NFL Week 16: Let’s make some money parlay

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated on Thursday at 12:08 a.m. ET. All games Saturday and ET unless noted.

Leg 1: LIONS -2.5 (-118) at Panthers – 1 p.m. (FOX)

The Lions have the 31st ranked defense in the NFL, but the defense has played better in recent weeks and the offense has been solid all season.

Jared Goff has set himself up as the QB for Detroit in 2023 with the way he has meshed with WR Amon-Ra St. Brown. With the offensive line blocking great for D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams, the Lions are on the verge of making the playoffs. The team has already gone over its win total of 6.5 for the season.

Carolina is still alive in the NFC South, but has a lot of ground to make up and not a talented roster to do it with. While this game will be close early, the Lions will pull away and win by more than a field goal.

Leg 2: Giants at Vikings OVER 48 (-111) – 1 p.m. (FOX)

This is an important spot for both teams. Saquon Barkley is coming off a good game on Sunday night and the Vikings are coming off an incredible 33-point comeback victory against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. Dalvin Cook, Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen will be able to put up points in this game. The Vikings defense will also give up points to the Giants. While 48 is much higher then the other over I am on in this parlay, I like this game to get to about 55. Both teams need this game for their playoff seeding and it will be important for both. Expect the offenses to come out humming.

Leg 3: Saints at Browns OVER 32.5 (-109) – 1 p.m. (CBS)

The total of this game is the lowest total in an NFL in over a decade. The weather will be around -10 and it will be snowy and windy. This means the run game will be important. Saints RB Alvin Kamara will be up for the challenge and if Nick Chubb comes back to practice and is able to play for the Browns, I can see 5 TD being scored in this game.

I do not think it will be a shootout in the 40’s for each team. But all I am asking for is a 20-14 game. I think this is viable. Even in the tough conditions which will be had in Cleveland.

Parlay payout: Bet $10 to win $66.40 (profit $56.40).

Leg 4-*: Texans at TITANS -3 (-116) – 1 p.m. (CBS)

*-If you want to add a 4th play to this parlay:

Derrick Henry and the Titans love to play against the Texans. This game will be even better for the Titans as the Texans will be without RB Dameon Pierce and WRs Brandin Cooks and Niko Collins. The Texans have not given up, but they might as well have. The Titans will finally be able to get off their 4-game slide when they play at home in this game. Even without Ryan Tannehill, QB Malik Willis and Henry can do enough to win this battle of AFC South teams.

Parlay payout: Bet $10 to win $126.90 (profit $116.90).

The chalk: Detroit Lions

Who they play: at Carolina Panthers – 1 p.m. (FOX)

The Lions come into Charlotte after beating the New York Jets 20-17 on Sunday to go over their season wins total of 6.5. After starting 1-6 they have won 6 of 7 and it was certainly not something many saw coming.

With Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift, Detroit has a solid running game for the 1st time in many years. This has helped take pressure off Jared GoffAmon-Ra St. Brown has taken his place amongst the best young WR in the NFL and Jamison Williams, who is finally healthy, has added a 2nd receiver to the mix for Goff to find.

While the defense of Detroit started the season as one of the worst in the NFL, it has improved to the point of mediocrity as the season has progressed. While this may not seem like a lot, it is good enough as the Lions continue to score points against their opponents. This should be another game in which the Lions offense can overcome a Panthers team which at 5-9, is fighting for a division title but is still far less talented than the Lions.

D.J. Moore has not yet found a connection with Sam Darnold to make me believe the Panthers have enough firepower to win a high-scoring game. With Detroit likely to get to 30 in this Christmas Eve game, they will do more than enough on offense to win against a lackluster Panthers team. The Detroit Lions are my favorite Survivor Pool play in Week 16.

Off the board: Tennessee Titans

Who they play: Home vs. Houston Texans – 1 p.m. (CBS)

Derrick Henry finally got over 100 yards against the Chargers on Sunday. He also managed to have more then 60 receiving yards as he did everything possible to get the Titans their 1st win in 4 games. Despite his play, an injury to Ryan Tannehill was too much to overcome for Tennessee. This week will be entirely different.

Not only does Henry routinely feast on the Texans defense, but the Texans will also be without starting WRs Niko Collins and Brandin Cooks. The team will also be without CB Derek Stingley and RB Dameon Pierce, the leading rusher for the Texans just placed on injured reserve.

Whether it be Kyle Allen, Davis Mills or a combination of both at QB in this game for Houston, it will not be able to move the ball much. Tennessee will keep the Texans off the field with Henry likely to get 30-plus carries. The Titans will shorten this game and attempt to get out with an easy win after so many tough recent losses. The Titans will get back on track here as they look to win the AFC South division over the streaking Jaguars.

Lions loss to Panthers ends impressive shutout streak from Detroit

It’s the first time Matthew Stafford has been shut out

https://embed.sendtonews.com/oembed/?SC=B4igSPifcs-1046372-7498&format=json&offsetx=0&offsety=0&floatwidth=400&floatposition=bottom-right&float=on

If it felt like Sunday’s 20-0 whitewashing at the hands of the Carolina Panthers was the worst offensive performance from the Detroit Lions in a very long time, that feeling was right. The blanking marked the first time in over a decade the Lions got shut out in the regular season.

The last time the Lions failed to score a single point in a game came in 2009, Matthew Stafford’s rookie season. Stafford did not play in the Week 6 loss, a 26-0 spanking in Green Bay. Daunte Culpepper started the game at QB but was yanked for Drew Stanton. It’s the first time Stafford has been on the wrong end of a shutout.

Detroit did score a potential touchdown on Sunday, but Marvin Jones’ reception was wiped out because he lined up illegally on the gadget play.

The 11-plus seasons without being shut out was the seventh-longest streak in the NFL. The New Orleans Saints have the longest streak, dating back to the 2002 season.

Lions pivotal play of the game: Marvin Jones takes away his own touchdown

The Detroit Lions got shutout against the Carolina Panthers and with an inexcusable penalty, Marvin Jones took away his own touchdown.

The Detroit Lions put on one of the most shameful football games you will ever witness, getting shutout for the first time since 2009 — dropping 20-0 to the Carolina Panthers — putting that last nail in the coffin of any hope for the future.

The Lions repeatedly kept shooting themselves in the foot, making the same mistakes game in and game out. The missed tackles, dropped passes, inexcusable penalties, and blown coverages dug the Lions in a deep grave.

The offense was mute from start to finish. Just 185 total offensive yards, (fewest since 2010), converted only 3 of 14 third downs, sacked five times, and embarrassed in time of procession 36:48 to 23:12.

With the offense pulling a vanishing act, the defense was asked to shoulder the onslaught, and unfortunately, they weren’t much better. Surely they were gassed defending 70 plays, but they were playing against a quarterback making his first start and a makeshift offensive line. That is unacceptable.

The Lions were manhandled from start to finish. They were unable to get anything going and could not stop anyone. Then they got desperate. They even tried some razzle-dazzle to generate, well, anything, but they were left with nothing but sorrow.

Let’s set up the play.

Stafford hands the ball off to Kerryon Johnson, who laterals it back to Stafford to try for the deep shot. The blocking was beautiful, allowing the right amount of time to find Marvin Jones in the endzone. 51-yards downfield, Jones snatched the ball from the defender in the endzone and finally put points on the board — or so they thought.

The play was called back because Jones lined up illegally over the tight end negating what would’ve been a 51-yard touchdown, and basically sucking the life from the Lions for the rest of the game.

This game was very difficult to watch.

The performances were lackluster at best and brought into question the direction of this organization. Something needs to change, especially after this poor excuse for production and getting shutout by a team with issues of their own.

The Lions are given no favors with a short week — due to their Thanksgiving matchup against the Houston Texans —  but it is hard to imagine they will be able to overcome any of the issues plaguing this team in such a short turn around.

Experts narrowly edge out Lions in Week 11 matchup with the Panthers

The experts are slightly picking ahead of the Detroit Lions in their Week 11 road matchup against the Carolina Panthers

With the 4-5 Detroit Lions looking to even their record at .500, their next stop takes them to Charlotte to face off against the 3-7 Panthers in this battle of the big city cats.

The last time these two teams met was two years ago and the Lions came away with a 20-19 victory after the Panthers failed on what would’ve been a game-winning two-point conversion.

Both squads face tough hurdles this week, with several injuries in crucial positions, making this look more like a hospital trip than an NFL game.

The Lions will be without Kenny Golladay, Danny Amendola, D’Andre Swift, Da’Shawn Hand, and Austin Bryant. And even though Matthew Stafford tore a ligament in his thumb, he is expected to play. With the massive injuries mainly to the wide receivers and defensive line, the Lions brought up Frank Herron and Mohamad Sanu for depth.

The Panthers will be without several offensive weapons, including Christian McCaffrey, starting left tackle Russell Okung, and starting right guard John Miller. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will be a game-time decision, and the Panthers would turn to either P.J. Walker or Will Grier to fill in if he can’t go.

According to NFL Pickwatch, 57-percent of experts are giving the Panthers a slight edge at the time of this writing. Honestly, this is a tough game to pick, considering they have no idea who will be on the field to make a fair judgment.

In the end, it will more than likely end up coming down to who overcame their injuries to a greater degree. If the Lions can get creative and hit some of the key concepts in the Honolulu Blueprint, they should be able to bring their record back to .500.

Lions vs. Panthers: 5 key matchups to watch

5 key matchups in the Week 11 game between the Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers

The 4-5 Detroit Lions head to Charlotte to face the 3-7 Carolina Panthers in a quest to string together wins in consecutive weeks.

The Panthers have dropped five games in a row since opening the season at 3-2. Injuries have hit Carolina hard, and the ripple effects of those injuries will impact this matchup.

The Lions won’t feel sorry for the Panthers, as Detroit is dealing with some prominent injury concerns of its own. It makes for some unconventional and unexpected key matchups in the game. Here are five of the battles that will help decide the outcome.

D’Andre Swift almost certain to miss Week 11 with a concussion

Swift doesn’t have enough time to clear the concussion protocols to play Sunday

While the Detroit Lions have yet to officially rule out running back D’Andre Swift prior to Friday’s practice session, it seems a certainty the rookie running back will not play against the Carolina Panthers in Week 11.

Swift is in the concussion protocol, and the details of the protocol make it nearly impossible for Swift to clear the requirements in time to play in Charlotte. Head coach Matt Patricia stated in his Friday Zoom press conference that it will be “difficult” for Swift to make the trip.

The concussion protocol states that a player must go through one full practice without contact, followed by one full practice with contact, and remain asymptomatic of any further brain injury signs. Friday is the Lions’ last practice session of the week. Swift did not practice on Thursday.

Assuming Swift will not play, Adrian Peterson figures to return to being the lead running back. Kerryon Johnson’s role should also expand.

Report: Teddy Bridgewater ‘unlikely’ to play vs. Lions in Week 11

If Bridgewater can’t play, it will be either Will Grier or P.J. Walker

The Detroit Lions aren’t the only team entering Week 11 with injury uncertainty at quarterback. The team the Lions are facing, the Carolina Panthers, have some issues of their own.

While Stafford is rehabbing a thumb injury and appears poised to play through the pain, the Panthers might not be so fortunate. Starting QB Teddy Bridgewater is not progressing as well as hoped with his sprained MCL in his knee. Bridgewater has been limited in practice sessions and now reports indicate the veteran is unlikely to play in Sunday’s matchup in Charlotte.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network was one of several to report Bridgewater’s status on Thursday afternoon, following the Panthers’ practice session.

If Bridgewater can’t go, the Panthers will choose between second-year Will Grier and former XFL standout P.J. Walker to play at quarterback.

Questionable QB health means no betting line on Lions-Panthers game

Matthew Stafford and Teddy Bridgewater are both battling injuries

Normally we bring you the betting line and over/under total for the upcoming Lions game, but this week we can’t do that. It’s not anything under our control, however.

There is no betting line on the Lions matchup with the Carolina Panthers in Week 11 at BetMGM or other sports betting outlets this week. That’s because the starting quarterbacks for both teams are battling injuries that may or may not allow them to play on Sunday.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has an injured thumb. He suffered the injury in Sunday’s win over the Washington Football Team and showed no real ill effects after getting the wounded thumb taped up, but his status and effectiveness level for Week 11 is uncertain.

The same is true for Carolina and QB Teddy Bridgewater. He is dealing with a sprained MCL in his knee. Like Stafford, he played through the pain in Week 10.

Both teams practice on Wednesday and will release the first official injury reports of the week following those practices. We’ll have a better idea about the availability of Stafford and Bridgewater as the week progresses.
