Miami Dolphins).

Unfortunately, the Niners’ pick keeps getting lower with each passing week. After San Francisco advanced to the NFC title game, the first-round selection won’t be any higher than No. 29 overall because the 49ers are one of the final four teams still alive in the postseason.

If San Francisco makes it all the way to the Super Bowl, the pick won’t be higher than No. 31. If they win the Super Bowl, the pick will be No. 32.

Of course, all of this will end up being a moot point if the Broncos end up trading the pick to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for coach Sean Payton. Unless/until that happens, though, we’ll be following the 49ers’ playoff run to see exactly where the first-round choice ends up.

2023 NFL draft order: Top 27 picks locked in after divisional round

Check out the updated first-round order for the 2023 NFL draft following the divisional playoff round

Another week of NFL playoff action is officially in the books, which means four more teams have locked in their first-round slot in the 2023 NFL draft order, at least until the trades start coming.

This weekend’s postseason action gave us a couple of blowouts, and a couple of nail-biters, leaving four teams left in this year’s chase for the Lombardi Trophy.

As we look ahead to the conference championships, here’s the updated first-round order for this year’s draft:

*NOTE: The Miami Dolphins forfeited their first-round pick in next year’s draft as a result of the NFL’s investigation into tampering violations.

Saints fans should continue rooting against the 49ers in the NFL playoffs

Saints fans should continue rooting against the 49ers. San Francisco’s first round draft pick will go to the Broncos, which they could trade for Sean Payton:

New Orleans Saints fans should be rooting against the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s divisional round playoff game with the Dallas Cowboys, even if pulling for Dallas is a little tough to swallow. San Francisco’s first round pick in the 2023 NFL draft will go to the Denver Broncos, which could be traded again to New Orleans for Sean Payton should he be hired as Denver’s new head coach.

It’s a little convoluted. The Broncos only own this pick because it was traded to them by the Miami Dolphins (in exchange for star pass rusher Bradley Chubb), who first received it from San Francisco when the 49ers moved up in the 2021 NFL draft targeting quarterback prospect Trey Lance. So if that selection eventually goes to New Orleans, it will be arriving from Denver by way of Miami through San Francisco. How’s that for traveling from coast to coast?

But Lance won’t be playing in this playoff elimination game with the Cowboys after suffering a season-ending injury back in September. Neither will his veteran backup Jimmy Garoppolo. Instead it’s on rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy, who has capably led the 49ers offense in their absence. The ferocious Dallas defense will be looking to bury him on Sunday evening, and Saints fans should hope they’re successful.

If the 49ers lose, San Francisco will be slotted in somewhere between picks No. 25 and 28. If they advance to the NFC title game, that selection moves back further and becomes less valuable. If the Saints have their eye on it, fans should be pulling for it to rise as high as possible in the first-round draft order. It’s another subplot to monitor during a weekend full of high-stakes playoff games. This 49ers-Cowboys game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. CT kickoff on FOX.
