Cowboys News: 2020 breakout candidates, Dak backups, Aldon Smith is huge

Also, small-school studs, draft day prospects via video chat, Jerry Jones tops another list, and should players be working out together?

To hear one NFL coach tell it, Dallas came a lot closer to losing wide receiver Amari Cooper than Cowboys fans probably want to hear. And to hear one NFL insider tell it, the league should come down like a hammer on its quarterback’s workouts with an ex-teammate on the comeback trail.

The club has released more footage from virtual interviews with a pair of draft prospects, the new defender has kept himself in shape after four years away, and the team owner tops another list. Plus a tech tweak for draft day, a deep dive into the defense, a backup plan at quarterback, a big day on a bum shoulder for the rushing king, and a shout-out to the small-school studs. All the Cowboys news that’s fit to link, coming right up…

Florio: Dez-Dak workouts violate stay-at-home orders, NFL should ‘do something’

Do the social media videos of Dez Bryant and Cowboys QB Dak Prescott working out send a dangerous message? Should the league step in?

Some people just love to stir the pot. But when the pot in question is silver and blue and belongs to the Dallas Cowboys, it seems as though there are never enough stir sticks to go around.

Those workout videos that wide receiver Dez Bryant has been posting as he attempts to launch an NFL comeback bid have been a fun story to follow. Watching him ramp up his efforts to coax a contract out of his former employers in Dallas has been tantalizing for Cowboys fans, many of whom are eager to see the free agent throw up the X once again with a star on his helmet. His most recent sessions- ones that include current Cowboys Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott among his workout buddies- have raised the bar even further.

And also raised the ire of one Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.

Florio penned a piece on the website this week in which he lambastes Bryant and Prescott, who he says”continue to disregard important restrictions to out-of-home activities as communities throughout the world try to limit the potential spread of the coronavirus.”

The NFL insider claims the two “continue to flaunt their defiance of rules that have caused millions to change their habits dramatically.”

Florio then spoke by phone with Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan to elaborate, and he went so far as to call on the league to step in and take preventative or even disciplinary action.

“As of March 31, for the entire state of Texas, the executive order from the the governor was that people ‘shall avoid’- ‘shall avoid’- not may, not should, not we would like you to, but ‘shall,’ which is mandatory. You must do this. ‘Avoid eating or drinking at bars, restaurants, or food courts, or visiting gyms.’ And this happened at the A+D1 Training Facility in Dallas County, Texas. And Dallas County has taken it a step farther. The Dallas County order is that… ‘All public or private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit are prohibited.’

“So this isn’t about what they were doing while they were there and, ‘Are they within six feet of each other?’ Look, setting aside the fact that they’re passing around a football, and if any of them have the virus on their fingers, and we’re all supposed to assume we have the virus, well, they’re putting it on the football and they’re passing it to somebody else who’s getting the virus off the football and then they’re going to have it. Apart from all that, they’re defying state and local orders that prevent them from going to this facility and that require them to be at home.

“And to make matters worse, they aren’t just brazenly violating these orders. They are flaunting it, stupidly, by putting the evidence of it on social media.”

“It’s astounding to me that the NFL has nothing to say about it,” Florio continued. “This is reckless, dangerous behavior. It sends a horrible message to anyone out there who looks up to Dak Prescott and Dez Bryant, idolizes them, and maybe emulates them.”

In these unprecedented times, everyone is trying to figure out and adapt to rules and guidelines that are changing daily life on a daily basis. There’s little going on in the world that’s normal; in the sports world, it’s been an especially slow news day for over a month now. It’s perhaps easier than ever for somebody with a platform to sit back and monitor social media with an eye toward blasting someone else for behaving (or not behaving) in a certain way that adheres to a particular worldview.

It’s fingerpointing and whistleblowing and whataboutism run amok. And now it’s a legitimate story.

Because the thing is, technically speaking, Florio makes a valid point. Cowboys fans- whether or not they feel Bryant is worthy of a roster spot- probably should be at least mildly concerned about their franchise quarterback seemingly putting himself at a higher risk of catching the virus.

If he wasn’t worried before, owner Jerry Jones honestly should be mindful of the optics at work here. The face of the franchise is out there doing something that the rest of us aren’t supposed to be doing… and he’s jeopardizing his own health (and the team’s sizable investment) in the process.

Granted, it’s a workout. A game of catch. It’s not DUI. It’s not a weapons charge. It’s not a security video of a bar brawl or a 911 call detailing something darker. But these days when going to the grocery store to buy toilet paper isn’t even a simple endeavor anymore, it’s putting the organization in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Is this a news story if the players involved are Cincinnati Bengals or Jacksonville Jaguars? Truthfully, probably not.

But the rules are different for America’s Team. Always have been. And the simple fact is, when it’s the Dallas Football Cowboys, the spotlight is just a little brighter, the microscope is just a tad bigger.

Commissioner Roger Goodell has made an example of the Cowboys to the rest of the league before. It’s not hard to believe that some form of communication has already been drafted and sent to teams about minding the rules in the COVID-19 era.

“If you’ve got players who are violating the local laws that say ‘thou shall stay home during this pandemic,’ Florio told hosts Shan and RJ, “and they are both creating a real risk of spreading the virus, and sending a horrible message to others who may be influenced to do the same thing, I would like to see the NFL do something. Even if you’re not going to suspend anyone or fine anyone under the personal conduct policy. I want the commissioner to post a video, to issue a statement, telling all players who are in the NFL or hope to be back like Dez Bryant, that they must comply with all applicable state and local requirements as what they should and shouldn’t be doing during this pandemic.”

For his part, Bryant has already heard the buzz over his workout routines. It sounds as though his comeback campaign will continue, even if it means running shelter-in-place route trees from now on.

Cowboys News: Road opener against Rams anticipated, PI challenges on way out

As two Cowboys are honored for their outstanding play over years, the NFL’s All-Decade team was announced amid changes to the draft process.

There are only 16 days until the 2020 NFL draft is upon the world and it will be remarkably different than any draft before it. Coaches and executives are tasked with finding new methods of communication during one of the biggest weekends of the NFL season. How will trades be made without 20-line phones at GMs disposal? How will player value be debated when one has to use a Zoom conference to discuss things with their coaches and scouts? The time between picks still hasn’t been altered, yet.

Meanwhile, two Cowboys lineman made the 2010’s All-Decade team. While Zack Martin and Tyron Smith were easy selections to the team, should Travis Frederick have joined his comrades on the team?

All that and much more in our Cowboys News and Notes.

Dak Prescott and Dez Bryant are together and working out

Dak Prescott has found an old receiving partner to work out with, former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant.

Dak Prescott has found a familiar receiver while working out in the offseason and through the coronavirus pandemic. The Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback has been throwing passes to … Dez Bryant.

Prescott has been trying to work out the details of a long-term contract with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Bryant, meanwhile, is looking to get back into the league. He was cut by the Cowboys April 13, 2018 after 531 receptions for almost 7,500 yards with Dallas.

He signed with the New Orleans Saints in November of 2018 but tore his Achilles two days later. Bryant has been rehabbing it since.

In February of 2020, Jones said he had been mulling bringing Jones back into the Dallas Cowboys family. “I haven’t talked to Dez,” Jones said, per The Athletic. “But I have been thinking about it a lot in the shower. I’m thinking about it.”

Cowboys News: Aldon Smith so, so cheap, NFL wants mini-war

Cowboys News, April 2, 2020. Aldon Smith’s journey back to the NFL and the Cowboys. Dez Bryant works out with Dak Prescott. Draft strategies

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has taken plenty of chances on NFL stars with troubled pasts. In 2015, Jones took a chance on troubled defensive end Greg Hardy. In 2008, the Cowboys signed frequently suspended cornerback, Adam “Pacman” Jones. Jones has also taken gambles on players who were considered “distractions” to their previous teams. Dallas acquired wide receiver Terrell Owens after it went south in Philadelphia in 2006. The list can go on and on but one thing is for sure, is that Jerry Jones believes in second chances. Some pay off, and some do not.

The signing of free agent defensive end Aldon Smith is just another example of this. Take a look at what the work load for running back Ezekiel Elliot might look like under first year head coach Mike McCarthy. After the NFL discussed plenty of ways to produce this year’s NFL draft, a memo was sent to all 32 teams. Dez Bryant breaks twitter once again by telling the world he worked out with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. More draft strategies surface as the draft is less than three weeks away. All this, and so much more in today’s news.

Dez Bryant works with Prescott, fueling fans eager for a reunion

Free agent wide receiver Dez Bryant worked out with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. The Cowboys are still in the market for a wide out

Free agent wide receiver, and former member of the Dallas Cowboys, Dez Bryant has once again raised plenty of eyebrows with just one sentence on Twitter.

Bryant has been working diligently, trying to mount a comeback bid after being out of the league for the last two seasons. On Thursday, he teased a fan base that includes several followers eager to see him back in a Dallas uniform that he worked out with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

This isn’t the first public appearance for Bryant in hopes to catch the eye of the Dallas front office. On February 20, Bryant worked out with his wide receiver coach and sat down with Cowboys reporter Jane Slater for an exclusive interview. In that interview, Bryant expressed that he would love to play for this year’s Dallas Cowboys team because of the increase of talent on the offensive side of the ball.

Just one day later, Bryant was back on the practice field catching passes from Super Bowl MVP, Patrick Mahomes. There is no questioning Bryant’s work ethic along with his desire to be back in the league as he constantly tweeted about his workouts day after day.

Bryant was released by the Cowboys in April of 2018 after playing with them for eight seasons. Bryant was able to play with Prescott in 2016 and 2017 where he compiled over 1,600 yards, along with 14 touchdowns on 119 receptions. Bryant was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2016 while Prescott was his quarterback. He is currently the Cowboys all-time leading receiver in touchdown catches with 73.

It’s no surprise that as NFL free agency moves forward that Bryant is once again trying to make headlines. This tweet also comes a day after Jerry Jones took a chance by signing free agent defensive end, Aldon Smith.

The current Cowboys wide receiver group consists of newly re-signed, Amari Cooper, and Michael Gallup who is entering his sophomore season. Dallas let Randal Cobb walk as a free agent as he was then picked up by the Houston Texans. Tavon Austin still remains without a new contract as well and not much has been said about his status. After that, it remains a bit of a question mark. Cedric Wilson and Devin Smith are on the roster as well, but it seems the Cowboys are in the market for an additional wide receiver. With just one tweet and workout, Dez Bryant reenters the minds of the Dallas Cowboys front office.

19 times the Dallas Cowboys took risks on troubled players

The Dallas Cowboys signed Aldon Smith on April 1, another chapter in the book of risky signings by the franchise.

There the word trouble and you can spell it with a capital T when it comes to Texas and the Dallas Cowboys. America’s team has been a magnet for players with questionable resumes. Signing Aldon Smith is the latest risk Jerry Jones is taking in hopes of a huge reward.

Josh Brent

Tom Pennington/Getty Images

On Dec. 8, 2012, Josh Brent flipped his car on the Texas State Highway 114 at 2:21 a.m. while driving under the influence, killing his passenger, college and Cowboys teammate Jerry Brown. Brent announced his retirement on July 18, 2013, to focus on his off-the-field issues pertaining to the charges of intoxicated manslaughter. After serving his punishment in prison and going through a rehabilitation process, he was reinstated by the NFL following a 10-game suspension. On Nov. 11, 2014, he was activated from the team’s reserve/suspended list. His troubles with the law have continued long after his NFL career.

17 best Cowboys games to re-watch for free while under quarantine

The NFL has made its archival video service free through May; here’s a season’s worth of Dallas games worth revisiting to pass the time.

It’s football withdrawal season. Sure, there’s the free agency frenzy to keep track of, there are mock drafts to dissect, there are contract clauses and salary caps to crunch. But for the fan who just wants to park it on the sofa for an afternoon and take in an honest-to-goodness game, with running and throwing and tackling and after-further-reviewing and all, the pickings are pretty slim this time every year.

In 2020, though, that drought is compounded heavily by COVID-19. Whether on genuine lockdown, practicing some common-sense self-quarantining, or doing a little basement social distancing from the rest of your family and their never-ending Disney+ marathon, the phrase, “Are you ready for some football?” may elicit a slightly more visceral reaction these days.

The NFL has thrown fans a lifeline by making their Game Pass service free through May 31.

And while one can satisfy their pigskin craving with tons of original programming like A Football Life, Hard Knocks, and Mic’d Up, nothing restores a sense of normalcy (at least temporarily) like making some snacks, putting on a jersey, and cueing up a regular season game.

The archives go back to 2009, offering over a decade’s worth of football on various viewing platforms. Games are available in several different flavors: full broadcast (best for enjoying Tony Romo’s crystal-ball commentary, Troy Aikman’s no-nonsense stylings, or Booger McFarland’s head-shaking buffoonery), condensed versions (when you need a quick fix just to pass the time during Frozen 2), and even from the All-22 “coaches’ angle” (for maximum nerding out over the Xs and Os).

Cowboys fans, here’s a collection of games worth going back and re-watching, a full 17-game schedule (because there are no bye weeks in quarantine) to keep you cheering (mostly) while you’re under couch arrest.

2009 (finished 11-5, 1st in NFC East)

Week 15: Cowboys 24, Saints 17

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

It was the team’s first season in what is now called AT&T Stadium, but for this ’twas-the-week-before-Christmas tilt, the 8-5 Cowboys traveled to the Superdome to battle the undefeated Saints in primetime.

Dallas jumped out to a 17-3 halftime lead on a touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Miles Austin and a scoring run by Marion Barber. Barber would score again in the second half, but the hero of the night was DeMarcus Ware, who caused a pair of Drew Brees fumbles, one of which ended a late potentially-game-tying drive by New Orleans.

Wild Card Weekend: Cowboys 34, Eagles 14

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas had swept the regular-season series with Philadelphia by a combined score of 44-16. After a scoreless first quarter, the Cowboys blew things open with 27 points in the second and never looked back. Tashard Choice, Miles Austin, Felix Jones, and John Phillips all found the end zone in what was the Cowboys’ first playoff victory since 1996 and coach Wade Phillips’s first-ever postseason win.

Referee Ed Hochuli got loads of airtime in this one, as the two clubs set a league record for the most penalty yards (228) in a playoff game. Sloppy? Yes. But a win over the Eagles is a win over the Eagles. And a win over the Eagles in the playoffs is even sweeter.[lawrence-newsletter]
