Report: Cowboys LB Devante Bond suffered knee injury in earlier OTA, to miss ’22 season

The veteran linebacker was signed to a futures contract in January, but an injury suffered on May 25 will now cost him his 2022 season in Dallas. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys linebacking corps, already one of the thinner position groups on the roster, has suffered what appears to be a serious loss.

Devante Bond injured a knee at an earlier practice, as per a Thursday report from ESPN’s Todd Archer. He will now require surgery and will miss the entire 2022 season.

The injury may have occurred during May 25’s voluntary session at The Star; Bond left the field early that day with the Cowboys’ head athletic trainer, Jim Maurer.

Bond was originally a sixth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in 2016. He was released during the 2019 campaign and subsequently signed with Chicago. He stayed with the Bears until the conclusion of the 2021 season.

Dallas signed him to the practice squad in the final days of 2021; he signed a reserve/future contract with the club in January of this year.

The Cowboys have several notable names at linebacker for the upcoming season, but even more question marks.

Micah Parsons, of course, is coming off his Defensive Rookie of the Year effort last season. Behind him, Leighton Vander Esch enters a prove-it year in his fifth year as a pro. Jabril Cox showed promise last year, but was sidelined with an ACL tear; the team is hoping for big things from him moving forward. Damone Clark may turn out to be a fifth-round steal, but the rookie will need time to recover from offseason neck surgery. Devin Harper was selected in the sixth round of the draft.

The rest of the position group includes Luke Gifford, a contributor mostly on special teams now in his fourth season, plus new undrafted free agents Storey Jackson and Aaron Hansford.

This offseason, the team allowed Keanu Neal to leave in free agency after one season in Dallas; he has signed with Tampa Bay. Francis Bernard, a Cowboy for two years, is also currently a free agent.

Cowboys activate Malik Hooker, Trysten Hill off COVID list; sign new LB to practice squad

Wednesday also saw Tyron Smith at practice, Noah Brown’s 21-day return window open, and JaQuan Hardy and Brandon Smith return from COVID. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Wednesday saw multiple developments on the Cowboys roster, with several notable players being upgraded as the team prepares to host Arizona on Sunday afternoon. It’s a game the Cowboys need to win to maintain hope of earning the NFC’s No. 1 seed entering the postseason.

Safety Malik Hooker and defensive tackle Trysten Hill were activated off the Reserve/COVID list; both took part in practice Wednesday. Hooker was placed on the list Dec. 23; Hill had been in protocol since Dec. 18.

Left tackle Tyron Smith participated in individual drills, lending further credence to Stephen Jones’s prediction to a Dallas radio station on Monday that he would make his return in Week 17 after sitting out the past two games with an ankle injury.

Running back JaQuan Hardy and wide receiver Brandon Smith have been taken off the Practice Squad/COVID list and are back on the practice squad.

Wide receiver Noah Brown has been designated for return from a groin injury; he’ll begin his 21-day observation window and can be moved to the active roster within that time.

The Cowboys have added linebacker Devante Bond to the practice squad. That signing comes after losing Francis Bernard to a groin injury against Washington and then the COVID watchlist the next day. Bond is just the team’s fifth healthy linebacker, behind Micah Parsons, Leighton Vander Esch, Keanu Neal, and Luke Gifford.

Bond was a sixth-round draft pick by the Buccaneers in 2016 out of Oklahoma. He logged 36 tackles over three-plus seasons in Tampa in a tenure that included injuries and a suspension, then was released partway into the 2019 campaign. Chicago signed Bond in late 2019; he bounced on and off their practice squad until January 2021.

Bond practiced Wednesday and wore No. 51.

Bears sign kicker Kai Forbath to the practice squad

The Bears announced that they’ve signed K Kai Forbath to the practice squad and placed LB Devante Bond on practice squad injured reserve.

One day after kicker Cairo Santos kicked a game-winning field goal, the Chicago Bears have brought another kicker into the fold. Which likely has more to do with Eddy Pineiro’s status than Santos.

The Bears have signed kicker Kai Forbath to their practice squad, the team announced Friday. Forbath’s addition comes after the Bears placed linebacker Devante Bond on practice squad injured reserve after he suffered a quad injury during Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Forbath has spent time with the Washington Football Team, the New Orleans Saints, the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys. During his eight-year career, Forbath has connected on 131-of-151 field goals for 86.8%.

Bringing in Forbath on the practice squad suggests that the Bears might not be too confident about Pineiro’s status in returning off injured reserve. He suffered a groin injury during training camp, and he was placed on IR ahead of Week 1. Pineiro was eligible to return off IR in Week 4, but head coach Matt Nagy said he wasn’t ready to do so just yet.

While Santos is a hero from Thursday’s game, he has been inconsistent this season. Entering Week 5, Santos had connected on 5-of-7 field goals. Both of his misses had been beyond 45 yards. On Thursday, Santos made both of his field goals, including a season-long 47-yarder and the 38-yard game-winner.

Bears promote LB Devante Bond to active roster vs. Bucs

The Bears promoted LB Devante Bond from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of their Thursday night game against the Buccaneers.

The Chicago Bears promoted linebacker Devante Bond from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of their Thursday night game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This is the second time the Bears have activated Bond from the practice squad this season, with his last action coming in Week 2 against the New York Giants. In that game, Bond saw eight special teams snaps.

As agreed upon in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, before every game NFL teams can promote up to two players from their practice squad without releasing anyone, which would increase their active roster from 53 to 55.

With safety and special teams ace Sherrick McManis doubtful for tonight’s game, Bond’s experience on special teams was likely the reason he was called up.

Bond will face off against his old team in the Bucs, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In four years with Tampa Bay, he played in 29 games, including six starts, where he recorded 26 tackles and one tackle-for-loss.

Bond signed with the Bears last December, where he played in the final three games of the 2019 season.

Bears promote LB Devante Bond to active roster

Bears ILB Josh Woods has been ruled out of Sunday’s game vs. the Giants, so the Bears have promoted LB Devante Bond to the active roster.

The Chicago Bears have promoted inside linebacker Devante Bond from the practice to the active roster, the team announced Saturday.

Bond joined the Bears last December, where he appeared in the final three games of the season before being waived July 26. Bond was signed to the practice squad Friday before getting promoted to the active roster.

Inside linebacker Josh Woods has been ruled out for what the team cited was a personal reason, which is why the Bears promoted Bond to the active roster.

Bond, a former sixth-round pick by the Buccaneers, appeared in 29 games with six starts over three seasons with Tampa Bay, notching 26 tackles and one tackle-for-loss.

As part of this season’s rules in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams are allowed to activate up to two players from their practice squad without having to release anyone, bringing the roster total from 53 to 55 players.

Bears Roster Moves: Linebacker Devante Bond added to practice squad

The Chicago Bears signed linebacker Devante Bond and offensive lineman Dieter Eiselen to the practice squad Friday.

The Chicago Bears made some roster moves Friday, adding two players to their practice squad as they prepare to face the New York Giants (0-1) in Week 2’s home opener at Soldier Field.

Linebacker Devante Bond and OL Dieter Eiselen were added. Both players have a history with the Bears. Eiselen was part of cuts from the team’s 80-man roster; Bond spent some time with the Bears last December and into the offseason.

Practice squad additions rarely make headlines but they do provide some valuable clues about positions the front office and coaching staff have concerns with. Usually, it’s more about depth than anything else.

Bond, 27, was a sixth-round pick of the Buccanneers in 2016. He dealt with season-ending injuries in two of his first three seasons in Tampa Bay and was suspended by the NFL in 2019 for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

The Bears signed Bond in December 2019, one month after he was reinstated by the NFL. He was released by Chicago in July.

Eiselen, 24, was signed by the Bears as an undrafted free agent in May. He was cut on Sept. 5 as part of the team’s final roster cuts. The former Yale product is a longshot developmental prospect.

Bears release LB Devante Bond, S Kentrell Brice and WR Alex Wesley

With the official report date for training camp just days away, the Bears have started trimming their roster down to 80 players.

With the official report date for training camp just days away, the Chicago Bears have begun making cuts to their roster to get it down to 80 players.

The Bears announced the release of linebacker Devante Bond, safety Kentrell Brice and wide receiver Alex Wesley on Sunday night.

Bond was signed by the Bears last December, and he appeared in the final three games of the 2019 season exclusively on special teams. The former sixth-round pick appeared in 29 games with six starts in three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he tallied 26 tackles and one tackle-for-loss.

Brice, a former undrafted free agent out of Louisiana Tech, signed with the Bears on Jan. 8. In three seasons with the Packers, Brice played in 26 games with 14 starts, where he registered 100 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss, six pass breakups, one interception, one sack and one fumble recovery. He signed with the Buccaneers last March, but he was released as part of final cuts.

Wesley, who was an undrafted free agent out of Northern Colorado, joined the New York Giants last year. Wesley was released as part of final cuts, and he joined Chicago’s practice squad last December.

The Bears roster is now down to 85, and they need to release five more players ahead of the Aug. 16 deadline.

Bears 2020 training camp preview: Linebackers

The Chicago Bears linebacker corps figures to be a strength on defense, but are there depth concerns on the roster?

Chicago Bears history is rich with linebacker talent that has generally been the backbone of the defense. Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary and Brian Urlacher are just a few names who have left their mark on this franchise and on the NFL, as well.

And at first glance, the 2020 version of the linebacker corps looks strong on paper. The Bears added Robert Quinn in the offseason, officially ending a disappointing tenure in Leonard Floyd. Quinn, 30, was signed to a five-year, $70 million deal, and he’s coming off an impressive 11.5 sack year with the Cowboys.

Let’s take an in-depth review of the Bears linebacker room heading into training camp.

OLB Khalil Mack

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

After an impressive debut season in Chicago, Khalil Mack was double, and sometimes even triple-teamed, to limit the damage. He tallied his lowest sack total (8.5) since his rookie year, and he felt Akiem Hicks’ absence the most. After recording 4.5 sacks through the first four weeks, he logged just four sacks the rest of the way.

Mack remains one of the premier pass rushers in the NFL, and Hicks’ return should boost his statistics in 2020. He can single-handedly wreak havoc on an opposing offense. Despite a down year, Mack started in all 16 games, tallying four pass deflections and five forced fumbles.

Bears re-sign LB Devante Bond to 1-year deal

LB Devante Bond appeared in three games for the Bears last season on special teams, where he recorded three tackles.

The Bears re-signed inside linebacker Devante Bond to a one-year extension, the team announced Saturday.

Chicago signed the former sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma back on Dec. 9. Bond appeared in three games for the Bears last season on special teams, where he recorded three tackles.

Bond started his career with the Buccaneers, where he appeared in 29 games with six starts in three seasons. He had 26 tackles and one tackle-for-loss.

Last season, Bond played in four games for Tampa Bay, where he had three tackles, before he was released on Oct. 15. Bond led the Buccaneers with 10 special-teams tackles.

The Bears are facing an uncertain future at inside linebacker with pending free agents Nick Kwiatkoski and Danny Trevathan, who could be on their way out of Chicago.

While Bond’s extension provides depth at the position — and locks up a valuable special teams asset — the Bears still have questions looming at inside linebacker heading into free agency.

Bears place LB Roquan Smith on IR, sign LB Devante Bond to active roster

The Bears officially placed LB Roquan Smith on injured reserve and signed LB Devante Bond to the 53-man roster.

The Chicago Bears have made it official: Linebacker Roquan Smith has been placed on injured reserve, which effectively ends his sophomore season.

Smith suffered a torn pectoral muscle in the first quarter of Thursday’s win over the Cowboys. Bears coach Matt Nagy announced Smith’s injury Monday and confirmed he’d miss the remainder of the season.

It’s disappointing because Smith was playing some of his best ball in the last month, where he recorded at least 10 tackles in four of five games, including a career-high 16 stops against Detroit on Thanksgiving.

With Smith sent to IR, the Bears have promoted linebacker Devante Bond to the active roster. Bond, a sixth-round pick by the Buccaneers in 2016, appeared in four games for Tampa Bay this season before the waived him Oct. 16. He later served a four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drugs policy

Bond has appeared in 29 games with six starts in three seasons, playing mostly on special teams and as a reserve.

The Bears also released practice squad linebacker Dewayne Hendrix and signed defensive back Xavier Crawford to the practice squad in his place.
