Former Spartan spotted in Lions touchdown celebration

A former Spartan spotted in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams’ touchdown celebration on Sunday

The Detroit Lions absolutely drubbed the Jacksonville Jaguars inside of Ford Field on Sunday afternoon. A good day for those Lions fans in the Spartans fan base. It was also a good day for a noted Michigan State alumnus.

During a celebratory leap into the stands by Lions wide receivers Amon Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, they were seen jumping into the seats of a former Spartan and Detroit Red Wing, Justin Abdelkader.

Abdelkader is known as a Stanley Cup winner with the Red Wings, while winning a National Championship at MSU.

Watch Red Wings goalie speak about MSU goalie Trey Augustine

Alex Lyon spoke about MSU goaltender Trey Augustine on a recent podcast:

Michigan State has one of the best goalies in college hockey with Trey Augustine patrolling the crease for the green and white. Augustine had an outstanding freshman season with MSU and will now be gearing up for a sophomore year with the team.

Aside from MSU, Augustine was drafted 41st overall in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He has also had an outstanding career with Team USA, winning a World Juniors gold medal and competing at the 2024 IIHF World Championship with NHL caliber players.

At the World Championship, Augustine was able to team up with Red Wings netminder Alex Lyon, who took the Spartan under his wing.

Lyon spoke on a podcast about Augustine and what he brings to the table:

Steven Stamkos’ 3 best free agent landing spots (Nashville!) as he prepares to leave the Lightning

Where will Stamkos land as he becomes an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career?

It sure looks like Tampa Bay Lightning captain and superstar Steven Stamkos is headed to unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career on Monday.

According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the 34-year-old isn’t close to signing a deal to remain with the only team he’s ever known with Stamkos’ agent Don Meehan texting LeBrun “He will be a free agent on July 1″.

Stammer played 79 games last season, scoring at least 40 goals for the seventh time in his career to go along with 41 assists. There are plenty of teams who would love that kind of production, even if the center eats up 10 percent of a roster’s cap space.

The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn projects Stamkos will cost interested suitors an AAV of $8.9 million. So which teams can afford him? Let’s break down Stammer’s most-likely landing spot.

All odds via DraftKings Sportsbook

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (+110)

Ok, listen. Until he’s not a member of the Lightning, I have a hard time imaging Stamkos anywhere else. He’s a future Hall of Famer and helped bring two Stanley Cups back to Tampa Bay. It’s tough to let that walk out the door.

The Bolts enter this offseason with a projected $5.3 million in cap space per CapFriendly, but let’s not put it past GM Julien BriseBois to get creative to keep his captain.

2. Detroit Red Wings (+400)

Whether or not this was part of the Yzerplan all along kind of feels irrelevant. Detroit has plenty of cap space and a fan base desperate to return to the playoffs for the first time in nine years after snapping a streak of 25 consecutive postseason appearances.

Per CapFriendly, the Wings will have a projected $32.7 million available this offseason as it figures out what to do with UFA’s including Patrick Kane, David Perron, James Reimer and Shayne Gostisbehere  — not to mention RFA’s Joseph Veleno and Lucas Raymond.

It’s easy to imagine Stamkos feeding Alex DeBrincat on a top line, it’s just a matter of what Steve Yzerman thinks this team’s ceiling is over the next few years as Stammer gets older.

3. Nashville Predators (+700)

The Predators averaged the 10th-best goals for per game last season (3.24) and the 16th-best power play (21.6 percent). Stamkos would be an instant improvement to both numbers while putting the forward in an extremely-winnable Central Division.

Nashville is expected to have $26.3 million in cap space as Anthony Beauvillier, Jason Zucker, Tyson Barrie and Alexandre Carrier become UFAs. That’s more than enough to get Stamkos to the Music City.

Trey Augustine eyeing return to MSU hockey for sophomore season

MSU goalie Trey Augustine appears to be eyeing a sophomore season in East Lansing

Trey Augustine made himself a household name for Michigan State hockey this past season. The freshman goaltender was one of the best netminders in the nation, despite being the youngest goalie in the nation. In amazing news for Spartan fans, it appears that Augustine is eyeing a return to East Lansing for his sophomore season.

Augustine was a second round pick by the Detroit Red Wings last season and would have an option to go professional if he, or the organization, wanted him to. It looks like he will be donning the green and white again next season, though.

Detroit fans are so pumped about the Lions that they’re chanting ‘Jared Goff’ at Pistons, Red Wings games

The city of Detroit is having a moment.

This is a huge weekend for Detroit sports fans, and they’re rightfully pumped about it.

For the first time since the 1991 NFL season, the Lions won not only a playoff game but also the division and are one win away from a Super Bowl appearance. They’ll face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game Sunday.

It’s an incredible moment for Detroit, and the Lions’ historic season is impacting the city’s other professional sports teams. For the second time this week, “Jared Goff” chants have broken out at Little Caesars Arena, first during the Red Wings’ 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, as The Athletic‘s Max Bultman reported.

And it happened again Saturday during the Pistons’ 118-104 loss to the Wizards.

In the third quarter as Washington power forward Marvin Bagley III was making two free throws, the crowd at the arena was chanting, “Jar-ed Goff! Jar-ed Goff!”

Following the chants during the Red Wings game, Goff said this kind of hype and excitement isn’t like what he previously experienced with the Los Angeles Rams. But a lot of that is probably because the Lions winning in the playoffs is, historically, a rarer occurrence.

“These fans are unbelievable,” Goff said in a video via ESPN’s Eric Woodyard:

Needless to say, the city of Detroit and its sports fans are ready for Sunday’s NFC championship game.

LOOK: Star Michigan football national championship players visit Detroit Red Wings

This is probably the only time you’ll see these guys wearing red! #GoBlue

It’s good being No. 1. You’re celebrated by the people that matter and reviled by those who hate you and want to be you. When you’re home, you get a lot more of the former than the latter.

Such is the case for Michigan football and some of the players who plan to return to the 2024 iteration of the Wolverines after winning the national championship.

To the victors go the spoils, and the victors valiant are taking full advantage. Michigan natives Donovan Edwards and Will Johnson joined up with Colston Loveland and Rod Moore to visit the Detroit Red Wings game on Thursday evening and were highlighted by the team’s social media all decked out in Wings gear.

This might be the only time while in college you see any Michigan players wearing the color red!

The visit was arranged by Valiant Management and the NIL outfit included more, including video:

Edwards and Moore had been expected to depart for the NFL but instead chose to return for their senior seasons. If they had left, they likely wouldn’t have been around to be celebrated as such as they would have likely been in a different city training for the NFL combine. Of course, Johnson and Loveland have another year to play before they could depart, but it’s still good to see them making the most out of their post-championship season.

The Red Wings are hosting the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday evening.

Patrick Kane signing with the Red Wings makes sense, I guess?

It’s not as big of a move as it seems. Here’s why.

Is it weird to just kind of shrug at the Patrick Kane signing to the Detroit Red Wings?

Maybe. While it makes sense for a variety of reasons, it’s got the chance to not make the impact it would have if it was, say, five years ago.

Why it makes sense, especially for the veteran former Hart Trophy winner: Kane played in Michigan before he was an NHL superstar, it’s close to his hometown of Buffalo, and the assumption is he’ll pair up with Alex DeBrincat, with whom he had some chemistry in Chicago when they were both Blackhawks. Plus, the Red Wings are off to a good start!

While it’s a low-risk move to bring in Kane, here’s why it’s meh: The forward wasn’t very good with the New York Rangers last year, including in a playoffs in which he scored just once. He’s 35 and coming off hip surgery, so who knows how effective he’ll be.

But for a young, emerging Red Wings team, it might be a move that gets them a step closer to the postseason. That’s something! It’s just not a huge, game-changing something, and maybe it would have been a bigger something for a more sure contender.

We’ll see.

Former Michigan State hockey forward Taro Hirose making move at Detroit Red Wings training camp

Taro Hirose is making headway at the Detroit Red Wings training camp:

Former Michigan State star forward Taro Hirose is making a case to play in the NHL. Hirose played and starred at MSU from 2016-19, before signing with the Detroit Red Wings.

Hirose has spent his whole professional career playing in the Red Wings organization, playing in 60 NHL games for the Red Wings, while the rest of the time has been spent with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.

Now, it appears Hirose is skating with the Red Wings third line, a promising sign thus far in training camp.

Detroit Red Wings acquire former Michigan State hockey D Jeff Petry

Former MSU defenseman Jeff Petry is heading home to play for the Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have made a huge move, acquiring former Michigan State Spartan defenseman Jeff Petry from the Montreal Canadiens.

Petry spent 2007-2010 patrolling the blue line in East Lansing, being a leading player for Michigan State. Following his time in the green and white, Petry has gone on to have a 14 year career in the National Hockey League with the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadians and Pittsburgh Penguins.

It now appears his 15th season in the league will be spent with his hometown Red Wings.
