Former five-star Michigan football target enters portal

The dream of the dynamic duo is still alive. #GoBlue

This is the day many Wolverine fans have been waiting for — Domani Jackson is in the transfer portal.

Michigan fans will remember Jackson as a top cornerback target alongside Will Johnson in the class of 2022. Jackson, who was raised a Michigan fan, took a late visit to Ann Arbor but ended up sticking with USC largely due to defensive backs coach Donte Williams. Well, Williams just left USC for a new post at Georgia and Jackson looks to be trying his luck in the portal.

Michigan should be heavily involved here for a few reasons. The most obvious is the glaring need for help at boundary corner. Josh Wallace and Mike Sainristil will both be moving on after this season which leaves Michigan with spots up for grabs on the depth chart. Ja’Den McBurrows has played well in the past few games and should be taking over the nickel spot, but there are no proven players on the outside. Michigan could look for Amorion Walker, Jyaire Hill, or DJ Waller as replacements, but none of them are proven talents and it would be a risk, to say the least.

Jackson started for USC this season and posted 32 total tackles, three pass breakups, and no interceptions. He had a rocky season but a lot of his miscues can be chalked up to poor scheme and a generally bad unit. Jackson still holds the potential of a five-star player who can be elevated with the right coaching. Landing him be huge for Michigan’s next season as Jackson is the type of athlete who can be molded into a first-round pick. It is also worth noting that Jackson battled a leg injury as a senior in high school, and last year was his first fully healthy season since he was a junior.

As a recruit, Jackson was given a 247Sports consensus grade of .9952 which made him the fifth overall player in the 2022 class and the top cornerback nationally.

USC’s Domani Jackson is expected to enter the transfer portal

Another five-star recruit leaves USC.

The USC Trojans are losing five-star recruits. First, quarterback Malachi Nelson entered the transfer portal in a story which broke on Sunday evening. Less than 20 hours later, news broke that five-star cornerback Domani Jackson is expected to enter the portal.

There’s a lot to unpack here. Jackson has dealt with injuries which limited his ability to get on the field. However, in 2023, he did not make significant forward steps in his overall evolution and development.

An obvious question: How much did Alex Grinch limit his development at USC? Anyone who believes Domani Jackson can still be an elite player would say that if Jackson gets quality coaching, he can live up to his potential.

An obvious follow-up question: How much did the departure of Donte Williams have to do with Jackson’s decision to enter the transfer portal? It’s not a secret that Williams built very strong relationships with players he recruited. Williams’ departure was announced on Saturday. Was Domani Jackson waiting to see what would happen with Donte Williams? Is that what was happening here?

While we wrestle with these questions, we can plainly point out that D’Anton Lynn and Lincoln Riley were unable to retain Domani Jackson. People will fiercely debate how problematic this is for USC. It certainly raises a lot of questions.

Lincoln Riley says Domani Jackson is ‘getting better each and every day’

Riley sees progress and development in one of his cornerbacks on the 2023 #USC roster.

Lincoln Riley likes what he sees from cornerback Domani Jackson in the early stages of USC’s preseason camp, with the season opener just three and a half weeks away.

USC’s first game of the season is on August 26 against San Jose State. Given that today is August 1, USC football begins later this month. We’re that close to the beginning of a much-anticipated campaign.

One player USC will count on this year is cornerback Domani Jackson, who was injured for the vast majority of the 2022 season. USC hopes that Jackson and other players who were injured last year can be healthy for all or most of the schedule. The Trojans can develop depth on their roster if they can simply get better injury luck in a few specific cases. Jackson is one.

Lincoln Riley talked to 247Sports about Jackson’s evolution in the USC secondary:

“We’ve got to get him settled into a point where he can really turn loose and play aggressive all the time because when he does that, you see the strength, you see the length, you see the top end speed,” Riley said. “And he’s learning to use that more aggressively, learning when he can. Each day he just gets a little more confident. The mistakes are starting to trim down, the positive plays are starting to go up. And that’s going to be a process.

“We compared it with Ceyair (Wright). Ceyair started nine games for us last year. Ceyair played a lot of football for us last year. And there are things that are just now with him, starting to click in place where he started to really play closer to his capability. And so Domani is on that similar climb. But it’s been very positive. He’s pushed through, he’s learning what it takes at this level, and he’s getting better each and every day and the talent there is undeniable.”

Domani Jackson talks about his learning curve as a college football player

The education of Domani Jackson is taking shape. The cornerback thinks it’s making a difference this summer.

Domani Jackson, injured last season, had a lot of time to study and learn about playing college football. This isn’t high-school ball. This is a much higher level of competition. The best way to learn is to play live games. Jackson wasn’t able to do a lot of that in 2022. He is trying to make up for lost time on the practice field. He is getting up to speed at USC’s preseason camp, which began this past Friday, July 28.

Jackson discussed his evolution as a college football player with 247Sports.

“Knowing just the real meaning of being a cornerback,” Jackson said. “In high school, it was all about just lining up and putting a dude in front of you. College is a whole different situation. You gotta learn Cover Two, Cover Three, how to play man, off, on, press technique is completely different.”

Jackson credits position coach Donte Williams with helping him to take the next steps as a football player.

“He really taught me the game of football,” Jackson said. “Honestly, I didn’t really know too much about the position, the techniques and whatnot. But his technique is probably the best in the game. So I listen to everything, every technique he gives me. And just make sure I do it every play.”

Notable is that Jackson has worked exclusively at cornerback to this point in preseason camp. He isn’t being coached to play multiple positions in a secondary where some players might be shuffled around in August or once the season starts (or both).

Domani Jackson will be a point of focus in USC spring game

Few #USC players will draw more attention at the spring game than Jackson, whom the Trojans need to keep healthy.

Every projected starter and a lot of backups at important positions will be watched intently at USC football’s spring game on Saturday. Many different names and faces will draw attention and interest. However, among the three or four most eagerly-followed players on the Trojans’ roster, one would have to include Domani Jackson.

The cornerback briefly played last season but was injured and ultimately unable to stay on the field very long. It is hard to ignore what might have been for this defense had Jackson been healthy. It’s an absence which — combined with other injuries to Romello Height and Eric Gentry — eroded the depth of a defense which was wafer-thin to begin with. It’s not as though Alex Grinch did a great job, but it’s certainly true that he didn’t have a full complement of resources.

Getting a full season of Domani Jackson is paramount for USC in 2023, and that’s why his involvement in the spring game will be one of the top storylines.

6 coaches Brent Venables should consider for Sooners’ vacant defensive backs job

As the Oklahoma Sooners continue to build their coaching staff, here are six names they should consider to be their next defensive backs coach.

The Oklahoma Sooners seem pretty much complete in overhauling their defensive coaching staff after none of the position coaches from the previous regime are set to return.

Only two coaching vacancies remain as defensive ends, safeties, and linebackers are all accounted for. Cornerbacks and a coach for their interior defensive line are all that remains.

We’ll look at the cornerback position to try to piece together some viable candidates.

With Lincoln Riley at the helm, star CB Domani Jackson re-commits to USC

With Lincoln Riley as head coach, USC signed Domani Jackson, one of the top players in the class of 2022.

In late November, after visiting Alabama, five-star cornerback Domani Jackson decommitted from USC. The Trojans didn’t have a coach, and Jackson saw an opening to reconsider whether he wanted to join the legacy of the Crimson Tide, commit to a Michigan program that he had previously called his “dream school,” or return to USC.

Oh how the times have changed.

With Lincoln Riley in tow, Jackson signed with the Trojans on Friday. The Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) star tweeted a photo with graphics of himself overlooking the Coliseum. In one of the graphics, Jackson is holding the 2016 Jim Thorpe trophy that former USC star Adoree’ Jackson won.

USC tweeted a video welcoming the star to the school.

Jackson is ranked as the No. 3 player (tied) in the class of 2022 in the USA TODAY High School Sports Recruiting Rankings. He emerged as a star at Mater Dei as a sophomore, looking like one of the better cornerbacks in the nation regardless of class, but his high school season was ended prematurely due to a knee injury.

He’ll be back, just as he returned to USC after initially decommitting. Jackson is staying home.

Alabama loses two 5-star recruits on same day to different programs with new coaches

Alabama strikes out on two 5-stars, losing them to two big programs with new high-profile coaches.

Alabama finished the Early Signing Day with the No. 2 overall 2022 recruiting class, and also managed to land a former five-star recruit in LSU transfer cornerback Eli Ricks.

Following Early National Signing Day, a few high-profile recruits made their commitments public, of those included two Alabama target five-star players: tight end Jaleel Skinner and cornerback Domani Jackson.

Skinner played high school ball at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and he will stay in the state to play for the Miami Hurricanes and new head coach Mario Cristobal, who recently departed from his former head coaching job at Oregon.

It’s worth noting that Skinner was originally verbally committed to Alabama since early October, but rescinded his verbal commitment today, as he signed with Miami.

Jackson is a five-star cornerback out of California’s Mater Dei, the same school Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young attended. However, Jackson, despite drawing heavy interest from Alabama, will be staying in-state to attend USC and be coached by Lincoln Riley.

Alabama did manage to land four-star athlete Kendrick Law today to add serious depth to the defensive 2022 recruiting class.
