Steelers release key backup offensive tackle

The Steelers released Devery Hamilton.

On Sunday, news came out that backup offensive tackle Dylan Cook could miss several weeks with a foot injury. This is in addition to the knee injury suffered by rookie Troy Fautanu. With the start of the season in question for both guys, we assumed offensive tackle Devery Hamilton would be kept on the 53-man roster.

However, when the Steelers announced their first round of cuts, Hamilton made the list.

This leaves the Steelers woefully thin at offensive tackle to start the season. If Cook starts the year on IR and Fautanu isn’t healthy for Week One, Pittsburgh has no backup on the team.

What does this mean? Most likely, General Manager Omar Khan is going to hit up free agency once roster cuts are final for a castoff or two from another NFL team.

Pittsburgh’s offensive tackles have struggled in preseason and Fautanu can’t get healthy fast enough for this unit.

Giants claim LB Ray Wilborn off waivers from Broncos, waive OL Devery Hamilton

The New York Giants have claimed LB Ray Wilborn off waivers from the Denver Broncos and waived/injured OL Devery Hamilton.

After suffering a leg injury during joint practices with the Detroit Lions last week, the Giants have decided to waive offensive lineman Devery Hamilton.

Hamilton was waived with an injury designation and if he clears, he will revert to the team’s reserve/injured list. At that point, if both sides desire it, Hamilton can be released with an injury settlement.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants were awarded linebacker Ray Wilborn off waivers from the Denver Broncos.

Wilborn originally signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2020. He also spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the COVID-19-altered season.

In 2021, Wilborn joined the Green Bay Packers before being released as a part of final cuts in 2022. He then signed with the Broncos after a tryout and made his NFL debut last season.

Wilborn has appeared in two career games and taken all of his snaps (31) on special teams. He has not registered any common statistics.

Pro Football Focus gave Wilborn a 72.3 special teams grade in 2022.

Wilborn is the cousin of former Giants running back Reuben Droughns, who picked up a Super Bowl XLII ring with the team in 2007.

In addition to the Wilborn and Hamilton transactions, the Giants are also reportedly signing offensive lineman Julién Davenport.

Giants injury update: D.J. Davidson activated from PUP

The New York Giants have activated DT D.J. Davidson from PUP and offered updates on several other injured players, including Collin Johnson.

Prior to practice on Monday, New York Giants defensive lineman D.J. Davidson passed his physical and was activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Davidson joins a suddenly deep group of interior defensive linemen, including rookie Jordon Riley, who played well in his NFL preseason debut.

Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) and cornerback Aaron Robinson (knee) remain on PUP with no timetable for return, although general manager Joe Schoen previously implied that Robinson could be activated this week.

The news on wide receiver Collin Johnson, who suffered a knee injury against the Detroit Lions, was also somewhat positive. His issue does not appear to be long-term.

“I don’t think it’s long-term, but I’m not a doctor, either,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

Johnson will not practice on Monday but right tackle Evan Neal (concussion) will take a step forward. He will participate in the non-contact portion of practice as he works his way back. However, Neal remains in concussion protocol.

Meanwhile, offensive linemen Devery Hamilton (leg) and Tyre Phillips (unknown), running back Gary Brightwell (ankle), linebacker Cam Crown (unknown), defensive lineman Ryder Anderson (triceps), and defensive back Nick McCloud (stomach) will not practice.

Finally, cornerback Cor’Dale Flott (abdominal) will practice after leaving Friday night’s preseason game against the Lions early. Nose tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches (groin) will also practice.

Giants’ Gary Brightwell, Devery Hamilton dealing with injuries

New York Giants RB Gary Brightwell and OL Devery Hamilton will miss some time due to newly sustained injuries.

The New York Giants entered their second day of joint practices against the Lions in Detroit with several roster ‘bubble’ players sitting out.

Gary Brightwell is, at the most, the Giants’ fourth-string running back behind Saquon Barkley, Matt Breida and Eric Gray but is the leading candidate to return kicks this season.

Devery Hamilton is vying for a roster spot at right tackle behind Evan Neal and Matt Peart.

Also taking a day off on Wednesday is veteran wide receiver Sterling Shepard (knee), who was scheduled to have a maintenance day.

Giants waive OL Devery Hamilton, DB Trenton Thompson

The New York Giants have waived OL Devery Hamilton and DB Trenton Thompson, with both expected to return on the practice squad.

Just days after signing them from the practice squad to the active roster, the New York Giants have waived offensive lineman Devery Hamilton and defensive back Trenton Thompson.

Both players have subsequently cleared waivers and are expected to sign back to the Giants’ practice squad.

Hamilton and Thompson were active for the Giants’ 28-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving, but their snaps were limited. Thompson took just 12 snaps on special teams and Hamilton just four. Neither player factored in.

With Hamilton and Thompson having been waived, the Giants now have two open spots on their 53-man roster. They are likely to be filled by linebacker Azeez Ojulari and offensive lineman Ben Bredeson, who are both now eligible to come off injured reserve (IR).

In order to sign Hamilton and Thompson back to the practice squad, two corresponding releases or contract terminations must take place.

The Giants will return to East Rutherford on Monday.

Giants sign two to 53-man roster in flurry of roster moves

The New York Giants made a series of rosters moves ahead of their Week 12 game, which included two signings, two releases and two elevations.

With a significant number of injuries entering a Thanksgiving Day game against the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants were forced to make a string of roster moves beforehand.

The team announced on Wednesday evening that they have signed offensive lineman Devery Hamilton and defensive back Trenton Thompson from the practice squad to the active roster.

Hamilton and Thompson help provide depth at two positions truly ravaged by injury. Four offensive line starters are out in Week 12 — four and a reserve if you include Ben Bredeson — and three members of the secondary, including safety Xavier McKinney. Two others (Dane Belton and Jason Pinnock) are questionable.

In order to clear space for Hamilton and Thompson on the 53-man roster, the Giants waived linebackers Austin Calitro and Quincy Roche.

The Giants also announced that defensive back Terrell Burgess and offensive lineman Korey Cunningham have been elevated from the practice squad, again adding depth at positions of need.

Linebacker/safety Landon Collins was once again passed over for elevation.

Giants sign Devery Hamilton from practice squad, release Austin Calitro

The New York Giants have signed OL Devery Hamilton from their practice squad to the 53-man roster and released LB Austin Calitro.

The New York Giants have signed offensive lineman Devery Hamilton to their active roster from their practice squad.

In order to make room for Hamilton, the Giants have released linebacker Austin Calitro.

The Giants are banged up along the offensive line and it is a short week, so this move makes sense.

Center Jon Feliciano, Tyre Phillips and rookie Joshua Ezuedu all are dealing with neck injuries and starting right tackle Evan Neal is still dealing with a knee issue.

Left tackle Andrew Thomas is also dealing with an illness.

Giants sign Vernon Butler, Devery Hamilton to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed veteran DT Vernon Butler to their practice squad, while several ex-Giants have new homes.

The New York Giants continued tweaking their roster on Tuesday, making several practice squad moves.

Offensive lineman Devery Hamilton had his contract officially terminated, but he will remain in East Rutherford. He is expected to sign back to the team’s practice squad on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Giants have also signed veteran defensive tackle Vernon Butler to their practice squad.

Butler, a first-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2016 NFL draft, provides additional depth along the interior defensive line. Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams have been taking the bulk of the snaps and head coach Brian Daboll would like to work them into more of a rotation to keep them healthy.

In addition to his time with the Panthers, Butler has also had stints with the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders. He’s appeared in 76 career games (19 starts) and recorded 106 tackles (15 for a loss), 21 QB hits, 8.0 sacks, four forced fumbles and three passes defensed.

Meanwhile, defensive back Justin Layne, who was waived earlier this week, has been claimed by the Chicago Bears.

Finally, former Giants wide receiver Alex Bachman, who led the NFL with 19 preseason receptions, has signed with the Houston Texans.

Giants activate CB Rodarius Williams, sign DL Henry Mondeaux off practice squad

The New York Giants have activated CB Rodarius Williams off of IR and signed DL Henry Mondeaux to the active roster in a series of moves.

The New York Giants made a series of roster moves on Monday, which included adding several defensive reinforcements.

Cornerback Rodarius Williams, the team’s 2021 sixth-round pick, was activated off of injured reserve. He suffered a torn ACL in Week 6 of last season and opened the current season on IR. He rejoins a thin group that consists of Adoree’ Jackson, Fabian Moreau, Cor’Dale Flott and Darnay Holmes.

In addition to activating Williams, the Giants also signed defensive lineman Henry Mondeaux off of their practice squad.

Mondeaux has appeared in three games this season, all as a practice squad elevation, recording five tackles (one for a loss). He will replace Nick Williams, who landed on IR last week with a biceps injury.

In order to clear two spots on the 53-man roster, the Giants released offensive tackle Devery Hamilton and defensive back Justin Layne. Hamilton became expendable due to the recent returns of Nick Gates and Matt Peart, and the pending return of Shane Lemieux.

Finally, the Giants also terminated the practice squad contract of offensive tackle Will Holden.
