Top California high school football recruits in the USA TODAY rankings

The best of California high school football recruiting for 2022

California high school football has neared an end to the 2021 season, with the playoff matchups narrowing to semifinals and finals across the state.

As usual, the Golden State is loaded with top talent that will be part of big-time NCAA programs for the 2022 season, from perennial USA TODAY Super 25 schools like Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Servite, and more. And once the championship games have been completed, all eyes will shift to the senior class’s coveted athletes and where each has decided to commit.

With that in mind, here are the current top recruits (and where they are headed in 2022 if a verbal has been made), according to the USA TODAY High School Sports Recruiting Rankings, which averages the grades from the three biggest recruiting services: 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals.

5-star 2022 CB Alabama target Domani Jackson decommits from USC

Could Alabama land the stellar 5-star prospect?

Domani Jackson, a five-star cornerback recruit in the 2022 class, decommitted from USC today, and has reopened his commitment, according to a graphic he shared to his Twitter.

Jackson, who currently plays at Mater Dei Academy in California, holds offers from nearly all of the heavy-hitting Power Five programs: Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and more.

While nothing has been said by Jackson regarding the future of his recruiting process, it is generally believed that he is leaning toward joining Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

In fact, Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports went as far as giving Alabama a ‘Crystal Ball,’ which means Wiltfong predicts Jackson will commit to Alabama.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Domani Jackson throughout his recruiting process.

Top Michigan target, five-star Domani Jackson, decommits from USC, plans visit

This is huge news!

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01f5k5y2jb3twsvdg4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Michigan football has been long after 2022 Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei five-star cornerback Domani Jackson, who has become best friends with current Wolverines five-star commit Will Johnson. The two had talked about being a package deal, but Jackson pulled the trigger for USC on Jan. 23.

However, with the Trojans being in flux after having fired Clay Helton in Week 2, the question has remained: will Jackson remain committed to USC?

Finally, on Sunday, the answer is no, as he’s decommitted from the school, according to 247Sports’ Greg Biggins.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei defensive back Domani Jackson has de-committed from USC and is re-opening his recruitment.

Jackson has been a strong pledge to USC since committing back in January. He still took multiple visits to Michigan and Alabama and there was always a feeling he could open things up at some point.

What’s more, Jackson has long called Michigan his dream school. His parents aren’t originally from Temecula, Calif. as they hail originally from Youngstown, Ohio. He and his family visited Ann Arbor for the Week 2 game against Washington, which appeared to give the Wolverines the upper hand. However, since then, Alabama has seemed to gain traction after a weekend visit.

But he will be coming back, yet again, for another visit, this time for the big one — The Game.

Michigan is a school that Jackson has long been tied to as well and he has visited multiple times and has one more trip coming up.

“I’m going out there for the Ohio State game (Nov. 27) at the end of the month,” Jackson said. “I’ve always liked Michigan and that’s going to be a great environment. My dad will be coming out with me and it’s always a great time with the players and coaches out there.”

As mentioned, Jackson is set to sign during the Early Period and has a commitment date locked in as well.

“I’m going to commit on ESPN on the first day of the Early Signing Period (Dec. 15),” Jackson said. “I think after these couple of trips, I’ll have plenty of time to sit down with my family and figure this all out. The USC visit will be fun and even though I’m not committed there any more, I’m still looking forward to it.

“There will be a lot of other recruits I’m close with there too. I don’t need to see Bama again since I was just there and then the Michigan trip will be a great time too. I’m an early grad and I want to be on campus in time for spring ball so excited to play this out.”

Jackson is rated No. 6 overall according to the 247Sports Composite in 2022.

As recruiting for the high school football class of 2022 picks up, more and more schools are seeing who may be its superstars of the future.

The majority of the Pac-12 has struggled with recruiting, as Stanford and Oregon have combined for the same number of five- and four-star recruits as the other 10 schools.

Here’s a dive into the top-10 ranked players, according to the USA TODAY High School Sports Composite Player Rankings, The list averages the grades from the three biggest recruiting services: 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals.

Randy, 5-star Domani Jackson’s dad, dishes about official visit to Michigan

Really, really, really good stuff from the father of one of the nation’s most coveted recruits!

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01f5k5y2jb3twsvdg4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

If you’re trying to get a beat on what 2022 Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei five-star cornerback Domani Jackson is going to do, you can find plenty of conflicting messages out in the ether.

Still currently committed to USC, Jackson has a decision to make. The Trojans fired head coach Clay Helton after his Week 2 loss to Stanford, which means that there will be a new staff in Los Angeles. At the moment, Jackson’s primary recruiter, Donté Williams, is the interim head coach, but there are no guarantees that he’ll remain in his post once a new coach is named.

Meanwhile, Jackson is coming off of an official visit to Ann Arbor with his family, and it couldn’t have been better timing. The Wolverines’ Week 2 atmosphere for its prime time night game hosting Washington was electric, and there were a bevy of other elite recruits in attendance taking in the 31-10 win. While Jackson has been on campus before, it was the first time that he was able to actually take in a game at Michigan, which he’s long considered his dream school.

The Visit

WolverinesWire spoke with Jackson’s father, Randy, on Wednesday, and the elder Jackson provided some details from his own perspective about the visit, starting with attending the game itself.

“It was kind of a surreal experience,” Jackson said. “People actually knew who Domani was. They weren’t shy about letting him know they wanted him to play for Michigan. And actually being there and seeing the facilities, going through them, and the staff — they have an amazing staff there. They answered all of our questions. There was a lot of connection there. And then The Big House and the maize out. That was unreal!”

Jackson’s primary recruiter is defensive pass game coordinator Steve Clinkscale, and while the recruit and coach have been forging a connection since Clinkscale joined the staff in late spring, there’s been a connection brewing between his father and the secondary coach.

The Jackson family isn’t originally from Southern California. Actually, they hail from the same place that Clinkscale calls home, in Youngstown, Ohio. And the thing about Youngstown is, even if you leave, it never leaves you.

“There’s a lot of similarities — both of us being from Youngstown, Ohio,” Jackson said. “The mentality is pretty much the same. Blue-collar, hard work, get after it mentality, not a lot of talking. Not a lot of glamor, not a lot of flash, but at the end of the day, working your butt off and earning everything you get. That helped establish a pretty good relationship between us.”

Did you have any moments with the coaching staff where you got to know them differently?

The Jackson family got a chance to sit and talk with pretty much the entire coaching staff, Randy says, but the focus wasn’t on the recruitment side of things. Instead, the coaches and staff got to know them more as people. “It was a visit, but it wasn’t all about football,” he said. “It was about a lot of other things. So football-wise, I’d say it was probably the minimal that we talked about.”

[lawrence-related id=43639,43524,43516]

If you’ve followed along with Jackson’s recruitment at any stage along the way, then you already know how close he is with current Michigan commit Will Johnson, a fellow five-star cornerback. At one point, the duo considered themselves a package deal, both considering Michigan, Ohio State and USC. However, on Jan. 23, Jackson pulled the trigger for the Trojans while Johnson mulled over his options. Just over a month later, after having visited USC unofficially with Jackson, Johnson opted to follow in his father Deon’s footsteps and don the winged helmet.

The relationship goes beyond the two prospects, however, as the Jackson and Johnson families have forged a bond between the parents as well.

“To be honest with you, I think this is one of the things, going through the process of the recruitment and playing 7-on-7, going on visits, he and Will have established an extremely close friendship,” Jackson said. “That has, of course, the families have established a close friendship, as well. I talk to Deon all the time and we text, we call, we talk. A thing that will go well beyond football.”

Five-star Mater Dei CB Domani Jackson out for season with injury

USC commit Domani Jackson will miss the remainder of his senior year with an injury.

No. 1 Mater Dei’s secondary was dealt a major blow on Saturday, as it was announced five-star cornerback and USC commit Domani Jackson will miss the remainder of his senior year due to an injury.

“Domani is a true Monarch,” Mater Dei head coach Bruce Rollinson said in a statement. “He lives by the three stripes and has made a major impact on the Monarch football program over the past three and a half years. He is a dual-sport athlete and holds the state record in track for the 100M. He has taken care of his academics and will graduate early to attend USC. He’s one of the most highly recruited players in the nation and has taken all the media attention in stride.

I love this kid, I love his attitude and I love the way he’s handled everything that has been thrown at him. Needless to say, this is the worst part of football.”

Jackson is expected to make a full recovery from his injury, but will not be able to return to the field before the end of the 2021 high school football season. Mater Dei is currently the top-ranked team in the USA TODAY Super 25 and will host Liberty (Nev.) at home next weekend.

“He is a tremendous example to our younger players and will continue to develop and coach up our secondary,” Rollinson said. “Domani understands what the brotherhood is all about and we will all be a part of his comeback. If anyone can handle this adversity, it’s Domani Jackson.”

Top 2022 cornerback recruit Domani Jackson commits to USC

The top cornerback in the class of 2022 according to 247Sports is off the board.

The top cornerback in the class of 2022 according to 247Sports is off the board.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei’s Domani Jackson committed to USC on Saturday. Jackson was long rumored to land with the Trojans, as his 247Sports Crystal Ball read 100% in favor of USC at the time of his announcement.

“I really think with the class USC signed this year and the players we could get in my class, we’ll have a team that can compete for a National Championship,” Jackson told 247Sports’ Gregg Biggins. “That’s always the dream, to be able to play for a championship in your hometown and help the local school get back on top.

“I look at the players going to USC now, Korey (Foreman), Kyron (Ware-Hudson), Ceyair (Wright) and my class is going to be stacked. That was the biggest reason why I wanted to commit early, I want to start building this class and help recruit other players and I’m excited about who I think we’ll be getting.”

Jackson is the No. 3 overall prospect in his class according to the industry-generated 247Sports composite rankings. USC’s 2022 recruiting class now ranks seventh nationally and first in the Pac 12 with the local product in the fold.

“Athletic, good-sized cornerback with speed (4.5 forty as a freshman), quickness and explosiveness,” 247Sports’ Brandon Huffman said in his scouting report of Jackson. “Still relatively new to the position, making the transition from receiver, but showed elite level coverage ability, ball skills, play diagnosis and closing speed.

“Plays with physicality, can bump and press but also play off and defend the pass. Smooth backpedal and quick hips make him a natural at cornerback. Projects as an immediate Power 5 contributor and potential NFL First Round Pick.”

Ohio State misses out on No. 1 rated 2022 cornerback

Adding the No. 1 corner in the 2022 class would’ve been nice, but it wasn’t meant to be. Ohio State still has the No. 1 overall class.

Well, you can’t win them all. We told you in November that Ohio State made the shortlist for the No. 1 cornerback in the 2022 recruiting cycle, Domani Jackson. Today, Jackson made a verbal commitment to USC.

Ultimately, the Mater Dei High School product chose to stay close to home. Southern Cal was the only school to make the final cut in Jackson’s home state of California beating out OSU, Michigan, Clemson, and Arizona State.

All is not lost though. The Buckeyes do seem to be making a push for another top rated corner in the 2022 class in Will Johnson from Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Johnson has long been considered a Michigan Wolverine lean, but Ohio State is trying to make a case why Columbus would be a great place to play.

Ohio State currently has the No. 1 rated recruiting class for 2022.

High-priority 2022 Michigan target commits to USC

Michigan football got a big blow on Saturday when the five-star cornerback committed to USC over the Wolverines.

[jwplayer nuuBWgOG-XNcErKyb]

At one time, he called Michigan football a dream school, but the lure of being close to home when you’re already out West always is a big factor.

Michigan is certainly seeking to upgrade its secondary through recruiting, and 2022 has a pair of cornerback targets that are tied at the hip. Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei has always been something of a USC feeder school, but the Wolverines pulled wideout Cristian Dixon in 2021, the hope was it would be able to do the same with cornerback Domani Jackson. Not only is Jackson the No. 3 player in the country, regardless of position, but fellow five-star Will Johnson — the Michigan legacy from Grosse Pointe (MI) South — has expressed that the duo would like to be a package deal.

In order for that to happen, they’d have to pick either USC, Michigan or Ohio State.

Unfortunately for the Wolverines, one domino has fallen, with Jackson announcing on Saturday that he intends to become a Trojan.

[lawrence-related id=32572]

Still, there’s a long ways until signing day for the 2022 class, and Michigan certainly won’t let up its pursuit, even if Jackson is now verbally committed to USC. If it can pull Johnson, then the new coaching staff — spearheaded by defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and voracious recruiter, co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist — could further work to flip Jackson back into the Wolverines’ good graces.

However, for now, Michigan is more than a step behind, with Jackson having professed his intention to play in Los Angeles.
