2023 NFL Draft: Top 50 prospects 1.0 (pre-combine version)

With the scouting combine just around the corner, Doug Farrar put together the first edition of his top 50 players in the 2023 NFL draft class.

There’s a lot that goes into a Big Board, and where you are in the evaluation process matters a lot. NFL teams have area scouts and scouting directors reporting to general managers; they’ve done the work on prospects all year long. If you’re writing about the NFL in-season, and sneaking away to watch as much college tape as possible, you’re scrambling a bit after the Super Bowl and before the scouting combine just to catch up.

So, full disclosure: This first Big Board of mine for the 2023 draft process reflects the 100-plus players I’ve watched to a point where I can reasonably assess what I think their NFL potential might be. Before the combine, I’ll watch a bunch more tape, and hopefully become more refined in the overall.

Once that happens, we’ll be building all kinds of position lists, single-subject evaluations, and mock drafts reflecting the widening of that study.

A few near-misses who may make the next Big Board based on combine and Pro Day performances, as well as further tape analysis:

Oregon LB Noah Sewell
Utah CB Clark Phillips III
Notre Dame EDGE Isaiah Foskey
Michigan DT Mazi Smith
Clemson TE Davis Allen
TCU OG Steve Avila
Alabama DB Eli Ricks
Houston WR Nathaniel “Tank” Dell
UCLA EDGE Laiatu Latu

With all that in mind, here’s Touchdown Wire’s introductory Top 50 draft prospects for 2023.

Watch: Devon Witherspoon vs. any other CB in the 2023 NFL draft

Watch: Touchdown Wire’s breakdown of Devon Witherspoon vs. any other CB in the 2023 NFL draft

Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon has emerged as one of the top potential 2023 NFL draft targets for the Detroit Lions. Witherspoon is one of the most-projected players to the Lions with the No. 6 overall pick.

It’s easy to see why. Witherspoon plays a physical, aggressive, press-man style that Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn favors. His tackling and “this dial goes to 11” attitude seem to mesh well with the type of squad head coach Dan Campbell wants.

Our colleagues at Touchdown Wire, Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling, broke down Witherspoon’s game and traits. They also debated whether Witherspoon is worthy of being considered the best cornerback in the draft class.

Watch and enjoy:

VIDEO — 2023 NFL Draft either/or: Devon Witherspoon or any other cornerback?

Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling were given the choice of Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon, or any other CB draft prospect. The decision was easy for both of them.

Now that the scouting combine is right around the corner, it’s time for Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling to put on their imaginary general manager hats and make some personnel decisions with draft prospects. It’s Either/Or time! In this case, we’re giving Doug and Luke an interesting choice: You can have Illinois cornerback Devin Witherspoon, or every other cornerback in this draft class. Turns out, the decision was pretty easy.

Doug: This seems like a tough one, but it isn’t for me. In the first Top 50 of the 2023 draft season I released last week, I had Witherspoon at CB1 and the fifth-best prospect in this class. I then had Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez at ninth overall, Penn State’s Joey Porter Jr. at 11, South Carolina’s Cam Smith at 23, Alabama’s Brian Branch at 24, Mississippi State’s Emmanuel Forbes at 27, and on and on. There are cornerbacks I need to watch more who could vault up that board by the time 2.0 comes out after the combine, like Maryland’s Deonte Banks, who I have right below the first round at 35th overall.

But here’s one thing I don’t think will change for me between now and the draft: Witherspoon is the best cornerback in this class, and his combination of size, speed, short-area quickness, and smart aggression set him apart. Most taller, lankier cornerbacks don’t have Witherspoon’s ability to adjust to routes in short spaces, and most smaller cornerbacks can’t just erase a receiver like Witherspoon can. In the 2022 season, per Pro Football Focus, he allowed 22 receptions on 63 targets for 206 yards, 71 yards after the catch, no touchdowns, three interceptions, 14 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 25.0. Which means that a quarterback facing Witherspoon was much better off chucking the ball out of the stadium than targeting him.

It’s a loaded cornerback class with all kinds of skills on display, but yes, I’d take Witherspoon over the field. Without a second thought. He’s my guy if I’m a general manager, because I can build my whole secondary around talent like that.

Luke: When I first dove into Witherspoon’s tape, I really didn’t expect to like him that much more than every other corner in this class, but I did. There just aren’t any flaws, man. He’s big enough, fast enough, twitchy enough, smart enough. He’s got the technique, the instincts, the timing, the toughness. He does everything at such a high level, you’re almost waiting for the catch at some point, but it never comes. My most recent big board had Witherspoon at No. 4 overall, trailing only Will Anderson, Jalen Carter, and Bijan Robinson. I LOVE the top of this corner class, too…I just think Witherspoon is still just that good, though.

Todd McShay gives the Commanders some defensive help in his new mock draft

With the top three offensive linemen off the board, McShay gives the Commanders defensive help.

It’s officially draft season. The Super Bowl is over, and Todd McShay is releasing a new mock draft.

McShay kicked things off with a big trade in his new mock draft. At No. 1 overall, McShay has the Chicago Bears trading out of the top spot with the Indianapolis Colts. As expected, the Colts go quarterback at No. 1, taking Bryce Young of Alabama.

C.J. Stroud of Ohio State lands at No. 2 to the Houston Texans, with Alabama edge defender Will Anderson No. 3 to the Cardinals and the Bears get Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter fourth overall. The Bears would likely pick Carter at No. 1 if they stick there.

What about the Washington Commanders?

McShay has the Commanders taking Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon at No. 16, the second cornerback picked behind Joey Porter Jr., who lands 14th overall to the Patriots.

A terrific cover corner, Witherspoon allowed just 3.3 yards per attempt thrown his direction this season, second-best in the nation, and he picked off three passes. Washington’s pass defense improved a bit in 2022, but it still needs a dominant playmaker on the outside, opposite Kendall Fuller. And Witherspoon’s ball skills would help create some takeaways after the Commanders finished 28th with nine interceptions.

Witherspoon would be an excellent addition. While there are other lengthier cornerbacks, Witherspoon is a gamer. He’s versatile and isn’t afraid to stick his nose in the run game.

As for the offensive linemen, the top three offensive linemen [Peter Skoronski, Paris Johnson and Broderick Jones] were already off the board.

This would leave the Commanders needing to address the offensive line in round two.

Giants trade up, select a cornerback in Chad Reuter mock draft

In the latest mock draft from NFL Network’s Chad Reuter, the New York Giants trade up with the Ravens in order to select a cornerback.

As the New York Giants enter their second offseason under general manager Joe Schoen, the arrow is pointing up. But there are still plenty of needs that must be addressed over the coming months.

The Giants need depth at nearly every position but some are more glaring than others. The biggest gaps on their roster can be found at wide receiver, guard, center, inside linebacker, and cornerback.

In the latest mock draft from NFL Network’s Chad Reuter, the Giants address one of those needs in Round 1. However, it may not be the one you expect. And how they go about it may also come as a surprise.

Reuter projects that the Giants will trade up with the Baltimore Ravens and settle on Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon.

Pick 22: Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois

If the Giants find a receiver in free agency, I could see them jumping ahead of the Vikings to grab a corner like “Spoon” to fortify the secondary. He’s as competitive as they come, harassing receivers all day long, drawing flags and breaking up passes. New York trades the 25th overall selection and a third-rounder to Baltimore to move up three spots. (The Giants get a sixth-round pick, as well.)

In Round 2, Reuter has the Giants finally adding a wide receiver with Cincinnati’s Tyler Scott. Then, in Round 3, he has them landing Wisconsin center Joe Tippmann, which is a great value at No. 89 overall.

Reuter’s outlook is certainly a bit different than many other early mock drafts, but the Giants ultimately address three areas of need over their first three picks.

2023 NFL Mock Draft: Vikings Mock Draft Roundup 6.0

The latest Vikings mock draft roundup has a few interesting selections

Mock draft season is upon us and that means our mock draft roundup is back!

What we do every week is track the mainstream outlets mock drafts and aggregate how many times a player gets selected. Last season, we tallied up 173 mock drafts and only 10 of them were on offense. This season could end up being much of the same.

We will track them and try to determine trends and patterns, along with giving my own analysis on how they could fit with the Minnesota Vikings.

Mock Draft Roundup 5.0

2023 NFL Mock Draft: Matt Anderson’s mock draft 2.0

The 2022 NFL season is officially over and @MattAnderson_8 has the first mock draft after final snap

The Super Bowl has just concluded, which means that the NFL offseason is now in full swing for all 32 teams. We are finally going to get some sort of feel for the direction teams are going, which will directly influence how they approach the NFL draft.

Mock drafts are what make the NFL offseason not so mundane. In my latest mock draft, I’ll aim to give it my best shot as to where teams might go come April’s NFL Draft.

Pro Football Network has Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon as the latest corner mocked to the Vikings

On Thursday in their latest mock draft, Pro Football Network had the Minnesota Vikings selecting a cornerback in the first round.

The Minnesota Vikings’ cornerback room desperately needs more bodies, which is why many mock drafts have suggested the Vikings take a corner in the first round.

On Thursday, Dalton Miller of the Pro Football Network joined the club in his latest NFL mock draft by having the Vikings select Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon.

Another year, another cornerback being drafted in Round 1 by the Minnesota Vikings. It’s a tale as old as time because, unfortunately, as of late, it’s blown up in the Vikings’ faces.

Minnesota has young cornerbacks on the roster, but none of them have shown they’re ready to become consistent contributors. And they’re the only three left on the roster before free agency hits.

Devon Witherspoon brings the high-end coverage tools necessary to survive in a league that has disallowed physicality in coverage. However, Witherspoon brings more than enough physicality against the run. The defensive back had a ridiculous eight tackles for loss in 2021.”

We haven’t seen Witherspoon mocked to the Vikings a whole lot, but he’d definitely help fill an immediate need. He’s an explosive corner with very fluid hips and can be an asset in the run game, which is perfect for Flores’ defense.

The Vikings will more than likely draft a corner at some point in the draft. The question is, with a loaded cornerback group, do you take one on in Round One?

2023 NFL Draft: Tyler Forness’ top 12 cornerbacks

The 2023 NFL Draft is fast approaching and the cornerback class is loaded. @TheRealForno has his top 12 cornerbacks in this class

The 2023 NFL draft is approaching and there is one thing that’s clear.

This cornerback class is insanely deep.

In my initial study, I have written up full scouting reports on 12 cornerbacks and they all received grades of at least 79.0. That is a high third-round grade and 10 of those 12 got second-round grades.

Here is how I have the class currently graded before the NFL combine and athletic testing.
