Vikings trade back, land CB in latest Pro Football Network mock draft

Witherspoon would be an excellent add for the Vikings

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah came to the NFL from the world of Wall Street and showed in his first calendar year running the team that he loves himself a trade.

Adofo-Mensah made multiple deals during the 2022 NFL draft, including setting the NFL world by storm by moving down with two division rivals. Pro Football Network’s Arif Hasan has him doing so one more time by trading down with the New York Giants. In turn, he has the Vikings selecting Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon.

Having missed out on the first tier of cornerbacks in the draft, the Vikings can trade back and still grab a first-round quality player while still accumulating the picks that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is known to love having. The Vikings just sunk second- and fourth-round picks in cornerbacks last year and have a younger player in Cameron Dantzler that they might want to continue to develop.

The problem is that those three players are the only ones they have under contract next year, and none of them are by any means reliable. Devon Witherspoon has the opportunity to break into the top-10 conversation if the draft circuit goes well for him. But for now, he’ll be in the second tier. The Vikings should like both his length and agility, two things not often paired together.”

Adding Witherspoon would be excellent for the Vikings but, as Hasan mentions, a great pre-draft process will likely shoot him up in the draft come April.

Mock draft watch: Breaking down CBS Sports’ latest Lions projections

Breaking down CBS Sports’ latest Lions projections in a wild mock draft that features trades involving the first 3 picks

The latest mock draft from CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson features a flurry of trade activity above the Lions selection at No. 6. It includes the Texans trading up from No. 2 to No. 1 and the Raiders moving up to No. 3 overall.

At the sixth spot, Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson gets the call in this projection. The 6-foot-6 defensive end with the long arms and powerful shoulders is only the 16th-ranked prospect on the CBS big board, but he’s a pretty easy sell to Detroit,

Wilson is a high-motor player who consistently finds his way into the backfield. He’s still raw but the physical tools are there and when he puts it all together he is going to be a problem.

A player who is often projected to go at No. 6 in many other current mock drafts falls to the Lions’ own pick at No. 18. Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon is the fourth cornerback off the board in this mock but remains a perfect fit for what Detroit wants at outside cornerback.

Interestingly, both Wilson and Witherspoon have withdrawn from competing in next week’s Senior Bowl. With little to prove to teams, it makes sense to avoid any potential injury risk in an exhibition game.

2023 NFL draft film room: Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon

See for yourself what makes Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon one of the top cornerback prospects in the 2023 NFL draft class

It’s officially NFL draft season, so it’s time to get to know the best players at every positions in the 2023 class.

What makes Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon one of this year’s top cornerback prospects?

Watch the tape and see for yourself:

Patriots get Mel Kiper’s top-ranked cornerback in recent mock draft

Mel Kiper has the Patriots adding a big-time playmaker to their defensive backfield.

The New England Patriots could use a serious upgrade at offensive tackle, but ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has them addressing the defensive backfield in his recent 2023 NFL mock draft.

With the No. 14 overall pick, Kiper has the Patriots selecting Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon.

It’s a solid pick if the Patriots prioritize fortifying their defensive backfield over the offensive line. Witherspoon made the First-Team All-Big Ten in the 2022 season after finishing with 41 tackles, three interceptions and 14 pass deflections.

The Patriots might need some help at cornerback if they lose Jonathan Jones in free agency. There are also concerns with Jack Jones, who already came with off-the-field concerns and was suspended near the end of the season after reportedly talking back to coach Bill Belichick.

When it comes to the Witherspoon draft selection, Kiper wrote:

“Witherspoon is my top-ranked corner, a long and physical player who shut down an entire side of the field for the Fighting Illini. He also is not afraid to stick his head in and make a tackle.

Outside of corner, New England could target offensive line or wide receiver with this pick to try to support quarterback Mac Jones, who struggled in Year 2.”

Adding another potential playmaker to a defensive unit that led the charge during the season would be a Belichick kind of move. As a cornerback, a feisty option who comes with incredibly athleticism and size like Witherspoon would only make things better.

Is Devon Witherspoon the best CB prospect in the 2023 NFL draft?

If you’re looking for a favorite cornerback prospect in the 2023 NFL draft class, Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon can make a strong case

Every year around this time, each position group in the NFL draft class starts to separate itself from the rest of the pack, in both good and bad ways.

One of the strongest groups in the 2023 class appears to be at cornerback, where multiple players could easily make a strong case to be the top prospect of the group.

One name that appears to be a popular one right now is Devon Witherspoon from Illinois, and Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar recently broke down why this particular shutdown artist might be the next superstar cover man at the next level:

Here’s just a little slice of Farrar’s breakdown:

Witherspoon’s movement skills — his ability to change direction quickly in short spaces to get and stay sticky with smaller, more angular receivers — are indeed unusual for a player of his height. Most longer, lankier cornerbacks can be bedeviled by receivers and routes that force them to dance step-to-step. Which makes sense — when your body has longer moving parts, it’s going to take an extra millisecond for everything to get going in the same direction.

Witherspoon will be one of the most highly anticipated attendees at the Senior Bowl next week, where he’ll have a chance to solidify himself as a potential top-10 pick.

2023 NFL Draft: Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon is set to be the NFL’s next great cornerback

Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon is set to be the best cornerback in the 2023 draft class. The tape tells the story.

Now that Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner broke out big in his rookie season for the New York Jets, and Tariq Woolen came out of nowhere to ball out in his rookie campaign for the Seattle Seahawks, the NFL — copycat league that it is — will be all over the next big, aggressive cornerback with speed and movement skills who can come in and make a professional defense better.

Fortunately for coaches and evaluators at this level, there are some interesting prospects in the 2023 draft class who might be able to match what Gardner and Woolen did in 2022. Penn State’s Joey Porter Jr., with an unofficial pre-combine 6-foot-2, 198-pound frame, has showed all those qualities, and he’s big and salty enough to make receivers think twice about their varied approaches. Georgia’s Kelee Ringo, despite a few lapses in coverage in 2022, will have NFL teams looking at his 6-foot-2, 220-pound frame, and thinking, well, there’s the kind of raw-clay prospect on whom we can take a chance.

But among all the draftable cornerbacks in this upcoming class, Illinois’ Devin Witherspoon might be the best of the bunch, and certainly the most intriguing. He fits the suit at 6-foot-0 and 180 pounds, and in the 2022 season, Witherspoon’s metrics were absolutely insane.

Now, what you do expect of any bigger cornerback is the ability to shut down any kind of boundary routes. On this interception against Northwestern in Week 11 from outside left, Witherspoon clamped down on receiver Calvin Johnson Jr. (no relation to Megatron), and came away with the ball.

But again, it’s Witherspoon’s short-area quickness that sets him apart among cornerbacks of his size. On this pass deflection against Michigan in Week 12, watch how Witherspoon matches receiver Ronnie Bell through his short ship route from the slot, and then closes in a hurry for the breakup.

Here’s a deflection against Purdue in Week 11 in which Witherspoon stays well in phase over the top of this slant-flat crosser. I have no idea what his arm length measurements will be at the combine, but based on multiple deflections where he’s reaching over to break up the ball, I’m suspecting he’ll top out at (or near the top of) his position.

And finally, if you want a cornerback who can read a screen or swing pass from outside, and then crash down with evil intentions… well ask Indiana running back Shaun Shivers how this play worked out for him.

Ouch.

We will next see Witherspoon at the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl, and he’s ready for that challenge.

“I’m looking forward to playing alongside every single player in attendance,” he said in late December, via Justin Melo of the Draft Network. “I’ve been paying attention to who’s accepted their invite and what not. It looks like we’re going to have a terrific group in attendance. All of those guys are great football players. They’re all here for a reason.

“I’m excited to compete against them. I’m honored to be here. I’m looking forward to balling out with them. I’m going to get their perspective on the game, too. I’m here to learn.”

As the tape clearly shows, he already knows a lot. Enough to be an instant star in the NFL.

The Commanders land a different defender in the newest Draft Wire mock draft

The Commanders land a physical corner with their first-round pick in this mock draft.

It’s no secret the Washington Commanders need offensive line help in the 2023 NFL draft. But at pick No. 16, what if some of the top offensive linemen are off the board for the Commanders?

Luke Easterling of Draft Wire has the Commanders landing a talented cornerback at No. 16 in Devon Witherspoon from Illinois.

Not familiar with Witherspoon? The 6-foot-0, 180-pounder didn’t begin playing football until his junior year of high school, which slowed his recruitment. After initially committing to Hutchinson Community College, Witherspoon landed at Illinois days before camp started in 2019.

As a true freshman in only his third year of organized football, Witherspoon played in every game, making three starts. From there, he would start the next three seasons and become an All-Big-Ten selection in his final two seasons before being named a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award in 2022.

Witherspoon may have the highest ceiling of any cornerback in this draft. He is a physical player who excels in man coverage. That skill set would certainly be welcome on Washington’s defense in 2023 and beyond.

Lions mock draft watch: Daniel Jeremiah’s 1st projections for Detroit

The former NFL scout offers up a pair of potential impact defenders for Detroit in the first round

The first mock draft for 2023 from NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah is now freed into the wild. The former NFL scout and popular television personality loads up the Lions with two premium defensive talents in the first round of his projections.

With the No. 6 overall pick, the one Detroit acquired from the Los Angeles Rams, Jeremiah’s initial projection for the Lions is Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon. The fit in Detroit is very easy to see, as Jeremiah notes,

He is dripping with instincts and possesses outstanding ball skills. His feisty play style would fit the culture Dan Campbell and Co. are building in Detroit.

The Lions found immediate success in 2022 with Witherspoon’s former roommate, safety Kerby Joseph. Given the Lions’ need for an outside CB who can play man coverage and make plays on the ball, Witherspoon is an easy sell even as high as No. 6 overall.

With Detroit’s own pick at No. 18, Jeremiah sticks with defense and installs Clemson LB Trenton Simpson in the middle of the Lions defense. Simpson is at his best in the passing game, both in coverage and as a blitzer between the tackles. He would presumably replace Alex Anzalone in that role in Detroit.

What do you think about this one, Lions fans?

2023 NFL mock draft: Four top-10 QBs, Cowboys go CB, DL

A full two-round mock draft (no trades) that identifies team needs and good fits; the Cowboys continue to restock their defense. | From @TimLettiero

The Dallas Cowboys will be in an interesting spot this offseason as they have numerous key contributors on expiring contracts. This includes names such as RB Tony Pollard, TE Dalton Schultz, LB Leighton Vander Esch and S Donovan Wilson, among others. While in an ideal world they all return, this isn’t a realistic possibility and some holes will need to be plugged by those who come at a cheaper price tag.

Then comes April where Will McClay and the Cowboys’ front offense put their drafting prowess to work, finding potential Pro Bowl and All-Pro caliber players over the course of draft weekend. Dallas’ back-to-back playoff appearances speak to an open championship window, but the annual lack of free-agency means the draft is the way they’ll continue to fight for relevancy. This doesn’t happen in a vacuum, so here’s a full two-round 2023 mock draft to see what kind of talent will be there.

Latest 2023 NFL mock draft from Draft Wire send Vikings CB Devon Witherspoon

The Illinois cornerback is a tremendous prospect

Mock drafts are fun and they continue to send the Minnesota Vikings some interesting players. The latest from Luke Easterling and Draft Wire has the Vikings going cornerback and this time it’s Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon.

While he likely will be drafted earlier with all the buzz throughout the industry, Witherspoon is a great player that is currently my CB3. Here is what Easterling had to say about the Fighting Illini corner.

“Another receiver to pair with Justin Jefferson shouldn’t be out of the question, but this defense needs help in the worst way, particularly when it comes to stopping the pass. Witherspoon has been one of the most dominant cover men in the country this season.”

It really feels like it’s going to be a cornerback or wide receiver at the top of the NFL draft for the Vikings. Both are premium positions and fill a major need long-term for the Vikings.
