Four-Star corner de-commits from Ohio State

Four-Star corner de-commits from Ohio State #GoBucks

Today has been a give-and-take situation for the Ohio State football team. They earned the commitment of four-star quarterback, Brock Glenn, but lost the commitment of four-star cornerback, Dijon Johnson. The Tampa, Florida, native has an extremely high ceiling and ideal size at 6-foot, 190-pounds and was a consensus top 100 player by nearly every service, so this loss stings.

It is no secret that the last few weeks of recruiting for Ohio State has been downright pathetic, but the ship isn’t sinking. It is not yet time to panic and he may decide to recommit at some point, but it is not a particularly good sign that this de-commitment comes after his visit to Florida.

Johnson’s de-commitment brings the 2023 class down to 19 players, but they still have three cornerbacks that remain committed.

Florida hosted this top-100 DB during a busy recruiting weekend

Could Billy Napier be looking to flip another blue-chip recruit? Dijon Johnson, a four-star defensive back committed to Ohio State, was in town for Friday Night Lights.

The Florida Gators are in the middle of their busiest recruiting weekend of the summer right now as Friday Night Lights and the team cookout take place. The visitors’ list heading into the weekend was long and filled with blue-chip talent, but there were a few names that showed up unexpectedly.

One of those names is four-star defensive back [autotag]Dijon Johnson[/autotag] out of Wharton High (Tampa, Florida). Johnson, or “Mustard” as he’s affectionately called, committed to Ohio State in April, but he’s clearly still taking a look at other programs. The expectation was for him to pop up at the Miami recruiting cookout on Saturday, but Johnson told 247Sports that he was staying in town for Florida’s cookout instead.

This is the second trip Johnson has made to UF within the week. He and his dad were on campus to meet with cornerback coach [autotag]Corey Raymond[/autotag]. He could be seen spending most of his time with Raymond or co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag]. The dead period ended on Monday and starts back up in August.

There’s no guarantee that Johnson backs off his pledge to OSU, but things look shaky at best right now with that commitment and Florida is primed to swoop in if he does change his mind. It also seems like this is one of the recruits Florida will have a leg up on against Miami, but that could (and has) changed in a heartbeat with other players this cycle.

The Gators already have a trio of in-state four-star defensive backs in the class, Osceola cornerback [autotag]Ja’Keem Jackson[/autotag] (Kissimmee), West Orange (Winter Garden) safety [autotag]Jordan Castell[/autotag] and Bartram Trail (Jacksonville)cornerback [autotag]Sharif Denson[/autotag].

Johnson would be the highest ranked of the bunch at No. 93 overall on the 247Sports composite. He’s also ranked No. 10 among cornerbacks in the class of 2023.

Florida recruiting insider predicts Dijon Johnson will flip to Gators

Not good if this turns out to be true. #GoBucks

It has been a wild ride for Ohio State recruiting over the past several months, to say the least. While the Buckeyes have seemed to be humming on the offensive side of the ball, defensive recruiting just can’t seem to find its footing.

Even with OSU leading the way with what is currently the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, it’s the offense that is carrying the weight at this point. And recent defensive losses on the recruiting trail haven’t helped matters at all. Losing out on the likes of Troy Bowles, Tackett Curtis, and most recently Caleb Downs leaves the coaching staff looking for who might be next to round out the 2023 class.

Well, things might get worse before it gets better. Florida insider, Corey Bender has now given a prediction that current Ohio State cornerback commitment Dijon Johnson will flip to the Gators.

Johnson committed to the Buckeyes back in April of this year but is a Tampa, Florida native, so it wouldn’t be inconceivable that he’d desire to be closer to home. He is the No. 10 ranked cornerback in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings..

Of course, nothing is ever set in stone until a player puts pen to paper, but this certainly doesn’t look good. The “experts” have been wrong before, but it seems one would want to have a good deal of confidence before making a prediction like this.

Should Johnson decide to have a change of heart, Ohio State will still have Calvin Simpson-Hunt and Kayin Lee as committed corners. But another loss on the recruiting trail may be cause for concern in Columbus.

Ohio State Football Recruiting: 2023 class commitment tracker

Ohio State Football Recruiting: 2023 class commitment tracker #GoBucks

The Ohio State football recruiting freight train is chugging along for the class of 2023 and as of right now 247 Sports , On3 and Sports Illustrated has ranked the Ohio State recruiting class number two in the country. As it currently stands on July 5, 2022, the Buckeyes have two five-star commits, 13 four-star commits, and a three-star legacy commit.

There were early concerns that the 2023 recruiting cycle may not be as kind to Ohio State as the state of Ohio looks to have a down year as far as talent and the reclassification of Sonny Styles, only makes that talent even more shallow, but Ryan Day and his crew are proving that big things are on the horizon no matter what recruiting obstacles they face.

Here is the recruiting tracker for the Ohio State recruiting class for 2023.

Ohio State football now has top recruiting class for 2023

Ohio State now has top 247Sports Composite recruiting class for 2023 #GoBucks

It feels like every day a new top recruit announces their allegiance and intentions to enroll at Ohio State. Last week three top receivers committed and this week we have already had a top cornerback announce his commitment

Now, it is still very early in the recruiting process, but if Ohio State can maintain its recruiting momentum, the Buckeyes will finish with the top class in all of college football. The most recent commitment from Kayin Lee allowed Ohio State to edge out Notre Dame and Texas for the top class in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The following are the current commits to Ohio State:

  1. Brandon Inniss, WR, 5 Star
  2. Carnell Tate, WR, 5 Star
  3. Luke Montgomery, OT, 4 Star
  4. Noah Rogers, WR, 4 Star
  5. Dijon Johnson, CB, 4 Star
  6. Ty Lockwood, TE, 4 Star
  7. Kayin Lee, CB, 4 Star
  8. Malik Hartford, S, 4 Star
  9. Joshua Padilla, IOL, 4 Star
  10. Cedrick Hawkins, S, 4 Star
  11. Mark Fletcher, RB, 4 Star
  12. Austin Siereveld, IOL, 4 Star
  13. Bryson Rodgers, WR, 4 Star
  14. Will Smith, DL, 3 Star

That’s quite the haul already with still plenty of room and plenty of prospects still looking at Ryan Day and the OSU program. Day is on pace to top 300 points for this class with a few more marquee players according to the 247Sports Composite, and that’s rare air indeed if you follow these sorts of things.

BOOM! Ohio State lands four-star 2023 cornerback from Florida

BOOM! Ohio State landed a four-star cornerback on Sunday. #GoBucks

Ohio State has landed a four-star cornerback, it’s first of the 2023 class. Out of Wharton High School in Tampa, Florida, Dijon Johnson committed to the Buckeyes on Sunday, one day after visiting campus for the spring game.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, the 6-foot, 1-inch, 190-pound Johnson is ranked as the No. 29 cornerback and 265th overall prospect in the 2023 cycle. He chose OSU over other offers from the likes of Oklahoma, USC, Alabama, Auburn, and many others.

Johnson makes the fourth prospect from the sunshine state to commit to Ohio State already this year joining Bryson Rodgers, Cedrick Hawkins, and Mark Fletcher. It’ll be interesting to see if Ohio State continues to mine the state of Florida for the rest of this cycle with so many connected guys.

The commitment of Johnson brings the haul for the 2023 class to nine commitments and boosts Ohio State to the No. 2 overall class according to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings.

Ohio State football recruiting: Dijon Johnson commits; Dylan Raiola, others visit

Highly ranked prospects and top-tier quarterbacks crowded Columbus for Ohio State’s spring game.

Ohio State football’s spring game served as more than an exhibition contest. There was massive recruitment activity on the sidelines, according to several outlets and social media.

Dozens of recruits, primarily from the 2023 and 2024 classes, visited Ohio State over the weekend for the Buckeyes’ spring game. The exact number wasn’t clear as of Sunday afternoon, with reports prior to the game varying from more than 30 (per Cleveland.com) to at least 50 (Eleven Warriors).

Regardless of unclarity over the exact number, the weekend paid immediate dividends and even secured a recruit before Easter even concluded. Four-star cornerback Dijon Johnson announced on Sunday that he has committed to Ohio State.

“I have always thought that could be the pick for me,” he said to 247Sports. “It just wasn’t an in the moment thing. It was always like my top school with it being my dream school.”

Johnson is ranked the No. 29 cornerback and No. 265 player in the country. The 6-foot-1 Wharton (Tampa, Fla.) CB chose Ohio State over 35 other offers, according to 247Sports.

Florida brings in impressive amount of recruits for first day of spring practice

Florida kicked off spring practice on Tuesday and a host of impressive recruits were in attendance.

Everyone is excited to see what Florida is like under new head coach Billy Napier. Fans and media members can only see snippets of what is going on in practices until the Orange and Blue game on April 16, but recruits can see whole practices when they visit the Swamp. On the first day of spring practice, Florida hosted over 15 prospects as it kicked things off on Tuesday.

Some of the elite names to stop by includes four-star linebacker Troy Bowles, four-star wide receiver Bryson Rodgers, four-star cornerback Dijon Johnson, four-star pass-catcher Eugene Wilson III, four-star offensive tackle Lucas Simmons and four-star linebacker and Michigan commit Raylen Wilson.

Eugene and Rodgers sit pretty close to the top of Florida’s wide receiver board. This will be Eugene’s second visit to the Gators this month, naming the Orange and Blue his leader after his first visit. For Rodgers, this is his first visit under the new staff.

For Johnson and Simmons, it’s their first visit to see Florida under Napier too. Johnson’s name has soared up the Gators defensive blackboard after a strong performance at the Under Armour event in Miami last month. Also, Napier, Rob Sale and Darnell Stapleton have impressed Simmons so far and finally got him on campus.

Look for more prospects to visit throughout this week and then a flurry of them over the weekend.

Sooners set to host an elite crop of talent this weekend; here’s who will be in attendance

After a highly successful Junior Day in January, the Sooners are set to host another one this weekend. Here’s who’s coming to Norman.

For the second time in the first full recruiting cycle of the Brent Venables era, the Oklahoma Sooners are set to host a massive recruiting event. The first Junior Day went well according to recruiting experts across the industry. It featured major names as the Sooners continue to establish their 2023 recruiting board under Brent Venables.

The first junior day took place in January and was pretty hefty in terms of the number of bodies on campus. This list may top the January one in size and sheer talent that will be in the building.

We’ve taken the liberty again of mapping out the confirmed visitors for this weekend.

Class of 2023

Four-star WR Jaquaize Pettaway

Four-star DL Jordan Renaud

Four-star OL Miles McVay

Four-star EDGE Colton Vasek

Four-star ATH Mikal Harrison-Pilot

Four-star DB Dijon Johnson

Four-star LB Derion Gullette

Four-star DL Edric Hill

Four-star OL Wilkin Formby

Three-star OL Joshua Bates (Oklahoma commit)

Three-star LB S’maje Burrell

Three-star ATH Moussa Kane

Three-star DB Jayden Bonsu

Three-star DB Landon Hale

Three-star DB Kaleb Spencer

Three-star ATH Samuel Omosigho

Four-star OL Cayden Green

Five-star RB Richard Young

On top of the juniors who dominate the list, the Sooners have a few 2024 sophomore visitors who will be in attendance. Of course for the Sooners, they would never turn down the chance to have a recruit on campus no matter their classification.

Class of 2024

DL Williams Nwaneri

Four-star ATH KJ Bolden

Four-star DL Nigel Smith

For Oklahoma, this is another opportunity to re-establish this program’s identity under Venables. For all of the talk about what type of culture he wants, Venables and his staff get that opportunity to show what it means to have OUDNA and what Norman can offer the next generation of Sooners.

Coach talks Clemson’s interest in Florida corner, compares him to NFL DB

Last week, Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed stopped by Wharton High School, home to one of the fastest-rising prospects in the country in 2023 three-star cornerback Dijon Johnson. The Clemson Insider caught up with Johnson’s head coach, Mike …

Last week, Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed stopped by Wharton High School, home to one of the fastest-rising prospects in the country in 2023 three-star cornerback Dijon Johnson.

The Clemson Insider caught up with Johnson’s head coach, Mike Williams, and found out more about Reed’s visit to their campus last week.

“We have a good relationship with the Clemson staff and I think it started with Coach (Brent) Venables and Todd Bates,” Williams said. “I know they are not with the staff anymore, moving on to Oklahoma. They kind of got the ball rolling and Coach Reed stepped in and he’s been kind of the point man on that. He’s been doing a good job, just his presence in general in our area of Tampa.”

“I just think they’re doing their due diligence. They said he’s an offer-level guy. They said he’s a guy they want to offer and things like that. We’ll see how it goes. That’s as far as I know about it. They like him as a player. They think he’s an offer-level player.”

Johnson was Wharton’s leading receiver two years ago. They had a playoff game where there was a wideout giving them some trouble, he had two touchdowns and was aiming to score another. Williams stuck Johnson on him and his day was done for the second half. The rest is history.

Johnson is a very talented player, but he’s also a hard worker. He’s the type of kid, who will show up 30 minutes early for workouts and be the last one to leave.

“He’s just a great kid,” Williams said. “He’s a manager at Popeyes. He works a bunch of hours during the week, outside of school and football. I just can’t say enough about him. I just think he’s a great kid. I think he’s a pro, honestly. I think he has the makeup to play on Sundays. Not just physically, but mentally and how he approaches the game.

“I just think [Dijon], he just represents what you want all these young dudes to represent, which is focus on being a good person, not being cocky and arrogant and not always trying to bring attention to yourself when you come in the room. He’s just a good kid and he’s got a real bright future ahead of him.”

There are not many kids that are cut from the same cloth as Johnson. How many high school football players with the offers that Johnson has are a manager at a local fast-food restaurant? It just speaks to his leadership abilities, on and off the field.

It also shows where his mind is at.

“Outside of sports, I just think he has the right makeup to grow up to be a good man,” Williams said, “and I think that takes kids a lot farther than their physical abilities.”

Johnson’s physical abilities at the cornerback position are a sight to behold, though.

Williams is curious to see where Johson ends up, but in his personal opinion, he thinks he’ll finish his high school career as a cornerback. Then, when Johnson gets to the next level, he’ll eventually transition to an interchangeable defensive back and be an elite safety from day No. 1.

“I think he’s Derwin James,” Williams said. “That’s who I think he is. I just think he’s a guy that can impact any level of the defense, whether he’s on the outside, whether he’s a nickel guy or whether he’s a safety.

“I think [Dijon] is gonna be one of those guys that’s overly long, but he has legit cover skills. You can’t out physical him by putting the tight end there. I just think he’s gonna be a really good player and I think that’s why it’s important to make sure we get him around the right coaching staff, that really sees his potential goes further than just playing corner. Because I do think he can be an elite safety early on.”

Going back to Clemson’s interest in Johnson, it’s certainly mutual.

According to Williams, Johnson likes Clemson a lot. He went up to The Valley during the season and made a game-day visit. He’s planning on making a return trip to Clemson in the spring.

“He likes the school a lot, I will say that,” Williams said.

Since early December 2021, Johnson has picked up offers from USF, Oklahoma, Houston, Florida State, Miami, Penn State, Southern Cal, Michigan, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Utah, Pitt, Temple, Michigan State, Rutgers, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee and Ohio State.

It’s only a matter of time before Clemson throws its hat in the ring.
