Colts sign K Chase McLaughlin from practice squad

Chase McLaughlin was signed from the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed kicker Chase McLaughlin from the practice squad to the active roster and waived wide receiver Dezmon Patmon, the team announced Tuesday.

McLaughlin has been on the practice squad for the last three games and has been elevated every week since then. Because players only get three standard elevations, the Colts had to sign him to the active roster.

In the two games where McLaughlin actually has attempts—his first game was the Week 2 shutout—he has converted both of his extra-point attempts and has gone one-of-two on field-goal attempts.

Patmon has been a healthy scratch during three games and was only active when Michael Pittman Jr. missed the game in Week 2.

What the Colts said after preseason loss to Lions

Here’s what the Colts said after the preseason loss to the Lions.

The Indianapolis Colts lost 27-26 against the Detroit Lions in a preseason matchup Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium, and there were plenty of takeaways as both teams prepare for the 2022 season.

With the majority of the starting lineup sitting following two joint practices earlier in the week, we got a good look at the depth on the roster. Some of it was encouraging. Some of it not so much.

Here’s what the Colts had to say following the 27-26 loss at Lucas Oil Stadium:

Did Mike Strachan, Dezmon Patmon solidify roster spots?

Dezmon Patmon and Mike Strachan made a compelling case for their roster spots.

One of the positions of need for the Indianapolis Colts this offseason was wide receiver.

Drafting Alec Pierce in the second round and getting Parris Campbell back to pair with Michael Pittman Jr. should be enough to build a young, solid receiving core in Indy.

However, there is a lot of young talent in this training camp roster, making the decision on final cuts more difficult.

With multiple players fighting for a spot, and only about six slots available, it will be a battle until the very end to see which players will suit up against Houston in Week 1.

Based on Saturday’s preseason game against Detroit, though, it looks like the decision may have been made for those in charge.

Two names that stood out from Saturday’s game were Mike Strachan and Dezmon Patmon. Both players had somewhat unproductive campaigns last season, appearing in only a handful of games. This year, their impact could be much greater with a more pass-friendly offense.

Strachan came back to the practice field this week after having offseason knee surgery. The 25-year-old receiver did not miss a beat, though, picking right up where he left off last preseason.

He finished the day with three catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. His 6-foot-5 frame would be a huge asset to this Colts receiving corps, and that was on full display Saturday against the Lions. It seems that the Colts have big plans for Strachan if he can stay healthy and consistently perform while on the field.

Patmon has had some flashes throughout training camp and the preseason. But an explosive game is what he needed.

Against Detroit, Patmon led all Colts receivers with five catches for 103 yards and a touchdown,  including a 50-yard bomb from Sam Ehlinger. Patmon is another player that has not consistently put up numbers in this offense over the last two seasons. The talent is there, but will he get the opportunity to go out and showcase it?

At this point, it looks like Strachan and Patmon will round out the wide receiver room, with Ashton Dulin as the fourth player behind the big three.

Dulin is utilized more on special teams, so his reps at receiver have been limited. But his role as the fourth wide receiver is essentially locked in.

However, this does leave some guys out of the wide receiver room. Keke Coutee is a player the Colts were excited to work with this offseason, but a groin injury has sidelined him this week, leaving his status for the remainder of training camp up in the air.

It is likely he will be cut, along with undrafted rookie Ethan Fernea and recent addition D.J. Montgomery. The speedy DeMichael Harris will likely stay on the practice squad, with a history of being used on special teams periodically.

The Colts did not feel the need to bring in a veteran receiver this offseason, and we may be starting to see why. This young receiving corps is filled with the talent, size, and speed capable of going against some of the league’s best secondaries.

Expect this offense to throw the ball a lot more this year as Matt Ryan becomes more comfortable with his new teammates.

It seems as though the mystery of “Who will make the 53-man roster?” has been solved, with Mike Strachan and Dez Patmon making their cases to stick around and contribute.

Studs and duds from Colts’ preseason loss to Lions

Here are the studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason loss to the Lions.

The Indianapolis Colts couldn’t hold on to a lead Saturday when they hosted the Detroit Lions at Lucas Oil Stadium for a preseason game, losing 27-26.

Without the majority of starters on the field, we got a good look at the depth and position battles deeper on the roster. The starters are expected to play more during the final preseason game of the year against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Here are the studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason loss to the Lions:

WATCH: Dezmon Patmon catches 50-yard TD vs. Lions

Dezmon Patmon is having himself a game.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Dezmon Patmon has had a relatively quiet training camp and preseason, but he made his mark during Saturday’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

With the majority of the starters sitting, Patmon has made the most of his reps, which included a 50-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

It’s been a big day for Patmon, who had five receptions on six targets for 103 yards and a touchdown with that reception.

Under the radar players to watch at Colts training camp

These Colts are flying under the radar entering camp.

Can you feel it? No, not the heat wave that is going on across the country. It’s the NFL season that is less than 50 days away and teams are gearing up to get training camp underway. The Indianapolis Colts are set to open up their training camp on July 27.

Head coach Frank Reich is entering his fifth season with the organization and will be looking to set up his team for a successful 2022 campaign. That all starts in the dog days of the summer as players will be competing for a spot on the 53-man roster and of course, for playing time on the field.

If the Colts are going to go on a playoff run this year, they will need role players to step up and be more significant contributors.

Here are some under-the-radar players that will be looking to impress at training camp over the next month:

Colts’ Dezmon Patmon making his case for a bigger role

Dezmon Patmon is coming for the WR4 spot.

While the storylines of spring practices should all be taken with a grain of salt, it’s always encouraging to see a player like Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Dezmon Patmon flash as he has throughout the offseason workouts.

As the Colts work their way through figuring out the depth in the wide receiver corps, the third-year receiving in Patmon has been making his case this spring.

The former sixth-round pick has been seeing more time with the first-team offense, and has been taking advantage of those reps by making some big plays.

“The time is now,” Patmon told reporters via IndyStar. “It’s going to be a battle this year for all those spots.”

Patmon is one of the wide receivers in the room that brings an impressive blend of size and speed. Coming into the league at 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Patmon ran a 4.48 in the 40-yard dash with a 36-inch vertical jump.

Now, that he has a full offseason to work with the team and go through drills—something he hasn’t truly done since being drafted due to the pandemic—Patmon is grabbing this opportunity and running with it.

Being one of the bigger receivers in the room, of course Patmon is going to look at the Matt Ryan-Julio Jones connection as inspiration.

“I grew up wanting to be Julio (Jones), A.J. Green or Calvin Johnson,” Patmon said. “You idolize those bigger-body receivers because you can envision yourself becoming what they are. I definitely grew up watching Julio, and Matt was throwing him the ball.”

While Mike Strachan has missed valuable time due to an undisclosed injury this spring, Patmon has been making his case for the No. 4 role in the wide receiver room behind Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce and Parris Campbell.

Offensive coordinator Marcus Brady sees a player who is working more naturally rather than thinking too much during a play.

“He’s just developing, getting all the reps down, more so than last year,” Brady said. “What’s helping him is mentally understanding the offense, where he’s not thinking and he can just go out there and use his physical tools.”

The WR4 spot should be an intriguing competition when training camp rolls around, and Patmon is making his case for that spot this spring.

6 recent Colts’ draft picks with opportunity to play more in 2022

These recent draft picks have chances for bigger roles in 2022.

The Indianapolis Colts are right in the middle of the offseason training program with the hope that some of their young players will continue their development in bigger roles on both sides of the roster.

As we know when it comes to the Colts, they love to build through the draft and develop those picks. Entering 2022, there are plenty of roles up for grabs for some of those recent draft classes. By recent draft picks, we mean the 2020 and 2021 classes.

We won’t be including obvious names like Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr. and Kwity Paye—players with entrenched roles at their respective positions.

Here’s a look at six recent Colts’ draft picks with the opportunity to play more in 2022:

7 Colts whose jobs are in jeopardy in 2022

These Colts’ jobs are in jeopardy going into 2022.

It’s no doubt that the Indianapolis Colts and general manager Chris Ballard filled many areas of weakness during free agency and the 2022 NFL draft.

Addressing the wide receiver, tight end and tackle positions were huge for the team to take the next step in a very crowded AFC. With the new arrivals, however, it puts many players on the hot seat and could result in some even losing their jobs by the time the team travels to Houston for the season opener in September.

Every team needs depth, and the Colts are still adding key pieces that will help them in case of an injury. However, the NFL is a business, and the 53 players on the roster will be the ones making a difference on Sundays.

Here’s a list of players most in jeopardy of losing their spots this offseason:

Colts’ Carson Wentz working out with Michael Pittman Jr.

Despite trade rumors swirling, Colts QB Carson Wentz is getting some work in with his WRs.

Though much of the talk surrounding the Indianapolis Colts this offseason has been the future of quarterback Carson Wentz, it’s not stopping him from getting his work in.

The Colts won’t begin offseason workouts as a team until the middle of April, and it still isn’t clear if Wentz will be the quarterback when that time arrives. However, the 29-year-old posted pictures on Instagram getting some work in with Colts wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. and Dezmon Patmon.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CafyLPuPIkM/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=dfe677cc-4a3c-4771-b466-6c2fcd04e8bd

This was about the same time last offseason that Wentz got some work in with Pittman Jr. and a handful of Colts players following the big trade that sent him over from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wentz has probably heard or read about all of the rumors swirling around pertaining to his potential trade but continues to get work in regardless.

With so much noise pointing to Wentz likely being traded, it still isn’t completely guaranteed he’s gone this offseason. Though the chances seem likely, the Colts will have to make a decision before March 18, which is when the bonuses are triggered in Wentz’s contract.

We still have about two more weeks before that deadline arrives so the news should be heating up in the meantime.
